2000 Lexus ES key replacement

A 2000 Lexus ES uses a 4C transponder key on a long TOY40 blade, with a separate remote. We cut and program replacements, including all keys lost, and confirm details by VIN. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

ES300: 4C chip on the long TOY40 blade with a separate remote. All-keys-lost on the earliest cars can require an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add — confirmed by year and VIN.

What kind of key does a 2000 Lexus ES use?

The 2000 ES is a transponder-key car. There is no push-to-start here. You have a metal key with a chip in the head, and the car will not stay running unless the immobilizer reads that chip. The chip family on this year is 4C, and the ES300 key is the long TOY40 blade. The remote that locks and unlocks the doors is a separate piece, not built into the key.

For an owner, that setup matters in a few practical ways:

  • A plain hardware-store copy will turn the ignition lock but will not start the car, because it has no chip the car recognizes.
  • The key blade is laser-cut, so it has to be cut on the right equipment and not just ground down like a basic flat key.
  • Because the remote is separate, a dead remote and a lost key are two different problems. Fixing one does not fix the other.
  • The car has a mechanical backup key, so there is a physical key path to the locks and ignition even when the electronics are the issue.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

If you still have a working original, making a copy is the simpler job. For this year the original key is needed to duplicate. We cut a new TOY40 blade and program a 4C chip so the car accepts it. The programming on this car is done through the OBD port, so it can be handled at your location with our mobile vans, or at our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.

All keys lost is possible on this car, and we do it. It is a slower job than a duplicate, though. On the earliest cars of this generation, an all-keys-lost situation can call for an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add of a new key. That is more involved than simply pairing a spare. Whether your car falls into that group depends on its exact build, so we confirm by year and VIN before we promise a method.

If you are down to one key, that is the time to make a spare. Copying a key you hold is the lighter-effort route compared with starting from nothing.

How we handle a 2000 ES key job

Here is the usual order of work. Details shift a little depending on whether you have a key in hand.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. We ask for the year, model and VIN, and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the key setup against the VIN so we are not guessing about which immobilizer version your car has.
  3. We cut the laser-cut TOY40 blade to fit your ignition and door locks, working from your original key or from the lock itself if all keys are lost.
  4. We program the 4C transponder chip through the OBD port, or tell you plainly if your car needs the immobilizer reset route instead.
  5. We test that the key turns the ignition, starts the car and runs, and that it locks and unlocks the doors as it should. If you also need a remote, we handle that as its own item.

What affects the price of a 2000 Lexus ES key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job decides the cost. These are the real factors:

  • Duplicate versus all keys lost. Copying from a working original is usually the more economical route. Starting with no key takes more work.
  • Whether an immobilizer ECU reset is needed. If your car is one of the earliest builds that requires it, expect more labor than a straightforward OBD add.
  • Whether the lock itself is worn. High-mileage cars often have worn ignition wafers, and a key cut to a worn lock may not turn smoothly. Sometimes the lock needs attention, not just a new key.
  • Key and remote. A new key and a replacement remote are separate items on this car.
  • Where you are. Coming to you with a mobile van differs from you bringing the car or key to the storefront.

Common problems and what we confirm by VIN

Three issues come up on these cars. Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars can make a key stick or refuse to turn. A worn or chipped laser-cut blade can stop turning the lock, even though the chip is fine. And a non-transponder copy will never start the car, no matter how well it is cut. If your key turns but the engine will not start, the chip side is the first thing to check.

One honest note: the chip family and key type for this year are verified, but the exact all-keys-lost method is the part we do not assume from a chart. Early-build cars can differ, so we confirm by year and VIN, in person if needed, before we commit to a plan. If you want to see how other model years differ, start at our Lexus ES key page or the wider Lexus key overview.

We have been in business since 1987, and David oversees the work. You deal with one company, with a storefront and our own vans, not a dispatch middleman. If you would rather talk first, use the contact page or call. For other makes, see our car key services.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2000 Lexus ES have a transponder chip in the key?

Yes. It uses a 4C transponder chip in a long TOY40 blade key. The car will not start with a key that lacks a programmed chip.

Can you make a key if I lost all my keys?

Yes, all keys lost is possible on this car. On the earliest cars it can require an immobilizer ECU reset instead of a quick OBD add, so we confirm by year and VIN first.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Lexus?

No. A non-transponder copy may turn the lock, but it has no chip the immobilizer recognizes, so the engine will not start.

Do I need my original key to make a copy?

For a duplicate on this year, yes, the original key is needed. If you have no working key, that falls under all keys lost, which is a different process.

Is the remote part of the key on a 2000 ES?

On the ES300 the remote is separate from the key. Replacing a key and replacing a remote are two separate items.

How is the key programmed?

Programming is done through the OBD port. No special NASTF/SDRM access is required for this year. Early cars needing an ECU reset are handled as described above.

Why does my key stick or refuse to turn in the ignition?

On high-mileage cars the cause is often worn ignition wafers, or a worn or chipped key blade. We check both the key and the lock before deciding what to replace.

Should I ask a locksmith for a license?

Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts.
