What do Kia owners in Rolling Hills Estates usually need?
Most Kia calls fall into a few groups: a lost or only key, a flip key with a broken hinge, a smart fob that stopped working, a car locked with the key inside, or an ignition damaged in a theft attempt. The car matters more than the story, because a turn-key Kia from the 2010s and a newer push-button Kia are very different jobs.
Rolling Hills Estates is mostly single-family ranch homes on large lots, with townhome and condo clusters near Peninsula Center and Silver Spur Road. On a big property a key can go missing a long way from the car, and in a condo complex the spare may be in a drawer you can't reach right now. That shapes how keys get lost here: somewhere between the house, the yard, a barn and the driveway.
Lockouts tend to happen where people park and walk away. Locally that includes the South Coast Botanic Garden parking area and the shopping and dining streets around Peninsula Center and the Promenade on the Peninsula. If your key is in the car rather than lost, our Rolling Hills Estates car lockout service is the better fit. This page is about replacing keys.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
We do the work where your Kia is parked: a driveway, a condo space or a parking lot. Our vans carry cutting and programming equipment, and our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood backs them up. Rolling Hills Estates is about 28 miles from that base, which is why we come to you instead of asking you to tow a car north.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, any day. Tell us the model, the year and what happened.
- We ask for the VIN and whether the car has a turn-key ignition or a push-button start. Those two answers tell us most of what we need to know about the immobilizer.
- On arrival we ask for proof that the car is yours, such as registration and photo ID. We do this on every vehicle, and it protects you as the owner.
- We look at the car in person. Where the data for a particular year is unclear, we confirm by VIN and by reading the car instead of guessing.
- We cut the key and, if the car has an immobilizer, program it through the OBD-II port. If the car has no immobilizer, only the remote (where fitted) needs programming.
- We test the start, the doors, the trunk and every remote button before we leave, and we talk through whether a spare makes sense.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia do you drive? The key eras in plain terms
Kia's US history splits into three arcs, and the arc your car belongs to decides almost everything about the job.
In practice, a Kia from the no-immobilizer era needs no transponder programming. A mechanically cut key starts the car, and only the keyless-entry remote, if there is one, needs OBD programming. Immobilizer Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others need a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, through a dealer/KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Texas 4D-60 shows up on some 2001-2006 models, then Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
- The no-immobilizer stretch: most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022s, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts them.
- Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. Early 2010s cars used ID46 smart keys, roughly 2016-2020 moved to Hitag 3 / ID47, and 2019-and-newer platforms (Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5, Forte BD) use NXP Hitag-AES '4A' or Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems.
- The 2022 changeover: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. At least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent, so we verify by year and VIN rather than assume.
What if you've lost every Kia key?
All keys lost is stressful, but it is a routine job for us. What it takes depends on the era. On a turn-key Kia from the no-immobilizer years, we can cut a working key and, if you want the remote back, program it. Nothing else is needed to start the car.
On immobilizer cars from the 2010s, we program a new key through the OBD-II port. Some need no PIN with current equipment. Others need a Kia PIN pulled from the VIN or through credentialed access, and we sort that out as part of the visit.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. If your car turns out to be one that really needs the dealer, we will say so before we start work, not after. More on the process is on our lost car key replacement page for Rolling Hills Estates.

Call (213) 577-1366What goes wrong with Kia keys and ignitions?
These are the problems we see described most often for Kias, and what each one usually means for the repair.
- Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars: broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks from the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. A stolen-and-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a key.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars: the key sticks or won't turn. Sometimes the key is worn, sometimes the lock is, and we check both.
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons: often the electronics inside are fine and the key can be rebuilt or replaced.
- Dead smart-fob batteries: the car says 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Start with the battery. Our key fob replacement service covers fobs that need more than that.
- Hardware-store copies: they start no-immobilizer Kias fine, but they won't start an immobilizer-equipped car without programming.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently. A key that works most days is worse than one that doesn't work at all.
Does Kia's anti-theft software update change my key?
No. Kia's post-theft-wave anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed. If your turn-key Kia is from the no-immobilizer era, a correctly cut key still starts it, update or not.
