What do Ford owners in Agua Dulce usually need?

Agua Dulce is almost entirely rural ranchettes and custom homes on multi-acre parcels, and that shapes how Ford key trouble shows up here. There are no apartment garages or shared parking structures. The truck or SUV sits in a gravel turnaround, beside a barn, at the end of a long driveway behind a gate, or at a trailhead. When a key goes missing or stops working, you are usually standing a good distance from the nearest shop, and often a good distance from your own front door.

The scenarios we hear about in a place like this tend to be practical ones. A key falls out of a pocket while you are working at the barn or in the paddock. A truck gets locked with the fob inside while you are carrying feed or tack. A visitor parks near Vasquez Rocks, walks the trail, and comes back to find the key is gone. A hardware-store copy opens the door and then the engine refuses to start. Or a high-mileage Ford has an ignition that has finally worn to the point where the key sticks.

Because the work happens where the vehicle is stranded, we built this service around the curb rather than the counter. If you want the wider picture of what we do for cars, the car key replacement page for Agua Dulce covers every make; this page is about Fords specifically.

How does mobile Ford key service work at the curb?

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 46 miles from Agua Dulce, and the vans carry the cutting and programming equipment so the job does not depend on that distance. You call, you describe the Ford, and we plan the visit around what the truck actually needs. A phone call at any hour reaches us at (213) 577-1366; we answer 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Here is how a typical visit goes.

  1. You tell us the model, the year and what happened: lost key, broken key, dead fob, or a key that opens the doors but will not start the car.
  2. We ask about the key you have left, if any, and whether the dash shows a flashing security light. That tells us which key type and which programming route to prepare for.
  3. We confirm the vehicle and your ownership at the vehicle. Expect to show ID and registration or another proof that the Ford is yours.
  4. We confirm the exact key type by VIN and in person, because Ford changeover years vary by model and we do not guess from the year alone.
  5. We cut the blade, or the emergency blade in a smart fob, and program the transponder or proximity fob to the vehicle's immobilizer.
  6. We test every key: lock, unlock, start, and any buttons, before we pack up. If you have a spare worth keeping alive, we can program it in the same visit.

What are the Ford key eras in plain terms?

Ford has changed its security system several times, and which era your vehicle falls in decides what the key is, how it gets programmed and what it takes to do it away from a dealer. This is the short version, and we confirm the details by VIN for your specific vehicle.

Ford's SecuriLock system, also called PATS, spread across the lineup from 1996 to 1999 with a fixed-code Texas 4C chip. Most models then moved to the Texas 4D63 crypto chip in the mid-2000s, a 40-bit design. An 80-bit version of that chip phased in around 2011 to 2013 depending on the model, with the Expedition often listed as holding out until its 2015 refresh. Bladed keys on newer platforms use a 128-bit NXP Hitag Pro chip from roughly 2013 to 2015 on; that is confirmed on the 2015 to 2020 F-150 and the 2019 and newer Ranger. Push-button-start proximity fobs spread trim by trim through the 2010s and are standard on most 2018 and later redesigns.

  • Outlier: the US Focus used a Texas 4D60 chip in 2000 to 2004.
  • Outlier: the 2013 to 2019 Escape kept 80-bit bladed keys and never made the 128-bit move.
  • Outlier: Ranger lagged the rest of the lineup. Most trucks before 1999 have no transponder at all, and neither do 2.5L four-cylinders through 2001. After that, they use 4C and 4D63-family keys like other Fords.
  • Because the exact changeover year differs by model, we verify by VIN instead of relying on a general rule.

What if you have lost every Ford key?

All keys lost sounds like the worst case, but on many Fords it is a routine job. On most 2000s and 2010s models, we program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. PATS includes a timed security-access wait during that process, so the visit is not instant even when everything goes smoothly. On bladed-key models, all-keys-lost by OBD is routine.

Newer fob-style Fords are less simple. On roughly 2016 and newer proximity-fob models, an all-keys-lost job can need an active-alarm bypass adapter alongside the programmer. Vendor kits list coverage for 2016 to 2020, and we check coverage for your exact vehicle before committing to the job.

The newest Fords, roughly 2021 and newer, are the honest exception. Ford's FDRS and FJDS software route requires NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, for PATS functions through non-dealer logins. Aftermarket tool coverage varies. If your vehicle falls in that group and the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only, we tell you that on the phone rather than send a van for nothing.

If you are in the middle of it right now, our lost car key replacement service in Agua Dulce page explains what to gather before we arrive.

What affects the cost of a Ford key in Agua Dulce?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real figure depends on facts we only learn from the vehicle. What we can do is tell you plainly what moves the cost up or down, so a quote over the phone makes sense when you hear it.

If you want the lighter-cost route, the biggest lever is usually the key type itself. A basic transponder blade is a different job from a proximity fob.

  • Key type: fixed-code chip, crypto chip, 128-bit bladed key or smart fob. Hardware and programming effort differ for each.
  • All keys lost or a spare available. Cloning or adding a key when a working one exists is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
  • Model and year. Outliers like the Escape or older Ranger can change what is needed, and newer models may require extra adapters or credentials.
  • Number of keys. Programming a second key during the same visit is often more efficient than coming back later.
  • Shell and button condition. A cracked remote-head shell or worn buttons can sometimes be fixed by moving the electronics into a new shell instead of replacing the whole unit.
  • Time and distance. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our base, and after-hours service is a factor like anywhere else.
  • Equipment needs. Some models call for specialized adapters or access tools on top of the programmer.

