What do Kia owners in Woodland Hills usually need?
Most Kia calls fall into a few groups: a lost key, a key that no longer turns, a flip key with a broken hinge or cracked shell, a smart fob that suddenly reports 'key not detected,' and a car that thieves have been at. Which group you are in matters, because a turn-key Kia from the early 2010s and a newer push-button Kia are very different jobs.
Woodland Hills gives these problems a local shape. In Warner Center, with its condo towers, large apartment complexes and HOA-managed buildings on controlled-entry systems, a lost fob often means sorting out a gate or entry system before anyone can even reach the car. Along the Ventura Boulevard corridor, people find the key missing at the end of a workday. Around The Village at Westfield Topanga, it is keys locked in the car or a fob battery that gave out mid-errand. Near Pierce College, apartment residents run into the same lost-key story.
If your key is simply locked inside the car, that is a different and usually quicker job; see our Woodland Hills car lockout service. If the key is gone or damaged, here is what we see most often on Kias:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, so the key sticks or will not turn.
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn-out buttons.
- Dead smart-fob batteries. The car says 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
- Hardware-store copies, which start some Kias fine and will not start others without programming.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently.
- Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars: broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 18 miles from Woodland Hills, and our mobile vans carry the cutting and programming equipment to your car. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and a person answers. You can also send details through our contact page, but for a car you cannot drive, the phone is faster.
- Call and tell us the year, model and trim, and whether the Kia starts with a turn key or a push button. The VIN, visible at the base of the windshield, helps us confirm details.
- We work out what the car needs: whether it has an immobilizer, what kind of key it uses, and whether anything about it is a dealer-only case. If it is, we say so before anyone drives out.
- We confirm you are the owner or authorized driver, using your ID and the car's registration or title.
- We cut the new key to fit the car's locks.
- If the car has an immobilizer or a remote, we program through the OBD-II port with professional tools.
- We test everything before we leave: starting the engine, locking and unlocking, every remote button and the emergency blade.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia key era is yours?
Kia's US key history falls into three arcs, and which one your car sits in decides most of the job. Here it is in plain terms. Our Kia key guide covers the brand more broadly.
One caution before the list: the exact changeover years are verified per model year and VIN, not from a general summary. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than guessing from what year your Kia was built.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. That means Texas 4D-60 on some 2001-2006 models, then Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
- Roughly 2011-2021, and some 2022, with a turn-key ignition: most of these have no immobilizer at all, as documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts them.
- Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. They moved from ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s to Hitag 3 / ID47 around 2016-2020, then to NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems on 2019-and-newer platforms such as Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.
- 2022 onward: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, though at least one published 2023 spec sheet (Sportage LX) still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent.
How are Kia keys actually programmed?
A Kia from the no-immobilizer era needs no transponder programming. A mechanically cut key starts it, and only the keyless-entry remote, where fitted, needs OBD programming.
Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, obtained from the VIN, through a dealer/KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current pro tools for adding a key and for most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job.
One more point, since it comes up: Kia's anti-theft software update, released after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.
What if you have lost every key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On a no-immobilizer Kia, we cut a working key and, if you want a remote, program it over OBD. On an immobilizer Kia, we generally can create a key from scratch with professional tools, though some cars need a PIN pulled first, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job.
We will not promise what we cannot verify. If your car turns out to be one where the tools or server access do not cover it, we say so on the phone rather than after we have driven out, and that may mean the dealer is your answer.
If the car was a theft target and the ignition is damaged, a new key alone will not fix it. Stolen-recovered turn-key Kias usually need a new ignition lock before any key will work. Our page on lost car key replacement in Woodland Hills walks through the wider picture.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Kia key?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost, so you can see the reasoning when we give you a quote on the phone:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer Kia needing only a cut key is a much lighter job than a push-button car needing a smart key programmed.
- The key type: plain blade, flip key, or smart fob, and how much the part itself costs.
- Whether you have a working key to copy or have lost all of them.
- Whether a PIN or server access is needed for your model year and VIN.
- Whether the ignition lock or steering column is damaged and has to be repaired or replaced.
- How many keys or remotes you want made while we are there.
- Time of day and where the car is parked.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense?
Sometimes the dealer is the right call. Newer facelift years, or cars where the programming needs server access we cannot reach, can be dealer-only, and we will tell you plainly when yours is one of them.
For many other Kias, mobile service is simpler. The work is done where the car sits, so there is no tow or ride to a service department, which can make it the lighter-cost option for a car that will not start without its key. We also work the same day and at night, including weekends, which a dealer service department usually does not.
If you want a broader comparison of options by brand, our car keys overview is a good starting point.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987. We run a real storefront in Westwood plus our own mobile vans, so the person who answers your call works for the same company that sends the van. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your job to whoever is free.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on Kias in particular, since the right approach depends on year and trim, and the details shift from model year to model year.
Whoever you hire, ask for their California BSIS LCO locksmith company license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and checking takes a minute. You can read more about our Woodland Hills car key replacement work in general.
Kia key help across Woodland Hills neighborhoods
We serve all of Woodland Hills, ZIP codes 91364 and 91367, and 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. On the ground that covers very different settings.
In Warner Center, towers and large complexes mean we sometimes need to coordinate with building entry before we reach the car, so tell us the building and where it is parked. South of the Boulevard, hillside streets carry mid-century and custom homes, and many sit behind driveway gates, so have a code or a way in ready. In Walnut Acres, the large-lot ranch homes are an easy place to park and work on a car. We also work in Vista de Oro, Carlton Terrace, the Girard Tract, College Acres and Dumetz Hills.
Plenty of calls come from outside a home: near Serrania Park, Warner Center Park, Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center or Los Angeles Pierce College. Give us a street address or a nearby landmark and we will find you.
Woodland Hills also runs hot. Summer heat bakes south- and west-facing doors, and older housing can end up with warped wood doors and drifting deadbolts. If the house keys went missing along with the car key, start on our Woodland Hills locksmith page, and we can handle both visits.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key if I have no original key?
Usually yes. On a no-immobilizer Kia we cut a key that starts the car. On immobilizer cars we use professional tools through the OBD-II port, though some need a PIN, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. If yours is dealer-only, we tell you up front.
How do I know if my Kia has a chip?
It depends on year, trim and ignition type. Most 2011-2021 turn-key Kias have no immobilizer, while push-button trims always have one. Late in the 2022 model year Kia made immobilizers standard, but spec sheets differ, so we confirm by VIN and in person.
Will a hardware-store key work in my Kia?
On a no-immobilizer Kia, a correctly cut copy will start it. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia it will not start the car without programming. It may open the door but leave you stuck at the ignition.
My Kia says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often it is a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be worn or failing, and we can help with a key fob replacement in Woodland Hills.
My Kia was targeted by thieves. Can you fix the ignition?
We can look at it. Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key Kias often means a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock, and recovered cars usually need a new ignition lock. The software update does not change how keys are cut or programmed.
Do you work nights and weekends?
Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Woodland Hills at any hour.
Do I need to bring my Kia to your shop?
No. We come to your car, whether it is at a Warner Center building, a lot along Ventura Boulevard or a driveway on a hillside street. The storefront in Westwood is there if you would rather visit.
How do I check that a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work begins. Also be wary of anyone who will not explain what affects the cost or who cannot tell you what your Kia needs.
How much will a Kia key cost?
It depends on whether your Kia has an immobilizer, the key type, whether you have a working key, whether a PIN is needed, and whether the ignition is damaged. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year, model and trim and we will explain what applies.
