What do Lexus owners in Arleta usually need?
Arleta is mostly single-family 1950s ranch tracts with driveways and detached garages, and that shapes how Lexus owners here run into key trouble. Cars sleep at your own curb or in your own garage, not in a shared parking structure. So the usual call is a fob that went through the wash, a spare nobody can find, or a key that finally quit after years of daily use.
Trouble also follows people around the neighborhood: the commercial corner at Osborne Street and Woodman Avenue, the stretch near the I-5 / Osborne Street interchange, or a parking spot by Branford Park. A Lexus with a dead fob battery or a key locked inside does not care where it is parked, but being away from home makes it feel worse. The common requests look like this:
Whatever the situation, the first question is the same: which generation of Lexus key system is in the car? That decides what can be done at the curb and what cannot. If you are simply locked out with the key inside, start with our car lockout service in Arleta. For the wider picture, see car key replacement in Arleta.
- A smart fob with a dead battery, where the dash says 'key not detected'
- A lost fob, or one fob left and no spare
- A worn 2000s key that sticks in the ignition or will not turn the locks
- A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine
- A cracked fob shell, broken buttons, or a water-damaged board
How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?
We work from a storefront in Westwood plus mobile vans, and Arleta is about 18 miles from our base. A typical visit goes like this.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers around the clock. Give us the model, the year, whether the car has push-button start or a key you turn, and how many working keys you still have.
- We work out the key system from the year and, where needed, the VIN. We tell you plainly whether it is a curb job or one that may need the dealer.
- A technician drives to you, whether that is a driveway, a street, or a parking lot.
- We confirm you own the car. Expect to show ID and registration or title that match the vehicle.
- If the key has a blade, we cut it. Then we program the key or fob to the car, usually through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
- Before leaving we test everything: door locks, remote buttons, starting the engine, and the hidden emergency blade on smart fobs.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Lexus key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology, but it moved to smart keys earlier than most brands. Exact changeover years vary by model, so we confirm by year and VIN rather than guess from a general chart. Here is the rough progression.
In practical terms: older bladed keys are usually the simplest and the more economical to deal with. Smart keys from 2013 on are easy to add when you still have one that works. The newest cars are the hardest to start from scratch. Our Lexus key page has more model-level detail.
- Late 1990s to about 2005: fixed-code Texas 4C transponder keys with laser-cut blades, first a long style and then a short one.
- 2001–2009: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security key, on models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330/RX350.
- 2006 onward: first-generation push-button-start SmartAccess systems, arriving model by model — IS in 2006, ES and LS in 2007, RX and GX in 2010.
- 2010–2017: a newer generation of smart fob on the RX, GX and LS.
- 2013 onward: 128-bit smart keys, the 8A or DST-AES family.
- 2022 and newer: server-authenticated smart keys on the 2022+ NX, the 2023+ RX and the new GX550.
What happens if you have lost every Lexus key?
All keys lost is where the key generation matters most. Here is the honest picture by era, so you know what to expect before anyone drives out.
If your car falls into that last group, we will tell you on the phone or after a quick check, not after a wasted trip. More on this situation is on our lost car key replacement page for Arleta.
- 2000s bladed keys (4C and 4D-68): these program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, including when no key works at all.
- First-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006–2012: all keys lost historically meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code through the OBD port, but we confirm coverage for your exact vehicle first.
- 2013 and newer 8A-era cars: adding a key with one working is easy. With none, we use DST-AES emulator hardware.
- About 2020 onward: US all-keys-lost increasingly needs Toyota/Lexus server codes, which require locksmith-credentialed access (NASTF VSP) or tool-specific authorization.
- Newest platforms (2022+ NX, 2023+ RX, 2024+ GX550, 2026 ES): these use server-authenticated key registration. It is possible on many with specialist server-connected equipment, but coverage is still maturing and some jobs remain dealer-only.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Can a dead battery or worn key be fixed without replacing it?
Often, yes. A dead smart-fob battery makes the car report 'key not detected', but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door, and a fresh battery may be all you need. We check that before suggesting a new fob.
