What do Kia owners in Redondo Beach usually call us about?
Most Kia calls here fall into a few groups, and they follow the way people live in the city. In South Redondo and The Avenues, cars sit outside beach homes and condo buildings near the pier and the Esplanade. In North Redondo and Golden Hills, the narrow two-on-a-lot townhomes often mean a tight driveway or garage, and the key ends up in a jacket on the wrong side of a locked door. In Brookside Village, a gated condominium community, a dead fob or a lost key still strands you even though home is a short walk away.
Then there are the calls from away from home: a key locked inside a Kia at the Redondo Beach Pier, King Harbor Marina, Riviera Village, South Bay Galleria, Veterans Park, Seaside Lagoon or Dominguez Park. A day at the beach is hard on keys. They get dropped, sat on, shoved into bags and carried around with sand and moisture. Flip-key hinges crack, shells split and buttons wear flat.
On the Kia side specifically, these are the problems we see written up most often:
- Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars, including broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks from the 'Kia Boys' theft wave
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, so the key sticks or will not turn
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons
- Dead smart-fob batteries, where the car says 'key not detected' even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- Hardware-store copies that start some Kias fine but will not start an immobilizer-equipped one without programming
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a while and then fail intermittently
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
We are based at our Westwood storefront on Wilshire Blvd, about 20 miles from Redondo Beach, and our mobile vans carry the cutting and programming equipment so the work happens where your Kia is parked. You do not need to tow the car anywhere for a key in most cases. Here is how a typical call goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers, at any hour, any day of the year.
- Tell us the model, model year, trim, and whether the car has a turn-key ignition or a push-button start. If you can read the VIN through the windshield, give us that too. The VIN settles many questions that the model year alone cannot.
- We tell you what kind of key or fob the car most likely uses, whether programming is involved, and what will affect the cost. If something cannot be known until we are standing at the car, we say so.
- A technician comes to your location in Redondo Beach. We will ask for proof that the car is yours, usually registration or title together with your ID, before cutting or programming anything.
- We cut the key from the car's lock or by code where that applies, then program it through the OBD-II port if the car has an immobilizer. If it does not, only the remote needs programming.
- We test everything before leaving: door, ignition or push-button start, remote functions, and the spare if you ordered one.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Kia's US key history falls into three arcs, and knowing which one your car belongs to explains most of what happens next.
The early 2000s: cars from this period use plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. Some 2001-2006 models use a Texas 4D-60 chip. From the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s, Kias with immobilizers moved to the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip.
The no-immobilizer era: this is the defining Kia quirk. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. That fact is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. In practical terms, any correctly cut key starts these cars. If yours has a keyless-entry remote, only the remote needs OBD programming, and the car itself does not need transponder programming.
Push-button cars: these trims always carried full immobilizers. They moved from ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s to Hitag 3 / ID47 systems from roughly 2016 to 2020, and then to NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems on 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.
Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. Even so, at least one published 2023 spec sheet for a Sportage LX still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. For that reason we do not rely on a rule of thumb around the changeover. We verify by model year and VIN, and when the data conflicts, we confirm in person at the car before promising anything.
What does programming a Kia key involve?
If your Kia comes from the no-immobilizer era, there is no transponder programming. A mechanically cut key starts the car. A hardware-store copy of that key will work too, which is part of why those copies seem fine until someone owns a different Kia.
Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which can be obtained from the VIN, through a dealer or KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access. That is one reason we ask for the VIN up front.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for adding a key and for most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, though, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If a particular new Kia turns out to need dealer-only access, we tell you plainly at the start, not after you have waited for us.

Call (213) 577-1366What if I have lost every Kia key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is, but it does change the job. With no working key to copy or to authorize a new one, we have to create a key from the car itself.
On a no-immobilizer Kia, that means cutting a key to fit the locks and ignition. Because nothing is being matched to a chip, the car will start with it. If the car has a keyless remote, we program that separately.
On an immobilizer-equipped Kia, we cut the key, then connect to the OBD-II port and register new keys to the car, using a PIN where the model requires one. On 2019-and-newer smart systems, add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work is supported by current tools, but the exact requirements depend on the model year and the tool, so we confirm the specifics for your VIN before starting.
If you are not sure whether the key is lost or just misplaced in a condo or townhome, our page on lost car key replacement in Redondo Beach walks through what to check first. If you are locked out but the key is inside the car, a car lockout is a different and usually simpler job.
What about Kias damaged in a theft attempt?
The 'Kia Boys' theft wave left a lot of 2011-2022 turn-key Kias with broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks. If your car was stolen and recovered, or someone tried and failed, expect the ignition lock to need replacement. A new key alone will not help if the lock behind it is wrecked, so we look at the column and the lock first.
