What do Ford owners in El Segundo usually need?

El Segundo is really two different places for a driver. The west side is a compact grid of 1920s to 1950s bungalows, Spanish-style homes and low-rise apartments, with the beach just beyond it. The east side is mostly aerospace, media and office campuses with very little housing. Ford key trouble shows up differently in each, and that shapes how we plan the visit.

On the residential side, the calls are usually about a key that has finally worn out, a spare nobody can find, or a lockout with the key sitting on the seat. The same household can have a locked apartment door and a locked Ford in the same week, and we handle both. If you only need into the car, our car lockout service in El Segundo is a separate and usually simpler job than making a new key.

Around Downtown El Segundo and Main Street, and over at Plaza El Segundo and The Point, people park, walk off to a meal or an errand, and come back to a smart fob that reports 'No key detected' or a flip key whose hinge has snapped. Near the office campuses, the problem tends to be a key lost during a workday, with the car still sitting in the lot and an owner who needs to get home.

Across all of these, the Ford problems we see most often are the same ones we see everywhere:

  • Worn ignition lock wafers, so the key sticks or stops turning on a high-mileage truck or SUV
  • Worn 8-cut key blades that no longer lift the wafers properly
  • The PATS theft light flashing: the engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but will not start the engine
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons
  • Dead smart-fob batteries
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that work, then fail intermittently

How does mobile Ford key service work at the curb?

You do not need to tow the car anywhere. The van comes to wherever the Ford is parked, whether that is a driveway on the west side, a curb near Main Street, a lot at one of the campuses or a spot at The Point. Everything we need to cut and program a key rides in the van.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. A person answers, and it is the same company that sends the van, not a dispatch middleman.
  2. Tell us the year, model, trim, whether the car has a push-button start, and how many working keys you still have. A photo of the key you have helps.
  3. We confirm the details by VIN where the year or model is a gray area, and we tell you plainly if your car falls into a dealer-only case.
  4. At the car, we verify that you are the owner or authorized driver before we make a key. Bring your registration and ID.
  5. We cut the blade, by code or from the lock, as the car requires, and we check the ignition cylinder to see whether wear will be a problem for the new key.
  6. We program the key through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. On many Fords that includes the timed security wait built into PATS, so the process is not instant even when everything goes right.
  7. You test it with us: start the engine, lock and unlock, work the remote and the trunk, and confirm any spare key you ordered does the same.

Which Ford key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Ford keys are not all the same, and the era of your vehicle decides what we need to bring. Here is the short version, based on Ford's own immobilizer history. Exact changeover years vary by model, so we check your specific year before promising a method.

Ford's SecuriLock/PATS immobilizer spread across the lineup from 1996 to 1999, using a fixed-code Texas 4C chip. Most models moved to the Texas 4D63 crypto chip in the mid-2000s, the 40-bit era. An 80-bit version of that chip phased in around 2011 to 2013 depending on the model, and the Expedition is often listed as holding out until its 2015 refresh.

Bladed keys on newer platforms use a 128-bit NXP Hitag Pro chip from roughly 2013 to 2015 onward. We have that confirmed on the 2015 to 2020 F-150 and the 2019 and newer Ranger. Smart proximity fobs with push-button start spread trim by trim through the 2010s and are standard on most 2018 and later redesigns.

A few outliers are worth knowing about:

  • The US Focus used a Texas 4D60 chip in 2000 to 2004, which is different from most Fords of that time.
  • The 2013 to 2019 Escape kept 80-bit bladed keys and never made the 128-bit move.
  • Ranger PATS lagged the rest of the lineup. Most Rangers before 1999 have no transponder at all, and 2.5L four-cylinders have none through 2001. After that they use 4C and 4D63-family keys like other Fords.

What if you have lost every Ford key?

All keys lost is stressful, but on most Fords it is a routine job, not a disaster. On bladed-key models, all-keys-lost programming through the OBD-II port is routine for us. We cut a key to the lock, connect the programmer, work through the PATS security-access wait, and teach the car the new key.

Things get more involved on proximity-fob models from roughly 2016 onward. All-keys-lost on those can require an 'active alarm' bypass adapter alongside the programmer. Vendor kits list coverage for about 2016 to 2020, so we confirm your vehicle against that before we start.

On the newest Fords, roughly 2021 and later, the picture changes. Ford's FDRS and FJDS software path requires NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, for PATS functions through non-dealer logins. That is NASTF's own service guidance. Aftermarket tool coverage on these cars varies. If your Ford is one where the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only, we say so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the work.

If this is your situation, the page on lost car key replacement in El Segundo walks through what to have ready. If you have one working key left, say so when you call, because copying from a working key is generally the lighter-cost route compared with starting from nothing.

What affects the cost of a Ford key in El Segundo?

