Kia Optima (K5 since 2021) key replacement in Los Angeles

Your Kia Optima (K5 since 2021) key depends on the year. Turn-key base trims through 2022 have no immobilizer, so a cut key is enough. Push-button cars use OBD-programmed fobs, with a Kia PIN sometimes required. Wilshire Lock & Key handles both; call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and we confirm your exact setup by VIN.

What does Optima (K5 since 2021) key replacement actually involve?

Kia sold the Optima in the US for two decades, then renamed it the K5 in 2021. Over that stretch the key went from a plain metal blade, to a turn key, to a push-button proximity fob. Which one you are holding decides nearly everything: what a replacement takes, whether anything has to be programmed, and whether a lost-key situation is a simple visit or a careful job with a diagnostic tool.

This page walks through the Optima (K5 since 2021) one era at a time. The year-by-year table on this page lists the details by model year; what follows is the explanation around it, meaning what each owner really needs and where we have to look at the car before we commit to an answer. Where our reference data conflicts or is unverified, we say so and confirm the exact setup by VIN instead of guessing.

If you want the wider picture, our Kia key replacement overview covers the whole brand, and the car keys hub covers every make we work on.

What do 2001–2010 Optima owners need?

The first two generations are the simplest and the murkiest at the same time. The first US generation (MS, 2001–2006) mostly shipped without an immobilizer, which means a plain mechanical key starts the car. Our catalog source, transpondery.com, lists a Texas 4D-60 chip for immobilizer-equipped versions of this generation that were sold in other markets or trims. So the data conflicts, and we do not lean on either side. We test the car and read your original key before we cut anything.

The second generation (MG) arrived mid-2006 as the 2006.5 and ran through 2010. It is trim-dependent. Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) is listed for MG cars that had an immobilizer, but US fitment varies by trim and year. Many of these Optimas pair a plain or basic transponder key with a separate remote. When a chip is present, programming is done through the OBD port.

Model year 2006 is a split year. Early cars are the old body and late cars are the new one, so the year on the registration does not tell us which key you need. That is one more reason we confirm by VIN and by testing the car.

The usual complaints on these older cars are mechanical: worn ignition lock wafers that make the key stick or refuse to turn, worn key blades that stop turning the locks, and aging separate remotes with cracked shells and worn buttons. Often the fix is a freshly cut key and a replacement remote shell or remote, and only if a chip turns up do we add programming.

What about 2011–2020 Optimas, turn key or smart key?

Two generations sit here: the TF (2011–2015) and the JF (2016–2020). Base and mid trims use a turn-key ignition with no immobilizer. These cars are in the Hyundai/Kia theft class list (consumeraffairs.com), which runs through the 2020 Optima. For a key job, that means a correctly cut key is all the car needs. There is no transponder to program, so a lost key on one of these is a cutting job, not a programming job.

The EX and SX smart-key trims with push-button start are a different animal. On the TF generation they use an ID46 (Philips Hitag 2) proximity fob programmed by OBD. On the JF generation they use a Hitag 3 / ID47 fob (NCF2951 family), also programmed by OBD, and a Kia PIN may be required depending on the tool.

One caution for 2019–2020 smart-key cars. The facelift fobs are listed as Hitag 3 / ID47, but transpondery.com lists both ID47 and Texas DST-AES/ID75 for the JF generation. That is a genuine conflict, so we read the fob in your hand and confirm by VIN before quoting anything.

A quick way to tell which camp you are in:

  • If you turn a metal key in the ignition to start the car, you almost certainly have a no-immobilizer turn-key trim.
  • If you press a start button with the fob in the car, you have a proximity smart key and a programmed chip.
  • If you are unsure, read us the VIN and describe the dash; we will sort it out before anyone drives out.

How does the Optima (K5 since 2021) key work?

