The 2009–2012 ES uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus ES key guide.

HYQ14AAB 'E' board 3370 fob, DST40 chip — the board letter must match when replacing a fob. All-keys-lost via OBD smart-code reset with professional tools; older methods required smart-ECU work or dealer service.
What kind of key does a 2009 Lexus ES use?
The 2009 ES uses a smart-proximity key. The fob stays in your pocket or bag, you press the brake, push the start button, and the car recognizes the fob. There is no blade turning in an ignition. Inside the fob is a DST40 transponder chip, and the fob we match to this year is the HYQ14AAB with an E board, number 3370.
That board letter matters more than most owners expect. A fob that looks the same on the outside, with the same buttons and the same shell, can carry a different board and simply not talk to your car. When we replace a fob, we check the board letter against what your ES needs instead of matching by looks.
The fob also comes with a mechanical backup key. That blade is there so you can get into the car when the fob is dead. Starting the car is the fob's job. The problems we see on this setup are:
- A dead fob battery, where the car reports that the key is not detected
- A lost fob, which costs more to replace than a bladed key
- A water-damaged or crushed fob
Duplicate or all keys lost: what is different on this ES?
If you still have a working fob, making another is the simpler job. For this car an original key is needed to duplicate from. Having one in hand keeps the work straightforward.
If every fob is gone, that is still workable. On the 2009 ES, all-keys-lost is done through the OBD port with a smart-code reset using professional tools. Older methods on this kind of system meant smart-ECU work or sending the car to the dealer. Programming here is done by OBD, so the work centers on the car's diagnostic port rather than on pulling modules apart.
Our step-by-step on a typical job looks like this:
- Confirm who you are and that the car is yours.
- Read the VIN and identify the fob board your ES needs, including the board letter.
- Cut the mechanical backup blade for the new fob.
- Program the new fob to the car through the OBD port.
- Test the start button, the door locks, the buttons and the backup blade before we hand it over.
What affects the price of a 2009 ES key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the job decides the cost. These are the things that move it:
Beyond those, the lighter-cost route is usually having a working fob on hand before the last one disappears. Lost-fob replacement on a smart system costs more than a bladed key ever did, and we would rather tell you that now than surprise you later. If you want to compare, the Lexus key page and the ES overview cover the wider model range.

- Getting the correct fob, with the matching board letter
- Cutting the mechanical backup blade

Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What do we confirm by VIN before starting?
The technical details above are verified for this model year: the DST40 chip, the OBD programming method, the original-key requirement for duplicating, and the HYQ14AAB E board 3370 fob. Even so, we confirm by VIN and by looking at your fob in person before any work. If your car or fob turns out to differ from what we expect, we will tell you plainly before we start, including if a dealer visit would really be necessary.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before work begins. Ask us too, and ask for the same clarity on the work to be done.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, which is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you reach one company, not a dispatch middleman passing your job to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2009 Lexus ES use a transponder key?
It uses a smart-proximity push-to-start fob that contains a DST40 transponder chip. There is also a mechanical backup key for the door.
My ES says key not detected. Is the fob lost?
Not necessarily. A dead smart-fob battery is a common cause of that message on this car. Rule out the battery first. If the fob still isn't detected, it may be water-damaged or crushed.
Can you make a new fob if I lost all my keys?
Yes. For this setup, all-keys-lost is possible through the OBD port using a smart-code reset with professional tools. We confirm the details by VIN first.
Do I need an original key to make a copy?
For duplicating, yes, an original key is needed. If you have no key at all, the all-keys-lost process applies instead.
Why does the fob board letter matter?
Your ES takes the HYQ14AAB fob with an E board, number 3370. A fob with a different board letter may look identical but won't work with the car, so we match the letter on replacement.
Do you program the fob at the dealer or on-site?
Programming on this model year is done by OBD, so we can do it ourselves at our storefront or with a mobile van. If we find your car is an exception that needs the dealer, we'll say so honestly.
How much will a replacement fob cost?
It depends on whether you have a working key, which fob you need, the blade cutting, and where the work happens. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll walk through your situation.