Worn or chipped laser-cut blades can stop turning the locks even though the chip inside still works. In that case a fresh blade may solve it without reprogramming. On high-mileage 2000s models, a key that sticks or stops turning in the ignition can point to worn wafers in the ignition lock rather than the key itself.
A hardware-store copy cut without a transponder will open the doors but never start the engine, because the chip is missing, not because the cut is wrong. Cracked shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards are their own repairs; see key fob replacement in Arleta.
How much does Lexus key replacement cost in Arleta?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. These are the things that move the cost:
- Key type. A bladed transponder key is a lighter-cost job than a smart fob, and lost-fob replacement runs well above ordinary bladed keys.
- Model year. Systems from about 2020, especially server-authenticated ones, cost more because of the access and equipment involved.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- Blade cutting. A laser-cut blade needs the right cutting equipment, and an emergency blade on a smart fob needs cutting too.
- Fob condition. Sometimes a battery or shell repair is all that is needed, which changes the picture entirely.
- Location and hour of the call.
- Dealer-only cases. If your car needs the dealer, their pricing applies, not ours.
Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Lexus?
A Lexus dealer is a legitimate choice and sometimes the only one. Some of the newest-platform jobs remain dealer-only, and dealers have factory access to server-authenticated key registration. If your car is one of those, we will say so.
Where we differ is that we come to you. A car with no working key cannot be driven to a dealer without a tow, while for 2000s bladed keys and many smart-key cars we can cut and program at your curb, which is often the more economical route. The car stays in your driveway.
If you want to compare, call both and give each the VIN. We would rather you get a straight answer than a hopeful one.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins. It is a reasonable question to put to anyone who is about to program your car.
- In business since 1987, with David as owner and lead technician overseeing the work.
- A real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile vans, not just a phone number.
- One company from the first call to the finished key, with no dispatch middleman reselling your job.
- Plain talk about dealer-only cases instead of promising what the car's system will not allow.
Lexus key service across Arleta and ZIP 91331
We cover all of Arleta, ZIP 91331: the Woodman Avenue corridor, the Osborne Street corridor, the Branford Street corridor, the Canterbury Avenue area, and the Terra Bella Street edge near Pacoima. Whether the Lexus is in a driveway beside a ranch-style house, parked near Arleta High School or Beachy Avenue Elementary, or by Branford Park, we come to it.
Northeast valley summers are hot, and the area is dry year-round with no coastal corrosion to blame. A worn key here is usually just age and use. If you also need house work, such as rekeying after buying a home along Woodman Avenue, replacing original postwar locksets, or a garage or side-gate lock, start at our Arleta locksmith page or contact us directly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Lexus key if I have lost every key?
Often, depending on the year. 2000s bladed keys and many 2013-and-newer smart keys can be handled with professional equipment. From about 2020, and especially the 2022+ NX, 2023+ RX, 2024+ GX550 and 2026 ES, it depends on server-connected access, and some jobs remain dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before heading out.
My Lexus says 'key not detected' but the door opens with the blade. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is the most common cause, so we check that first. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob board or its programming may be the problem, and we go from there.
Will you come to my driveway in Arleta?
Yes. Our service is mobile, so we work in driveways, on the street, or in a parking lot. Arleta is about 18 miles from our Westwood storefront, and the phone is answered around the clock at (213) 577-1366.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Lexus?
If it was cut without a transponder chip, it will open the doors but not start the engine. Programming needs a key with the right chip for your car's system, and we match that by year and VIN.
What do I need to show before you make a key?
ID plus registration or title that matches the vehicle. We make keys only for the person who can show they own the car.
Is a locksmith cheaper than the Lexus dealer?
We will not promise that for every car. For many bladed and smart-key Lexus models done at the curb, it is usually the more economical route, and you avoid towing. For dealer-only cases, the dealer is the answer and we tell you so.
My 2000s Lexus key sticks in the ignition. Is the key bad?
Maybe, maybe not. A worn blade can be recut, but on high-mileage cars the wafers in the ignition lock may be worn instead. We look at both before suggesting a fix.
Can I call at night or on a weekend?
Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Tell us the model and year on the call, and we will explain what can be done on site.
