What do Honda owners in South Gate usually need?

Most Honda key calls in South Gate fall into a handful of situations, and they follow how people here live. South Gate grew quickly from the 1920s through the 1940s, and a large share of the housing is small bungalows and early post-war homes, often with a rear unit or a converted garage sharing the lot. Renters occupy a big share of the units, and small apartment buildings line Long Beach Boulevard. That means a lot of households with several drivers, a shared lot or a curb out front, and keys that get passed around, borrowed, or left in a jacket at someone else's place.

So the calls tend to look like this: a spare key that never got made and now the only one is gone; a remote-head key whose plastic shell cracked and whose buttons stopped working; a smart fob that shows 'key not detected' on the dash because the battery died; or a copy from a hardware store that opens the door but will not start the engine. Lockouts happen where people park and rush, which here means the apartment lot on Long Beach Boulevard, the driveway beside a rear unit, or the lot at a shopping center.

If you are not sure which of these is yours, that is fine. Tell us the year and model, what the key looks like, and what the car does when you try it. That is usually enough for us to know what we are bringing to the curb.

  • Lost the only key, or lost the spare and want a new one made before it becomes an emergency
  • Key that sticks, needs jiggling, or will not turn in the ignition
  • Cracked remote-head shell, broken keyring hole, or worn-out buttons
  • Smart fob that is not detected, even though the hidden blade still opens the door
  • Copied key that unlocks the doors but will not start the car

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

We are a storefront on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood with mobile service vans, and our dispatch line is staffed by the same company that sends the van. You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour, a person answers, and we work out what you need. Then we come to you, wherever the Honda is parked in South Gate. You do not need to tow it, and for most jobs you do not need the dealer.

Here is how a typical visit goes.

  1. You call and tell us the Honda's year, model, and trim, plus what happened: lost key, broken key, dead fob, or locked out.
  2. We ask for the VIN, which is visible through the windshield at the lower driver's corner and on the door-jamb sticker. The VIN lets us confirm the correct key type and programming path for your exact car.
  3. We tell you what we expect the job to involve, and what could change it, before we drive out.
  4. At the car, we confirm you are the owner or authorized driver. Expect to show ID and registration or another proof of ownership.
  5. If you are locked out, we open the car first without damaging the lock or paint.
  6. We cut the key blade, or use the right smart fob, and program it to the car through the OBD-II port using professional equipment.
  7. We test every key: door lock, ignition or push-button start, remote functions, and any other key you already own.
  8. If any older keys are lost or stolen, we can discuss removing them from the car's memory so they no longer start it, where the vehicle allows.

Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Honda did not switch to chip keys all at once. It added immobilizers model by model, so the answer depends on your specific car and year. Here is the general picture.

Several Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s. The Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001 had no chip at all. That is why any hardware-store copy will start those cars, and why those years are well known on theft lists. If you drive one, a key copy is easy, but it also means anyone with a copy can drive it away.

The first chip era used a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13. It appears on the Accord from 1998 to 2002, Odyssey 1999 to 2004, Civic 2001 to 2005, CR-V 2002 to 2004, and Pilot 2003 to 2004.

Next came the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: the 2003 Accord, the 2005 CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot, the 2006 Ridgeline and Civic, and the 2009 Fit. Then Honda moved to its G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014 to 2017 redesigns.

Smart proximity keys became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

One honest note: the changeover year differs by model, and a few years sit right on a border. We do not guess from the model name alone. We confirm by VIN or by looking at the car and the key in person before we cut or program anything.

  • No chip: Civic through 2000, CR-V through 2001
  • Megamos 13 (fixed code): Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004, Pilot 2003-2004
  • ID46 / Hitag 2: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009
  • Honda G chip (ID47 / Hitag 3): starting with the 2013 Accord, through the 2014-2017 redesigns
  • Hitag AES '4A' smart fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V / Pilot / HR-V from 2023

What if you have lost every Honda key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars: every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, most models do not require a PIN code from the manufacturer, and Honda does not generally require special registry credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In practice, that means we can usually make a new key at your curb and start the car.

There are three caveats, and you should hear them up front.

First, the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, can be harder when no key is left. Some of those jobs need extended OBD procedures, or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the engine computer. That can change how long the job takes and what it involves.

Second, on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory settings, the new key must be matched to the correct memory slot, or the seat and mirror positions will not recall properly. We take care of that during programming.

Third, on the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), all-keys-lost support from aftermarket tools arrived later than add-a-key support. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the very newest model years can still be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before we quote, and if your car is one of those cases, we will tell you plainly rather than send a van out for nothing.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in South Gate?

We do not post flat numbers for Honda keys, because the same phone call can describe very different jobs. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost, so the number you hear on the phone makes sense.

The usual drivers are below. When you call, we explain which apply to your Honda and give you the quote before we start.

