Nissan Murano key replacement in Los Angeles

Most Nissan Murano keys we replace are push-button Intelligent Keys, and almost all are programmed through the OBD port. Older 2003-2007 bladed transponder keys are OBD-programmed too. The newest 2025-2026 models are the exception, so we check coverage first. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Which Nissan Murano key do you have?

The Murano has run through four generations since 2003, and the key changed with them. A 2005 uses a bladed key in an ignition. A 2012 uses a push-button Intelligent Key. A 2025 is an all-new design whose aftermarket key data is still maturing. Same badge, three different jobs.

The table on this page lists each model year with its key type and chip family. This text explains what those rows mean when you are standing next to a car that will not start.

  • Z50, 2003-2007: bladed transponder key, keyed ignition.
  • Z51, 2009-2014: Intelligent Key with push-button start (there is no 2008 Murano).
  • Z52, 2015-2024: push-button start with a 4A Hitag-AES smart key.
  • Z53, 2025-2026: all-new design; chip and programming path not yet confirmed.

What does a 2003-2007 Murano need?

The first-generation Murano (Z50) has a keyed ignition and a bladed transponder key. For 2005 through 2007 the chip is verified: ID46, the Hitag-2 family (PCF7952). Programming is through the OBD port, and these cars have a mechanical backup key.

The 2003 and 2004 years are where catalogs disagree. One source lists both ID46 and a Texas 4D chip for the earliest Muranos; the common US listing is the NI04T ID46 key. We do not treat that as settled. We read the stamp on your existing key and confirm by VIN in person before any blank is cut.

Typical calls on these cars: a worn blade after years of use, a cracked shell or dead remote, or a hardware-store copy that turns in the ignition but will not start the engine. A copy cut without a transponder has no way to talk to the car.

What does a 2009-2014 Murano need?

Nissan skipped 2008; there is no 2008 Murano. The second generation (Z51) returned for 2009 with an Intelligent Key and push-button start across the line. The chip is verified as ID46 (Hitag-2, PCF7952), the fob is the KR55WK48903 style, and a locksmith source describes OBD registration. A mechanical backup key sits inside the fob.

2014 needs care. One catalog starts the newer 4A (Hitag-AES) Murano listing at 2014, but the Z51 body and its ID46 Intelligent Key ran through the 2014 model year, and the redesigned Z52 arrived as a 2015 model. Our data marks 2014 as conflicting, so we confirm from the part number on your fob and by VIN before ordering.

Owners here mostly need a spare before the last fob dies, or a replacement after one is lost or soaked. Smart keys cost more to replace than older bladed keys.

What does a 2015-2024 Murano need?

The third generation (Z52) moved to the 4A chip, Hitag-AES, with push-button start. For 2015 through 2018 this is verified, and the Murano shares its KR5S180144014 IC-204 smart key with the Pathfinder and Titan. For 2019 and 2020 the fob is a KR5TXN-series 4A unit, also verified.

2021 through 2024 are unverified in our data. The chip family is verified for the Z52 generation, but catalog coverage runs through 2020, and we carry it across the unchanged run to 2024, the final Z52 year. We expect the same setup, yet we confirm the exact fob and programming setup by VIN, including whether any extra security access applies, before we order or commit.

The classic failure here is an aftermarket fob whose FCC ID and IC numbers do not match the original. It looks right and fails to pair, so we match those numbers first.

What about a 2025 or 2026 Murano?

The Z53 is an all-new Murano with push-button start and a mechanical backup key. Beyond that we cannot state facts: the chip family and the locksmith programming paths are not yet confirmed.

Lost-key work on these years may be dealer-only for now, and our data does not confirm that an all-keys-lost job is possible. We check current tool coverage before quoting. If the dealer is your only route, we say so on the first call instead of stringing you along. If you still have a working key, tell us, since a copy starts from an original.

Spare key or all keys lost: what changes?

Across every Murano year in our data, a duplicate needs an original key to copy from. A spare is the more economical route, and the best time to make one is while you still hold a working key.

All keys lost is possible for 2003 through 2024 per our data and unconfirmed for 2025-2026. It is a bigger job because the key has to be produced from the VIN and registered to the car with nothing to copy.

