What do Ford owners in Duarte usually need?

Most Ford calls from Duarte fall into a few groups: a lost key, a spare that was never made, a worn key that has started to stick in the ignition, a fob that quit working, or a truck that cranks but will not start because the engine does not recognize the chip in the key. The make is common enough that we see every era of Ford key, from the fixed-code chips of the late 1990s to push-button smart fobs.

Where the problem happens in Duarte matters, because it decides how we get to you. The Duarte/City of Hope A Line park-and-ride is a good example. People leave a car there for the day, ride the train, and come back to find the key is gone, or it is in the car and the doors are locked. Around the City of Hope medical campus, visitors and patients' families park in unfamiliar lots and garages, and a key lost during a long hospital day is a real possibility. Along the Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street corridors, people park at shops and apartment complexes, and a lot of Fords sit on the street overnight in the postwar neighborhoods where driveways are narrow or full.

In every one of those cases the car is usually where you left it, and it does not need to be towed to be fixed. That is the reason we work from mobile vans. If your Ford is locked, our Duarte car lockout service is a separate job from key replacement, and we will often handle both in one visit when you also need a spare made.

  • Lost or stolen Ford key, with or without a spare
  • Spare key or second fob you have been meaning to get
  • Key that sticks, turns hard or no longer starts the engine
  • Remote-head key with a cracked shell, broken flip hinge or worn buttons
  • Smart fob that shows 'No key detected' or has stopped responding

How does mobile Ford key service work at the curb?

When you call (213) 577-1366, a person answers at any hour, any day of the year. We ask for the model, the year, how many working keys you have and where the car is parked. That gives us enough to know which key and which programming method to plan for, and we say so if something needs to be confirmed on site.

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Duarte is about 33 miles from that base, so we give you an honest arrival estimate when you call rather than a promise we cannot be sure of. The work itself happens at your car, in a driveway, on a street or in a parking lot.

  1. You call and describe the Ford, the situation and the location. We tell you what information we need to see on site, such as ID and proof of ownership.
  2. We arrive in a mobile van carrying key blanks, transponder chips, fobs and programming equipment.
  3. We confirm the exact year, model and key type, and check whether your car still has a working key. The VIN settles any question about which chip a particular vehicle uses.
  4. We cut the key blade if it has one, using the lock code or by decoding the lock, so the key matches your car.
  5. We program the new key to the vehicle, usually through the OBD-II port, and test it: doors, remote functions where fitted, and starting the engine several times.
  6. We explain what we did, and if you only had one key, we talk about making a spare while the equipment is already out.

What kind of Ford key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Ford keys change a lot from one generation to the next, and the change is not always tied neatly to a single model year. What follows is the general picture. Exact changeover years vary by model, and we check your specific vehicle before quoting or cutting anything.

Ford's SecuriLock system, also called PATS, started rolling across the lineup from about 1996 to 1999. Those keys use a fixed-code Texas 4C chip. Most models moved to the Texas 4D63 crypto chip during the mid-2000s, which is the 40-bit era. An 80-bit version of that chip phased in around 2011 to 2013 depending on the model, and the Expedition is often listed as holding out until its 2015 refresh. Bladed keys on newer platforms use a 128-bit NXP Hitag Pro chip from roughly 2013 to 2015 on. That is confirmed on the 2015 to 2020 F-150 and the 2019 and newer Ranger. Push-button-start proximity fobs spread trim by trim through the 2010s and are standard on most 2018 and later redesigns.

  • Late 1990s to early 2000s: fixed-code 4C chip keys, with the US Focus as an outlier using a 4D60 chip from 2000 to 2004.
  • Mid-2000s onward: 4D63 crypto chip, moving from 40-bit to 80-bit in the early 2010s.
  • About 2013 to 2015 onward: 128-bit Hitag Pro chip on newer bladed-key platforms. The 2013 to 2019 Escape is an exception that kept 80-bit bladed keys.
  • 2010s and later: smart proximity fobs with push-button start, spreading by trim level.
  • Ranger trucks lagged: no transponder on most trucks before 1999, and none on the 2.5L four-cylinder through 2001, then 4C and 4D63-family keys like other Fords.

