Kia Soul key replacement in Los Angeles

Many turn-key Kia Souls from 2010 to 2021 have no immobilizer, so a cut key may be all they need. Souls from 2022 on carry a transponder and need programming. We confirm your exact setup by VIN. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and we'll sort out your car.

Which Kia Soul key do you actually have?

The Soul has been sold in the US in three generations, and the key you hold depends more on the year and trim than on the badge. The 2010–2013 cars are the AM generation. The 2014–2019 cars are the PS generation. The 2020–2025 cars are the SK3 generation, and 2025 was the last model year. Kia did not bring the Soul back for 2026.

Across all of those years, the data we work from shows a bladed key and a mechanical backup key. What changes is whether there is a transponder chip inside the head, and that is where owners get surprised. Some Souls have no immobilizer at all, so a plain cut key starts the car. Others will turn over and then die without a correctly programmed chip.

The year-by-year table on this page lists each model year. This prose explains what sits behind it, and where the published information is inconsistent we say so and confirm the exact setup by VIN before we cut or quote anything.

  • 2010–2013 (AM): many turn-key cars have no immobilizer; Philips ID46 chip where one is fitted.
  • 2014–2019 (PS): Texas DST80 chip where an immobilizer was fitted, including smart-key trims; many turn-key cars have none.
  • 2020–2025 (SK3): turn-key cars through 2021 generally have no immobilizer; immobilizers became standard during 2022; smart fobs use an NXP AES chip.

What does a 2010–2013 Kia Soul need?

This is the AM generation. Plenty of these Souls were sold as turn-key cars, and many have no immobilizer. If yours is one of those, a key cut to the factory pattern will start it and there is nothing to program. Where an immobilizer is present, which includes smart-key trims, the chip is a Philips ID46 (Hitag 2), and we program it through the OBD port.

Here is the honest caveat. Published sources disagree on exactly which Soul years went without an immobilizer. Insurance-loss reporting covers turn-key Kias broadly from 2011 onward, while settlement class-list summaries name the Soul only for 2020 through 2022. Because of that conflict, we do not guess from the model year. We test the car before cutting. If it starts on an unchipped blade, there is no immobilizer to deal with. If it does not, we read the key and program accordingly.

An original key is not required on these cars, and making a key from nothing is possible.

What does a 2014–2019 Kia Soul need?

The PS generation changed the chip family. Where an immobilizer was fitted, including the smart-key trims, the transponder is a Texas DST80 (80-bit) instead of the older Philips chip. Base turn-key Souls of this era commonly have no immobilizer, and the same disagreement in the published lists applies, so the model year alone does not settle it.

Our process is simple. We read the key, test whether the car actually needs a chip, and quote after that. Where a chip is present, the programming is done at the OBD port. You do not need an original key, and an all-keys-lost situation is workable.

The Exclaim smart-key trims sit in our data under the same DST80 family when equipped. We still confirm the specific fob and chip by VIN instead of assuming from a trim name.

What about 2020 and 2021 Souls?

The first two years of the SK3 generation carry the most confusing information. Turn-key base Souls through 2021 generally lack an immobilizer, and the 2020–2022 Soul appears in the Hyundai and Kia theft class list. For those cars, a cut key starts the engine with no programming.

Smart-key trims are different. They use fob SY5SKFGE04, part number 95440-K0000. Vendors describe the chip only as NXP AES 128-bit, and parts catalogs split between ID75 and 4A designations. We have not seen that disagreement settled, so we do not pretend it is. We read the fob and confirm by VIN before we order or program anything.

Programming for these years is through the OBD port. Whether a given smart-key car also needs a secure-data registration step is something we check per vehicle rather than promise in advance.

What about 2022–2025 Souls?

Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, so late Souls carry a transponder in the bladed flip key. That is a blade that folds into a remote head. We have not verified the chip family of that bladed key, so we are not going to name one here. We identify it by VIN and by reading the key.

Smart-key trims use an NXP AES fob, with the same ID75-versus-4A split in the catalogs. Programming is through the OBD port, and a Kia PIN may be required.

For these years, duplicating from a working original is the straightforward path, and the data marks an original key as needed for that route. All-keys-lost is still possible. Since 2025 was the final model year, these are the newest Souls on the road.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

A duplicate starts from a working key. On 2010–2021 Souls, the data says an original is not needed, so even with no working key we can make one. On 2022–2025 Souls, a working original is needed for the simple duplicate path. If you have no key at all, we can still do it, but the car has to be programmed without an existing key to learn from, which is more involved.

