What do Kia owners in West Hollywood usually need?
West Hollywood packs a lot of people into a small city, and the large majority of residents rent. The housing is mostly 1920s–1930s courtyard apartments, mid-century dingbats and newer condominium buildings, and controlled-access entries and buzzer systems are standard in multifamily buildings. That shapes what a Kia owner calls about. One key ring often carries the car key, the building entry key and the mailbox key together, so losing it is rarely only a car problem.
Wherever the Kia is sitting, whether in front of a building off Santa Monica Boulevard, along the Melrose Avenue corridor, up in West Hollywood Heights or near Sunset Plaza, the job is the same: we bring the equipment to the car instead of asking you to get it anywhere. Kia key calls generally fall into a few groups:
- A lost key, or a lost only key where a spare was never made
- A cracked flip-key shell, a broken hinge or worn buttons
- A smart fob that stopped working, which is often just a dead battery
- A key that sticks or will not turn in a worn ignition
- A car that was broken into or stolen and recovered, with a damaged steering column or ignition lock
- A hardware-store copy that opens the door but will not start the car
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Our vans carry cutting and programming equipment, so most Kia key work happens right beside your car. Our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood is about 7 miles from West Hollywood. Here is how a typical call goes.
- Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the year, model and trim, whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, and whether you have any working key left.
- We tell you what kind of key your Kia most likely uses, a plain mechanical key, a transponder key or a smart fob, and what we will need to confirm, including the VIN.
- We ask for proof that the car is yours, such as registration and ID, before we cut or program anything.
- At the car, we check the ignition type, test any key you still have, and confirm the details against the VIN rather than guessing from the model name.
- We cut the key and, if the car has an immobilizer, program it through the OBD-II port. If the car has a keyless-entry remote, we program that too.
- We test everything before we finish: door, remote, ignition or start button, and any spare we made.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Kia keys fall into three rough groups, and knowing which one yours belongs to explains most of the difference in work and cost.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Some 2001–2006 models use a Texas 4D-60 chip, and from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s Kia moved to the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip.
- Turn-key cars from roughly 2011–2021, and some 2022: most US Kias with a turn-key ignition in this window have no immobilizer at all, which is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action.
- Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. They started with ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s, moved to Hitag 3 / ID47 from roughly 2016 to 2020, and use NXP Hitag-AES '4A' and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems on 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.
- Around 2022: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, but at least one published 2023 spec sheet for the Sportage LX still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent.
Why the VIN matters more than the badge on the trunk
Those changeover years are not clean lines. Two cars of the same model and year can differ by trim or build date, so we verify by year and VIN instead of assuming. When we quote a job, the first thing we ask is whether your Kia is a turn-key or push-button car, because that single fact separates a simple cut from a programming job.
We also tell you plainly when something is uncertain. If the data on a specific year or trim is unclear, we say that we will confirm it by VIN or in person, and we do not pretend to know.
What does 'no immobilizer' mean for a 2011–2021 Kia?
If your Kia is from the no-immobilizer era, there is no transponder to program. A correctly cut mechanical key starts the car. Only the keyless-entry remote, where one is fitted, needs OBD programming. That is why a hardware-store copy can start these Kias without trouble, and why a spare for one of them is usually the more economical route.
It is also the reason these cars were targeted in the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. If a car was broken into or stolen and recovered, the common damage is a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock, and a stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a key. Kia's post-theft-wave anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how we cut or program keys. Whether to get that update is a question for a Kia dealer.
Worn ignition lock wafers are the other common problem on high-mileage cars. The key starts to stick or will not turn, and a new key may not fix it if the lock itself is worn. We look at the lock before we promise anything.

Call (213) 577-1366What if I have lost every Kia key?
All keys lost on an immobilizer-equipped Kia is a bigger job than adding a spare, but it is routine work for the right tools. We program through the OBD-II port. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment, while others require a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, through a dealer or KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access.
On the 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems, current professional tools support add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. We will not tell you a 2023-or-newer Kia is simple until we have the VIN in hand.
If you are standing next to a no-immobilizer Kia with no key at all, the news is better. The key can be cut and the car started without any transponder programming. If the ignition is damaged, that is a separate repair. For related situations, see our page on lost car key replacement in West Hollywood. If the key is locked inside the car instead, car lockout service is the page for that.
What affects the cost of a Kia key in West Hollywood?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest price depends on facts we only learn from your car. These are the factors that move the cost:
- Key type: a plain mechanical key, a flip-key with a remote, or a smart fob are very different parts.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer: a no-immobilizer Kia skips transponder programming entirely.
- Spare versus all keys lost: adding a key to a car with a working key is usually simpler than starting from nothing.
