What do Nissan owners in Burbank usually need?

Nissan key calls in Burbank tend to sort themselves by where the car is parked. The city mixes bungalow streets, hillside lanes, large apartment complexes and a working airport, and each one produces a different kind of key problem.

Travelers at Hollywood Burbank Airport are the clearest case. Someone returns from a trip to a dead fob battery, or the only key went missing along the way. The car is parked, the luggage is in hand, and a tow to a dealer is the last thing they want. Mobile service exists for that situation, because the work happens where the car sits.

Apartment residents are the second group. Downtown Burbank and the area near the Chandler Bikeway have large controlled-access complexes, and when a key is lost or a fob dies inside one, moving the car is rarely simple. We come to the car. Tell us about gate or building access when you call so the van can get in.

The third group is the working day. People who park near the Media District for a long shift often discover a missing key at the end of it. The quieter version happens on older streets like Magnolia Park: a spare nobody ever made, until the first key finally breaks. Typical requests look like this:

  • A spare made while one working key still exists, which is usually the more economical situation
  • A replacement after a lost or stolen key
  • A smart fob or flip key that cracked, died or lost its buttons
  • A no-start with a flashing key or security light
  • A worn key that sticks in the ignition. If you are simply locked out, see Burbank car lockout service

How does mobile Nissan key service work at the curb?

Our vans work out of the Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Burbank is roughly 16 miles from that base. The van carries the equipment, so most of the job happens beside your car, in your garage or in your parking space. A typical visit goes like this.

  1. You call and tell us the year, model and trim, whether the car starts with a blade in the ignition, a twist knob or a push button, and how many working keys you still have.
  2. We work out which key system your car uses. Where catalogs disagree, we confirm by VIN instead of guessing.
  3. We tell you plainly whether the job can be finished at the curb or needs more than that.
  4. At the car, we ask for proof that the vehicle is yours before we make or program anything.
  5. We cut the blade if there is one, then program the key through the OBD-II port with professional tools.
  6. We test everything: starting the engine, locking and unlocking, and any existing keys you want to keep working.

Which Nissan key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Nissan changed its key technology several times, and your car's era decides what is inside the key and how it gets programmed. This is a summary, not a promise about any one car. Some catalogs disagree on certain years, which is why we confirm by VIN before committing to a part.

  • Late 1990s to mid-2000s: Nissan's NATS immobilizer arrived across the line, mostly with a Texas 4D60 fixed-code chip. That covers the Altima 1999-2004, Sentra 2000-2006, Pathfinder through 2004 and Frontier 2002-2004. The 1999-2003 Maxima is a genuine split, with catalogs listing both the 4D60 and a Philips ID41.
  • Mid-2000s onward: A Philips ID46 (Hitag-2) chip follows, on the Murano from 2003, Maxima and Titan in 2004, Pathfinder and Frontier in 2005, Altima in 2005-2006, and Sentra and Versa in 2007. The Frontier kept a plain bladed ID46 key all the way through 2021.
  • Intelligent Keys, model by model: The 2007 Altima made push-button start standard on every trim. The 2007-2008 Maxima used a twist-knob column switch. The 2008-2013 Rogue offered a twist-knob Intelligent Key above a bladed base key.
  • A short ID47 (Hitag-3) window: This covers the 2013-2015 Altima and, depending on the catalog, the early R52 Pathfinder. We verify that one rather than assume.
  • Hitag-AES (4A) platform: It began with the 2014 Rogue's smart fob, though catalogs list a bladed flip key for the base Rogue S through 2020. The 2015-2016 Murano, Titan, Maxima and Altima followed, and KR5TXN-series fobs are standard across 2019 and newer models.

Why the key type matters before you buy anything

A bladed key with a chip is a different job from a smart fob, and two Nissans from the same year can need different parts. Fobs bought online with the wrong FCC or IC numbers are a common cause of failed pairings, so check the numbers on your original before you order, or call us first. More model detail is on our Nissan car key page, and fob-specific work is covered under Burbank key fob replacement.

What happens if you have lost every Nissan key?

All keys lost is more involved than adding a spare, but on many Nissans it is still a driveway job. Nissan security is built around the body control module, the BCM. On older NATS cars, meaning the 4D60 and ID41 cars and most ID46 years, a 4-digit PIN comes from the BCM, and professional locksmith tools can program new keys, all-keys-lost included, through the OBD-II port.

Newer models moved to a rolling scheme. The BCM yields a 22-digit PrePIN that converts to a 20-digit PIN, usually through the tool's own calculator or an online service. It adds steps, but it is routine for the right equipment.

The harder cases are recent keyless models with locked RH850-type BCM or HFM modules. There, all-keys-lost can require a bench read of the module, with a tool such as the Abrites NN010, or an online calculation, instead of a quick OBD session.

