Mercedes-Benz key replacement in Valencia

Wilshire Lock & Key replaces Mercedes-Benz keys in Valencia with mobile service, answering 24/7 at (213) 577-1366. Older SmartKey cars (roughly through 2014) we can usually generate and program at the curb. Newer FBS4 models are effectively dealer-only, and we'll tell you that plainly on the phone before anyone drives out.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Valencia usually need?

Most Mercedes calls from the Santa Clarita Valley come down to a few situations: a key worn out from years of daily use, a fob that has stopped responding, a spare that never got made, or a key that is simply gone. Valencia adds its own texture. It is a master-planned community of named villages linked by paseos, and plenty of daily life happens in shared lots and HOA streets rather than behind your own garage door.

That matters because the moment you discover a missing key often happens away from home. Picture the lots around Valencia Town Center, the apartment and condo corridor along McBean Parkway, student housing near CalArts, or the parking at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. You are standing beside the car, the spare is in a drawer somewhere else, and nobody can just walk it over. A van that comes to the car fixes that problem in a way a shop cannot.

Gated villages such as Westridge and Tesoro del Valle add one practical step: tell us how to get through the gate when you call. Either way, the first thing we need is the year and model, because for a Mercedes that single fact decides almost everything that follows.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans, and Valencia is about 34 miles from that base. Instead of asking you to get a Mercedes to us, we come to wherever it is parked. The phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

A spare made while you still hold a working key is a simpler job than starting from nothing, which is worth remembering once the immediate problem is solved.

  1. Tell us the model, the model year, and whether any working key exists. If you can read the VIN through the windshield, give us that as well.
  2. We tell you plainly whether the car is one we can handle at the curb or one that has to go through Mercedes. If it is dealer-only, you hear that before anyone drives out.
  3. On arrival we ask for proof of ownership, such as ID that matches the registration or title.
  4. We connect to the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port and confirm which system the car actually has.
  5. We calculate the key password online, generate the new key, and, on chassis that need one, set up a steering-lock emulator.
  6. We program the key and test it: starting, doors, and remote buttons. This is also the moment to have a spare made.

Which Mercedes-Benz keys can a locksmith replace?

Every Mercedes in our reference data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key, so there is no clonable chip in the Toyota sense. What changes by year is the security system behind the key.

In plain terms, a car from roughly 2000 to 2014 is usually something we can work on. A 2015-or-newer C-Class, GLC, or similar is a dealer conversation. Model year alone is not always enough, which is why we ask for the VIN. Our broader Mercedes-Benz key guide covers the models in more depth.

  • FBS3 (late 1990s to roughly 2014): the infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. Key and car swap rolling codes over infrared. Specialist locksmiths can service these cars.
  • FBS4 (rolled in model by model): facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA from November 2014, and new platforms from launch, including the 2014 S-Class, 2015 C-Class, 2016 GLC, and 2017 E-Class. These generally pair with push-button start, and the keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
  • The gray area: most W166 ML/GLE models stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes bulletin lists W166 cars from July 2013 production among those that can be FBS4. We confirm those by VIN rather than assume.

What if I have lost every Mercedes key?

On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is serviceable. Professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM-series units read the EIS/EZS, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key.

One wrinkle: W204 C-Class, W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator as part of the job. That is extra hardware and extra work, which is part of why all keys lost is more involved than adding a spare.

On an FBS4 car we will not pretend otherwise. Replacement keys are ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so expect a multi-day wait. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but we would not tell you to count on it.

In that situation the useful thing we can do is tell you fast, so you can start the dealer order. Our lost car key replacement in Valencia page covers the general process for other makes.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Valencia?

We do not post numbers, because a Mercedes quote depends on facts we have to confirm first. These are the things that move it:

The usually more economical route is the one taken early: a spare while a key still works, or a fob battery changed before the car says 'key not detected'. Give us the year, model, and VIN, and we can talk through what applies to your car. Our general car key replacement in Valencia page covers other makes.

  • System generation: FBS3 or FBS4, which decides who can do the job at all.
  • Working key or none: adding a spare is lighter than all keys lost.
  • Steering-lock emulator: needed on W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars.
  • Key type: Chrome key, black SmartKey, or push-button system, and whether you need a new key or only a battery, shell, or emergency blade.
  • The number of keys you want made.
  • Paperwork: proof of ownership and a confirmed VIN keep things moving.
  • Time of day and where the car is.

