Why does a clean key copy matter more than people think?

A key copy looks like the simplest job a locksmith does, and in some ways it is. But a copy cut a few thousandths of an inch off will still slide into the lock, turn most of the time, and then one cold morning or one hot afternoon refuse to turn at all. In Valencia, the hot, dry Santa Clarita Valley summers and the big swings between day and night temperatures make doors and frames move with the seasons. A door that sits slightly differently in August than it did in February puts extra load on the bolt, and a sloppy key is the first thing to complain about it.

Most people call us for one of a few reasons. They just moved in and want spares. A family member needs a set. A contractor, house sitter or dog walker is coming. Or the one key they own is worn so smooth that it sticks and has to be jiggled. All of those are good reasons to cut a fresh spare while the original still works. Once a key is lost, or snaps off in the lock, you are in a more urgent and more expensive kind of day, and a spare in a drawer would have prevented it.

This page is about doing copies properly: the right blank, a clean cut, a real test. If what you actually need is a different fix, such as changing who has access to your door, we will say so rather than just cutting another key.

How do we duplicate a key, step by step?

Every copy follows the same basic path, whether it is a front-door key for a house in one of Valencia's villages or a single office key. The steps are short, but skipping any of them is how bad copies get made.

  1. We look at the key and, when we can, the lock it belongs to. We check the brand stamped on the head, the keyway shape, the length, and how worn the cuts are.
  2. We check whether the key is restricted or stamped Do Not Duplicate. If it is, we stop and talk to you about authorization before cutting anything.
  3. We choose the correct blank. It has to match the keyway and the brand profile, not just look close. A blank that is nearly right is the most common reason a new copy binds.
  4. We cut the copy on a machine clamped to the original, or, if the original is badly worn, we cut by the key's code or by fitting it to the lock so we are not copying the wear.
  5. We remove the burrs and clean the cut edges. Leftover metal shavings make a new key feel rough and can scratch the inside of your lock.
  6. We test the copy against the original and, wherever possible, in the actual lock. We also ask you to try it in your own door before you leave it with the household.

What kinds of keys can we copy for Valencia homes and businesses?

Most keys that come through the shop are ordinary, and ordinary keys are quick work. Some are not, and it helps to know the difference before you come in or call. Here is what we cut regularly:

  • House key copy and spare house key requests for front doors, back doors and garage entry doors.
  • Duplicate deadbolt key jobs, including keys for a deadbolt that is keyed separately from the knob.
  • Apartment key copy requests for tenants and managers, with the right authorization where a building controls its keys.
  • Office key duplication and commercial key duplication for suites, storerooms, file cabinets and back doors.
  • Mailbox key duplication for private mailboxes and HOA cluster boxes, where the lock is one we are allowed and able to copy.
  • High security key duplication and restricted key duplication, handled with an authorization check first.
  • Mobile key duplication, where a van comes to your address with the equipment to cut keys on site.

Can high-security and restricted keys be duplicated?

Sometimes, yes, and sometimes only with the right permission. High-security keys are made with more complicated cuts, such as angled, dimpled or side-milled profiles, and they need specific blanks and machinery. Not every key shop carries them, and a cut made on the wrong machine will not work reliably. We tell you up front whether we can cut yours, rather than taking it and hoping.

Restricted keys are a separate matter. The keyway is controlled by the manufacturer, and copies are meant to be authorized by whoever holds the key system, often a property owner, an HOA, or a business. If your key is restricted, we will ask for the authorization card, a letter from the system holder, or another reasonable proof that you are entitled to copies. That can feel like a hassle, but it is the entire point of a restricted system: nobody should be able to walk in and make a copy of a key to your building.

A Do Not Duplicate stamp on a key is a request, not a lock. We treat it seriously. If the stamp is on your own house key and you want spares, we will talk it through with you. If the key belongs to an employer or a property manager, we will ask them to approve.

If you want a key system where copies cannot be made casually, that is a different project. Our page on high-security locks in Valencia explains the options, and our master key system work covers offices and properties that need a controlled hierarchy of keys.

What affects the cost of key duplication in Valencia?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the key in your hand. Plain brass house keys are the lighter-cost end of the work. Cost goes up as the job gets more specialized. Here is what moves the price:

  • The key type. A standard house or deadbolt key is straightforward. High-security and restricted keys use costlier blanks and take more careful machine work.
  • Blank availability. Some blanks are common; others have to be sourced, and that takes time and adds cost.
  • How many copies you need. A handful of keys for one household is a different job than a full set for an office.
  • The condition of the original. A badly worn key may need to be cut by code or fitted to the lock, which takes more time than tracing a good key.
  • Authorization steps for restricted keys, which can mean extra paperwork or a call to the system holder.
  • Where the work happens. Bringing keys to our Westwood storefront is usually the more economical route. A van visit adds the cost of travel, and Valencia is about 34 miles from our base.
  • The hour. A copy needed in the middle of the night costs differently than one cut during regular daytime hours.

Can we come to you? Mobile key duplication in Valencia

We run mobile service vans as well as the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, so we can come to you when that makes sense. A van is the right call when you need several keys cut, when you are running a business and cannot leave the floor, when a property manager needs a full set matched to a lock on site, or when the key has to be fitted to the actual lock to work properly. Our mobile locksmith service in Valencia page describes how that works in more detail.

We will be straightforward about the other side of it. If you only need one ordinary house key copied and you happen to be passing through West Los Angeles, dropping it at the shop is usually the simpler and lower-cost way. Valencia sits about 34 miles from our base, and we would rather tell you that than send a van for a job that did not need one. Call (213) 577-1366 and describe the key. We will tell you which way is better for your situation.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for copies?