Nissan has not fitted an FCA-style secure gateway on most of these models, and NASTF SDRM credentials are generally not a hard requirement through the 2010s. The honest limit is the newest cars. Aftermarket coverage for 2022 and newer trucks and SUVs, and the 2025 and newer Murano, is still maturing, so some of those jobs may be dealer-only or specialist-only until tool support settles. If yours is in that group, we will say so on the first call. More on the process is on our lost car key replacement page.

Why won't my Nissan start when the key seems fine?

Not every no-start is a key failure, and several look exactly like one. Worth knowing before you pay for a key you may not need.

  • A failing electronic steering-column lock on 2007-2014 push-button models (Altima, Maxima, Murano) can cause a no-start with a flashing key light. A new key will not fix that.
  • A NATS security light that stays on solid means the immobilizer is not reading the chip, often a worn key or a badly cloned one.
  • Worn ignition wafers and worn blades on high-mileage bladed-key cars and trucks. If the key hangs up, deal with it before it strands you.
  • A dead smart-fob battery gives a 'key not detected' message. Holding the fob against the start button or knob usually still starts the car, so try that first.
  • A hardware-store copy cut without a transponder will open the doors but not start the engine.
  • An aftermarket or used fob whose FCC ID or IC numbers do not match the original will refuse to pair.

What affects the cost of a Nissan key in Burbank?

We do not post numbers on a web page, because honest pricing depends on facts about your car that we have to confirm. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Key type: a chipped blade, a flip key, a twist-knob Intelligent Key and a push-button smart fob are different parts with different programming.
  • Whether you still have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost.
  • The model year. Newer rolling-PIN systems, and locked modules that need a bench read, take more equipment and time than older NATS cars.
  • How many keys you want programmed in one visit.
  • Whether a blade has to be cut.
  • Getting the right part. A wrong online fob can mean paying twice.
  • Time of day and location, since a mobile visit includes the trip to you.

Should you use the dealer or a locksmith for a Nissan key?

Both are legitimate options. The dealer has factory access, and for a few cars it is the only route. A mobile locksmith comes to you and usually handles older and mid-range models without trouble.

The dealer makes more sense when your Nissan is among the newest generation, where aftermarket support is still maturing, or when the car is already there for other work. A locksmith makes more sense when the car cannot move without a key, since a car with no working key generally has to be towed to the dealer, which is a cost and a hassle by itself. It also fits when the car is in a parking garage or at the airport, or when it is an older NATS or ID46 Nissan.

Whichever you choose, California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts.

Nissan key service around Burbank: neighborhoods and ZIP codes

We cover Burbank's ZIP codes, including 91501, 91502, 91504, 91505 and 91506. That means Magnolia Park, Downtown Burbank, the Media District, the Rancho District, the Golden State District, the Northwest District and the South San Fernando Boulevard district, plus the hillside streets above Glenoaks Boulevard.

Where the car sits shapes the job. On the flats and in Rancho District driveways, we work at the curb or in the drive. Around Burbank Town Center, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and Hollywood Burbank Airport, the car is often in a lot or structure, so tell us exactly where it is parked.

Summer Valley heat makes a locked car a real problem, and hillside homes get more sun than the flats, so a lockout should not wait. Burbank is inland with no salt-air corrosion, so a worn key here is more likely years of use than corrosion. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Nissan key if I have lost every key?

On many Nissans, yes. Older NATS cars can be programmed through the OBD-II port even with no keys left. Some recent keyless models with locked modules need a bench read or an online calculation, and the newest models may be dealer-only. We confirm by VIN on the phone.

Can you program a push-button Nissan fob?

Yes, for most models. Push-button systems vary by model and year, from the 2007 Altima to the KR5TXN-series fobs on 2019 and newer cars. Tell us the year and model, and we will check what applies.

My Nissan flashes a key light and will not start. Do I need a new key?

Not always. On 2007-2014 push-button Altima, Maxima and Murano models, a failing electronic steering-column lock can mimic a key problem. Try holding the fob against the start button first. If it still fails, call us and describe what the dash does.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Nissan?

Probably not. A copy cut without a transponder chip can open the doors but will not start the engine. The car needs a key with the right chip, programmed to its immobilizer.

Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?

Sometimes. Fobs with the wrong FCC or IC numbers are a common cause of failed pairings, so match the numbers on your original fob before buying. Calling us first can save you from paying twice.

Can you meet me at Hollywood Burbank Airport?

Yes, we do car key work for travelers parked there. Tell us the exact lot or level when you call, along with your Nissan's year and model, so we know what to bring.

Do you handle 2022 and newer Nissans?

It depends on the model. Aftermarket coverage for 2022 and newer trucks and SUVs, and the 2025 and newer Murano, is still maturing, so some jobs may be dealer-only for now. We will tell you on the first call.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins, and be cautious of anyone who will not give a straight answer.