- PIN access: some models need a PIN from the VIN or a credentialed source, and that adds a step.
- Model year and platform: 2019-and-newer smart systems are handled per job and per VIN.
- Ignition condition: a worn or damaged lock may need repair or replacement on top of the key.
- Part quality: low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs can fail intermittently, so the part we choose matters.
- Time and place: a middle-of-the-night call to a street address is a different service call than a daytime visit.
Dealer or locksmith: how to decide
A Kia dealer is a fair option, and for some jobs it is the right one. A dealer can order genuine parts and has direct access to Kia's PIN systems. For the newest model years, some jobs may end up dealer-only. We will say so at the start of the call instead of beginning work we cannot finish.
Where a locksmith helps is in logistics. For an all-keys-lost situation, a dealer visit may mean getting the car there, and the hours may not suit you. We come to the car, work through the OBD-II port, and handle the cutting and programming in one visit for most Kias. It is also usually the more economical route on older cars, where the dealer's parts are more than the job needs.
Before you hire anyone, ask for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and a legitimate company will give you the number without hesitation.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company with a storefront in Westwood and our own mobile vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who sends the job to whoever answers. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, but West Hollywood is close to our base, and Kia keys are a regular part of what we do. If you want the wider picture, our page on Kia keys across our service area covers the brand, and car keys in general covers the other makes.
Kia key service across West Hollywood neighborhoods
We work across the ZIP codes 90069, 90046 and 90048, which cover everything from the Sunset Strip to the Eastside. The city's character shapes the calls. In the Santa Monica Boulevard / Rainbow District and the controlled-access apartment buildings off the boulevard, a lost key often means both a car problem and an entry problem, and we can help with the car side on the spot. In the 1920s courtyard buildings, intercom doors, mailbox locks and original wood doors keep the same people calling us about more than one lock.
Single-family streets cluster in West Hollywood West and the Norma Triangle, where a Kia owner is more likely to have a driveway or a curb right outside the door. The Design District and the Melrose Avenue corridor are busy with storefronts and boutique shops, and a Kia lockout or a dead fob can happen anywhere along them. Near the Sunset Strip, the venues around the Whisky a Go Go and The Troubadour mean late-night calls are common, and we answer at any hour. In the renter-heavy Eastside, we often see move-in rekeys, and a new tenant with a new Kia key often needs both done together.
The climate here is mild, in the mid-basin zone with limited marine-layer reach. Summer heat and strong sun can dry and fade door finishes on south-facing entries, but the hardware effects are modest, and weather is not a big factor in Kia key work. For the wider picture, see our West Hollywood locksmith overview, our page on car key replacement in West Hollywood for other makes, and key fob replacement if your problem is a smart fob or remote. Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a Kia key at my apartment building in West Hollywood?
Yes. Our vans come to the car, wherever it is parked, and the work is done there. If your building has controlled access, tell us when you call so we know how to reach the car. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out the details.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?
It depends on the car. A copy starts no-immobilizer Kias, which covers most 2011–2021 turn-key cars, fine. It will not start an immobilizer-equipped Kia without programming. Tell us the year and whether the car is turn-key or push-button, and we will tell you which case you are in.
Does my 2011–2021 Kia need a programmed key?
Most turn-key Kias from that period have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut mechanical key starts them. Only the keyless-entry remote, where fitted, needs OBD programming. Push-button trims always have an immobilizer, and some turn-key years vary, so we confirm by VIN.
My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade in the fob still opens the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing or the car may need to be checked, and we can diagnose that at the car.
My Kia was stolen and recovered. What do I need?
Stolen-recovered Kias on 2011–2022 turn-key models usually need a new ignition lock, because the 'Kia Boys' theft method destroys it, and often a repaired steering-column shroud as well. We can look at the ignition and tell you what the car needs. Tell us what the car looks like when you call.
Does the Kia anti-theft software update change my key?
No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed. Ask a Kia dealer whether it applies to your car.
Can you make a key for a new Kia with no spare?
Often yes. Current professional tools support add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work on 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES and DST-AES systems, but PIN and server requirements vary by year and tool. The newest facelift years are confirmed per job, and if a particular VIN is dealer-only we say so honestly.
What do you need from me to start?
The year, model and trim, whether the car uses a turn key or a push button, and the VIN. We also ask for proof of ownership, such as registration and ID, before we cut or program anything. Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock.
How much will a Kia key cost?
We do not quote prices on this page because the cost depends on the key type, whether the car has an immobilizer, whether it is a spare or all keys lost, whether a PIN is needed, and the time and place of the call. Call us with your year and VIN, and we will explain what applies to your car.