One point worth being clear about: Kia's anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. So it does not change how we cut or program keys for your car. If you have had the update done, tell us. It will not stop us from making you a key, but it is useful context for the diagnosis.
How much does Kia key replacement cost in Redondo Beach?
We do not quote a number in a web article because the honest answer depends on the car. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer Kia needs a cut key and, at most, a programmed remote. An immobilizer car needs the key or fob and programming on top.
- The key type: a plain metal key, a flip key with remote, or a push-button smart fob cost different amounts to supply.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job, where we start from nothing.
- Whether the car needs a PIN. Some models do, and obtaining it adds a step.
- Ignition or lock damage. If the ignition lock must be replaced or repaired, that is a separate piece of work from the key.
- The model year. The newest Kias are confirmed per job, and that can affect what is involved.
- Your location and time of day. Redondo Beach is about 20 miles from our storefront, and after-hours calls are handled the same way as daytime ones, but the details of the trip can factor in.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is the better fit?
Both have a place. A Kia dealer can order keys tied to your VIN and has direct access to Kia's systems. For some of the newest models, the dealer may be the only route, and we will say so if that is the case for your car. The tradeoff is that the car usually has to get to the dealer, and if you have lost every key, that can mean a tow, a wait, and a trip back.
A mobile locksmith comes to the car. For the many Kias in the no-immobilizer era, and for most immobilizer cars supported by current professional tools, we can usually finish at the curb, in your driveway or in your building's parking area. That saves a tow and a day of arranging rides, and the work is often the lighter-cost option.
If you are unsure, call us before you tow anything. We can tell you from the model, year and VIN whether it is a job we can do on site or one that belongs at the dealer.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Kia key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Redondo Beach is territory we cover as a matter of routine. We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood along with our mobile vans, and when you call, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who passes the job to whoever answers. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One more practical tip: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for theirs, including us. It is a fair question and a reasonable way to screen out operators who do not belong on your driveway.
For a wider look at what we do with Kia and other makes, see our Kia key guide or all car keys. For other services in the city, the Redondo Beach locksmith page lists them.
Where in Redondo Beach do we work on Kia keys?
We serve both ZIP codes, 90277 and 90278, and the neighborhoods inside them: Hollywood Riviera, Riviera Village, El Nido, Golden Hills, The Avenues, King Harbor, North Redondo, South Redondo and Brookside Village.
The setting changes the job a little. Coastal exposure along the Esplanade, the pier and King Harbor brings steady salt-air corrosion to exterior hardware, and keys that live near the water get a rough life. Inland North Redondo (90278) is slightly more sheltered but sits within the marine layer belt, so mornings stay damp much of the year. Neither of those is a reason to panic, but a worn or cracked fob is worth replacing before it fails on a bad morning.
In Brookside Village and the condo buildings near the pier, there may be building rules about where a technician can park or how to get through the gate, so tell us when you call. In Golden Hills and other North Redondo townhomes, a Kia parked in a narrow driveway can be worked on right there. If the problem is a fob that no longer responds, our page on key fob replacement in Redondo Beach covers that service, and the main car key replacement page for Redondo Beach covers every make.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key if I have no spare?
Yes. With no working key, we create one from the car. On a no-immobilizer Kia that means cutting a key that fits. On an immobilizer Kia we cut the key and then register it through the OBD-II port, using a PIN where the model needs one. We confirm the details by VIN before starting.
Does my Kia need a transponder chip?
It depends on the year and trim. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all, so any correctly cut key starts them. Push-button trims always have full immobilizers. Immobilizers became standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, and we verify by VIN.
My hardware-store key copy will not start my Kia. Why?
Your car probably has an immobilizer. A plain copy turns the lock but carries no authorized chip, so the car will not start until the key is programmed. Hardware-store copies do start Kias that have no immobilizer, which is why the same trick works on some Kias and not others.
My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often the battery is just dead. The hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door, and replacing the battery may solve it. If the fob still fails after that, the fob itself may be worn or damaged, and we can test it and replace it if needed.
My Kia was a theft target. Can a new key fix it?
Not by itself. If the ignition lock or steering column was damaged, the lock usually needs to be replaced before any key will work properly. Kia's anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer and does not change how keys are cut or programmed.
Will you need proof that the Kia is mine?
Yes. We ask for ID and registration or title before cutting or programming a key. It protects you as much as us, since a locksmith who skips that step can be handing a key to anyone.
Are there Kias you cannot program at the curb?
Possibly, on the newest facelift years, where PIN and server requirements vary by model year and tool. We confirm those per job. If a car turns out to need dealer-only access, we tell you plainly before any work begins so you can plan accordingly.
Do you answer the phone late at night?
Yes. (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, including holidays. Tell us your Kia's model, year and where you are parked in Redondo Beach, and we will explain the next step.
