What do Honda owners in Santa Clarita usually need?

Santa Clarita is built around driving. Most of the city is post-1965 master-planned development, with big waves of single-family construction from the 1980s through the 2000s in Saugus, Canyon Country and Valencia. Hondas are a normal part of that picture, and the key problems we see on them fall into a few familiar groups.

Which group you are in decides almost everything: what we bring, whether we can finish at the curb, and what the job costs. A few minutes on the phone sorting it out saves you a lot of guessing.

  • Only key lost or stolen, with no spare anywhere (an all-keys-lost job)
  • A key that sticks, needs jiggling, or has stopped turning in the ignition, usually a sign of worn ignition lock wafers on an older Honda
  • A cracked remote-head key shell, a broken keyring hole or worn buttons on a 2005-2015 model
  • A smart fob that has stopped working, where the dash says 'key not detected' even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine
  • A spare you want made while you still have a working key, which is almost always the easier and more economical situation

Where do Honda lockouts actually happen around here?

Car lockouts in the Valencia Town Center parking structures are one of the scenarios we plan for in Santa Clarita. A parking structure is a tight place to be stranded: you can't easily wait around, and you may not want to leave the car. Our vans are built for work at the curb or in a parking space, so we come to wherever the Honda is sitting.

The same goes for a driveway in Saugus, a shopping lot in Newhall or a campus lot. If the key is locked inside, a lockout is a different and usually simpler job than a lost key. If you have lost the key altogether, see our page on lost car key replacement in Santa Clarita. If you are simply locked out with a working key inside, the Santa Clarita car lockout page covers how that works.

One local detail worth knowing: Santa Ana wind events carry dust that works into exterior lock mechanisms. A door lock that has gotten gritty and sluggish can make a key feel stiff, so tell us if the problem is at the door and not the ignition.

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

Almost everything we do on a Honda happens where the car is parked. Our vans carry key-cutting and programming equipment, and Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars on the road, so most jobs do not need a tow to a shop. We are also straightforward about the exceptions, which are covered below.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Give us the model, the model year and where the car is.
  2. Tell us what you have: a working key, a damaged key, a dead fob, or nothing at all. That tells us whether this is a duplicate, a repair or an all-keys-lost job.
  3. We confirm the key type for your exact car. Honda changed chips and key styles model by model, so the year matters, and where the data is unclear we confirm by VIN or in person instead of guessing.
  4. We check that you can show the car is yours. A reputable locksmith will ask, and it protects you as much as anyone.
  5. We cut the key, or cut the emergency blade for a smart fob, and program it to the car through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
  6. We test everything before we call it done: the door, the ignition or push-button start, the remote buttons, and every key you have, old and new.

What kind of Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Honda brought in immobilizers model by model, not all at once, so there is no single changeover year. The outline below is the general picture, and exact years vary by model. We verify them per vehicle.

Several US Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s. The Civic ran through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. A plain key has no chip at all, which is also why those years still show up on theft lists.

The first chip era used a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13. It appeared on the Accord from 1998-2002, the Odyssey from 1999-2004, the Civic from 2001-2005, the CR-V from 2002-2004 and the Pilot from 2003-2004.

After that Honda moved to the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: the Accord in 2003, the CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, the Ridgeline and Civic in 2006 and the Fit in 2009. Then came the Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns.

Smart proximity keys became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still use ID47 smart keys through 2026.

If a catalog you find online lists a different chip for your car, such as Megamos Crypto 48, that is probably a European-market listing. US cars follow the eras above, and we confirm against your actual vehicle.

  • No chip: Civic through 2000, CR-V through 2001
  • Megamos 13: roughly 1998-2005, depending on the model
  • ID46 (Hitag 2): roughly 2003-2009 on the models listed above
  • ID47 / Honda G (Hitag 3): from the 2013 Accord onward
  • Hitag AES '4A' smart fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023

What if you have lost every Honda key?

An all-keys-lost job is the one people dread, and for most Hondas it is more manageable than they expect. Every immobilizer era on these cars programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models Honda does not require a PIN code from the manufacturer. We can usually make a new key on site and program it to the car, even with no working key.

There are three honest caveats, and we would rather you hear them now.

First, on the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take longer and sometimes means more than a simple curb visit.

Second, some Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims have Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory-linked keys. Those keys have to be matched to the correct memory slot, or the seat and mirror settings will not follow the right key. We set this up as part of the job.

Third, the newest Hitag AES '4A' platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023) is different. Aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key coverage. Current professional tools, such as the Autel IM-series, cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage for your exact car before we quote, so you never pay for a trip that cannot be finished.

For the broader picture, our Santa Clarita car key replacement overview walks through other makes and situations.

Why do some keys open the door but won't start the Honda?

This is one of the most common problems we are asked about. A key cut at a hardware store matches the physical lock, so it opens the doors, and it may even turn the ignition. But if it has no transponder chip, or the chip is not programmed to the car, the engine will not stay running. The immobilizer is looking for a chip that answers correctly.