For 2021 the Optima became the K5 on the DL3 platform. On most trims it has push-button start and the 4A Hitag-AES smart fob, listed under part numbers CQOFD00790 and 95440-L3010. That chip family is verified across our sources for 2021 through 2024.

The base LX is the exception that surprises people. The 2021–2022 LX kept a turn-key ignition without an immobilizer. That car is in the Hyundai/Kia theft class list, and cars.com's 2021 trim rundown separately notes the base LX lacks push-button start and an engine immobilizer. Those cars need no transponder programming at all. Kia dropped the LX from 2023, so every 2023 and 2024 K5 has push-button start and an immobilizer.

The 2025 facelift is where we stay careful. Catalogs, including transpondery.com, still list the 4A Hitag-AES smart system through 2026, but that is unverified for our purposes. For a 2025 or 2026 K5 we confirm the fob part number and the current all-keys-lost tool coverage on the specific car before promising anything.

Every one of these fobs carries an emergency mechanical blade. If the fob battery dies, the blade still opens the door, and the car has a backup way to read the fob for starting.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes by era?

Having a working key in your hand changes the job, and how much it changes depends on the era.

  • 2001–2010: with no chip, a duplicate is a cut. If a chip is present, we program it by OBD. All keys lost is possible on both generations, and we test the car first.
  • 2011–2020 turn-key trims: a duplicate or a lost key is a correctly cut key, with no programming. This is the quickest category we handle.
  • 2011–2020 smart-key trims: all keys lost is possible per our data, with the fob programmed by OBD. A Kia PIN may be needed depending on the tool.
  • 2021–2024 K5 smart key: our data lists an original key as needed for straightforward duplication, and all keys lost as possible. Bring any key you have, including a dead fob.
  • 2025–2026 K5: we confirm all-keys-lost tool coverage per job. We will not tell you it is routine until we have checked your VIN and part number.
  • 2021–2022 base LX turn key: cut key, no programming, same as the older turn-key cars.

Is OBD programming enough, or is it dealer-only?

For every chipped era on the Optima and K5, our data lists OBD programming as the method. That means we plug a programming tool into the diagnostic port under your dash and add the key to the car, with no need to tow it to a dealer in the usual case.

Where it gets less tidy is access. Smart-key OBD programming may require a Kia PIN, depending on the tool. That PIN comes from the dealer (through KDealer) or from a NASTF-credentialed source. For the 2021 and later K5 our data does not say whether a secure-database credential is required, so we treat that as unknown and check it per car rather than claim it.

We would rather tell you up front if your car lands in dealer-only territory. A late-model 2025 or 2026 K5 is the most likely candidate, since tool coverage there is not yet confirmed. If that is the case, we say so before any work starts and point you to the dealer instead of taking your time and money on a job we cannot finish.

Here is how a typical job goes:

  1. You call us and give the year, trim, and VIN, and tell us whether you have any key left.
  2. We work out which of the eras above your car sits in, and flag anything unverified or conflicting.
  3. We come to you with a mobile van, or you come to the storefront, and we test the car and read the key or fob you have.
  4. We cut the blade, and if the car has a chip we program the key through the OBD port, obtaining a Kia PIN if the tool requires one.
  5. We start the car, run every key and the remote functions, and confirm everything works before we leave.

What affects the cost of an Optima key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the real factors:

  • The key type. A plain cut key for a turn-key car is the lighter-cost option. A 4A Hitag-AES smart fob costs more than any bladed key, and the data says so plainly.
  • Whether a chip needs programming at all. No-immobilizer turn-key cars skip that step entirely.
  • Whether you have a working key. All keys lost on a smart-key car takes more tool time than adding a spare.
  • Whether a Kia PIN is needed, and where it has to come from.
  • The exact fob part number, which we confirm on 2019–2020 and 2025–2026 cars where the data is conflicting or unverified.
  • The number of keys you want made, since programming a second fob in the same visit is usually more economical than coming back.
  • Ignition damage. If the car was a theft target, the lock may need replacing before any key works.
  • Where you are, and what hour you call. Mobile service at night differs from a daytime storefront visit.