Here is how an all-keys-lost Murano call usually goes:

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 with the year, where the car is parked, and what you have, if anything.
  2. We identify the key type from the VIN and tell you which parts of your year are verified, unverified or conflicting.
  3. A mobile van comes to the car, or you bring it to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
  4. We confirm ownership, produce the correct key, and program it through the OBD port.
  5. We test start, doors, remote and the mechanical backup key before you leave.

Is Murano programming OBD or dealer-only?

For 2003 through 2024 our data lists OBD programming: a tool plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash, registers the new key, and the car is ready. No tow to a dealer is needed for that, which is the main reason people call a locksmith.

The honest limits: 2021-2024 are unverified, and 2025-2026 programming is unknown. Tool coverage changes over time, so we check current coverage by VIN rather than recite a rule. When a dealer is the only option, we tell you.

What affects the cost of a Murano key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your car. These are the things that move it:

We explain the cost once we have identified your key, before work starts. A battery or shell is usually the lighter-cost fix when the fob itself still works.

  • Key type: a bladed key, an Intelligent Key and a 4A smart key are very different parts.
  • Generation and chip family, which decide the fob and the programming tool.
  • Spare versus all keys lost; copying is lighter work than producing a key from the VIN.
  • Original fob or aftermarket fob; a mismatched FCC ID or IC number can mean paying twice.
  • Whether you need a full remote, a replacement shell, or just a battery.
  • Whether we come to the car or you bring it to the storefront.

What key problems do Muranos actually have?

These come up repeatedly, and several look like a key failure when they are not.

If a new key does not cure a flashing key light, stop buying keys and have the lock system checked.

  • Dead fob battery (2009 on): the dash says 'key not detected'. Backup: hold the fob against the start button, then replace the battery.
  • ESCL failure (2009-2014): the electronic steering-column lock can fail on this era's push-button Nissans, giving a no-start with a flashing key light. It is often mistaken for a key problem, so we test before selling you a fob you do not need.
  • Water-damaged or crushed fobs (2015 on).
  • Aftermarket fobs with mismatched FCC ID or IC numbers that will not pair.
  • 2003-2007: worn ignition wafers and key blades on high-mileage cars, cracked shells, broken remote buttons and dead remote batteries.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which will not start the engine.

When should you call us, and when the dealer?

Call us for a lost or spare key, a broken fob, or a Murano that will not start and you cannot tell why. Wilshire Lock & Key has served Los Angeles since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans covering 140 cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered around the clock.

You deal with one company, with no dispatch middleman between you and the person at your car. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

The dealer makes sense when our check shows a dealer-only path, as can happen with 2025-2026 lost-key work, or when the problem is a warranty repair.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number and verify it before work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can you copy a Murano key if I have lost every key?

Copying needs an original to work from. With none, it is an all-keys-lost job, which our data shows as possible through OBD for 2003-2024 and unconfirmed for 2025-2026. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will check your VIN.

Is there a 2008 Nissan Murano?

No. The first generation ran 2003-2007 and the second began with the 2009 model year, so there is no 2008 row in our table.

Which chip does a 2003 or 2004 Murano use?

Sources conflict. One lists both ID46 and a Texas 4D chip, while the common US listing is the NI04T ID46 key. We read the stamp on your key and confirm by VIN in person before cutting anything.

Is a 2014 Murano the old key or the new one?

Our data marks it conflicting. The Z51 body and its ID46 Intelligent Key ran through the 2014 model year, while the 4A Z52 arrived as a 2015 model. We confirm from your fob part number and VIN.

My Murano says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?

Often it is only the fob battery. Hold the fob against the start button to start the car, then replace the battery. On 2009-2014 cars, a no-start with a flashing key light can be an ESCL fault instead.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Murano?

Not on transponder or smart-key models. A plain cut key may turn in the lock, but with no transponder the engine will not run.

Can you make a key for a 2025 or 2026 Murano?

These all-new Z53 models have chip and programming data that is not yet confirmed, and lost-key work may be dealer-only for now. We check current tool coverage before quoting and tell you plainly if the dealer is the only route.

Do I have to bring my Murano to you?

Not necessarily. Our mobile vans come to the car within our service area, or you can visit the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.

We cover all these cities