Dealer or locksmith for a Ford key?

Both are legitimate options, and which one is better depends on the vehicle. A Ford dealer can always work through Ford's own systems, which matters on the newest models. For many 2000s and 2010s Fords, a locksmith can do the same job with professional programming equipment, and the vehicle does not need to be towed anywhere. On a ranchette property or at a remote trailhead, that difference counts. Towing a Ford with no working key is a separate expense and a long way from Agua Dulce.

Where we are honest is on the newest models. If your Ford is in the roughly 2021 and newer range and the job needs PATS functions through Ford's software, it may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We will say so and point you the right way, not take a deposit and hope.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call, us included, for the license details, and check them yourself. A reputable company will not hesitate.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Ford?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Agua Dulce is one of them. What that means in practice is a few simple things.

You get one company, start to finish. We do not pass your call to a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is nearby. The storefront in Westwood and the mobile vans work together, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If a Ford job is complicated, such as an all-keys-lost on a fob model, it is not left to guesswork.

Phones are answered around the clock, so a stuck truck at midnight gets a person, not a voicemail. If you want to reach us through the site instead, the contact page has the options, and the main Wilshire Lock & Key site shows everything else we handle.

Ford key service around Agua Dulce

Agua Dulce covers a wide area, and ZIP 91390 takes in very different parts of it. We work in all of them. Along the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center and the junction with Sierra Highway, the calls often come from vehicles parked at businesses or the winery. On the Sierra Highway corridor, new owners of horse properties often want rekeying, and while we are there they sometimes ask about spare Ford keys for the farm truck. Out on Darling Road and in Sleepy Valley, long driveways and gates mean the Ford may be a long walk from the road, so tell us where the gate code or access point is when you call.

Near Vasquez Rocks, the issue is usually a locked or lost-key vehicle at a custom home or trailhead. Toward Mint Canyon, in the southwest part of the area near Canyon Country, we serve the same way. Around the Agua Dulce Airpark, we also work on hangar and outbuilding locks, so one visit can sometimes cover a vehicle and a lock.

The climate matters too. This is high desert at about 2,500 feet, with hot dry summers, cold winter nights and frequent wind. Temperature swings shift door frames through the year, and dust works into exterior gate locks and padlocks. That is mostly a lock story rather than a key-chip story, but a stiff gate lock and a worn key blade are often found together. Ask us about both when we are on site. For lockouts specifically, see our car lockout service in Agua Dulce, and for the broader area, the Agua Dulce locksmith overview.

What Ford key problems do we see most?

Across Ford models, the same handful of problems come up again and again. Knowing them can save you a wasted trip or a second visit.

  • Worn ignition lock wafers. Keys stick or stop turning on high-mileage vehicles, and sometimes the lock needs attention, not just a new key.
  • Worn 8-cut key blades that no longer lift the wafers cleanly.
  • A flashing PATS theft light. The engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder. They open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries that bring up a 'No key detected' message.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently, which can be more frustrating than a key that simply does not work.
  • If your issue is the fob side, our key fob replacement in Agua Dulce page goes deeper. For general background, see car keys and the Ford key guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you come to my ranch or gated property in Agua Dulce?

Yes. Our vans are mobile, and we work at driveways, barns, gates and roadside spots. Tell us how to reach the vehicle, including any gate code or access point, so the visit goes smoothly.

My Ford starts the engine with the copy but the PATS light flashes. What is wrong?

A flashing PATS theft light with a cranking engine usually means the chip is not being read. Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder behave this way. We can program a proper transponder key or fob to the vehicle.

Do you handle all keys lost on a Ford?

Often, yes. On most 2000s and 2010s Fords, all-keys-lost by OBD is routine, especially on bladed-key models. Newer proximity-fob models can need extra equipment, and the newest ones, roughly 2021 and later, may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We say which on the phone.

Can I program a spare Ford key myself?

Many bladed-key Fords support owner onboard programming of an extra key when two working programmed keys are available. Trim and model-year exceptions exist, so we verify per generation. If you only have one key or none, you will need professional programming.

How do I know which Ford key I need?

The model year helps, but changeover years vary by model. A 2013 to 2019 Escape, for example, kept 80-bit bladed keys, while a 2015 to 2020 F-150 uses the 128-bit chip. We confirm by VIN and in person before cutting or programming.

My smart fob says 'No key detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob may be damaged or no longer programmed, and we can test it and tell you what makes sense.

Will you ask for proof that the Ford is mine?

Yes. We confirm ownership at the vehicle with ID and registration or similar proof before making a key. That protects you, and it is how a responsible locksmith works.

Is your company licensed?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. Call (213) 577-1366 with questions about our paperwork and we will talk it through.

What hours can I call about a Ford key in Agua Dulce?

The phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. A lost key at night or on a holiday gets the same attention as one on a weekday.
