What do Kia owners in Sherman Oaks usually need?
The situations tend to repeat. A key is lost. A flip key finally breaks at the hinge. A smart fob suddenly stops being recognized. Or a car has been through a theft attempt and the ignition no longer works the way it should. The key itself is rarely the hard part. The hard part is working out which kind of Kia you are driving, because Kia has built cars with no immobilizer at all, cars with early chip keys, and cars with encrypted smart keys. Each one calls for different work.
Where the trouble happens matters here. Sherman Oaks has a lot of condo and apartment stock along Ventura, Sepulveda and Riverside, including many HOA-managed buildings from the 1960s to the 80s. If you live in one of them, your Kia may be parked somewhere the association controls, and it is worth knowing the building's rules on outside vendors before we arrive. Up in the hills south of Ventura, houses often have gates, side-yard doors and several entry points, so a car key is one more piece on a crowded ring and easy to lose between the gate, the house and the driveway. And if you drive to work around the Galleria or Fashion Square, a dead fob or a key left inside the car can leave you stranded at a business address instead of at home.
If you are locked out but the key is not actually lost, that is a different job from replacement, and it is usually the lighter-cost one. Our car lockout service in Sherman Oaks covers that case. If the key is gone for good, keep reading.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, so the work happens where your Kia is parked. We are based at a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 8 miles from Sherman Oaks, and the same company that answers your call is the one that rolls the van. There is no dispatch middleman passing your job along to a stranger.
Here is how a typical visit goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We ask for the year, model and trim, whether the car has a turn key or a push-button start, and how many working keys you still have.
- We confirm what the car actually has, using the VIN. Kia's immobilizer changeover happened across several model years and was trim-dependent in at least some cases, so the model year alone is not enough to be certain.
- The van comes to wherever the car is parked: a driveway, a street, a condo space or a business lot. We ask you to show that the car is yours, with ID and registration or title that match the vehicle.
- We cut the new key to fit the locks. If the car has a transponder, we also prepare the chip or smart key for programming.
- For immobilizer cars, we program the key through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Some cars need a Kia PIN pulled from the VIN or a credentialed source, and we handle that step.
- We test the whole thing before we leave: start the engine, lock and unlock with the remote, try every button, and check the emergency blade on smart keys.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Kia's US key history falls into three arcs, and knowing which one your car belongs to explains almost everything about the job.
The early 2000s: Cars from this period use plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. Texas 4D-60 chips appear on some 2001-2006 models. From the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s, the common chip is the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2).
The no-immobilizer stretch: This is the defining Kia quirk. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. That is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. On those cars, any correctly cut key will start the engine, because there is no chip to match.
Push-button trims: These always carried full immobilizers. They started with ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s, moved to Hitag 3 / ID47 roughly from 2016 to 2020, and then to NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A' / ID75) systems on the 2019-and-newer platforms. Those platforms include the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.
Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. Even so, at least one published 2023 spec sheet for the Sportage LX still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. We do not guess at the changeover. We verify it by VIN, and where the paperwork is unclear, we check in person at the car.
Why a hardware-store copy can work on one Kia and fail on another
This catches people out more than anything else. A hardware-store copy of a Kia key will start a no-immobilizer Kia without any trouble, because the car has nothing to check. Hand that same copy to the owner of an immobilizer-equipped Kia and it may turn the ignition and still refuse to start, because it was never programmed.
So a copy that worked on your neighbor's Kia tells you nothing about yours. If your car has a chip, it needs real programming. If it does not, a properly cut key is all it needs, and only the keyless-entry remote, where fitted, needs OBD programming.
Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs are a separate trap. They sometimes work for a while and then fail intermittently, which is a frustrating way to find out. We would rather tell you what a particular fob is made of than sell you a part that gives you trouble later.
What commonly goes wrong with Kia keys and ignitions
These are the problems that actually come up on Kias, and several have a specific cause:
- Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars. The 'Kia Boys' theft wave left broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks. A stolen-and-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a key.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars. The key sticks or will not turn, and sometimes the cause is the lock rather than the key.
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons. Often the chip inside is fine and only the housing has failed.
- Dead smart-fob batteries. The dash says 'key not detected', yet the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. The fix may be a battery rather than a new fob.
- Hardware-store copies that start no-immobilizer cars but not immobilizer cars.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently.

Call (213) 577-1366What if I've lost every key to my Kia?
All keys lost is solvable on Kias, but how simple it is depends on the car. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, we can cut a key to fit and the car starts, with no transponder programming involved. Only the remote needs OBD programming, if you want one.
On immobilizer cars, we program a new key through the OBD-II port. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, a dealer or KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, though, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If your Kia falls into a newer or less common group, we will say so plainly when you call instead of promising something we cannot be sure of.

