The 2019–2026 3 Series uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW 3 Series key guide.

G-chassis BDC2 car: add-a-key is possible for specialists with a working key (Autel BDC02 licenses; Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost). True all-keys-lost is dealer territory on these cars — the one advertised aftermarket AKL route (Yanhua ACDP) carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys, so we do not offer it.
What kind of key does a 2019 BMW 3 Series use?
The 2019 3 Series is a smart-proximity car. You carry a fob, the car senses it, and you start the engine with the push-button. There is no blade to turn in an ignition. Inside the fob is an ID49 transponder chip, the PCF7953P, which is part of the Hitag Pro family. That chip detail is verified for this year.
For you as the owner, that means a key is not something a hardware store can copy. The fob has to be paired electronically to the car through its diagnostic port. It also means the fob is a real piece of electronics with a battery that eventually dies.
Every fob has a mechanical backup key inside it. It will not start the car, but it lets you into the vehicle if the fob battery is flat. Know where yours is before you need it.
Spare key or all keys lost: what is actually possible?
This is the part owners most need to hear plainly. Your 2019 3 Series is a G-chassis car with a BDC2 body control module, and that changes what a locksmith can honestly offer.
Adding a key is possible when you still have one working key. Duplication on this car needs the original key present. With that key in hand, a specialist can program a new fob through the OBD port. We can do that, and it is the sensible time to do it, before you are stranded.
- One working key: we can add a spare by OBD programming.
- No working key: this is dealer territory on these cars.
- We do not offer the aftermarket all-keys-lost route that exists for this module. The vendor's own warning says it can lock the BDC2 against future dealer-issued keys, and we will not put your car at that risk.
Why we send true all-keys-lost jobs to the dealer
Some tools can add a key to a BDC2 car, but the bench adapter that works for one common key brand explicitly cannot handle all-keys-lost. The one advertised aftermarket route that claims to can, carries that warning about locking the module. A locksmith who tells you it is routine on this car is skipping that detail.
If you have lost every key, we would rather tell you that now than start work and leave you worse off. Call and we will explain the dealer route and what to have ready, such as proof of ownership and your VIN. If you have a single key left, do not wait. Copying while one exists keeps you out of the harder situation.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2019 3 Series key?
We will not quote a number on a web page, because it depends on your specific car. The factors are straightforward:
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key from an existing one is the more economical route compared with anything involving the dealer.
- The fob itself. A smart fob for this car is a genuine electronic part, and the cost reflects that. Lost-fob replacement on these cars is expensive and usually involves the dealer.
- Programming. The work is done through the OBD port with specialist equipment, and the licenses that equipment needs are part of the cost of doing it properly.
- Where the car is. If it can be brought to our Westwood storefront, that is different from sending a mobile van to you.
- Extra features. Cars with BMW Digital Key enrolled can need additional steps.
Dead fob and Digital Key problems
Before you assume a key is lost or broken, check the battery. The most common complaint on this car is a 'key not detected' warning from a dead coin cell in the fob. Replacing the battery is often the whole fix. If it does not clear the warning, bring the fob in and we will test it.
Some 2019 cars are equipped with BMW Digital Key, which lets a phone or card act as a key. Enrollment problems with it do happen on equipped cars. We can help you work out whether the trouble is the physical fob, the car, or the phone setup, but we will say so honestly if the fix sits with the dealer.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The chip family and programming method above are verified for this year. Trim, build date and options can still vary, including whether your car has Digital Key. So we confirm by VIN and in person before we promise anything on your specific car.
Wilshire Lock & Key has operated since 1987 from 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, with mobile vans for jobs that cannot come to us. You speak with our own company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car.
For more on the model, see our 3 Series key page, our wider BMW key service overview, or contact us with your VIN. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered around the clock.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a spare key for my 2019 BMW 3 Series?
Yes, if you still have one working key. Duplication on this car needs the original key present, and we program the new fob through the OBD port.
What if I have lost all my 2019 3 Series keys?
On this G-chassis BDC2 car, true all-keys-lost is dealer work. We do not offer the aftermarket route because its vendor warns it can lock the module against future dealer keys.
Why does my car say the key is not detected?
The usual cause is a dead coin-cell battery in the fob. Replace it first. If the warning stays, the fob or the car may need testing.
Can I still get in if the fob battery is dead?
Yes. The fob contains a mechanical backup key that opens the door. It will not start the car, so replace the battery soon.
Does a 2019 3 Series use a transponder chip?
Yes. The verified chip is the ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro). It is paired to the car electronically rather than cut like an old key.
Can you help with BMW Digital Key on my phone?
We can look at enrollment problems on equipped cars and tell you whether the issue is the fob, car or phone. If it needs the dealer, we will say so. We confirm by VIN first.
Where do I start if I am not sure what I need?
Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and tell us how many working keys you have. That one answer decides which route makes sense.
