What do BMW owners in Commerce usually need?

Commerce is a small city of roughly 12,000 residents, but a lot of people move through it. Residents live in compact pockets of modest 1940s and 1950s single-family homes around Rosewood Park, Bandini and Bristow Park, with newer townhomes at Rosewood Village. Around those pockets sit warehouses and distribution buildings along Washington Boulevard, Telegraph Road and the I-5 corridor. Add the people who come to shop at Citadel Outlets or park around the Commerce Casino area, and you get a few very different kinds of BMW key calls.

A resident usually needs a spare made before the only working key gives out, or a replacement once a fob stops responding. Someone who works in one of the industrial districts may lock a key inside the car during a shift, or lose it somewhere between the building and the vehicle. A visitor is in a different spot: the key is gone or sitting in a bag, the car is somewhere unfamiliar, and home is a long way off. In each case the car is where it is, and it is usually easier for us to come to it than for you to move it.

The requests we hear most often on BMWs are:

  • A spare key, because there is only one working key and it is getting worn
  • A replacement for a smart fob that shows 'key not detected' or no longer holds a charge
  • A lockout where the key is inside the car or the fob has died
  • A lost key, with or without a spare at home
  • A cracked key shell, broken hinge or worn buttons on an older key
  • A second opinion on a car that will not start and may not be a key problem at all

How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?

You call (213) 577-1366 and a person answers, any hour of any day. We ask for the model, the model year and what has happened, because with BMW the year matters more than almost anything else. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Commerce is about 19 miles from there, so we send a mobile van to you. Here is what happens next.

  1. We narrow down the key era over the phone from your model and year, then confirm it at the car, because some years straddle two systems.
  2. We ask you for proof that the car is yours, such as registration and your ID. We do this on every vehicle, and BMW dealer paths require it too.
  3. If you are locked out, we open the car first without damaging the door, the paint or the weather seals.
  4. We check the existing key, the battery and the dash slot or door sensors, since many 'bad key' complaints turn out to be something else.
  5. We tell you what your car allows: add a key, replace a key, or whether the job belongs to the dealer. You hear this before any work starts.
  6. If the job is ours, we cut or prepare the key, program it to the car, and test every function with you watching: unlock, lock, start, and the emergency blade.

Which BMW key generation is yours?

BMW keys fall into clear eras, and what we can do depends almost entirely on which era your car belongs to. In plain terms:

EWS era, through the mid-2000s and up to 2010 on the E83 X3. These cars use the EWS immobilizer and a remote-head 'diamond' key with an ID44 chip. This is routine specialist work for us.

CAS era, from the 2002 E65 7-series and spreading through the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5 and 2013 to 2015 E84 X1. The key is an ID46 fob that slides into a slot in the dash, and you press a Start button. The CAS module comes in several generations, CAS1 through CAS3+, and that detail changes how we approach the car.

F-chassis era, which brings true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 chip. That covers the F01 7-series from 2009, F10 5-series and F25 X3 from 2011, F30 3-series from 2012, F15 X5 from 2014 and F48 X1 from 2016. Some run CAS4 or CAS4+ modules (F01, F10, F25) and others use FEM or BDC body modules (F30, F15, F48).

G-chassis era, from the 2016 G11 7-series onward. These use the BDC2 body controller and a 434 MHz fob from the N5F-ID21A family.

Newest generations: the G70 7-series from 2023, U11 X1 from 2023, G60 5-series from 2024 and G45 X3 from 2025 add Digital Key systems. There is no established aftermarket path for them yet.

What can we program, era by era?

Here is the honest picture, from easiest to hardest. EWS cars are routine for a specialist: the key is originated from the EWS module data on the bench, and that includes all-keys-lost situations. CAS1 through CAS3+ cars have documented add-a-key and all-keys-lost procedures through the OBD port, although late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade first.

CAS4, CAS4+ and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars are advanced specialist jobs. Some can be done through the OBD port with the right tool, and others require bench work on the module. It is possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment, and we will tell you up front if your car falls on the harder side.

G-chassis BDC2 cars are where the limits start. Adding a key is possible for a specialist when you still have a working key. The newest G70, U11, G60 and G45 cars are dealer-only for key work, and we will say so rather than invent an option.

What if you have lost every BMW key?

All keys lost is the call people dread, so here is exactly where we stand. On EWS cars and on CAS1 through CAS3+ cars, all-keys-lost is something we can handle. On the CAS4 and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars it is an advanced job that depends on the specific car and tool, and we confirm by VIN and in person before promising anything.

On G-chassis cars from 2016 on, all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only. There is one aftermarket route advertised for it, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We do not use it, and we will not promise G-series all-keys-lost. We would rather send you to the dealer with the right information than leave you with a car that the dealer can no longer help.

If you are in this situation, a lockout service or an assessment from us is still useful. We can get you into the car if needed, confirm the era and VIN, and explain what the dealer will ask for. You can read more about the general process on our lost car key replacement page for Commerce.