What happens if you have lost every Ford key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On most 2000s and 2010s Fords, we can create a new key through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. PATS typically builds in a timed security-access wait during that process, so the job has a stretch where we are waiting on the car rather than working on it. All keys lost by OBD is routine on bladed-key models.

Newer proximity-fob models are less simple. On roughly 2016 and later vehicles with push-button start, an all-keys-lost job can require an 'active alarm' bypass adapter alongside the programmer. Vendor kits list coverage for 2016 to 2020 models, and we confirm that your specific vehicle is covered before promising anything.

The newest Fords, roughly 2021 and later, are where we have to be most direct. Ford's FDRS and FJDS software path requires NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, for PATS functions through non-dealer logins, according to NASTF's own service guidance. Aftermarket tool coverage varies on these vehicles. If your Ford is new enough that the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only, we will tell you plainly on the phone or as soon as we read the VIN, so you do not wait on a van that cannot finish the job. You can read more about this scenario on our lost car key replacement page for Duarte.

If you still have one working key, tell us. Many bladed-key Fords also support owner onboard programming of an additional key when two working programmed keys are available, and we verify that per generation because trim and model-year exceptions exist. With one key only, we can usually program through the OBD port instead.

What affects the cost of a Ford key in Duarte?

We do not quote a number on a web page because the honest answer depends on your vehicle. Here is what moves the cost, so you can see why two Ford owners can get different quotes for the same afternoon.

The biggest factor is the type of key. A basic transponder blade is a different job than a flip key with remote buttons, and both are different from a push-button smart fob. Chip generation also matters, since a 4C key, an 80-bit key and a 128-bit key all use different parts and programming steps.

Whether you have a working key is the second factor. Adding a copy when one key still works is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing. All keys lost takes more equipment and more time, and on the 2016 and later proximity-fob models it may need the bypass adapter described above.

Other factors are cutting the blade, which is more involved on an 8-cut key, whether the ignition lock itself is worn and needs attention, the time of day, and how far we travel. A call at 3 a.m. is not the same as a weekday visit, and we are upfront about that when you call.

  • Key type: transponder blade, remote-head flip key or smart fob
  • Chip generation and the programming method it needs
  • Working key on hand, or all keys lost
  • Blade cutting and the condition of the ignition lock
  • Time of day and travel to your location
  • Whether the vehicle is new enough to need dealer or VSP-level access

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense for your Ford?

Both are legitimate choices, and the right one depends on the car and the situation. A dealer can order keys by VIN, has direct access to Ford's systems and is the right call on some of the newest models, especially where the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only. If your Ford is running and you can take it there with time to spare, it is a reasonable option.

A mobile locksmith makes more sense when the car cannot be driven because there is no key to drive it with. A dealer visit then means a tow, plus time without the vehicle. We come to you, make the key and program it on the spot for most 2000s and 2010s models. For those cars it is usually the quicker route and often the more economical one, but we say so honestly when your Ford falls outside that range.

Whoever you hire, ask about their license. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any locksmith should be willing to give you that number. That applies to us and to anyone else you call.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Ford key?

We have been in business since 1987, and a lot of that time has been spent with Ford keys, old and new. We are one company with a storefront in Westwood and our own mobile vans. When you call, you are not reaching a dispatch center that sends the job to whoever is closest. The people who answer work for us.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters most on the jobs that are not routine: the older Ranger that never had a transponder, the Escape that stayed on 80-bit keys, the 2020s model where programming access is limited. We would rather tell you the real situation than start a job we cannot finish.

We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Duarte is one of them. You can find our general Duarte page at Wilshire Lock & Key in Duarte, or look at our Ford key information for background on the make.

