What do BMW owners in Agoura Hills usually need help with?
The BMW calls we get from Agoura Hills fall into a handful of situations: a spare key that never got made, a fob that has quit, a dash message saying the key isn't detected, or a key that has simply vanished. The make matters a great deal here, because BMW has changed its key system several times. What we can do at the curb depends on which generation your car belongs to.
Where it happens locally is fairly predictable. Agoura Hills has townhomes and condos near Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard, and a car in a shared lot or on a street is easy to walk away from with the key inside or with a fob that has stopped working. Whizin Market Square draws errands and dinners, and a fob that fails while you're parked there leaves you stranded far from your spare. In Old Agoura, with its larger lots and older rural homes, the car is often parked a long way from the house, so a missing key can mean a long search across the property. The summers here are hot and dry, and small batteries and plastic key shells do not enjoy a hot dashboard.
These are the problems we see most often on BMWs:
- Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s cars. The remote stops working, but the chip inside can still start the car.
- Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on older slot-key models, which often get blamed on the key when the key is fine.
- Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
- Dead coin cells in newer smart fobs, which show up as 'key not detected' even though the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges on the E83 X3, and worn buttons.
- Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that people blame on the key.
- Lost-key jobs on newer cars, where the news that the dealer is the only route comes as a shock.
How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?
You don't need to tow the car anywhere. Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, and the work happens where the car is parked. Here is how a typical call goes.
- Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the model, the year, the body code if you know it (E90, F30, G11 and so on), how many working keys you have, and whether the car starts.
- We work out which key system the car uses. Some years sit on the boundary between two systems, so where the picture is unclear we confirm by VIN and at the car instead of guessing over the phone.
- Before a van drives out, we tell you plainly whether your car is something we can do at the curb or something only the dealer can do. If it's dealer-only, we'd rather say so on the phone than have you wait for a van that can't help.
- At the car, we ask you to show the car is yours. Locksmiths who skip that step are not doing you a favor.
- We cut the blade, connect to the car, and originate or program the key using the method that fits your car's generation.
- We test everything before we leave: starting the engine, remote lock and unlock, the door handles, and the spare. If you handed us two keys, both get tested.

Call (213) 577-1366Which BMW key era is your car?
BMW key systems fall into clear generations. Here is the plain-language version, from older to newer.
The EWS era runs through the mid-2000s, and up to 2010 on the E83 X3. These cars use an immobilizer with an ID44 chip in a remote-head 'diamond' key, the one with the blade that folds out.
The CAS era starts with the 2002 E65 7-series and spreads through the 2004 E60 5-series, the 2006 E90 3-series, the 2007 E70 X5, and the 2013 to 2015 E84 X1. These cars use an ID46 fob that slides into a slot in the dash, and a Start button. The control module comes in several generations, called CAS1 through CAS3+.
The F-chassis cars (F01 7-series from 2009, F10 5-series from 2011, F25 X3 from 2011, F30 3-series from 2012, F15 X5 from 2014, and F48 X1 from 2016) moved to true keyless smart fobs on an ID49 chip. Inside those cars there is a split. The F01, F10, and F25 use CAS4 or CAS4+ modules, while the F30, F15, and F48 use FEM or BDC body modules.
The G-chassis cars start with the 2016 G11 7-series and use a BDC2 body controller with a 434 MHz fob. The newest generations are the G70 7-series (2023), U11 X1 (2023), G60 5-series (2024), and G45 X3 (2025). They add Digital Key architecture, and there is no established aftermarket path for those yet.
If you aren't sure where your car falls, don't worry. Give us the year and model, or read us the VIN, and we'll place it. Our general BMW key page covers the whole brand, and this page is specific to Agoura Hills.
- EWS and ID44: older diamond-style remote-head keys, through the mid-2000s.
- CAS and ID46: dash-slot fobs with a Start button, roughly 2002 to 2015 depending on the model.
- F-chassis and ID49: keyless smart fobs, roughly 2009 to 2022 depending on the model.