What affects the price of a Kia key replacement?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your specific car. These are the factors that actually move the cost:
- Which key era your Kia belongs to. A no-immobilizer turn key is a different job from a push-button smart key.
- The key type. A plain cut key, a flip key with remote and a proximity smart fob cost very different amounts to supply.
- Whether a PIN is required, and how that PIN has to be obtained for your model year.
- Whether you are adding a key to a car that still has one working key or starting from zero, since all keys lost is usually more involved.
- Whether the ignition lock itself is damaged. Theft-attempt cars often need a lock replaced, which is separate from the key.
- Where and when you are calling from. After-hours and distance are real factors, and we will tell you what applies on the phone before the van moves.
- Whether the problem is the key at all. A dead fob battery is a much lighter-cost fix than a new fob.
Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key? A fair comparison
A Kia dealer can make keys for Kias, and for some situations it is the right call. If your car is one of the newest facelift years, and the programming support is not confirmed for aftermarket tools, a dealer may be the only route. We will tell you so instead of starting a job we cannot finish.
For most cases, the practical differences are about logistics. A dealer typically needs the car brought to them, which is a problem if you have no working key and the car will not start, and may mean arranging a tow. We come to the car. We also work on keys all day, so the cutting and OBD programming are routine for us rather than a side task.
The lighter-cost route is usually the mobile one, particularly when the alternative involves towing, but that is not guaranteed for every car. Call us with your VIN or model year and we will tell you which path makes sense, even if the answer is the dealer.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith, including us, for it before they work on your car.

Call (213) 577-1366Kia key service across Sherman Oaks
We serve the whole neighborhood, including ZIP codes 91403, 91423, 91401 and 91411. That covers the flats along the Ventura Boulevard corridor, the Magnolia Boulevard and Riverside Drive corridors, and the hillsides south of Ventura up toward Mulholland.
In the hillside areas such as Longridge Estates and Royal Woods, gated drives and narrow approaches are common, so tell us on the phone how we get to the car. Gates are a regular part of life on hillside properties, and a little notice saves everyone a delay. In Chandler Estates, where remodeled ranch homes are part of the picture, you may already be sorting out smart locks for the house. The same visit can cover your car key, and our key fob replacement in Sherman Oaks page explains what we do for fobs specifically.
Around the Sherman Oaks Galleria district and the Fashion Square area, we most often meet people at a business or in a lot after they discover the fob is dead or the key is gone. Valley summers are hot, and sitting at a curb waiting is no fun, so we will not keep you guessing about what the job involves.
If you are in an HOA-managed condo building along Ventura, Sepulveda or Riverside, check whether the building requires vendors to check in or have a guest pass. A quick call to the manager before we arrive helps.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Kia?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with a storefront on Wilshire in Westwood and mobile vans on the road. When you call, you reach us, not a national call center. The company that answers is the company that sends the van, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
We say what we know and what we do not. If your Kia's key system is unverified for your year and VIN, we confirm before we cut. If a dealer is the better route, we say so. You can read more about Kia key types on our Kia car key guide, see everything we do on our Sherman Oaks locksmith page, or look at the broader car key replacement in Sherman Oaks overview. Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a Kia key without the original key?
Yes, in most cases. On no-immobilizer turn-key Kias, we cut a key to fit and the car starts. On immobilizer cars, we program a new key through the OBD-II port, sometimes with a PIN from the VIN or a credentialed source. Newer facelift years are confirmed per job.
Does my Kia have an immobilizer?
It depends on the year and trim. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have none. Push-button trims always have one. Kia made immobilizers standard during the 2022 model year, but some trim data is still unclear, so we confirm by VIN.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?
It will start a no-immobilizer Kia, because there is no chip to check. It will not start an immobilizer-equipped Kia unless it has been programmed. A copy working on one Kia says nothing about yours.
My Kia says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead smart-fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade usually still opens the door. Try a battery first. If the fob still is not recognized, it may need replacement or reprogramming.
My Kia was recovered after a theft attempt. What does it need?
Often a new ignition lock, because the theft wave left broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed locks on 2011-2022 turn-key cars. We can assess the damage and cut and fit a matching key. Kia's anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer and does not change how keys are cut or programmed.
Do you come to condo buildings in Sherman Oaks?
Yes. Many condo buildings along Ventura, Sepulveda and Riverside are HOA-managed, so it helps to tell us the building and ask the manager about vendor access before we arrive.
Is a dealer ever the better choice for a Kia key?
Sometimes. On the newest facelift years, programming support may not be confirmed for aftermarket tools, and the dealer may be the only route. We will say so on the phone instead of starting a job we cannot finish.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work. Also look for a company with a real address. Ours is 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.
