What do Toyota owners in Valencia usually need?
Valencia is a car-dependent, master-planned community, and most Toyota key calls here start the same way: someone is standing next to a car they cannot start or cannot open. The details change with where the car sits. In the apartment and condo buildings along the McBean Parkway corridor near Town Center, the car is often in a shared lot or garage, the spare key is in a drawer upstairs, and the only key in hand has just died or snapped. Near CalArts, students sometimes share a car or keep only one key, and a single lost fob can leave them with nothing.
In the single-family tracts spread across the villages, the usual story is wear. A Toyota from the 1990s or 2000s that has been driven every day for twenty years has a key blade that is rounded off and an ignition that sticks. Newer households, including those in the FivePoint Valencia development, tend to have push-button smart keys, and their calls are about dead fob batteries, a fob dropped one time too many, or wanting a spare before the only one disappears.
Whatever the situation, the first question we ask is what the key looks like: a plain metal key, a thick plastic-headed key, a flip key, or a push-button fob. That answer tells us most of what we need to know before the van leaves Westwood. You can see how this works across the whole area on our Valencia car key replacement page.
How does mobile Toyota key service work at the curb?
Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Valencia is about 34 miles from it, so in Valencia we are a mobile call. The van carries cutting and programming equipment so the work happens where your car is parked, whether that is a driveway, a paseo-side street, a shopping center lot or a garage. We give you an arrival estimate on the phone rather than a promise we cannot keep from that distance.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers any hour, any day. Tell us the model, the year, where you are, and whether you have any working key left.
- We ask what kind of key it is and confirm ownership. You will need to show ID and something tying you to the vehicle, such as registration or title, because we do not make keys for cars we cannot connect to the person asking.
- The van comes to you. If the car is locked and the key is inside, we open it first without damaging the door or lock.
- We identify the correct chip type from the car itself and, where the year and model leave any doubt, from the VIN.
- We cut the blade, then program the new key to the car, usually through the OBD-II port under the dash on cars of that age.
- You test everything before we leave: door locks, remote buttons, starting the engine, and the emergency blade if it is a smart key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Toyota key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Toyota has changed its immobilizer technology several times, and the era of your car decides how the key is made and programmed. Here is the general picture from the Toyota data we work from. Boundaries differ by model, and the trucks and SUVs ran older chips years longer than the sedans, so we confirm your specific model and year rather than going by this list alone.
- Late 1990s to roughly 2002-2004: Texas 4C fixed-code chip keys.
- Mid-2000s: the 40-bit 4D-67 chip, often called the 'dot' chip.
- 2010-2011 phase-in: the 80-bit G chip (4D-72).
- 2013 onward: the 128-bit H chip, first on the 2013 RAV4 and spreading through 2014-2016.
- Smart and push-button systems run on the 128-bit 8A family.
- Newest models: 8A-BA fobs on 2021+ trucks and hybrids, and NXP Hitag-AES 4A keys on 2019+ Corolla smart keys, 2023+ Prius (running change) and 2025+ Camry. The same 4A family is listed for the 2025+ Highlander in one catalog we have not been able to corroborate yet, so on that one we confirm by VIN.
- At the simple end, most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no programming at all.
What if you have lost every Toyota key?
An all-keys-lost situation is more involved than adding a spare, and we would rather explain that honestly than make it sound routine. On many 2000s and 2010s Toyotas, professional equipment connected to the OBD-II port can register a new key even when none exists. Toyota's own immobilizer and smart-key reset bulletins, T-SB-0057-18 for 1998-2023 models and T-SB-0013-24 for 2022-2024 models, document an all-keys-lost registration path that uses Toyota's Techstream software and a security pass-code obtained through a controlled process. Aftermarket tools also have documented all-keys-lost procedures for 2015+ H-chip bladed keys.
Newer smart-key Toyotas are tighter. On roughly 2020+ smart-key vehicles, all-keys-lost work in the US generally depends on Toyota server codes, which require credentialed access. Coverage for the newest NXP-based keys, the 4A family on 2023+ models and the Hitag Pro key listed for the 2026 RAV4, is still maturing. On some of those cars the only workable path today may be the dealer or a specialist, and if that is your car we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job.

Call (213) 577-1366How much does Toyota key replacement cost in Valencia?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the honest price depends on the car, and a flat figure would be wrong for half the people who read it. Here is what actually moves the cost:
- The key type. A plain metal key, a transponder chip key, a flip key and a smart fob are very different parts, and the smart fob costs more to source.
- The chip generation. Older chips are simpler to program; the newest NXP-based keys need more capable equipment and sometimes server access.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare when one key still works is usually the more economical route. All-keys-lost takes more steps and more time.
- Whether the car needs to be opened first. A lockout with the key inside adds a separate task.
- Condition of the car. A worn ignition or damaged door lock may need repair before a new key will behave.
