What do Kia owners in Sylmar usually need?

Most Kia calls fall into a few situations: the key is gone, the key is cracked or worn, the fob has stopped responding, or the ignition no longer turns. Sylmar adds its own flavor, because so much of daily life here happens in a car that is parked somewhere other than your driveway.

Picture a commuter who leaves a Kia at the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station and comes back to find the key is not in their pocket. Picture a resident of one of the gated townhome communities off Foothill Boulevard, with the car in an assigned space a long walk from the front door. Picture someone at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center or Los Angeles Mission College who reaches for a key that is not there. The details differ, but the work is the same wherever the car sits: we come to it, so nobody has to tow a Kia just to get a key made.

The requests we handle most often on Kias are:

  • A lost or stolen key with no spare, including all-keys-lost situations
  • A broken flip-key hinge, cracked shell or worn-out buttons
  • A smart fob that no longer works or that the car does not detect
  • A key that sticks or will not turn in a worn ignition
  • A damaged ignition lock after a theft attempt
  • A spare key made before the only one disappears

How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?

The process is the same whether you are in a driveway, a townhome guest space, a commuter lot or a hospital parking structure. Here is how it goes, in order.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers, any hour, any day. Give us the model, the model year and whether the car has a push-button start or a turn-key ignition.
  2. We work out which key system your Kia most likely has and tell you plainly whether we expect to finish at the car or whether the model year needs a closer look by VIN.
  3. A van comes to your location. We check that you are the owner or authorized driver, using the registration or title and your ID, before we make anything.
  4. We cut the key or prepare the fob. For emergency blades on smart keys, we cut from the vehicle's code or by working with the door lock itself.
  5. For immobilizer-equipped cars, we connect professional equipment to the OBD-II port and program the new key. Where a PIN is required, we obtain it through the proper channel.
  6. We test everything before we leave: the door, the remote buttons, and starting the car more than once.

Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Kia's US history breaks into three arcs, and knowing yours explains most of what happens next.

Early 2000s cars use plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Some 2001-2006 models use a Texas 4D-60 chip, and from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s the common chip is the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2).

The second arc is the quirk Kia is known for. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. On those cars, any correctly cut key starts the engine. Push-button trims are different: they always carried full immobilizers, starting with ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s and moving to Hitag 3 / ID47 around 2016-2020.

The third arc is the 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD. They use NXP Hitag-AES (the '4A' system) or Texas DST-AES (called 'H-8A' or ID75). Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, yet at least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. So for the changeover years we do not guess. We confirm by VIN and in person.

  • Early 2000s: mechanical keys or early chips such as 4D-60 and ID46
  • 2011-2021 (some 2022) turn-key cars: usually no immobilizer
  • Push-button trims: always immobilized, ID46 then Hitag 3 / ID47
  • 2019 and newer platforms: Hitag-AES (4A) and DST-AES (H-8A / ID75)

Does my Kia need programming?

It depends on the era. A Kia from the no-immobilizer era needs no transponder programming at all. A mechanically cut key starts the car. If the car has a keyless-entry remote, only that remote needs to be programmed through the OBD port.

Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, through a dealer or KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access. That is a normal part of the job for us, not something you need to arrange.

The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for add-a-key and for most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If yours is one of those, we tell you that when you call instead of promising something we have not verified.

One related point: Kia's post-theft-wave anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes the alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.

What if you have lost every Kia key?

All keys lost is more work than adding a spare, but it is routine for us. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, the job is often mostly mechanical: we cut a key to fit and, if you want the remote, program it. On an immobilizer car, we program a new key to the vehicle with the OBD tools, sometimes with a PIN we pull from the VIN.

The honest limits: on the newest 2019-and-up smart systems, requirements change by model year and tool, and the latest facelift years get confirmed per job. If a specific car cannot be done at the curb, we say so before any work starts and point you to the dealer instead of leaving you waiting.

If you have only a smart key that stopped working, that is a different and often simpler problem. Read the next section or see our page on lost car key replacement in Sylmar.

What about broken ignitions and theft-attempt damage?

Kia owners have a problem other owners mostly do not. During the 'Kia Boys' theft wave, many 2011-2022 turn-key cars had steering-column shrouds broken and ignition locks destroyed. A stolen-and-recovered Kia usually needs a new ignition lock, and a new key to match it. If that is your situation, tell us on the phone so we bring the right parts.

Wear is the quieter version. On high-mileage cars, worn ignition lock wafers make the key stick or refuse to turn. Forcing it can snap the key. A key that has begun to feel rough deserves attention before it breaks.

Three other everyday issues come up often:

  • Dead smart-fob batteries. The car reports 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Hardware-store copies. They start no-immobilizer Kias fine, but will not start immobilizer-equipped cars without programming.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently. We would rather not program a part we do not trust.

How much does Kia key replacement cost in Sylmar?

We will not put a number on a page, because the honest answer depends on your car. What moves the cost, roughly from largest effect to smallest:

After you call, we explain how those factors apply to your Kia before we start work, so the quote is not a surprise at the curb.

