What do Honda owners in Westlake Village usually need?

Most Honda calls here fall into a few groups: a key that has worn out, a remote-head key whose plastic shell has cracked, a smart fob that has stopped being detected, or a key that is simply gone. Hondas are common cars, and a lot of them are old enough that the original key has been through years of daily use.

Where it happens matters, because it decides how we get to you. In a city built around a lake, a lot of lost keys go missing at the water: in a bag at The Landing at Westlake, on a table near the marina, or in a pocket on a lakeside walk. Another group is people who drive to work in the business parks along Lindero Canyon Road, set the keys down in an office or medical suite, and come back to a locked car or an empty pocket. Hospitality work near The Landing and the Westlake Village Inn adds a third group, people whose keys went missing mid-shift.

Then there is home. Most of the city is single-family tracts built from the late 1960s through the 1980s, many under HOAs, with lakefront homes on Westlake Island behind a gated bridge entrance. A Honda parked in a driveway or garage in any of those tracts can end up with no key just as easily as one at a shopping center. We come to the car wherever it is, and we will tell you plainly if it needs to be somewhere else for the job.

If you are locked out but still have a working key somewhere, that is a different job, covered on our Westlake Village car lockout page.

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Westlake Village is about 32 miles from that base. When you call (213) 577-1366, a person answers any hour of any day. Here is how a typical Honda key job goes once we are talking.

  1. You tell us the model, the year, and what you have: no keys, one key, a broken key, or a fob that will not register. The year matters because Honda changed key systems model by model, not all at once.
  2. We ask where the car is and whether you can show proof of ownership, such as registration and ID. We ask for that on every vehicle job, and it protects you as the owner.
  3. A technician drives to the car with cutting and programming equipment in the van.
  4. We confirm the key type from the car itself, using the VIN where needed, rather than guessing from a catalog photo.
  5. We cut the blade, or use the emergency blade on a smart key, and program the new key through the OBD-II port under the dash.
  6. We test everything before we leave: the door, the ignition or push-button start, the remote buttons, and any other keys you already have.
  7. If the job turns out to need dealer or bench work, we say so right then, before you have paid for anything beyond the visit.

Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Honda did not switch to chip keys in a single year. It rolled immobilizers out model by model, so the era depends on your exact car. Here is the general picture, and we verify the exact year for your model before we start.

Several Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s. The Civic ran that way through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. If you drive one of those, a basic cut key starts the car, which is also why those years show up so often on theft lists.

The first chip era used a fixed-code Megamos 13 chip. That covers the Accord from 1998 to 2002, the Odyssey from 1999 to 2004, the Civic from 2001 to 2005, the CR-V from 2002 to 2004, and the Pilot in 2003 and 2004.

After that the line moved to the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: the Accord in 2003, the CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, the Ridgeline and Civic in 2006, and the Fit in 2009. Then came the Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014 to 2017 redesigns.

Smart proximity keys became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

One more note: you may see European-market catalogs listing different chips for some older models. Cars sold in the US follow the eras above. For more on how we handle the brand overall, see our Honda car key page.

What if you have lost every Honda key?

An all-keys-lost job is the one people worry about most, and for most Hondas it is manageable. Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, most models do not need a PIN code from the manufacturer, and Honda does not generally require special manufacturer credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work.

There are real exceptions, and we would rather you hear them now:

  • On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take longer and sometimes means the job is not a simple curbside one.
  • On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory, each key has to be matched to the right memory slot, so the seat and mirror settings go back to the right driver.
  • On the newest Hitag AES '4A' platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), adding a key came to aftermarket tools earlier than all-keys-lost coverage. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before we quote.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Westlake Village?

We do not publish flat numbers for Honda keys, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost:

  • The key type: a mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key, or a smart proximity fob are very different parts.
  • The model year, since the chip era and the programming method change with it.
  • Whether you have a working key already. Adding a key to a car that still runs is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • Whether the car is on the newest platform where coverage may be limited, or an older Megamos-13 car that may need bench work.
  • Whether we are cutting a blade, programming only, or doing both, and whether the ignition itself is worn and needs attention.
  • Where the car is and what hour you call. Westlake Village is a drive from our base, and a night call is different from a weekday-afternoon call.

Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Honda?

