What do Kia owners in Panorama City usually need?
Most Kia calls from Panorama City start in a parking space, not a driveway. The neighborhood has dense apartment corridors along Van Nuys and Roscoe Boulevards with a high renter share, so a lot of Kias live in shared lots, carports and street spots outside multifamily buildings. That changes the problem. A key lost on a bus ride, a fob that went through the wash in a pocket, or a spare that stayed with a former roommate usually means the car is sitting exactly where it is parked and needs help right there.
The rest of the calls come from people working or shopping nearby. Panorama Mall, Plaza del Valle and The Plant Shopping Center all have big lots, and so does the Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center campus. A dead fob battery or a snapped key in a large lot, on a day when you have somewhere to be, is a very ordinary reason to pick up the phone. The situations we see most with Kias are these:
- A key or fob lost completely, with no spare in the house
- A broken flip-key hinge, a cracked shell or worn-out buttons
- A smart fob that makes the car report 'key not detected' because the battery is dead, even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- An ignition that sticks or will not turn because the wafers have worn on a high-mileage car
- A hardware-store copy that opens the door but will not start the car
- A cloned or aftermarket chip or fob that works some days and fails on others
- A damaged steering column or ignition lock after a theft attempt
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
We run mobile service vans, and we also keep a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Panorama City is about 16 miles from that base. You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour, any day, and a person answers. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You tell us the make, model, year and what happened: lost key, broken key, dead fob, or no keys at all. If you can read us the VIN from the corner of the dashboard or the door-jamb sticker, that helps a great deal.
- Before anyone drives, we tell you what kind of key your Kia most likely uses and what we will need to finish the job. If your year falls in a gray zone, we say so instead of guessing.
- A technician comes to the car wherever it is: an apartment lot, a carport, a curb on Roscoe, or a garage at a medical campus.
- We confirm that you are the person who should have the car. Expect to show ID and something that ties you to the vehicle, such as registration.
- We cut the key, and on immobilizer-equipped Kias we program it through the OBD-II port with professional tools. On cars with no immobilizer, we cut the key and program only the remote if the car has one.
- We test everything before we leave: the door, the ignition or push-button start, the remote buttons, and the spare if you ordered one.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia keys need programming and which do not?
Kia's US key history has three arcs, and the middle one is unusual, so it is worth walking through in plain terms.
The early arc covers the early 2000s. Those cars use plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. Some 2001 to 2006 models use a Texas 4D-60 chip, and from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s Kia moved to the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip.
The defining quirk comes next. Most 2011 to 2021 US Kias with a turn-key ignition, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. On those cars, any correctly cut key starts the engine. There is no transponder to program. Only the keyless-entry remote, where the car has one, needs OBD programming.
Push-button Kias are a different story. They always carried full immobilizers. The early 2010s smart keys used ID46, then roughly 2016 to 2020 the cars moved to Hitag 3 / ID47, and 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD use NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems.
Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. Even so, at least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. For 2022 and 2023 Kias we do not assume. We confirm by VIN and in person.
Here is how that sorts out when it comes to the actual work:
- No-immobilizer turn-key Kias: a mechanically cut key starts the car, and only the remote needs OBD programming
- Immobilizer Kias: programmed through the OBD-II port. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment, while others need a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, a dealer/KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access
- 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems: current professional tools support add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work, but PIN and server requirements vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job
Does Kia's anti-theft software update change the key?
No. The software update Kia released after the theft wave does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. That means it does not change how your key is cut or how it is programmed, and having the update installed will not stop us from making you a key. If you want more detail by model, our Kia key page covers the families we work on.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you have lost every Kia key?
All keys lost is the call people dread, and the honest answer is that it depends on the car.
If your Kia is a turn-key model from the no-immobilizer era, the situation is much simpler than owners expect. Nothing has to be programmed for the engine to start, so the job is making a working key for the lock. If the car has a keyless remote, that gets programmed separately through the OBD port, and you can decide whether you want it.
If your Kia has an immobilizer, all keys lost means a new key has to be cut and then introduced to the car with professional programming tools. On many 2010s models that works without a PIN using current aftermarket equipment. Other models require a Kia PIN from the VIN, a dealer or KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access. On 2019-and-newer push-button cars, current tools handle most all-keys-lost work, but requirements vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job.
So the first call matters. Give us the VIN and the year, and we will tell you plainly whether we can finish the job at the curb. If you have lost the key and are not sure of anything else, start with our page on lost car key replacement in Panorama City.
What affects the cost of a Kia key in Panorama City?
