What kind of key does a Nissan Titan use?

The Titan has used two different key systems, and which one you have decides nearly everything about the job. Trucks from 2004 through 2015, the first generation (A60), use a bladed transponder key with an ID46 chip (Philips Hitag-2) and a keyed ignition. Trucks from 2016 through 2024, the second generation (A61), use a push-button Intelligent Key with a 4A (Hitag AES) chip. Titan production ended with the 2024 model year.

So there is no single 'Titan key.' A 2009 Titan and a 2021 Titan share a name, but their keys are different technologies and are cut and programmed differently. The year-by-year table on this page shows each model year; the sections below explain what it means for you, and where we can speak with certainty versus where we check by VIN. If you are comparing other models, our Nissan key replacement overview covers the brand, and the main car key services page covers everything else we do.

What does a 2004–2015 Titan owner need?

These trucks use the NI04T bladed key with an ID46 transponder chip. Our data is verified for every model year in the range, and the ignition is a standard keyed ignition for the whole generation. There is no push button anywhere in this era.

Most owners of these trucks need one of three things: a spare made from a key that still works, a full replacement because every key is gone, or a repair to a key they already have, such as a cracked shell, broken remote buttons or a dead remote battery. Programming is done through the OBD port, and no NASTF SDRM access is required for these years.

Mileage matters on these trucks. Worn ignition wafers and worn key blades are common on high-mileage Titans, and a new key cut by tracing a badly worn blade can carry that wear forward. On an older, well-used truck we check how the existing key and the ignition behave before deciding how to cut the new one. And a blade cut at a hardware store may turn the lock, but without a transponder chip it will not start the engine.

What does a 2016–2024 Titan owner need?

The redesign moved the Titan to a push-button Intelligent Key, a proximity fob, with a 4A (Hitag AES) chip. Dealer spec listings show this across trims, including the S and SV, and a 2019 Nissan technical service bulletin confirms the Intelligent Key on SV trims, with a KR5TXN-series 4A fob.

Our chip data is verified for 2016 through 2020. For 2016–2018 you may see a locksmith website claim these trucks use an ID47 chip. The catalog listings for the Murano, Pathfinder and Titan of 2015–2018 say 4A, and we weight the ID47 claim lower. Either way, we confirm against your truck rather than trust a web listing.

For 2021 through 2024, here is the honest picture. The 4A chip family is verified for the generation and carried across an unchanged run, but our catalog coverage stops at 2020, so those years are marked unverified in our data. We expect the same fob, and we confirm the exact setup by VIN before we order or program anything.

Every one of these fobs also carries a mechanical backup key, so a dead fob battery does not have to lock you out of the truck.

Spare key or all keys lost: what changes on a Titan?

For every model year in our data, a duplicate needs an original key to work from, and an all-keys-lost job is possible. For 2004 through 2020 neither is a dealer-only job on the data we have. The difference between the two is the number of steps, not whether it can be done.

A lost key is also a security question. If the missing key could be in the wrong hands, ask us what can be done on your truck's particular setup, and we will give you a straight answer.

  • 2004–2015 with a working key: we cut a new blade and program the ID46 chip at the OBD port. With no key at all, we work from the truck's ignition and lock to cut a blade, then program it.
  • 2016–2024 with a working fob: we pair a new fob alongside it. With none, we supply a matching fob and pair it through the OBD port, starting from nothing.
  • If you have one key left, make the spare now. It is the simpler job and usually the more economical route compared with waiting until the last key is gone.

Is Titan key programming OBD or dealer-only?

On the data we have, programming is done through the OBD port on every Titan year, from 2004 to 2024. For 2004 through 2020, no NASTF SDRM access is required. That is the industry registry some vehicles need before a locksmith can reach security data. So for those years, there is no dealer-only case that we know of.

For 2021 through 2024 that question is simply unanswered in our data. We will not tell you it is easy, or that it is dealer-only, without checking. We confirm by VIN. If your truck turned out to need something only the dealer can do, we would tell you before starting, not after.

One more programming trap: aftermarket fobs whose FCC ID and IC numbers do not match the original can fail to pair. A fob bought online is not a saving if it will not program, so check those numbers or ask us first.

What affects the cost of a Titan key replacement?

We do not put numbers on a web page, because the job decides the cost, not the badge on the tailgate. These are the real factors:

Call (213) 577-1366 with your year and whether the truck starts with a button or a key, and we will explain what your situation involves before any work begins.