What key problems do Optima and K5 owners run into?

The problems follow the eras, and the data is clear about them.

On 2011–2020 turn-key cars, the big one is steering-column and ignition damage from theft attempts. These cars lack an immobilizer and were prime targets of the 2021–2023 Kia theft wave. A stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and we cut the keys to match the new lock. Worn ignition lock wafers are the other everyday issue, where the key sticks or will not turn. Lost keys on these cars are comparatively simple, since no transponder programming is needed.

On 2021 and newer smart-key cars, the most common call is a dead fob battery. The car reports that the key is not detected, while the emergency blade still opens the door. Try the backup start method for your car before assuming the fob is broken. The second issue is replacement cost on a lost fob, which runs higher than older bladed keys. The third is water-damaged or crushed fobs, which we see when a fob goes through the wash or gets sat on.

On the earliest cars, expect worn blades, sticky ignitions, and cracked remote shells with tired buttons.

When should you call us, and when the Kia dealer?

Call us when you want the car handled where it sits, when you have lost every key, when the car is a turn-key model that needs only a cut, or when a dealer visit would mean towing. We answer the phone at (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year. Reach out through our contact page if you would rather write.

Go to the dealer when we tell you your car is outside what our tools can safely do, which is most likely on a 2025 or 2026 K5 until coverage is confirmed. We would rather say that on the phone than after an hour at your curb.

Why us: we have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024, in Westwood, plus mobile service vans. You deal with one company, with no dispatch middleman passing your call along to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One more thing worth knowing. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that number before they touch your car, including us. Our own license number is being added to this site, so ask when you call.

Where do we work on Optimas and K5s?

Our home base is the Westwood storefront on Wilshire Boulevard, and the vans reach 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Many Optima and K5 jobs are at curbside, in parking structures, or in driveways, because a car that will not start cannot come to us.

If you are stranded, tell us the street or lot, the year and trim, and whether the car has a start button or a key slot. That is usually enough to bring the right blank, fob, and programmer on the first trip. Our main page has more about the full range of services, and the Kia page lists other Kia models.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Kia Optima have a chip in the key?

It depends on the era. 2011–2020 turn-key trims have no immobilizer, so there is no chip. Smart-key trims do, and so do K5 push-button cars. Older 2001–2010 cars are mixed, so we test the car and confirm by VIN.

Can you replace a 2021 or 2022 K5 key if it is the base LX?

Yes. The 2021–2022 base LX kept a turn-key ignition with no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts it and no transponder programming is needed. Push-button trims use the 4A Hitag-AES smart fob instead.

I lost every key to my K5 with push-button start. Is that possible to fix?

For 2021–2024 cars our data says all keys lost is possible, with OBD programming. A Kia PIN may be needed depending on the tool. For 2025–2026 cars we confirm tool coverage on your VIN before promising anything.

My Optima was stolen and recovered. What now?

Turn-key Optimas without an immobilizer were prime targets of the 2021–2023 Kia theft wave. A recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and then we cut keys to match it. We look at the column first.

Do 2019 and 2020 Optima smart keys use the same chip?

Not always. The facelift fobs are listed as Hitag 3 / ID47, but transpondery.com lists both ID47 and Texas DST-AES/ID75 for that generation. The data conflicts, so we read your fob and confirm by VIN before quoting.

Will my Optima need a dealer for programming?

Usually not. OBD programming is the listed method for every chipped era. Some smart-key jobs need a Kia PIN, which can come from the dealer or a NASTF-credentialed source. If your car is truly dealer-only, we say so first.

My K5 says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?

Often not. A dead fob battery causes that message, and the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the car still will not see it, bring the fob in and we will test it.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate in California?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the number before work starts and check it. Our own license number is being added to this site, so ask us when you call (213) 577-1366.

We cover all these cities