What affects the cost of a BMW key in Commerce?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the same model name can mean very different work depending on the year. These are the real factors:

  • The key era. An EWS diamond key and a G-series smart fob are different parts with different programming effort.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car that still has one is usually the more economical route compared with starting from zero.
  • All keys lost. When every key is gone, the work is larger and on some cars it moves to bench-level module work.
  • The module generation, CAS1 through CAS4+ or FEM/BDC, which decides which equipment we need.
  • Late CAS3+ firmware, which can add a flash downgrade step.
  • The key itself: original-quality fob, shell replacement only, or a battery or repair that avoids a new key altogether.
  • When and where: a late-night call to a parking lot is a different effort than a daytime appointment.
  • Whether a lockout is also part of the visit.

Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: which makes sense?

For most BMWs in the EWS and CAS eras, and many F-chassis cars, a specialist locksmith can do the job at your curb without the car being towed. We come to you, and for many cars that is the lighter-cost option. If your BMW is an older one with a working key, a spare from us is usually straightforward.

The dealer is the right call in a few cases, and we will say so. The newest generations, G70, U11, G60 and G45, are dealer-only for key work. G-chassis all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only too. If your car is in one of those groups, we will not waste your time or money. We can still help with a lockout, with a dead coin cell, or with working out what to bring to the dealer.

In either case, you will need proof of ownership. BMW does not use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, so dealer paths simply require that proof. Keep your registration and ID handy.

Is it really the key? Problems that look like key failures

Many calls start with 'my key died' and end with something else. A few cases come up again and again on BMWs:

  • Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote stops working, but the chip inside can still start the car.
  • Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, often misdiagnosed as key problems.
  • Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
  • Dead smart-fob coin cells on F and G-chassis cars. The car says 'key not detected', and the emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges on the E83 and worn buttons.
  • Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that get blamed on the key.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your BMW?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and our own mobile vans, not a dispatch service that hands your call to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it, including us. Ask who is coming, what the car needs and whether the job is possible before they start. For a general overview of the service, see our car key replacement service in Commerce or the wider BMW key page.

BMW key service across Commerce: neighborhoods and corridors

Commerce is one ZIP code, 90040, but it has several distinct areas, and we work in all of them. In the older residential pockets around Rosewood Park, Bandini, Bristow Park and Veterans Park, the housing is mostly modest 1940s and 1950s single-family homes, and BMW calls there tend to be spares, fob replacements and lockouts at home. At Rosewood Village, the newer townhome tract, it is much the same.

Along Washington Boulevard, Telegraph Road and Atlantic Boulevard, the calls come from people at work. The area is largely industrial, so a BMW owner may be parked at a warehouse or distribution building when a key goes missing. Near Citadel Outlets and the Commerce Casino area, visitors often need a lockout or a lost-key assessment far from home.

The climate matters a little. Commerce has an inland basin climate with hot, dry summers, and the I-5 corridor flats get little marine moderation. Heat is hard on batteries in a key left in a parked car, and a weak coin cell in a smart fob is a common reason for a 'key not detected' message. If you only need a lockout, our car lockout service in Commerce covers it, and our key fob replacement page covers the fob side. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a BMW key at my location in Commerce?

Yes, for most cars. We bring a mobile van to your car in Commerce, confirm the key era, and tell you whether the job is something we can do. Cars from the newest generations, such as the G70, U11, G60 and G45, are dealer-only for key work.

Can you do all keys lost on a BMW?

It depends on the era. EWS and CAS1 through CAS3+ cars are workable. CAS4 and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars are advanced jobs we confirm by VIN and in person. G-chassis all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only, and we do not promise it.

Why won't you do all keys lost on a G-series BMW?

The one advertised aftermarket route locks the car against future dealer keys. We do not want to leave you with a car the dealer can no longer help, so we do not use it. We would rather tell you honestly to go to the dealer.

My BMW says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?

Often not. On F and G-chassis cars, a dead coin cell in the smart fob is a common cause, and the emergency blade still opens the door. A battery replacement may solve it. Door-handle sensor faults on Comfort Access cars can also be blamed on the key.

My older BMW remote stopped working but the car still starts. What happened?

On 2000s EWS and slot-key cars, the rechargeable key battery dies and the remote stops working, but the chip can still start the car. That can be a repair rather than a new key.

What do I need to show to get a BMW key made?

You will need proof that the car is yours, such as registration and your ID. We ask on every vehicle, and BMW dealer paths require it as well.

How much does a BMW key replacement cost?

The cost depends on the key era, whether you have a working key, whether all keys are lost, the module generation, and the time and place of the call. We explain what applies to your car before any work starts.

Is the car not starting always a key problem?

No. Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars are often mistaken for key issues. We check the key, the battery and the slot or sensors first, so you do not pay for a key you do not need.

Do you work at night and on weekends in Commerce?

Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, and we send a mobile van to Commerce whenever you call.
