The 2006–2011 3 Series uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW 3 Series key guide.

Transition year: the 2006 sedan is the new E90 (CAS slot fob, ID46) while 2006 coupes/convertibles are still E46 (EWS, ID44 diamond key) — we confirm body style/VIN first. Earliest E90s use CAS2; the ID46 key family is the same. CAS slot-key car: the fob inserts into a dash slot and the Start button fires the car (hands-free Comfort Access was optional). Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are documented OBD procedures for E-series CAS3/CAS3+ (e.g., Abrites BN014/BN016); late CAS3+ 'ISTAP' firmware can require a flash downgrade first — specialist, not dealer-only.
What kind of key does a 2006 BMW 3 Series use?
2006 is the year BMW changed generations, and that matters for your key. The 2006 sedan is the new E90. Its key is a rechargeable fob that slides into a slot in the dash, and you press the Start button to fire the car. Inside the fob is an ID46 transponder chip (PCF7945, Hitag2 family). Hands-free Comfort Access was an option on these cars, so yours may or may not open the doors without the fob leaving your pocket.
The fob also carries a mechanical backup key. If the fob battery is flat or the fob will not talk to the car, that blade still opens the driver's door.
Here is the catch for owners of the older body style. The 2006 coupes and convertibles are still the previous E46 generation, which uses a different immobilizer system and a diamond-shaped key with a different chip. Two cars with the same year and badge can need different keys, so we confirm the body style first.
- Sedan (E90): slot fob, Start button, ID46 chip, mechanical backup blade
- Coupe and convertible (E46): older system and diamond key, confirmed by VIN before we cut or program anything
- Comfort Access: optional, so check whether your doors unlock hands-free
Do I need an original key, or can you work from all keys lost?
You do not need an original key. Adding a key and replacing a full set from zero are both documented procedures on this setup, and both are done through the OBD port. No special manufacturer-network access is required for the programming itself.
Having a working key makes the job simpler and usually the more economical route, because we are adding to the car rather than rebuilding its key list. But if you have lost every key, that is not a dead end and it does not automatically mean a tow to the dealer.
One caution: some later units in the E-series family carry newer firmware that needs an extra step before new keys will accept. It is specialist work, not dealer-only, but it is a reason we look at the car before we promise a timeline.
How we handle a 2006 3 Series key job
The order matters more than speed on a car with an immobilizer. This is how we normally run it.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the body style, the VIN, and how many keys you still have.
- We confirm which generation your car is, since sedan and coupe differ this year.
- A technician comes to you in a mobile van, or you visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
- We cut the new blade, then connect through the OBD port and program the new fob to the car.
- We test the fob in the dash slot, the Start button, the door locks, and the backup blade before we call it done.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2006 3 Series key?
We will not quote a number before we know your car, and here is what moves the cost:
- Whether you have a working key (adding a key is usually lighter work than all keys lost)
- Body style and generation, since the sedan and the coupe use different key hardware
- How many keys you want made
- Condition of the old fob: a cracked shell or worn buttons may mean a new fob or only a new shell
- Whether the car needs the extra firmware step mentioned above
- Location and time of day, because a mobile visit has different logistics than a storefront stop
What we confirm in person, and why call us
Our data on this year is mixed because of the generation change, so we say plainly: we verify body style and VIN before we order a fob or start programming. If someone gives you a firm answer without asking for your VIN on a 2006 3 Series, be cautious.
Before you hand any key over to anyone, remember that California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, not a dispatch middleman. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366, and our contact page is there if you would rather write.

Frequently asked questions
Is my 2006 BMW 3 Series key a smart key?
On the sedan, it is a slot-style fob. You insert it in the dash and press Start. It is not a pure keep-it-in-your-pocket system unless the optional Comfort Access was fitted. Coupes and convertibles are the older generation, so we confirm by VIN.
Can you make a key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All keys lost is a documented OBD procedure for this setup, and no original key is required. Some later units need an extra firmware step first, which we check when we see the car.
My car still starts but the fob seems dead. What is wrong?
A worn-out rechargeable fob battery is a common cause. The dash slot can still read the fob, so the car often starts. The backup blade opens the door. Cracked shells and a worn dash slot are other usual culprits.
Could a key failure actually be something else?
Yes. Electronic steering-lock (ELV) faults can look like a key problem. We check for that before programming a new fob so you do not pay for a key you did not need.
Do 2006 coupes use the same key as the sedan?
No. The sedan is the new generation with an ID46 slot fob, while coupes and convertibles are still the older generation with a diamond key. That is why we confirm the body style and VIN first.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Should I ask for a license?
Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith to show it before work begins.