  • Model year and key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key, and a smart fob are very different parts.
  • Add-a-key or all keys lost: when you still have a working key, programming is simpler. With none left, the job takes more steps.
  • Chip platform: the newest 4A-era cars may need tools or procedures that older ones do not, and some model years may be dealer-only for now.
  • Number of keys: making two keys in one visit is usually more economical than making one now and another later.
  • Fob condition: sometimes a new shell or battery on a good fob is the lighter-cost fix, rather than a whole new fob.
  • Lockout or ignition work: if the car is locked, or the ignition is worn enough to need repair, that is added work.
  • Time of day and location: after-hours calls and travel to your spot can factor in, though we answer the phone at all hours every day.
  • Proof of ownership: this is not a cost, but without it we cannot program a key, so having your ID and registration handy keeps the job simple.

Dealer or locksmith for a Honda key: what is fair to say?

The Honda dealer is a legitimate option, and for a few cases it is the only one. If your car is a very recent model year where aftermarket tools do not yet cover all keys lost, the dealer may be the route. We will say so rather than pretend otherwise.

For most other Hondas, a mobile locksmith is the more convenient route. With a dealer you typically have to get the car there, which for an all-keys-lost situation can mean arranging a tow. We come to the car, cut and program on site, and you drive away. Because Honda keys program through the OBD-II port without a manufacturer PIN on most models, the work does not depend on the dealer's systems for the large majority of cars.

Cost can also differ, and we will not make a promise about that. The honest way to compare is to ask each place for the full price of the key, programming, any cut blade, and any towing or travel, and compare the totals. Often the mobile route is the more economical one once the tow and the lost day are counted, but your car's year and key type decide it.

Whichever way you go, ask any locksmith for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one. A reputable company will give it to you without hesitation.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. That is a lot of years of cutting and programming keys on Hondas of every era, from keys with no chip at all to modern smart fobs.

We are one company. The person who answers the phone works for us, the van that arrives is ours, and there is no dispatch middleman passing your job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If a Honda is a tricky one, such as an early Megamos-13 car with no keys, or a new 4A fob, that is the kind of job where his experience matters.

We also keep a physical storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, so we are an actual local business with an address, not just a phone number. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366.

Honda key help around South Gate: neighborhoods and 90280

All of South Gate, ZIP 90280, is within our mobile service area. Our Westwood storefront is roughly 17 miles away, and the vans come to you, so it does not matter whether you are by the Civic Center, near South Gate Park, or out in the southeast corner.

In Hollydale, the small-home neighborhood in the southeast near Hollydale Regional Park, the Honda is usually parked in a driveway or at the curb, and a lockout often comes with a gate or fence lock problem as well. People who walk the LA River bike path sometimes leave the car parked for a while, and a key left in a bag or lost on the trail is a story we hear in this kind of place.

Along Long Beach Boulevard, where small apartment buildings are common, the typical call involves a shared lot, a tenant who has lost a key, and a landlord who may need the locks rekeyed too. If there are several drivers in one household, we can make more than one key in the same visit. For lockouts alone, see car lockout service in South Gate.

Around the Tweedy Mile and the Azalea Regional Shopping Center, people who work or shop there sometimes lock keys in the car or find the fob dead after a long shift. A dead fob battery is a quick fix, and the hidden emergency blade usually still opens the door in the meantime.

The Firestone Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue corridors, the industrial northwest along the LA River, and the area near East Los Angeles College South Gate Educational Center are all within the same service area. For a broader look at what we do in the city, see locksmith service in South Gate and car key replacement in South Gate. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a new Honda key at my car in South Gate?

In most cases, yes. We come to the car with cutting and programming equipment, make the key, program it through the OBD-II port, and test it. The main exceptions are some very recent model years that may be dealer-only for all keys lost, and we confirm that before we drive out.

Do you need a PIN code from Honda to program a key?

On most Honda models, no. Programming goes through the OBD-II port with professional equipment and does not generally need a manufacturer PIN code. Some older Megamos-13 cars with no working key can need extended procedures or bench work, and we will say so if yours does.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?

It depends on the year. On a Civic through 2000 or a CR-V through 2001, a plain copy will start the car because there is no chip. On later Hondas, a copy without a transponder will open the doors but not start the engine, and it needs to be programmed.

My Honda says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Often not. A dead battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob or the car's antenna could be at fault, and we can test both.

What does a flashing green key light on the dash mean?

It points to the immobilizer, and the causes include a chip fault in the key or an antenna-ring problem in the ignition. We check the key and the car's system to see which it is before replacing anything.

I lost every key to my 2019 Accord. Can you still help?

The 2018-and-later Accord uses the Hitag AES 4A platform. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles for all keys lost, but the newest years can still be dealer-only. We confirm coverage by VIN before quoting, and tell you if the dealer is the only route.

What do you need from me to program a key?

We need proof you own or are authorized to drive the car: photo ID plus registration or similar paperwork. We also use the VIN to confirm the right key type. Without proof of ownership, we cannot program a key.

Can you add a second key while you are here?

Yes, and we usually suggest it. Making two keys in the same visit is generally more economical than coming back later for another, especially after an all-keys-lost job.

Do you serve all of South Gate, including Hollydale?

Yes. Our mobile vans serve all of South Gate, ZIP 90280, including Hollydale, the Long Beach Boulevard corridor, the Civic Center area, and the Tweedy Mile. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