- G-chassis and BDC2: 2016 onward, with the newest cars on Digital Key architecture.
What can actually be done at the curb, era by era?
This is where honesty matters most, because the answer changes sharply with the age of the car.
EWS cars, through about 2006, and the X3 through 2010, are routine specialist work for us. Keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench, and that includes all-keys-lost situations.
CAS1 through CAS3+ cars, roughly 2002 to 2015 depending on the model, have documented procedures for adding a key through the OBD port and for all-keys-lost. One wrinkle: late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade before a key can be added.
CAS4, CAS4+, FEM, and BDC cars, the F-chassis from 2009 to 2022 depending on the model, are advanced specialist jobs. Some tools work through the OBD port, and others need the module on the bench. It is possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment, and it takes longer than a simple fob job.
G-chassis BDC2 cars, 2016 onward, can have a key added if you still have a working key. That is specialist-possible. Without a working key, the story changes, and that is covered in the next section.
The newest generations, the G70, U11, G60, and G45, are dealer-only for key work, period. We won't pretend otherwise.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you've lost every BMW key?
All keys lost is the call people dread, and on a BMW the answer depends almost entirely on the year.
On EWS cars and on the CAS1 through CAS3+ generations, we can handle all-keys-lost at the car. It takes more time than adding a spare, but it is a normal job for a specialist with the right equipment.
On F-chassis cars with CAS4 or FEM/BDC modules, all-keys-lost is possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment, and some cars need module work on the bench. We'll tell you what your specific car needs before committing to anything.
On G-chassis cars, from 2016 onward, all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only. There is one advertised aftermarket route, and we don't use it, because it locks the car against future dealer-programmed keys. That could leave you worse off than before. So we won't promise all-keys-lost on a G-series BMW. For the newest cars, the G70, U11, G60, and G45, the dealer is the only path.
If you're in that situation, we can still help you sort out what to do next. BMW doesn't use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, and dealer paths require proof of ownership, so have your registration and ID ready. Our lost car key replacement page walks through the general process for any make.
What affects the cost of a BMW key in Agoura Hills?
We don't quote prices on a web page, because BMW key work varies too widely for a single figure to mean anything. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so a quote makes sense when you get one.
The biggest factor is the key system, which follows the car's generation. An older diamond key is a different job from a smart fob on an F-chassis car, and the equipment and time behind them are very different.
Next is whether you have a working key. Adding a spare while you hold one is a lighter job than all-keys-lost, which can involve reading module data or pulling a module for bench work.
The type of key itself matters too. A replacement shell or battery is a smaller job than a whole new fob. Some cracked or worn keys can be repaired by swapping the shell, which is usually the more economical route when the electronics inside are still good.
Other factors are late-night or weekend service, because the van is out of the shop and rolling at an odd hour, and how far out the car is parked, since we serve a wide area and Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from our Westwood storefront.
When you call, we'll ask the questions that matter and explain the quote in terms of those factors. If the car is dealer-only, we'll say so rather than quote a job we can't do.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is fairer for a BMW?
Neither is right for every car, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
For the newest BMWs, the G70, U11, G60, and G45, the dealer is the only option for key work. We'll tell you that directly. For G-chassis cars when every key is gone, the dealer is effectively the route as well.
For a very large share of other BMWs, a specialist locksmith can do the work, and the main advantage is convenience. A van that comes to your driveway or parking lot saves a tow and a trip, and we're reachable around the clock, which dealer service departments are not.
A reasonable rule of thumb: if your BMW is a 2015 or older model with a CAS or EWS system, mobile service is likely the better fit. If it's an F-chassis car, call us and we'll tell you what your specific car needs. If it's a brand-new model, start with the dealer. Whatever you decide, we'd rather you made a good choice than call us for a job we can't do.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a BMW?