- Timing. A middle-of-the-night call involves different effort than a weekday appointment.
- Travel. We come to you in Valencia, and that is part of the job.
Dealer or locksmith for a Toyota key: which makes sense?
Both have a place. A dealer has direct access to Toyota's systems, which matters on the very newest models where aftermarket tool support is still catching up. If your car falls in that group, the dealer may be the only route, and we will tell you that rather than guess. The tradeoff is that you generally have to get the car there, which is hard when you have no working key and the vehicle will not start.
A mobile locksmith comes to the car, which removes towing from the picture for most 2000s and 2010s Toyotas. For cars in that range, key cutting and programming at the curb is usually the more economical route and the more convenient one, especially if you also need a lockout opened or a worn blade replaced. If you are unsure which path fits your car, call us with the year, model and VIN. We will tell you whether we can do it or whether you are better off at the dealer. You can also browse our general Toyota key page for more on how different models behave.
What Toyota key problems do we see most?
Not every key call is a replacement. Often the right fix is smaller, and it is worth knowing the common failure patterns before you assume the worst.
- Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage 1990s-2000s Toyotas, where the key sticks or stops turning.
- Worn key blades that no longer turn the locks even though the transponder chip still works.
- Dead smart-fob batteries. The car reports 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Cracked remote-head and flip-key shells, broken flip hinges and worn buttons.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder. They open the doors but will not start the engine.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently.

Call (213) 577-1366Toyota keys across Valencia's villages and neighborhoods
Valencia is laid out in named villages linked by the paseo walkway system, and calls come in from all of them. In Bridgeport, Northpark and Northbridge, many of the homes are HOA-governed single-family tracts built from the 1960s through the 2000s, so the Toyotas in those driveways tend to cover the full range of key eras described above. In Valencia Summit, Valencia Glen, Old Orchard and Valencia Hills the picture is much the same: older tract homes, cars that have been in the family for years, and keys that show their age. Gated enclaves such as Westridge and the north edge of Tesoro del Valle add a wrinkle, because a locked-out driver sometimes has to be let in at the gate before the van can reach the car. Tell us if that applies.
Near Town Center, the townhomes, condos and apartments mean shared lots and garages. Parking at the hospital campus around Henry Mayo Newhall, at CalArts, or in Town Center can also leave a driver stranded after a long day with a dead fob. At the west end, FivePoint Valencia's new construction typically means newer vehicles with smart keys, so that is where fob batteries and spare-fob requests come up.
The climate plays a small part too. Hot, dry Santa Clarita Valley summers, big day-night temperature swings and wind-blown dust during Santa Ana events can leave exterior door locks gritty and stiff. If your Toyota key suddenly feels rough in the door, the lock may need cleaning before you assume the key is the problem. We work in ZIP codes 91354 and 91355, and if you are stuck out of your car, our Valencia car lockout service covers that first step.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Toyota?
We have been in business since 1987, and that is a long time to see how Toyota's key systems have changed. We run a real storefront in Westwood plus mobile vans, and it is one company: the person who answers the phone works for us, and there is no dispatch middleman passing your call to whoever is nearest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before they start work on your car. It is a fair question and a good habit.
The phone is answered around the clock every day of the year at (213) 577-1366. If you want to describe a situation first, use our contact page, or read more about the full range of Valencia locksmith services. Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Toyota key without the original?
On many 2000s and 2010s Toyotas, yes. Professional equipment can register a new key through the OBD-II port even when no key exists. On roughly 2020+ smart-key models it depends on server-code access, and on the newest NXP-based keys some paths may be dealer- or specialist-only. We confirm by VIN.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Toyota?
Usually not if the car has an immobilizer. A copy cut without a transponder chip can turn the locks and still fail to start the engine. The chip has to be programmed to the car, which is what we do.
My Toyota says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often the fob battery is simply dead. The emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door. Replace the battery first; if the message continues, the fob itself may be damaged or need reprogramming.
Do older Toyota trucks need programming?
Many do not. Most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no programming. We will confirm your exact year and model on the phone, because boundaries differ and some trucks ran older chips longer than the sedans.
What do I need to show you to get a key made?
ID and proof that the vehicle is yours, such as registration or title. We do not make keys for cars we cannot link to the person asking. Have the VIN ready when you call, since it helps us confirm the chip type.
Do you come to gated communities or garages in Valencia?
Yes, when we can get access. In gated enclaves or locked garages, tell us on the call so you can arrange entry at the gate or let us know the best place to meet the car.
Is the dealer ever the better choice?
Sometimes, mainly on the newest models where tool support is still maturing, such as 2023+ cars using the 4A key family. If your Toyota is in that group, we will say so honestly instead of sending a van that cannot complete the work.
Can you reach Valencia at night or on weekends?
Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year. Call any hour and we will tell you what is possible and give you an arrival estimate for your location.
