What do Kia owners in South Gate usually need help with?
Most Kia calls from South Gate fall into a few groups: a lost key, a key that has stopped working, a smart fob the car no longer recognizes, or a car that was broken into or stolen and recovered. Which group you are in matters less than which Kia you drive and what year it is, because Kia's key history is unusually uneven. A turn-key Kia from the early 2010s and a push-button Kia from a few years ago are very different jobs, even though the badge on the hood matches.
South Gate's housing explains where many of these calls start. Much of the city grew between the 1920s and the 1940s, and the stock is mostly small bungalows and early post-war homes, often with rear units or converted garages sharing the lot. Renters occupy a large share of units, and small apartment buildings line Long Beach Boulevard. When several households share one lot or park along the same street, keys get passed around, left in a borrowed car, or locked inside, and the person who needs help is often standing in a shared driveway rather than at their own front door. We drive to wherever the car is.
Lockouts also happen away from home: in the lot at Azalea Regional Shopping Center, near South Gate Park, or outside the East Los Angeles College South Gate Educational Center. If your key is sitting inside the car, start with our car lockout service in South Gate. Getting a door open is a separate and usually simpler job than making a new key.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, where the key sticks or will not turn
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn-out buttons
- Dead smart-fob batteries, where the car says 'key not detected' even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- Hardware-store copies that start some Kias but not others
- Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a week and then fail intermittently
- Damage left behind by a theft attempt
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Nearly all Kia key work can be done where the car is parked. Our vans carry key-cutting equipment and the OBD-II programming tools, and our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood is about 17 miles from South Gate. The van is what comes to you; the storefront is where the company is based and where David oversees the work.
- Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the year and model, whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, and what you have: no keys, one working key, or a damaged one.
- We tell you plainly what that Kia is likely to need. If the year or trim is on the line between key generations, we confirm by VIN before anything is cut or ordered.
- We come to the car and ask for proof that you own it, such as registration and matching ID. We do this on every vehicle job, because making a working key is not something to do for a stranger.
- We cut the key. Depending on the situation this is done by code, by reading the lock, or from an existing key.
- If the car has an immobilizer, we program the new key through the OBD-II port. If it is a no-immobilizer Kia, there is no transponder step, and only the remote, if fitted, needs programming.
- We test everything before we leave: door locks, ignition or push-button start, remote buttons, and any spare key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Kia's US key history has three arcs, and knowing which one your car belongs to explains most of what the job involves.
The first arc is the early 2000s, when Kias used plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. Some 2001-2006 models used a Texas 4D-60 chip. From the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s the common chip was the Philips ID46, also called Hitag 2.
The second arc is the one that surprises people. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. On those cars any correctly cut key starts the engine. That is convenient when you lose a key, but it is also the weakness that thieves exploited, and we will not pretend otherwise.
The third arc is push-button cars, which always carried full immobilizers. They moved from ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s to Hitag 3 / ID47 systems, roughly 2016-2020. On 2019-and-newer platforms, such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD, Kia uses NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A' / ID75) systems.
- Turn-key, roughly 2011-2021 and some 2022: usually no immobilizer, so a cut key starts the car
- Push-button, any year: immobilizer present, smart key must be programmed
- 2019 and newer platforms: AES-based smart key systems, confirmed by model and VIN
- Model year 2022 onward: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during that year, but at least one published 2023 spec sheet (Sportage LX) still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent
What does programming a Kia key actually involve?
On a no-immobilizer Kia there is no transponder programming at all. A mechanically cut key starts the car, and only the keyless-entry remote, where the car has one, needs OBD programming. This is also why a hardware-store copy often works on these cars and then fails completely on a Kia that does have an immobilizer, where the copy turns the lock but the engine will not start without programming.
Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which comes from the VIN, a dealer or KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access. The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and by tool, and for the newest facelift years we confirm what is possible on the specific job rather than promise it over the phone.
One more note, since owners ask. Kia's anti-theft software update, released after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.

Call (213) 577-1366What if I have lost every key to my Kia?
All keys lost sounds like the worst case, but on many Kias it is a routine job. On a no-immobilizer turn-key car, we can make a working key without any chip work, then program a remote if you want one. On an immobilizer car, we create a new key through the OBD-II port. Whether that needs a PIN, and where the PIN comes from, depends on the model year, as described above.
The honest limit is the newest cars. For 2019-and-newer smart systems, current pro tools handle most all-keys-lost situations, but not every one, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. If your Kia falls into a gap, we say so before we start, and tell you whether the next step is the dealer. Our page on lost car key replacement in South Gate covers the general process for any make.
If you still have one working key, do not wait until it is gone. Adding a key to a car that has one is generally simpler than starting from nothing, and it is worth doing before the last key is the one that breaks.