Key cutting is a trade skill, and the differences between a good shop and a careless one show up weeks later, when a key starts sticking. Here is what we stand on, and nothing more than that:

  • We have been in business since 1987. We have cut a great many keys on a great many kinds of locks.
  • We have a real storefront and mobile vans, so we can handle a quick copy at the counter and a full set at your door.
  • You deal with one company. No dispatch middleman hands your job to whoever is available, and the person who answers the phone works for the same company that shows up.
  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and he is the one who sets how we check blanks, restricted keys and test fits.
  • We answer the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366.

A note on licensing

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Whoever you hire for key work, especially for restricted keys or anything tied to a business, ask to see their license number and check it. It is a fair question and a good locksmith expects it.

What does key duplication look like across Valencia's villages?

Valencia began as a master-planned community in the mid-1960s, laid out by the Newhall Land and Farming Company in named villages connected by its paseo walkways. Much of the housing is HOA-governed single-family tracts built anywhere from the 1960s through the 2000s, with townhome and condo clusters near Town Center and newer homes in FivePoint Valencia to the west. That mix affects what people ask us to copy.

In older tracts, such as parts of Old Orchard and Valencia Hills, we often see original keys that have been copied several times over the years. A copy of a copy of a copy drifts further from the original cut each generation. If your key is that tired, bring it in and we will cut from the best version we can, or fit a fresh key to the lock itself. In villages like Bridgeport and Northpark, the common request is simple: an extra deadbolt key for a family member or a house sitter. In gated enclaves such as Westridge and the north edge of Tesoro del Valle, gate and community access devices are often controlled by the HOA, and those are separate from your house key.

Mailbox and cluster-box keys come up a lot in paseo-linked village HOAs. If your association uses cluster boxes, tell us what the box is and who controls it. Some of those locks we can copy, some need a lock change instead, and some are controlled by the postal service, in which case the post office handles them and we will say so plainly. If the lock itself needs replacing, see our mailbox lock replacement page.

Near Town Center, along the McBean Parkway corridor, apartments and condos mean a steady need for apartment key copy work. Tenants want a spare for a roommate, and managers want a matched set. If you are already locked out of one of those units, our apartment lockout service is the page you want. Students near CalArts have the same pattern: a spare for a roommate, a copy for a family member, and a lost key right before a deadline. Cutting a spare early is a lot easier than the alternative.

In the Valencia Industrial Center, commercial key duplication is more about control than convenience. Businesses there often want copies for staff on a master-key hierarchy, and those copies should be authorized by the person who owns the system. In FivePoint Valencia, newer homes often come with smart locks, and even then a physical backup key is worth copying so that a dead battery or a glitch does not leave you outside. Our smart lock installation page covers that side of it.

Whichever side of town you are on, in ZIP code 91354 or 91355, the process is the same: tell us the key, the lock and what you need, and we will tell you how we would handle it.

When is a copy not the right answer?

Sometimes cutting another key is the wrong move. If you have lost a key and do not know where it went, a copy for everyone else does not change the fact that someone else may be holding a working key to your door. In that case, rekeying your locks changes the pins inside so the old key stops working, and then we cut new keys that fit. It is often the more economical route compared with replacing hardware.

Car keys are also a different job. A car key with electronics inside is not an ordinary copy, and what is possible depends on the vehicle. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than guess, and if a particular key turns out to be dealer-only, we will say so honestly. Our car key replacement page explains how we handle those requests.

If you are not sure which one applies, call (213) 577-1366 and describe what you have. We would rather spend a few minutes sorting it out on the phone than cut a key you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

Can you copy a key that says Do Not Duplicate?

Sometimes. The stamp is a request from whoever issued the key, not a physical barrier. If it is your own house key and you own the property, we will talk through it with you. If the key belongs to an employer, a landlord or a property manager, we will ask for their approval first. For restricted keyways we need proof that you are authorized.

Do I need to bring the original key, or can you come to my Valencia address?

Either works. Bringing the key to our Westwood storefront is usually the simpler and more economical route for a single ordinary key. A van visit makes more sense for several keys, an office set, or any job where the key has to be fitted to the lock on site. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will help you choose.

My key is worn down. Will the copy work?

A copy can only be as good as the key it is cut from. If the original is badly worn, we may cut by the key's code or fit a new key to the lock itself, so we are not copying the wear. Tell us when you call so we can plan for it.

Can you copy a mailbox key for my HOA cluster box?

Often, yes, but it depends on the lock. Some cluster-box locks are ordinary and can be copied; others need a lock change, and some are controlled by the postal service, in which case the post office has to handle it. Bring the key or tell us the box type and we will give you a straight answer.

Can you duplicate a high-security key?

Many of them, yes. High-security keys need the right blanks and machinery, so we confirm whether we can cut yours before taking it on. If the key is restricted, we also check that you have authorization from whoever controls the key system.

Can you copy my car key?

Car keys are not an ordinary copy job. What can be done depends on the vehicle, so we confirm by VIN and in person rather than guess. If your key turns out to be dealer-only, we will tell you plainly instead of letting you spend time on a dead end.

I lost all my keys. Can you make a new one without an original?

Often, yes, depending on the lock. We can sometimes cut by code or fit a key to the lock directly. If the keys are lost, rekeying is usually worth considering as well, because it makes the lost keys useless. We will ask you to show that you have the right to access the property.

How much does key duplication cost?

It depends on the key type, the blank, how many copies you want, how worn the original is, whether authorization steps are needed, and whether you come to the shop or we come to you. Plain house keys are at the lighter-cost end. Call (213) 577-1366 with the key details and we will explain what applies.

Can I call at night for a key copy?

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For a copy that is not urgent, daytime service is usually the more economical route. For an emergency, call any time and we will tell you what we can do.