We do not publish numbers on a web page, because a Kia key is not one product. These are the things that move the cost up or down, and we walk through them with you before any work starts:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia needs a cut key and not much more, which is usually the more economical route
- The kind of key: a plain mechanical key, a flip key, or a smart fob with push-button start
- The model year and platform, since newer Hitag-AES and DST-AES systems take more equipment and more checking
- Add-a-key versus all keys lost. A spare made while you still have a working key is simpler than starting from nothing
- Whether a PIN or server access is required for your model year, and how it has to be obtained
- How many keys or fobs you want when we leave
- Condition of the ignition. A worn or theft-damaged lock may need work before a new key will behave
- The quality of the key or fob hardware. Cloned and low-quality aftermarket parts are a common reason for intermittent failures
- Time of day and where the car is parked

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith for a Kia key: what is the fair comparison?
A Kia dealer can make factory keys and has direct access to the manufacturer's systems. For some cars, particularly the newest facelift years where server and PIN requirements are still being confirmed, the dealer may be the only route, and if that is your situation we will tell you rather than waste your time.
The practical differences are mostly about logistics. A dealer needs the car brought to it, and with all keys lost that can mean arranging a tow. Dealers keep set hours and appointments. We come to the car, at any hour, which matters when the Kia is stuck in a lot behind an apartment building or a medical campus garage.
For no-immobilizer turn-key Kias, a dealer visit is often more than the job needs, since a correctly cut key starts the car. For many 2010s immobilizer cars, current aftermarket equipment can program a key without a dealer PIN. Ask each of us what the job actually involves and compare the answers.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, so the person who answers the phone is not a dispatch middleman selling your call to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car. That goes for us too. Whoever you call, ask for the license number, and ask what they will do if your Kia turns out to need dealer-only access. A straight answer to both is a good sign.
If you are only locked out and still have your key inside, that is a different and often simpler job, and we cover it on our Panorama City car lockout page.
Kia key service around Panorama City's streets and neighborhoods
Panorama City was built out in the late 1940s as a Kaiser Community Homes development, one of the Valley's first planned postwar communities, and the Kaiser Community Homes tract is still the original core. Many of those modest houses have one driveway and one set of keys that has been passed around for years. When a car key goes missing there, the house keys are often on the same ring, and we can talk through rekeying the house during the same visit.
Along the Van Nuys Boulevard and Roscoe Boulevard corridors, the buildings are denser and older multifamily properties often have security screen doors and window grilles. A lost ring there can mean a car, a security door and a gate all at once. Our crew handles those calls regularly and can sort the car first, since it is usually the thing you need to move.
Around the Panorama Mall district and The Plant area, the former GM assembly plant site, lots are large and cars sit for hours. Near the Nordhoff Street edge and the 91402 ZIP code more broadly, we get the same mix of apartment lot and curbside calls. Summers on the valley floor are hot, and a Kia left parked in that heat is a common backdrop for a fob that stops responding or a key that sticks.

Call (213) 577-1366What about Kias damaged in a theft attempt?
Panorama City is not unique here, but Kia owners know the problem. On 2011 to 2022 turn-key cars, the 'Kia Boys' theft wave left many cars with broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks. A stolen-and-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and the key has to match the new lock. That is a different job from a simple replacement, so tell us on the phone if your Kia has been through this.
Separate from theft damage, a high-mileage Kia can have worn ignition wafers, which show up as a key that sticks or will not turn. A new key cut accurately can help, but a badly worn lock sometimes has to be replaced. We will look at it and tell you which.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key if I have no spare in Panorama City?
Often yes, and we come to the car. Whether it can be done at the curb depends on whether your Kia has an immobilizer and which model year it is. Give us the VIN when you call at (213) 577-1366 and we will tell you what the job needs.
Does my Kia need a transponder chip programmed?
It depends on the car. Most 2011 to 2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. Push-button Kias always have an immobilizer and need programming. For 2022 and 2023 models we confirm by VIN.
My hardware-store Kia key opens the door but will not start the car. Why?
Your Kia almost certainly has an immobilizer. A hardware-store copy starts a no-immobilizer Kia fine, but it cannot start an immobilizer-equipped one until the key is programmed to the car.
My Kia says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing, and we can replace it. See our key fob replacement page for more.
Will the anti-theft software update affect my new key?
No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed.
Can you come to a parking lot or apartment building?
Yes. Most of our Kia work in Panorama City is in apartment lots, shopping center lots and curbside spots. Tell us where the car is parked and any access details, such as gate codes.
Will you tell me if the dealer is the only option?
Yes. On the newest facelift years, PIN and server requirements are confirmed per job, and if a dealer is the only route we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van.
How do I check that a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number before work starts, and ask what happens if your car turns out to need dealer-only access. If you want to reach us first, use our contact page.