What if my Kia was targeted by thieves?
Theft-attempt damage is common enough on 2011-2022 turn-key Kias that it deserves its own section. The 'Kia Boys' theft wave left many cars with broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks. A stolen car that is recovered usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a new key, and the key side has to be sorted out alongside it. On an immobilizer car, programming is its own step.
If this has happened to you, tell us when you call. We would rather know before we arrive that the column is open and the lock is damaged than find out at the curb. Photos help if you can send them. Repairs to the column cover and other body parts are not locksmith work, and we will say where our part ends.
Also, a quick word on prevention. A software update changes alarm and ignition logic but does not add an immobilizer to a car that never had one, and it does not alter the key. Ask your Kia dealer whether your VIN is eligible, and treat that as a separate question from replacing a key.
What affects the cost of a Kia key replacement?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because a Kia key can be a very simple job or a complicated one, and the difference comes down to a short list of factors. When you call, we can walk through each of these and give you a clear picture before we come out.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia usually needs a cut key and maybe a remote, which is typically the more economical route.
- The type of key: a plain blade, a flip key, or a push-button smart key. Smart keys cost more to supply.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key is usually less involved than all keys lost.
- Whether a PIN or server access is needed, which varies by model year and tool.
- Damage to the ignition lock or column after a theft attempt, which can add a lock replacement to the job.
- The quality of the key or fob. Low-quality cloned chips are the lighter-cost option up front, but they are the ones that fail intermittently, so we do not recommend them.
- Where and when you need us, since a van trip to a parking lot at an odd hour is a different logistics job than a daytime visit to a driveway.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is the right call?
For many Kias, either one can do the work, and a dealer is a perfectly reasonable choice. They have factory parts, access to Kia's systems, and they handle warranty and software updates, which we do not. If your car is very new, a recent facelift, or a model where tools and PIN access are still limited, the dealer may be the only route, and we will tell you plainly if that is the case.
Where we come out ahead is convenience and, often, cost. If you have no working key, getting the car to a dealer usually means a tow or a flatbed, plus an appointment. We come to you at any hour and can often finish at the curb. For no-immobilizer Kias especially, there is rarely a reason to haul the car anywhere.
Whoever you choose, ask for the locksmith's license. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any locksmith you hire should be able to tell you theirs before work begins.

Kia key service across South Gate's neighborhoods
South Gate is a flat inland city along the LA River, with mild winters and warm summers. Marine influence is weak, so salt-air corrosion is not a practical concern for fobs and locks here. The wear we see on keys in South Gate comes from daily use: pockets, crowded key rings and shared cars.
We work throughout ZIP 90280. In Hollydale, in the southeast corner near Hollydale Regional Park, small homes and driveways mean most Kia calls are straightforward curbside jobs. Around the Civic Center and South Gate Park area, and on the Tweedy Mile along Tweedy Boulevard, the calls are more likely to come from people working or shopping who have locked in or lost a key away from home. Along the Long Beach Boulevard, Firestone Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue corridors, apartment lots and street parking are common, and we find the car wherever it is. We also work in the industrial northwest along the LA River.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key without the original?
Yes, in most cases. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia only needs a correctly cut key. An immobilizer-equipped car needs a new key programmed through the OBD-II port. For the newest facelift years, we confirm what is possible on the specific VIN before promising anything.
Does my Kia have an immobilizer?
It depends on the year and ignition type. Most 2011-2021, and some 2022, US Kias with turn-key ignitions have no immobilizer. Push-button cars always do, and Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. We confirm by VIN when it is unclear.
Why does my hardware-store copy turn the lock but not start my Kia?
Your car probably has an immobilizer. A plain copy cuts the lock correctly but carries no programmed chip, so the engine will not start. On a no-immobilizer Kia the same copy would work, which is why results with these copies vary so much.
My Kia says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often not. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade usually still opens the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing or may need reprogramming, and we can check on site.
Will the Kia anti-theft software update change my key?
No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it has no effect on how keys are cut or programmed. Talk to a Kia dealer about whether your VIN is eligible for it.
My Kia was stolen and recovered. What do I need?
Usually a new ignition lock, since theft attempts often destroy the lock and break the steering-column shrouds. The key side has to be matched to the new lock, and on an immobilizer car that includes programming. Tell us the situation when you call.
Do I need to bring my car anywhere?
In most cases, no. We come to the car in South Gate with the cutting and programming equipment. The exceptions are the newest models where dealer or server access may be required, and we will tell you before starting if that applies.
Are you available at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Call, describe your Kia, and we will explain what the job involves.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
Ask for their California BSIS LCO license number before they begin. California requires locksmith companies to hold one. Also be wary of anyone who cannot tell you the company name or where they are based.
