What do BMW owners in Acton usually need?
Most BMW key calls come down to a dead battery, a worn or broken key, a lost key, or a lockout. In Acton the setting matters as much as the key. Homes sit on large parcels with long, often gated driveways, and a lot of daily driving starts and ends at a barn, a gate or a back pasture instead of a mall lot. If a key dies at the far end of a driveway, nobody is going to carry the car to a shop for you.
Commuters are the other group. The Vincent Grade/Acton Metrolink park-and-ride means a BMW can sit all day while its owner is on a train, and a key that fails or goes missing by evening becomes a stranded-car problem. Lockouts along Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway are the same story with fewer people around. If you only need the door opened, our Acton car lockout service is the shorter path.
These are the problems we see most often on BMWs:
- Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote dies, but the chip can still start the car.
- Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, which get misdiagnosed as key problems.
- Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
- Dead smart-fob coin cells on F and G-chassis cars: 'key not detected' on the dash while the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges (E83) and worn buttons.
- Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that get blamed on the key.
- Sticker shock on lost-key jobs for G-chassis cars, where all-keys-lost is dealer territory.
How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?
We come to the car, whether that's a driveway off Crown Valley Road, a pull-off on Sierra Highway or a space at the park-and-ride. Acton is about 52 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, so we won't pretend we're around the corner. We'll give you a realistic window when you call, and the phone is answered around the clock.
Here is how a typical job runs:
- You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us the model, the year, whether any working key exists, and exactly where the car is.
- We pin down the key system from the model, year and VIN. Chassis and year usually point to the right module, but not always, so we confirm instead of guessing.
- Before a van heads out, we tell you plainly whether the job is curb work, bench module work, or dealer-only. You shouldn't pay for a drive that can't end in a key.
- On arrival we ask you to show the car is yours, which any honest locksmith will do, and then we do the work: cutting, programming, or both.
- We test everything before we leave: the remote functions, the emergency blade, and starting the car with each key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which BMW key generation do you have?
BMW key systems fall into clear eras, and the era decides what's possible. Model years below are a guide, not a promise. We confirm by VIN or in person.
Each era in plain terms:
- EWS era (through the mid-2000s, and to 2010 on the E83 X3): an ID44 remote-head 'diamond' key. This is routine specialist work, because keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench.
- CAS era (from the 2002 E65 7-series, then the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5 and 2013-2015 E84 X1): an ID46 fob that inserts into a dash slot, with a Start button. Module generations run from CAS1 through CAS3+.
- F-chassis (F01 7-series 2009, F10 5-series 2011, F25 X3 2011, F30 3-series 2012, F15 X5 2014, F48 X1 2016): true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 chip. The F01, F10 and F25 use CAS4/CAS4+ modules, while the F30, F15 and F48 use FEM/BDC body modules.
- G-chassis (2016 G11 7-series onward): a BDC2 body controller with a 434 MHz fob.
- Newest generations (G70 7-series 2023, U11 X1 2023, G60 5-series 2024, G45 X3 2025): Digital Key architecture with no established aftermarket path yet.
What can we actually program on each era?
EWS cars are routine for a specialist. CAS1 through CAS3+ cars have documented add-a-key procedures over the OBD port, though late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade first. F-chassis cars with CAS4/CAS4+ or FEM/BDC modules are advanced specialist jobs. Some tools work through OBD, while others need bench module work. It's possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment, and we won't tell you otherwise.
On G-chassis cars, adding a key is specialist-possible when you still have a working key. The newest generations, G70, U11, G60 and G45, are dealer-only for key work.
What if you've lost every BMW key?
All-keys-lost is where the era matters most. On EWS cars it's part of the routine bench work. On CAS1 through CAS3+ cars there are documented procedures. On F-chassis cars it's advanced work that depends on the module and the equipment.
G-chassis BDC2 cars (2016 onward) are different. All-keys-lost there is effectively dealer-only. One aftermarket route is advertised, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We don't use it, and we won't promise G-series all-keys-lost. We'd rather tell you that on the phone than after you've paid for a drive.
