What do Hyundai owners in Arcadia usually need?

Most Hyundai calls fall into a few groups: a lockout with the key sitting on the seat, a lost or broken key with no spare, a smart fob the car has stopped recognizing, or an ignition that no longer turns the way it should. Which one you have changes the job, and so does the trim level of your car, which matters more on a Hyundai than on almost any other make.

Where it happens matters too. Condo and townhome residents near downtown Arcadia and along Huntington Drive and Duarte Road often park in shared garages or on the street, and a lockout near the downtown A Line station tends to happen when someone is heading out or coming home with their hands full. Shoppers and workers around The Shops at Santa Anita leave cars in large lots for hours at a time. On race and event days the Santa Anita Park lots fill up, and a key locked inside a car out there is a situation we are asked to handle. In every one of those cases we come to the car, so you do not have to arrange a tow just to get a key made.

If your only problem is a locked door with a working key inside, our Arcadia car lockout service covers that. If a key is missing, worn out, or needs to be added, keep reading.

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

We run the job the same careful way whether you are in a driveway in the Rancho neighborhoods or in a parking structure near downtown. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 27 miles from Arcadia, and the Arcadia work is done by our mobile vans, which carry the cutting and programming equipment so the whole job happens where your car is parked.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers around the clock. We ask for the model, the year, the trim, whether the car has a turn key or a push-button start, and how many working keys you still have.
  2. We tell you what we can say from that conversation and what we will have to confirm in person, such as whether your car has an immobilizer chip and which fob part number it uses.
  3. The van comes to your location in Arcadia. We will ask you to show that the car is yours, normally with registration or title and a matching ID.
  4. We inspect the key or ignition and confirm the system: no chip, a transponder chip, or a smart-key system. That check decides everything that follows.
  5. We cut the blade, and where the car has an immobilizer we program the new key through the OBD-II port with professional tools.
  6. We test every function before we leave: starting the car, the door locks, and the remote buttons if your key has them.

What kind of Hyundai key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Hyundai's key history in the US does not follow a clean model-year line, so it helps to see the general sequence. When a chip is present, the systems moved roughly like this:

  • Late 1990s and early 2000s: some cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip.
  • Through the 2000s and early 2010s: Philips ID46 chips became the common standard.
  • Mid-to-late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip, listed as '8A,' on some models.
  • Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model: Elantra smart keys from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025.

Why do you confirm the chip by fob part number?

Parts sellers label the newest NXP chips inconsistently. Most models are listed as '4A,' while the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A' listings. If we trusted a website label, we could end up with a fob that looks right and never pairs. So we read the part number off your fob, or work from the VIN when you have no fob, and confirm from there. If your car sits in a spot where the data is unclear, we say so plainly instead of guessing.

Does your Hyundai even have an immobilizer chip?

This is the part that surprises people. A very large share of 2011 to 2022 base turn-key Hyundais shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list shows how broad that is: Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even the Palisade in 2020 and 2021. That gap is the root of the theft wave that hit these cars in 2021 through 2023. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

The practical result is simple but easy to get wrong:

  • On a no-immobilizer trim, any properly cut metal key starts the car. There is nothing to program.
  • On a chip-equipped trim, a hardware-store copy will open the door and turn in the ignition but will not start the engine.
  • Trim and build date decide which one you have, not the model year alone. Two Elantras from the same year can behave differently.

What if the ignition was damaged in a theft attempt?

Owners of those no-immobilizer cars often come to us needing more than a key. Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns get damaged in theft attempts, and a new key will not fix a cylinder that has been forced. We assess the cylinder, repair or replace it where that is the right answer, and cut keys to match. The free anti-theft software update Hyundai offers on the affected models is a Hyundai software job, not a lock job, so for that part we point you to Hyundai.

What happens if you have lost every Hyundai key?

It sounds worse than it usually is. On most 2006 to 2019 immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, our tools can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN, which makes add-a-key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith work with no dealer involved and no need to tow the car anywhere. We make a key, program it to the car, and test it, all at your curb or in your driveway.

If your car is a no-immobilizer trim, an all-keys-lost job is closer to a lock job: we produce a properly cut key for your ignition and doors, and the car starts with it. If you are in the middle of that situation now, our lost car key replacement in Arcadia page walks through what to have ready, and our broader Arcadia car key replacement page covers the other key situations.

What about the newest Hyundais with Hitag-AES smart keys?

Honest answer: it depends on the exact car. Aftermarket programming of the newest Hitag-AES '4A' generation, roughly 2023 and newer depending on the model, is documented. A 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost job, for example, has been done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and by model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service.

So we confirm coverage per job. We will tell you before any work begins whether we can do your specific car at the curb or whether the dealer is the right call. We would rather say that on the phone than after the van has arrived.