If your ignition was damaged before the update, the update doesn't repair the lock. A broken column shroud and a ruined ignition cylinder are mechanical problems that need mechanical repair, and the key we make has to match the lock that ends up in the car.
What affects the cost of a Kia key in Rolling Hills Estates?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the car decides the price, not the city. Here's what moves it, so you can see why two Kias can cost very different amounts.
The usually more economical route is a turn-key Kia from the no-immobilizer era: a cut key, with remote programming only if you want a remote. The cost climbs as the system gets more complex. We give you a clear quote once we know the VIN, and we explain the pieces before any work starts.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer at all, which comes down to the year, the trim and the ignition type.
- Turn-key versus push-button, and which smart-key system sits behind it.
- Whether this is add-a-key (you still have one working key) or all keys lost.
- How a PIN is obtained for your model year, and whether the tool needs server access.
- Whether the ignition lock itself is worn or damaged and has to be replaced along with the key.
- How many keys or fobs you want made, including a spare.
- The hour of the call, and travel to your location, since we are coming from our base in Westwood.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for a Kia key?
Both are legitimate. A Kia dealer is the manufacturer's own source and can be the right call for some of the newest facelift years, or if your car is already there for other work. The tradeoff is logistics: if you have lost every key, the car usually has to be brought to the dealer, and a Kia you can't start isn't easy to move.
We come to the car, which matters most when you're stuck at a curb or in a condo space. For most Kias, including the no-immobilizer cars and the many 2010s models, current professional tools do the job. For the newest platforms we confirm per job, and we tell you honestly if the dealer is the better route for your VIN. We would rather send you there than start something we can't finish.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We have a storefront on Wilshire Blvd and mobile service vans, and we are one company. The person who answers is with us, and your call isn't passed to a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car, including us. A real company won't mind the question. You can read more about how we work on our home page, or start at our Kia key page for model-specific background.
Serving Rolling Hills Estates and ZIP 90274
We work across the city and its edges: the equestrian streets around Dapplegray Lanes, Peninsula Center, the Silver Spur corridor, Montecillo, Rollingwood, the Empty Saddle area, Hillcrest Manor and Hillcrest Meadows, and the area near Westfield on the unincorporated side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The city's ZIP is 90274. Landmarks like Ernie Howlett Park, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, the Peninsula Center Library and the Norris Theatre are places where cars sit parked for a while, and a lost key tends to show up when you are ready to leave.
The city sits a few miles from the ocean, so marine-layer fog and salt-laden moisture are frequent, and exterior locks and gate hardware weather faster here than in inland suburbs. That mostly matters for homes and pasture gates, not for the key in your pocket, but it is a reason to have gate and door hardware looked at while we are on the property. Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key in Rolling Hills Estates if I have no original key?
Yes, in most cases. What it takes depends on the year and ignition type. A turn-key Kia from the no-immobilizer era needs only a cut key. Immobilizer cars are programmed through the OBD-II port, and the newest ones are confirmed per job by VIN.
Does my Kia need a transponder key programmed?
It depends on the era. Most 2011-2021 turn-key Kias, and some 2022s, have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. Push-button Kias always have one. We confirm by VIN and in person for anything in between.
Do you come out at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366, and our mobile vans serve Rolling Hills Estates. We don't give arrival-time promises on a web page, but we will tell you what to expect when you call.
Is a hardware-store copy of my Kia key good enough?
On a no-immobilizer Kia it will usually start the car. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia it will not start without programming. Cheap cloned chips can also fail intermittently, so we suggest making the key properly the first time.
Did Kia's anti-theft software update change how keys work?
No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so key cutting and programming stay the same. If your ignition was damaged in a theft attempt, the lock itself usually still needs replacing.
My Kia says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade should still open the door. If a fresh battery doesn't solve it, the fob or its chip may be failing, and we can test it at the car.
Do I have to tow my Kia to the dealer for a new key?
Not for most Kias. We come to you and program on site. Some of the newest facelift years are confirmed per job, and if a dealer is the better route for your VIN, we will tell you before we start any work.
What do I need to show you before you make a key?
We ask for proof that the car is yours, such as registration and photo ID, and we ask for the VIN. We ask this of every customer, and it protects you from anyone else getting a key to your car.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins, and check that the company has a real address and a person who answers the phone.