Both are legitimate options, and the right one depends on the car. A dealer can order a key by VIN and has factory tools, which is useful for the very newest model years where aftermarket coverage may still be catching up. The trade-off is that the car usually has to get there. If you have no working key, that can mean a tow, and it also means working around the dealer's schedule.

A mobile locksmith comes to the car, which matters when the car is stuck in a driveway, a business-park lot, or a lakeside parking area. For the large majority of Hondas, programming through the OBD-II port is something we do routinely. For the exceptions above, we tell you honestly that a dealer is the better path, rather than starting a job we cannot finish.

If you are not sure which side your car falls on, call and give us the year and model. We will tell you what we know and what we need to confirm in person.

Honda key problems we see most often

Beyond lost keys, these are the issues that tend to bring Honda owners to us:

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996 to 2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning.
  • Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs, through 2000 and 2001, where any hardware-store copy starts the car. That convenience is also the weakness.
  • Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005 to 2015 models. Sun exposure is hard on plastic in the Conejo Valley, which does not help.
  • A dead smart-fob battery. The dash says 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder. They open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently.
  • A flashing green key (immobilizer) light, which can point to an antenna-ring or chip fault rather than the key itself.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Honda key?

We have been in business since 1987. We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile vans, so there is an actual shop behind the phone number. When you call, you reach our company, not a call center that sells the job to whoever is available. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Westlake Village is one of them.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we work. That means the way we confirm a key type, test a programmed key, and decline a job we cannot do right is set by the person whose name is on the business.

The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. If you are choosing between a few options, our Westlake Village car key replacement page covers other makes, and our general car keys overview explains the main key types.

Honda key service across Westlake Village neighborhoods

Westlake Village is in ZIP code 91361, and we work throughout it. The community was master-planned from the late 1960s around its man-made lake, so the neighborhoods have a consistent character even where the hardware differs.

On Westlake Island, lakefront homes sit behind a gated bridge entrance, so it helps if you tell us how we will get in when you call. In First Neighborhood and Foxmoor Hills, the original 1960s and 1970s door hardware survives in many homes. If you are replacing a Honda key and also thinking about the front door lock, you can ask us about both in one visit. Three Springs, Southshore Hills, Trentwood, Hidden Canyon, Triunfo Corner and Village Homes are all part of the same service area, as are the condos and townhomes near the lake and Agoura Road.

We also help people just across the line. North Ranch is near, on the Thousand Oaks side, and Lake Sherwood is nearby in unincorporated Ventura County. The Westlake Village community straddles the Los Angeles and Ventura county line, so a neighborhood name does not always tell you which county you are in. It makes no difference to us when you call.

For fobs specifically, our key fob replacement service in Westlake Village goes into more detail, and if you have no key at all, see lost car key replacement. For everything else we do in town, start at our Westlake Village page.

How to check any locksmith before they touch your Honda

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins, whoever you call. A reputable company will give it to you without fuss.

Also ask what key type they expect your car to need and whether they will confirm it by VIN. A locksmith who quotes without asking your model year is guessing. If you want to reach us before deciding, use our contact page or call (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Honda key without the original?

Yes, in most cases. Hondas program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and most do not need a manufacturer PIN code. The exceptions are some early Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, that may need bench work, and the newest model years, which can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm before we quote.

Do I need to bring my Honda anywhere?

Usually not. We come to the car in Westlake Village with the equipment in the van. If your car turns out to need dealer or bench work, we say so up front.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?

Only on a pre-immobilizer Honda, such as a Civic through 2000 or a CR-V through 2001. On chip-era cars, a copy cut without a transponder will open the doors but will not start the engine.

My Honda says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause. The hidden emergency blade in the fob will still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob or the car's antenna may be at fault, and we can check both.

What is the flashing green key light on my Honda?

It is the immobilizer light. A flashing light can point to a chip fault or an antenna-ring problem rather than the key being lost. We can test that on site.

What happens with Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys?

On some Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims, keys are linked to memory settings. A new key has to be matched to the correct memory slot so the car recalls the right driver's seat and mirror positions.

Is it cheaper to add a key or replace all of them?

Adding a key while you still have a working one is usually the more economical route. All keys lost takes more work on most vehicles. We explain what applies to your model when you call.

Do you serve Westlake Village at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366.
