2012 BMW 3 Series key replacement

A 2012 BMW 3 Series uses a push-button smart key with an ID49 chip on the sedan and wagon, while the coupe and convertible use a different slot-style fob. We can replace it, even with all keys lost, by OBD programming. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm your car by VIN.

The 2012–2018 3 Series uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW 3 Series key guide.

Depends on body style: the sedan/wagon is the new F30/F31 (FEM module, ID49 smart key) while the coupe/convertible is still the E92/E93 (CAS slot fob, ID46) — confirmed per VIN. FEM/BDC body-module car: advanced specialist work. Most tools bench-preprocess the module (Godiag-style test platforms are sold for exactly this); Abrites documents a full-OBD path including all-keys-lost for F-series FEM/BDC. We quote it as a specialist job, not dealer-only.

What key does a 2012 BMW 3 Series use?

2012 was a split year for the 3 Series, and the key depends on your body style. The sedan and wagon are the newer F30/F31 generation. They use a FEM body module and an ID49 smart key (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro chip). The coupe and convertible are still the E92/E93 generation, with a CAS slot fob and an ID46 chip.

For the sedan and wagon, that means a proximity key and push-to-start. The car senses the fob in your pocket, and you start it with the button. Every fob also carries a mechanical backup key, so a dead fob never has to lock you out of the door.

Most day-to-day trouble with these keys is small and fixable. Here is what shows up most often:

  • A dead coin cell in the fob, which brings up a 'key not detected' warning. The emergency start position still works, so the car is rarely stranded. Try a fresh battery before assuming the fob has failed.
  • Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults on cars that have that option. That is a car-side problem, and a new key will not cure it.
  • A lost fob costs more to replace than the older E-series keys did, because the car's body module has to be involved.

Spare key or all keys lost: what changes?

For this setup, the original key is not required to make a new one. That matters if you have lost your only fob. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on the 2012 3 Series. It is more involved than adding a spare, but it does not mean a tow to the dealer by default.

Programming is done through the OBD port. This setup does not call for a NASTF SDRM secure-data step, so the work centers on the car's module rather than on registry paperwork. Here is how we usually handle it:

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 with the year, body style and, if you can, the VIN.
  2. We confirm which generation you have, since the sedan/wagon and coupe/convertible differ.
  3. A technician comes to you with a mobile van, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront.
  4. We verify ownership, then cut the new key and program it to the car by OBD.
  5. We test the door, the start button or slot, and the mechanical backup key before we call the job done.

What affects the price of a replacement 2012 3 Series key?

We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on a few things we need to see. The main ones:

  • Body style: F30/F31 smart-key work is different from E92/E93 fob work.
  • Spare versus all keys lost. Starting from zero keys takes more steps.
  • Whether the car's FEM module needs to be preprocessed on the bench before the new key will accept programming.
  • How many keys you want. Making two in one visit is usually the more economical route than coming back later.
  • Where the car is. A mobile call involves travel, while bringing it to the storefront does not.
  • Whether the fob shell is damaged, or only the battery is dead. Sometimes you need no new key at all.

What we confirm by VIN on this year

Our records on this model year conflict, and we won't pretend otherwise. The split between the F30/F31 sedan and wagon and the E92/E93 coupe and convertible is why. The VIN settles which system your car has, and we check it before we promise anything.

The sedan and wagon fall under FEM/BDC body-module work. That is advanced specialist work. Most tools preprocess the module on the bench, and test platforms are sold for exactly that purpose. Abrites documents a full-OBD path for F-series FEM/BDC cars, all-keys-lost included. We quote it as a specialist job. It is not dealer-only.

For the coupe and convertible, we confirm the CAS and fob details in person. If something about your car does not match what is described here, we'll tell you plainly before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a 2012 BMW 3 Series key if I've lost every key?

Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup, and the original key is not needed. We program the new key by OBD. The sedan and wagon are specialist FEM-module work, which we handle as such.

Is my 2012 3 Series key an ID49 or an ID46?

It depends on body style. The sedan and wagon (F30/F31) use an ID49 smart key. The coupe and convertible (E92/E93) use an ID46 CAS slot fob. We confirm it from your VIN.

My car says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. A dead coin cell in the fob is the common cause. The emergency start position still works, so you can usually get the car going. Try a new battery first. If the warning stays, the fob or the car needs testing.

Do you only do this at the dealer or at your shop?

Neither. You can come to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, or we can send a mobile van to you. This is not a dealer-only job.

Does my 2012 3 Series have a backup mechanical key?

Yes. The fob carries a mechanical backup key, so you can open the door if the fob battery dies. We can cut a new one during a replacement.

Why is a lost fob costlier than on older BMWs?

These cars use a body module that has to accept the new key, and the work can include preprocessing that module. Older E-series keys involved less. Body style, number of keys and location decide the final cost.