We've been in business since 1987, and we run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood alongside our mobile vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch center that hands the job to whoever is closest. One company handles the call, the work, and any follow-up.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. On BMWs, that matters, because the difference between a good job and a bad one is often a judgment call made before anyone touches the car: which system is this, what's the right method, and is this one we shouldn't touch.
One practical note. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you hire for it. That goes for us and for anyone else.
What should Agoura Hills BMW owners know about local conditions?
Agoura Hills uses ZIP code 91301, and our vans cover the whole city. A few places come up often in the work we do around here.
In Morrison Ranch and Lake Lindero, many homes operate under HOAs, and the driveway is where most BMW key work happens. We can do the work right there, so the car doesn't need to go anywhere. In Old Agoura, larger equestrian lots mean the car may sit well away from the house, so tell us exactly where it's parked when you call. We also do work in Liberty Canyon, Fountainwood, Forest Cove, Hillrise, and Annandale.
Most of the housing here dates from the 1960s to the 1980s, and that has a small side effect on car keys. If you lock yourself out of the house and the spare is in the car, or the other way around, you may be dealing with both at once. We handle home locks too, and our Agoura Hills locksmith page gives the overview. Because the area sits in a wildland-urban interface with meaningful wildfire exposure, it is worth keeping a working spare BMW key somewhere safe and easy to grab if you ever have to leave in a hurry.
Along the Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Kanan Road corridors, we also handle business owners' cars and storefront locks. And if you're locked out of the car itself, our car lockout service covers that.

Call (213) 577-1366What to check before you call
A few quick checks can save time, and sometimes the whole call.
If your newer BMW says the key isn't detected, the coin cell in the fob may simply be dead. The emergency blade still opens the door, and many cars will start if the fob is held in the right spot. If the remote on an older BMW has stopped working but the car still starts, the key's battery may be the culprit, and that's often a smaller job than a whole replacement.
If the car won't start and you've ruled out the key, the steering lock on older slot-key cars can be the real problem. We'll tell you if that's what we find rather than program a key that won't fix anything.
If you need a new fob or a spare, our key fob replacement page has more detail, and the overview at car key replacement in Agoura Hills covers other makes. For a general look at what's involved with any brand, see our car keys guide. And if you'd rather write than call, use the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a BMW key in Agoura Hills without the dealer?
For many BMWs, yes. EWS cars, CAS cars, and most F-chassis cars can be handled by a specialist with the right equipment. The newest generations (G70, U11, G60, G45) are dealer-only, and G-chassis cars with all keys lost are effectively dealer territory too.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car?
We come to you. Our mobile vans work at your driveway, parking lot, or curb anywhere in Agoura Hills. You can reach us at (213) 577-1366 any hour of the day or night.
My BMW says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On F and G-chassis cars, a dead coin cell in the smart fob is a common cause, and the emergency blade will usually still open the door. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, call us and we'll sort out whether it's the fob or something else, such as a door-handle sensor.
Can you replace a BMW key if I've lost all of them?
It depends on the year. On EWS and CAS cars, yes. On F-chassis cars it is possible with dedicated BMW equipment. On G-chassis cars from 2016 onward it is effectively dealer-only, and we don't use the one aftermarket route because it locks the car against future dealer keys. The newest models are dealer-only.
Why can't you give me a price on the phone?
BMW key work depends on the car's key system, whether you have a working key, the type of key, the time of day, and the distance. We explain those factors and give you a clear quote once we know your car. We don't post numbers because they'd be misleading.
Is my BMW's remote dead, or is the key itself broken?
On 2000s EWS and slot-key cars, a dead rechargeable battery in the key kills the remote while the chip still starts the car. That is often a smaller fix than a new key. Cracked shells, broken flip hinges, and worn buttons can also be repaired in many cases.
Will you need proof that the car is mine?
Yes. We'll ask you to show that the car belongs to you. Dealer paths for BMW also require proof of ownership, so keep your registration and ID handy.
Do you only work on BMWs in Agoura Hills?
No. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and we work on many makes. Our broader car keys section covers the other brands, and Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from our Westwood storefront.