What should I have ready when the van arrives?

A few things make the visit smoother, and none of them are exotic.

  • Registration or title, plus photo ID, since we ask for proof of ownership.
  • The VIN, which is usually visible through the windshield.
  • Any key you still have, even a worn, cracked, or dead one. It can help us identify the system.
  • Your exact parking spot: lot, village name, or which gate you are near.
  • A gate code or a contact who can open the gate if you are in Westridge or Tesoro del Valle.

Should I go to the dealer or a locksmith for my Mercedes?

Neither is always right. For an FBS4 car, the dealer is the path: Mercedes orders the key coded to the VIN and handles the Xentry registration step. We would rather say so than take a call we cannot finish.

For an FBS3 car, a specialist locksmith is a sensible choice. We come to the car, the work happens where it sits, and you do not have to arrange a tow for a Mercedes that may not turn over.

Whoever you call, California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that license number before work starts.

Is it really the key? Problems that look like a bad Mercedes key

A Mercedes that will not start is not always a key problem. These are the usual suspects:

Some of these are a fob fix, not a new key; see our key fob replacement in Valencia page. If the key is simply locked inside the car, our car lockout service in Valencia is the page for that.

  • A worn or failed EIS/EZS electronic ignition, so the key is not recognized or will not turn.
  • A failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor on the W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class. The dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which mimics a bad key.
  • SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
  • Dead fob batteries: remote buttons fade first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'.
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades.

Mercedes-Benz key service across Valencia's villages

We cover Valencia in both of its ZIP codes, 91354 and 91355, including Bridgeport, Northpark, Northbridge, Valencia Summit, Valencia Glen, Old Orchard, Valencia Hills, Westridge, the Copper Hill area, the north edge of Tesoro del Valle, and FivePoint Valencia on the west side.

The housing mix shapes where we meet you. Most homes are HOA-governed single-family tracts from the 1960s through the 2000s, so many cars sit in driveways and garages. Townhome and condo clusters near Town Center mean shared parking, and FivePoint Valencia brings newer homes. If you are at work in the Valencia Industrial Center or visiting someone near CalArts, just tell us the exact spot.

The Santa Clarita Valley's hot, dry summers have large day-night swings that move doors and frames, and Santa Ana winds blow dust onto exterior locks. That is mostly a home-lock issue, so for house locks see our Valencia locksmith services page.

Mercedes-Benz models in our key guide

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace the key for an E-Class?

Often, but the chassis matters. A pre-facelift W212 is FBS3 and serviceable, though an all-keys-lost job needs an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator. Facelifted W212 cars from April 2013 production can be FBS4, which is effectively dealer-only. Give us the VIN and we confirm before committing.

Do you make keys for newer C-Class and GLC models?

The 2015 C-Class (W205) and 2016 GLC (X253) launched on FBS4, which is effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. Mercedes orders the key coded to your VIN with proof of ownership, and you should expect a multi-day wait. We will tell you that on the phone.

How do I know if my ML or GLE is FBS3 or FBS4?

Most W166 ML/GLE models stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes bulletin lists W166 cars from July 2013 production among those that can be FBS4. Late cars are confirmed by VIN, not assumed, so have the VIN ready when you call.

How long will a replacement key take?

We do not quote times. On an FBS3 car the work happens at the vehicle during the visit. On an FBS4 car the key comes through a VIN-coded Mercedes order, and that means a multi-day wait.

What do I need to show you?

Proof that the car is yours, such as photo ID matching the registration or title, plus the VIN. Mercedes asks for proof of ownership on its dealer orders, and we ask for it on ours.

My key will not turn but the dash lights come on. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock motor can wake the dash while the key will not turn, which looks exactly like a bad key. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can cause something similar.

Do you serve gated villages in Valencia?

Yes, Valencia is within our service area, including gated enclaves in villages such as Westridge and Tesoro del Valle. Give us the gate code or a contact who can open it when you call, and tell us exactly where the car is parked.

Is a dead fob battery the same as a lost key?

No. When the battery weakens, remote buttons usually die first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'. That can be a battery fix rather than a new key, and we are happy to say so.