  • Which era: a bladed ID46 key and a push-button Intelligent Key are different parts and different work.
  • Spare versus all keys lost: starting from zero takes more steps than adding a key to a working set.
  • How many keys you want made.
  • Condition of the truck: a worn blade or tired ignition on a high-mileage Titan can add work.
  • Fob match: a correctly matched fob versus an aftermarket one with the wrong FCC ID and IC numbers.
  • Repair versus replacement: a cracked shell or a dead battery may be the lighter-cost fix instead of a whole new key.
  • Where and when: coming to our storefront versus a van visiting you, and the hour of the call.

What goes wrong with Titan keys most often?

From our data, the problems split cleanly by era.

Before you pay for a new fob over a 'key not detected' message, try the backup: hold the fob to the start button. That works with a dead battery and gets you moving. Then replace the battery. If the message continues with a fresh battery, the fob or the truck needs a proper look. Water-damaged and crushed fobs often cannot be saved, and a replacement has to be paired to the truck.

  • 2004–2015: worn ignition wafers and key blades on high-mileage trucks; cracked key shells, broken remote buttons and dead remote batteries; and hardware-store copies without a transponder that will not start the engine.
  • 2016–2024: a dead fob battery that produces a 'key not detected' message; water-damaged or crushed fobs; and aftermarket fobs with mismatched FCC ID and IC numbers that fail to pair.

How we handle a Titan key job, step by step

The process is the same whether you are at home, at work or at our Westwood storefront.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, whether the truck has a key blade in the ignition or a push button, and how many working keys you have left.
  2. We confirm the setup. For 2004–2020 that is mostly a short conversation; for 2021–2024 we confirm by VIN.
  3. We make sure the truck is yours before making keys.
  4. We cut the blade or prepare the fob, matched to the chip family for your generation.
  5. We program it at the OBD port.
  6. We test everything: starting the truck, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and the backup key.
  7. We talk through a spare, because a second key made now is a simpler job than all-keys-lost later.

Should you call a locksmith or the Nissan dealer?

A dealer is a reasonable choice if the truck is already at their service department or you are not in a hurry. The trade-off is that with no key at all, the truck usually has to get to them, which is its own cost and delay. A mobile locksmith comes to the truck, or you can bring it to us.

Where a dealer may be the only route is a case our data cannot yet rule out: 2021–2024 trucks pending a VIN check. We would tell you that on the phone rather than send a van for nothing. For 2004–2020, our data shows OBD programming with no dealer-only requirement.

Whoever you choose, ask for their license. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and an honest locksmith will give you the number when asked.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Titan key if I have lost every key?

Yes. For every model year in our data, an all-keys-lost job is possible, whether it is the 2004–2015 bladed key or the 2016–2024 Intelligent Key. For 2021–2024 we confirm the exact setup by VIN first.

What chip does my Titan key have?

2004–2015 Titans use an ID46 (Philips Hitag-2) chip. 2016–2024 Titans use a 4A (Hitag AES) chip. The 2021–2024 years carry that chip family across from the generation, but our catalog coverage ends at 2020, so we confirm by VIN.

Does a push-button Titan still have a physical key?

Yes. Each Intelligent Key fob carries a mechanical backup key, so a dead fob battery does not have to keep you out of the truck.

My Titan says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?

Often it is just the battery. As a backup, hold the fob to the start button and start the truck, then replace the battery. If the message continues with a fresh battery, call us and we will check the fob and the truck.

Will a hardware-store copy start my 2004–2015 Titan?

Not without a transponder. A blade cut at a hardware store may turn the lock, but it will not start the engine because the truck does not recognize it. The ID46 chip has to be programmed to the truck.

Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?

Sometimes, but be careful. Aftermarket fobs whose FCC ID and IC numbers do not match the original can fail to pair. Send us the numbers before you buy and we will tell you whether it is likely to work.

Do you need my original key to make a duplicate?

Yes, in our data a duplicate needs an original key to work from. If you have none left, that becomes an all-keys-lost job, which we can handle on every Titan year in our data.

What does a Titan key cost?

We do not quote numbers online. The price depends on the era of your truck, whether you need a spare or all keys lost, how many keys, the condition of the blade and ignition, and whether the fob is correctly matched. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will explain it.

Do you come to me, or do I come to you?

Both work. We have mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (213) 577-1366.

We cover all these cities