Dead fobs, worn keys and cheap copies

Not every key problem is a lost key. A few patterns come up again and again with Hyundais:

  • A dead smart-fob battery. The car says 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door. Often the fob is fine and only needs power. If the fob itself has failed, see our key fob replacement in Arcadia page.
  • Worn ignition and door-lock wafers on high-mileage cars, where a key turns roughly or sticks, and a fresh copy of a worn key makes it worse.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a week and then fail intermittently. We would rather source a fob that pairs properly than sell you one that causes a second call.

What affects the cost of Hyundai key replacement in Arcadia?

We do not quote numbers in a web article because the honest price depends on facts we do not have until we know your car. The main factors are:

  • Whether your car has an immobilizer at all. A no-immobilizer key is a cutting job, while a chip key also needs programming.
  • The key type: a basic metal key, a flip key, or a smart fob, each with very different parts costs.
  • Whether you have a working key already. Adding a spare is generally simpler than starting from all keys lost.
  • The model and build year, since the newest Hitag-AES cars may need more specialized tool coverage.
  • Whether the ignition cylinder or steering column also needs repair.
  • The time of day and the location, since a late-night call to a hillside driveway is a different trip than a daytime job downtown.

Dealer or locksmith: what is fair to say?

A Hyundai dealer can do this work, and for a few very new cars it may be the only route. If the dealer is where your car needs to go, we will say so. The difference for most Hyundais is logistics. With a dealer you generally need to get the car there, which after all keys are lost means a tow, and then work around their schedule. With a mobile locksmith, the work happens where the car is parked, and for immobilizer cars from roughly 2006 through 2019 it is routine. Many owners find that the usually more economical route is the mobile one, though we would not promise that for every car, and the newest models can change the answer.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company, not a call center passing your job to whoever is nearest. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, and the person who works on your car is part of the same operation as the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how the work is done.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith who arrives for their license details before work begins. That is a fair question for any company, and it is worth asking every time.

Hyundai key service across Arcadia neighborhoods

Arcadia's housing is varied, and the cars parked at it behave accordingly. In the 1930s to 1950s ranch homes of Lower Rancho, Upper Rancho and Santa Anita Village, cars often sit in driveways and on the street, and lost-key calls usually come from there. In Santa Anita Oaks and the Highlands, large two-story homes rebuilt from the 1990s onward often have multiple garages and side entries, and in the Arcadia Highlands hillside homes may have gates and long driveways, so tell us how to reach the car when you call.

Downtown Arcadia, around Huntington Drive and First Avenue, and the condos and townhomes nearby mean shared parking and garage levels. South Arcadia along Las Tunas Drive and the Baldwin Stocker area are served the same way. We cover ZIP codes 91006 and 91007, and we also work around places such as USC Arcadia Hospital, Arcadia High School and the Arboretum. Summers here are hot, and Santa Ana wind days are part of life in the foothills below the San Gabriel Mountains, so if you are stuck with a dead fob or a locked car in the sun, call and we will plan the visit around where you are.

If you want a broader look at what we do in town, see our Arcadia locksmith overview, our Hyundai key guide, or our general car key information. You can also reach us any time through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key if I have no spare?

Yes, in most cases. On immobilizer-equipped 2006 to 2019 Hyundais, our tools can usually read or calculate the PIN, so an all-keys-lost job is routine and done at your car. On the newest Hitag-AES cars we confirm coverage per job, and some may need the dealer.

Will a hardware-store copy work on my Hyundai?

It depends on the trim and build date. On a no-immobilizer trim, a plain metal copy starts the car. On a chip-equipped trim, the copy will turn in the lock but will not start the engine. We check which one you have before cutting anything.

Does my Hyundai need programming at all?

Not if it is a base no-immobilizer trim, which was common across 2011 to 2022 models. Any properly cut metal key starts those cars. Cars produced after November 1, 2021 always carry an immobilizer chip, so they do need programming.

Do you serve Arcadia at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Arcadia including the 91006 and 91007 ZIP codes.

Can you program a 2023 or newer Hyundai?

Sometimes. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented on the newest Hitag-AES generations, but tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm before starting work.

My car says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead battery in a smart fob is a common cause, and the emergency blade will often still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may need replacement or re-pairing, which we can check at your car.

My ignition was damaged in a theft attempt. Can you fix it?

We can assess and repair or replace the ignition lock cylinder and cut keys to match. Hyundai's free anti-theft software update for affected models is a separate software job through Hyundai, which we point you to rather than do ourselves.

What do I need to show you to get a key made?

Be ready to show that the car is yours, usually with registration or title and a matching ID. We will also want the VIN and, if you have it, your existing fob so we can confirm the part number.