Often the more economical route is making a spare while you still have a working key. Add-a-key work is simpler than all-keys-lost, and a spare also avoids the stress of being stuck. If you only need a case, battery or hinge repair rather than a whole new key, that is usually the lighter-cost option as well, and we will say so.

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer at all. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia is a much simpler job than a push-button car.
  • The key type: a plain blade, a flip key with remote, or a smart fob.
  • Whether you have a working key (add-a-key) or none (all keys lost).
  • Whether a PIN has to be obtained for your model year and tool.
  • Whether the ignition lock or steering-column parts are also damaged.
  • The model year, since the newest platforms are handled more carefully and confirmed by VIN.

Should you go to the Kia dealer or call a locksmith?

A dealer is a legitimate option, and for a few situations it is the right one. Dealers have direct access to Kia's systems. If a very new model year or an unusual facelift cannot be done with current aftermarket tools, the dealer may be the only path, and we will tell you that honestly.

The practical difference is logistics. With a dealer, the car generally has to get there. If you have no key, that can mean a tow, and then working around the dealer's schedule and service hours. We come to the car, in your parking space or a lot, at any hour.

For many Kias, especially the no-immobilizer turn-key cars and the 2010s immobilizer models that need no PIN with current equipment, mobile service is usually the more convenient route. For anything uncertain, we confirm by VIN first so you do not pay for a trip that cannot end in a working key.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and our mobile vans go out to 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach the company itself, not a dispatch middleman who sells your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start, including us. A real company will not mind the question.

We also tell you when the answer is no. If a Kia cannot be done at the curb, you hear that on the phone, not after the van arrives.

Kia key service around Sylmar

Sylmar's ZIP code is 91342, and we serve it from the Foothill Boulevard corridor to the Glenoaks Boulevard and Hubbard Street corridors. We also work around the Olive View area, the El Cariso area, the Polk Street area, and the edges near Kagel Canyon and Lopez Canyon. Sylmar is about 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, so we treat it as true mobile service territory rather than an occasional stop.

The housing here shapes where car-key trouble happens. The area is largely postwar through 1980s tract homes, with newer gated townhome and small-lot developments near Foothill Boulevard. Larger lots have long driveways, detached garages and perimeter gates, so a Kia may sit far from the house. In the foothill edges there are horse-keeping parcels and several large mobile home parks, and many cars are parked on gravel or in shared spaces.

Summers in this northern corner of the Valley run very hot, which is hard on plastic key shells, fob buttons and batteries left in a parked car. Strong Santa Ana winds also push dust through the foothill canyons. If you are at El Cariso Community Regional Park, Veterans Memorial Community Regional Park or The Nethercutt Collection and a key goes missing, we can come to the lot.

Home and car often turn up together. If a lockout, a rekey after a move-in near Los Angeles Mission College, or a gate lock needs attention as well, tell us on the same call. For the car-only side, see our guides to car lockout help in Sylmar and key fob replacement in Sylmar, or the overview of car key replacement in Sylmar. Our general Kia key information and car keys overview cover the rest, and our Sylmar service page lists everything we do here.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Kia key if I have lost every key?

Usually yes, at your car. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, a correctly cut key starts the engine. On an immobilizer car, we program a new key through the OBD-II port, sometimes with a PIN from the VIN. The newest facelift years are confirmed per job, and we tell you honestly if a car needs the dealer.

How do I know whether my Kia has a chip?

Most 2011-2021 (and some 2022) US Kias with turn-key ignitions have no immobilizer. Push-button trims always have one. Immobilizer changeovers vary by year and trim, and one 2023 spec sheet still lists it as trim-dependent, so we confirm by VIN. Give us your VIN or model year when you call.

Does my turn-key Kia need programming?

If it is from the no-immobilizer era, the key itself needs no transponder programming, because a mechanically cut key starts the car. Only the keyless-entry remote, if fitted, needs OBD programming. If your car does have an immobilizer, the new key must be programmed.

My hardware-store copy opens the door but will not start the car. Why?

A plain copy has no chip programmed to the car. It starts a no-immobilizer Kia fine, but an immobilizer-equipped one needs a programmed transponder. We can program a proper key, or tell you if the problem is something else, like a worn ignition.

My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob itself or its programming may be the issue. We can test it at the car.

Does Kia's anti-theft software update change my keys?

No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed.

My Kia was stolen and recovered. What do I need?

Usually a new ignition lock, and a key to match it. The 'Kia Boys' theft wave often broke steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks on 2011-2022 turn-key cars. Tell us what you see when you call so we can bring the right parts.

Do you hold a California locksmith license?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts, including us. If you want to check a company, ask for its license number and verify it with the state.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your Kia's model and year, your VIN if you can read it from the dash or door jamb, your location in Sylmar, and your ID and registration. Tell us whether the car is push-button or turn-key, and whether you have any working key. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.