Where Ford key problems actually happen around Duarte

Duarte's ZIP code is 91010, and the city's layout shapes the calls. Along the Huntington Drive flats, most homes are postwar single-family houses from the 1940s through the 1960s, and townhome and apartment complexes sit near Huntington Drive and the City of Hope campus. In older neighborhoods and complexes, cars are often parked on the street or in shared lots, which makes a lost key or a locked car a curbside job. We handle those in Royal Oaks, along Buena Vista Street and around the Huntington Drive corridor.

Up on Duarte Mesa and in the Fish, Mel and Spinks Canyon areas, lots are larger and homes are often custom. Cars there tend to sit in driveways or behind gates, so we come up the hill to you. If gate access is part of the problem, tell us when you call so we know what to expect.

The City of Hope campus area is a different pattern. Visitors, patients' families and staff park there, and a lost key can leave someone far from home in a car they cannot start. The A Line park-and-ride works the same way: you leave the car for the day and need a key when you return.

Duarte has hot, dry summers, and Santa Ana winds come out of the canyons now and then. The main practical effects are heat on sun-exposed doors and wind-blown grit in exterior locks. The same grit can get into the door locks of a car that lives outdoors, and heat can wear down plastic on older remote shells. If a Ford key sticks, it can be the key, the ignition or both, and we check before replacing anything.

What are the common Ford key problems we fix?

Some failures show up again and again on Fords, and knowing which one you have helps us bring the right parts.

  • Worn ignition lock wafers, where keys stick or stop turning on high-mileage vehicles
  • Worn 8-cut key blades that no longer lift the wafers properly
  • PATS theft light flashing: the engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but will not start the engine
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons
  • Dead smart-fob batteries that bring up 'No key detected'
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently

How do you get started?

Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Have the year and model ready, and the VIN if you can see it through the windshield at the driver's side dashboard. If you prefer to write first, use our contact page. For fob-specific work, see our Duarte key fob replacement page, and for the full range of service, visit Duarte car key replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a new Ford key in Duarte if I lost all my keys?

On most 2000s and 2010s Fords, yes. All keys lost by OBD-II programming is routine on bladed-key models. Some 2016 and later proximity-fob models may need an active alarm bypass adapter, and the newest models, roughly 2021 and later, may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We confirm by VIN and tell you before we start.

Do you come to me, or do I have to bring the Ford in?

We come to you. Our mobile vans work at homes, apartment lots, street parking and park-and-ride lots in Duarte. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, but you do not need to visit it for most key jobs.

Why won't my Ford start with a copy I made at a hardware store?

Most Fords since the late 1990s use a transponder chip that the engine must recognize. A copy cut without a programmed chip may open the doors but will not start the engine, and the PATS theft light often flashes. The key needs a chip and needs to be programmed to the car.

Can I program a spare Ford key myself?

On many bladed-key Fords, owner onboard programming of an additional key is possible when two working programmed keys are available. We verify per generation because trim and model-year exceptions exist. If you only have one key or the method does not apply, we can program through the OBD-II port.

How much does a Ford key cost?

It depends on the key type, the chip generation, whether you have a working key and the time of day. A basic transponder key and a smart fob are very different jobs. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year and model, and we will explain what applies to your vehicle.

My Ford says 'No key detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead smart-fob battery is a common cause of that message. If a battery change does not fix it, the fob itself may have failed or lost its programming. We check the battery and fob before recommending a replacement.

Is a dealer my only option for a newer Ford?

Not for most models. Many 2000s and 2010s Fords can be handled by a mobile locksmith. On the newest models, roughly 2021 and later, Ford's FDRS and FJDS access needs NASTF VSP credentials or an OEM-assisted request for PATS functions, so some jobs may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We tell you when that is the case.

Should I ask a locksmith for a license?

Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and a reputable locksmith will give you the number. Ask any company you call, including us.