We will not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what actually moves the cost up or down:

  • Key type: a basic transponder key, a flip key with remote buttons and a smart proximity fob are three different levels of hardware and programming.
  • Model year: older fixed-code and 40-bit cars are usually simpler than 128-bit cars or the newest models with restricted access.
  • Spare or all keys lost: adding a key when you have a working one is generally the lighter-cost job. Starting from zero requires more steps and sometimes extra equipment.
  • Whether owner onboard programming is possible: many bladed-key Fords support adding a key yourself when two working programmed keys are available, but we verify per generation because trim and model-year exceptions exist.
  • Ignition condition: if worn wafers keep the new key from turning, the ignition cylinder may need attention too.
  • Time and place: a middle-of-the-night call costs the company more to cover than a daytime appointment.
  • Dealer-only or credentialed cases: when a job needs OEM-assisted access, extra steps come into the cost.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense for your Ford?

Both are legitimate choices, and the dealer is sometimes the right one. If your Ford is a very new model where PATS functions need credentials we cannot honestly rely on, the dealer or an OEM-assisted request may be the only route. We will tell you that directly.

For most Fords from the late 1990s through the 2010s, mobile service is usually the more economical route and the more convenient one. The dealer typically needs the car brought in, which is a problem if you have no working key to drive or tow it with. A mobile locksmith comes to the car, programs on site and can often do it the same day.

Whoever you hire, ask for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and any legitimate company should give you the number without hesitation. If you are comparing us with others, ask each of them the same questions.

Ford key service around El Segundo and ZIP 90245

Our vans cover all of El Segundo, ZIP 90245. That includes the westside residential grid, where original wood doors and older hardware are common, Downtown El Segundo along Main Street, the Smoky Hollow area with its converted creative offices, the Plaza El Segundo and The Point retail district, the Continental Park office district and Campus El Segundo.

Because this city sits directly on the coast, the persistent marine layer and salt air corrode exterior locks, hinges and gate hardware on the west-side homes closest to the beach. We do not claim that salt air ruins your car key. But if you are calling about a Ford key and a corroded gate lock or front door lock at the same address, we can look at both on one visit.

The east side is a different story. With aerospace, media and office campuses, including the area around the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Mattel headquarters, a lot of drivers park for the workday and are far from home when a key goes missing. If that is you, call from the lot and we will come to the car. If your business or campus needs lock and access-hardware work as well, our team can talk it through when you call.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Ford key?

We have been in business since 1987, and we run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood alongside our mobile vans. When you call, you reach one company, not a lead-selling call center that hands your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year.

We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so El Segundo is part of a service area we know well, but your Ford gets treated as its own case. We check the year, the chip generation and the programming path before we start, and we tell you when something is outside what we can honestly do.

If you want to read more about the Ford side of things, our Ford car key page goes through the models, and our car keys overview covers other makes. You can also reach us through the contact page or just call (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Ford key if I have lost all my keys?

In most cases, yes. All-keys-lost by OBD is routine on bladed-key Fords. Proximity-fob models from about 2016 on may need an active alarm bypass adapter, and the newest models, roughly 2021 and later, may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We confirm by VIN before we send the van.

Why does my Ford crank but not start after a new key was cut?

This usually means the key was cut without a transponder chip, or the chip was never programmed to the car. Ford's PATS needs to read a programmed chip before the engine will run. The flashing theft light is a common sign. A hardware-store copy opens the doors but cannot start the engine.

Can I program a spare Ford key myself?

Many bladed-key Fords support owner onboard programming of an additional key when two working programmed keys are available. Trim and model-year exceptions exist, so we verify per generation. If you only have one key, or none, you will need professional programming equipment.

How long does programming a Ford key take?

We will not give a number we cannot stand behind. Many Fords involve a timed security-access wait of about ten minutes through PATS, plus cutting the blade and testing everything. Smart fobs and newer models can take longer, and all-keys-lost jobs involve more steps than adding a spare.

Do you come to my work or my apartment in El Segundo?

Yes. We come to the car, whether it is at a west-side home or apartment, on Main Street, at The Point, in an office lot or on a campus. Call (213) 577-1366, give us the location and the vehicle details, and we will plan the visit.

My smart fob says 'No key detected.' Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause on proximity fobs, and replacing it may be all you need. If the fob is cracked, water-damaged or still will not work with a fresh battery, it may need replacing or reprogramming.

Will the dealer be cheaper than you?

It depends on the car. For many late-1990s to 2010s Fords, mobile service is usually the more economical route because there is no tow or trip to the dealer. For some of the newest models, the dealer may be the only way to complete PATS functions, and we will say so.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before they start work, and check it with the state. Also ask whether the person on the phone is the company that will arrive, or a dispatcher passing the job along.