A related problem is low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips. They can work for a while and then fail intermittently, which is maddening because the car starts on Monday and refuses on Friday. A flashing green key light on the dash points to the immobilizer, whether from the chip or from a fault in the antenna ring around the ignition.

On the older Hondas, worn ignition lock wafers are the other usual cause, especially on 1996-2014 cars. If your key has to be jiggled, the problem may be the lock and not the key. Replacing the key alone will not fix a worn lock, and we will tell you which one you are dealing with before you pay for the wrong repair.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Santa Clarita?

We don't quote prices on a web page because the real answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost, so you know what to expect when you call.

The biggest factor is the type of key: a plain mechanical key, a chip key, a remote-head key or a smart proximity fob. They are very different pieces of hardware. Within that, the model year matters because it determines the chip and the programming method.

The second factor is whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route. An all-keys-lost job takes more work, and on some of the oldest and newest platforms it takes specialized procedures.

After that come the details: whether you need one key or several, whether the car has Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory keys, whether an ignition lock or antenna ring also needs work, and whether the job is at an ordinary hour or in the middle of the night. We give you the details of your situation, then a clear quote before work begins. If a key is dealer-only for your car, we say so up front.

If it is only a dead battery in a smart fob, replacing it is far lighter than replacing the whole fob. Our key fob replacement service in Santa Clarita page explains how we sort that out.

Honda dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense?

Both are legitimate options, and the right one depends on your car.

A locksmith makes sense for most Hondas. We come to you, so you don't need a tow or a ride to a service department, and for most models and model years our equipment covers everything from chip keys through smart fobs. That is the usual reason people call us, especially when the car is stuck in a lot or the only key is gone.

The dealer makes sense in a narrow set of cases. The newest model years on the Hitag AES '4A' platform can be dealer-only until aftermarket tools catch up. If we confirm that is your situation, we will tell you so plainly and not take your money for a job we can't complete. If your car is still under a warranty you care about, ask the dealer about key coverage first.

Whichever route you take, ask for the company's California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and any legitimate locksmith should be willing to show it.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key from out in Santa Clarita?

Santa Clarita is about 34 miles from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and our mobile service vans are how we cover that distance. We have worked in Los Angeles since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so a call from Valencia or Canyon Country is part of our normal work.

What you get is one company, not a dispatch middleman. The person who answers the phone is part of the same business that sends the van. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, so a locked Honda at night is a normal call for us.

If you want to see how we handle the full range of Honda keys, our Honda key page covers more models, and the car keys hub shows every make. You can also visit our home page to learn about the company.

Honda key service across Santa Clarita neighborhoods

We serve the whole city, including ZIP codes 91321, 91350, 91351, 91354, 91355, 91387 and 91390. Our local work spans Valencia, Saugus, Newhall, Canyon Country, Old Town Newhall, Sand Canyon, Placerita Canyon, Fair Oaks Ranch, Seco Canyon, Bouquet Canyon, Happy Valley, North Oaks and Circle J Ranch.

The setting changes the job. In the tract neighborhoods of Saugus and Canyon Country and in HOA-managed communities, the car is usually at the curb or in a driveway. Near Valencia Town Center, townhomes and condos are concentrated, and parking structures come into play. On the larger ranch and equestrian properties in Sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon, we may be working a long driveway and a Honda parked next to a gate or barn.

Wherever you are, give us the cross streets or the nearest landmark, such as Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Santa Clarita Central Park or College of the Canyons. We will find you. You can also use our Santa Clarita service page for the other services we offer in the city, or reach us through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Honda key if I have lost all my keys?

In most cases, yes. Every Honda immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and most models don't need a PIN code from Honda. The exceptions are some early Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, that need extended procedures, and the newest Hitag AES '4A' models, which can be dealer-only until tools catch up. We confirm before we quote.

Do I need to bring my Honda anywhere?

Usually not. Our mobile vans come to your car in a driveway, a work lot or a parking structure in Santa Clarita. The rare exception is a job that needs bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU. We will tell you if your car falls into that group.

Why does my new Honda key open the doors but not start the car?

The key has probably been cut but its chip was never programmed to the car, or it has no chip at all. A hardware-store copy often behaves this way. A low-quality aftermarket chip can also fail intermittently. We can check the chip and program a proper key.

My Honda smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause of that message, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. Replacing a battery is far lighter than replacing the fob. If the fob still doesn't work after that, we can test it and program a new one if needed.

Which Honda models are easiest to get a key for?

Hondas as a group are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. The easiest jobs are usually adding a spare to a car where you still have a working key. We cannot say how any specific model will go without the exact year, so give us the model and year and we will confirm by VIN or in person.

Is an old Civic or CR-V without a chip safer to leave alone?

No. The Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001 use plain mechanical keys, so any hardware-store copy will start them. That is a main reason those years still top theft lists. We can cut you a spare, but the car itself remains easy to start with any matching key.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. Also expect them to ask for proof that the car is yours, and expect a clear quote before work begins. Those are good signs.

What should I tell you when I call?

Give us the model and model year, where the car is, and what you have: a working key, a damaged key, a dead fob or nothing. If you can read the VIN from the dashboard or the door jamb, that helps. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour of the day or night.