BMW also doesn't use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, and the dealer path requires proof of ownership. Have the registration and your ID ready. If you still have one working key, make a spare now. Adding a key is simpler and lighter in cost than starting from nothing, and out here a second key stops being a convenience once your first one fails at a gate. See our lost car key replacement page for how that process works across makes.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a BMW key in Acton?
We don't quote numbers in an article, because the honest answer depends on the car. These are the real drivers:
- The key era. EWS bench work, CAS programming, F-chassis module work and dealer-only jobs are very different levels of effort.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key is usually the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost.
- The module generation, including whether late CAS3+ firmware needs a flash downgrade.
- The type of key: a simple remote-head key, a slot fob or a smart fob with a different shell and electronics.
- Whether the problem is the key at all. A coin cell, an ELV fault or a Comfort Access sensor may be the real cause, and a new key won't fix those.
- Where the car is. Acton is a long run from our storefront, and a car behind a gate or down a long drive may need extra time.
- The hour. We answer 24/7, and after-hours work is part of what that means.
Dealer or locksmith: how do you choose?
The choice is fairer than most locksmith pages admit. For a G70, U11, G60 or G45, the dealer is the only route, and for a G-series all-keys-lost it's effectively the only safe one. If you're in either spot, we'll say so and point you there. The dealer will need proof of ownership.
For many older cars, a specialist can do the job where the car sits. That covers EWS and CAS cars, F-chassis cars with the right equipment, and add-a-key on G-chassis cars when you hold a working key. The upside is that you don't tow a car out of Acton or arrange a ride to a dealership. A call to compare options costs nothing. For the broader picture, see our BMW car key guide and the general car key replacement overview.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We've been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans on the road. You're talking to one company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the call to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, so what we tell you on the phone is what the technician is expected to do.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that number, including us, and don't hire anyone who dodges the question. For model-by-model detail, start with our Acton car key replacement hub, or contact us directly.
Serving BMW owners across Acton and ZIP 93510
Acton is unincorporated Los Angeles County, ZIP 93510, at roughly 2,700 feet. Summer highs run over 100°F, winter nights drop below freezing, and the wind is strong. That's hard on exposed gate hardware and padlocks, and a failing key battery is the last thing you want to find out about at a barn door in the dark.
We cover the Crown Valley Road corridor, including the town center and its horse properties; the Soledad Canyon corridor; the Aliso Canyon Road and Escondido Canyon areas; the Sierra Highway corridor; and the area near Vincent toward Palmdale. We also meet commuters at the Vincent Grade/Acton Metrolink park-and-ride. Housing here is mostly ranch-style homes, custom builds and manufactured homes on big parcels, so a lot of our work starts at a gate. If you're after a fob only, see key fob replacement in Acton, or visit the Acton service page for everything else.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a BMW key if I've lost every key?
It depends on the era. EWS and CAS cars are workable, and F-chassis cars are possible with dedicated BMW equipment. G-chassis all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only, and we won't promise it. The newest generations are dealer-only outright.
My BMW says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Often not. On F and G-chassis cars a dead coin cell in the smart fob is a common cause, especially when the emergency blade still opens the door. A Comfort Access handle sensor fault can also be blamed on the key. We check before replacing anything.
Can you do a G70, U11, G60 or G45?
No. The G70 7-series, U11 X1, G60 5-series and G45 X3 use Digital Key architecture with no established aftermarket path. Key work on those is dealer-only, and we'll say so instead of taking your call for a job we can't finish.
Does a steering-lock problem mean my key is bad?
Not necessarily. Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars get misdiagnosed as key problems all the time. If the key is fine, a new one won't help, so we diagnose first and tell you what's actually failing.
How do I know which key system my BMW uses?
Start with the model and year: EWS through the mid-2000s, CAS from 2002 into the mid-2010s, F-chassis from 2009, G-chassis from 2016. Years overlap by model, so we confirm by VIN or in person before quoting a plan.
Is it worth making a spare BMW key now?
Yes, if you still have a working one. Adding a key is simpler than all-keys-lost, and on G-chassis cars it's specialist-possible only when you hold a working key. After a loss, that car becomes a dealer matter.
Do you answer calls at night for Acton?
Yes. The line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Arrival depends on where our vans are and the distance to Acton, and we'll tell you honestly what to expect when you call.