Here is how an all-keys-lost job on a Soul usually goes:

  1. You call with the year, whether the car uses a turn key or a smart fob, and the VIN if you can read it through the windshield.
  2. We come to the car with a mobile van, or you can bring it to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
  3. We test whether the car has an immobilizer. On many turn-key Souls, it does not.
  4. We cut the blade for the lock.
  5. If a chip is present, we program it at the OBD port and add any spare keys you want.
  6. We test the door, the ignition and every remote button before we leave.

Is Soul key programming OBD or dealer-only?

For every Soul year in our data, the method is OBD. That means we connect to the diagnostic port inside the car and add the key there. We do not see a Soul year in this data where a key can only be made at a dealer.

There are places we cannot be certain. For 2022–2025 cars, a Kia PIN may be required. For smart fobs from 2020 onward, the chip details are not settled in the published sources. If a specific VIN turned out to need dealer-only steps, we would tell you that plainly before doing any work, not after.

If you want to see how this plays out across the rest of the brand, our Kia key replacement page covers the other models.

What affects the cost of a Kia Soul key?

We do not publish numbers on this page, because the honest answer depends on the car in front of us. These are the factors that move the cost, roughly in order of importance:

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer. A cut key on a no-immobilizer Soul is usually the more economical route, since nothing needs programming.
  • The key style: a plain turn key, a flip key with a remote, or a smart-key fob.
  • Duplicate versus all keys lost, and whether a working original exists.
  • How many remote functions the key needs, and whether you want spares.
  • Whether a Kia PIN or other access step is needed on that VIN.
  • The condition of the ignition lock, since a worn or damaged lock affects what we can do.
  • Where and when you need us, since a mobile van visit differs from a storefront visit.

What goes wrong with Soul keys most often?

On 2010–2021 turn-key cars, theft damage is the big one. These cars lack an immobilizer and were prime targets of the 2021–2023 Kia theft wave. Stolen-recovered cars usually need a new ignition lock, and sometimes steering-column repair, before any key will work properly. Separately, worn ignition lock wafers make a key stick or refuse to turn. Replacing the key alone will not fix a lock that is worn out.

Lost keys are the simplest case on a no-immobilizer Soul, since no transponder programming is needed.

On 2022–2025 flip-key cars, the problems are different. Hinges break, shells crack and buttons wear out. Remote batteries die. And a hardware-store copy may open the doors but will not start an immobilizer-equipped car, because it has no programmed chip. If your remote is only dead, try a fresh battery before replacing anything. If the key turns but the car will not start, tell us the year and we can work out whether it is a chip issue.

When should you call us, and when is the dealer the better call?

Call us when you want the key made where the car is, or when the car cannot be driven. Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You get one company with no dispatch middlemen, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our phone is answered 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366.

A dealer can make sense if a particular VIN turns out to need a dealer-only step, or if you want the work handled alongside other service. We would rather tell you that than take a job we cannot finish properly.

One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins. Our license details are being added to the site.

When you are ready, use the contact page, browse our wider car key services, or head to the Wilshire Lock & Key home page.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Kia Soul key have a chip?

It depends on the year and trim. Many turn-key Souls from 2010 through 2021 have no immobilizer, so the blade alone starts the car. Where one is fitted, the chip is Philips ID46 on 2010–2013 cars and Texas DST80 on 2014–2019 cars. For 2020 and newer we confirm by VIN.

Can you make a Soul key if I have lost every key?

Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on every Soul year in our data, 2010 through 2025. We confirm the setup by VIN, test for an immobilizer, cut the key, and program it at the OBD port if a chip is present.

Do I need my original key to get a copy?

Not on 2010–2021 Souls. On 2022–2025 Souls, a working original is needed for the simple duplicate route. Without one, we go the all-keys-lost route, which is still doable but involves more steps.

Was my Soul part of the Kia theft wave?

Many turn-key Souls lack an immobilizer and were targets in 2021–2023, but the published lists conflict on exact Soul years. Some cover turn-key Kias broadly from 2011, others name the Soul only for 2020–2022. We test the car instead of guessing.

Why does my hardware-store copy open the doors but not start the car?

If your Soul has an immobilizer, the key needs a programmed transponder chip. A plain copy can turn the lock and work the doors but cannot start the engine. This matters most on 2022–2025 cars, where immobilizers are standard.

Will you come to me, or do I have to bring the car?

Both work. Our mobile vans come to the car, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Is there a 2026 Kia Soul key?

No. The 2025 model year was the Soul's last, and Kia did not return it for 2026. Keys for the 2020–2025 SK3 generation are the newest ones in our data.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work starts. Our license number is being added to this site, and you are always welcome to ask us questions about our process.

We cover all these cities
