What do Honda owners in Panorama City usually need?
Most Honda calls from Panorama City fall into a few groups: a key that no longer turns smoothly, a lost key with no spare, a fob that has quit, or a car that unlocks but won't start because the key was copied without a chip. Which group you are in changes the job, so the first thing we ask is the model and year.
The neighborhood shapes where these problems show up. Panorama City was built out in the late 1940s as a Kaiser Community Homes development, and those modest tract houses still anchor the area. Around them, dense apartment corridors run along Van Nuys and Roscoe Boulevards with a high renter share. In an apartment building, a Honda is often parked in a shared lot or on the street, and the spare key may be in a unit upstairs, with a roommate or relative, or nowhere at all. In the tract-house streets, the car is usually in a driveway and a lost key could be anywhere between the front door and the Panorama Mall district.
Lockouts follow the same pattern: they happen wherever the car is parked. That could be along the Van Nuys Boulevard corridor, near Plaza del Valle, at The Plant Shopping Center, or by the Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center. If your key is locked inside the car, that is a lockout rather than a key problem, and our car lockout service in Panorama City covers it. Often we can open the car first and then work out whether you need a new key at all.
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
We bring the equipment to the car. For most Hondas that means nobody has to tow the vehicle anywhere to get a working key, which matters when the car has no key that will start it. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 16 miles from Panorama City, and our mobile vans work from that base. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered around the clock, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, and what happened to the key.
- We ask for the VIN and the key type you are working with, then tell you plainly whether your Honda is a car we can finish on site or one that needs a different route.
- We verify that you own the car, using registration or ID that matches the vehicle.
- If the car is locked, we open it without damaging the door or window.
- We cut the key blade, or the emergency blade for a smart key, and program the transponder or proximity key through the OBD-II port using professional equipment.
- We test everything: door locks, trunk, remote buttons, and starting the engine more than once. You see it working before we pack up.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Honda brought in immobilizers model by model, not all at once, so the era depends on the exact model and year. We verify the changeover year for each car. In broad terms, here is how the story runs for US models.
If your Honda doesn't fit neatly into one of these, that is normal. Exact changeover years vary by model, and we confirm yours by VIN. European-market catalogs list different chips for some late-1990s and early-2000s models, but US cars follow the eras below. For a wider look at the brand, see our Honda car key page.
- Plain mechanical keys: several US Hondas kept them into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Any hardware-store copy starts these cars, which is one reason those years still show up on theft lists.
- First chip era: a fixed-code Megamos 13 chip on the Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
- Second chip era: the Philips ID46/Hitag 2 chip, starting with the 2003 Accord, then the CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, the Ridgeline and Civic in 2006, and the Fit in 2009.
- Honda G chip (ID47/Hitag 3): it began with the 2013 Accord and spread through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's following redesign.
- Newest platform: Hitag AES '4A' fobs on the Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
What if you've lost every Honda key?
An all-keys-lost job is the one people dread, and with most Hondas it is more manageable than they expect. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer. Honda also doesn't generally require special registry credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. Our page on lost car key replacement in Panorama City walks through the general process.
There are honest caveats, and we would rather you hear them now than on the curb.
On the earliest Megamos 13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take longer than a routine job, and sometimes the unit has to come out of the car.
On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory, each key has to be matched to the correct memory slot, or the seat and mirror settings won't follow the right key.
On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage for your VIN before we quote, and if your car is a dealer-only case, we tell you that rather than send a van out.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Honda key in Panorama City?
We don't post flat figures, because the same word, 'Honda key,' covers very different jobs. These are the things that move the cost up or down:
- Key type: a basic mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity key are different parts with different costs behind them.
- Model and year: the chip era and platform decide which equipment and key blank the job requires.
- Add-a-key versus all keys lost: having a working key to copy from is usually the lighter-cost situation. Starting from zero keys takes more steps.
- Special cases: early Megamos 13 bench work, or newest-year models that need extra tool support, add time and cost.
- How many keys you want: programming a second or third key during the same visit is often more economical than calling back later.
- Blade cutting: laser-cut and standard-cut blades are different work, and a worn ignition can add diagnosis time.
- Time and place: nights, holidays and distance from our Westwood base can affect the total.
- Ignition or lock condition: if the ignition cylinder is worn, a new key alone may not fix the problem.
Dealer or locksmith for a Honda key: what's fair to say?
A dealer is a reasonable choice in some situations. If your Honda is one of the newest model years where aftermarket all-keys-lost tools haven't caught up, the dealer may be the only route, and we will say so. Dealers also stock factory parts and can work from your VIN and paperwork.
The tradeoff is logistics. A dealer generally needs the car to be brought to them, which means a tow if you have no working key, and an appointment rather than a visit at 11 at night. A mobile locksmith comes to the car, and for most Hondas that is the more economical route once towing and lost time are counted. We can also handle jobs a dealer typically doesn't, like opening the car, repairing a worn ignition, or cutting a key from a half-broken original.
The honest rule: call us with the VIN and ask. If we can do it on site, we will. If your car needs the dealer, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
Common Honda key problems we fix
Some trouble repeats across Honda models. Recognizing yours can save a service call or confirm that you need one.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning altogether. A new key may help, but sometimes the ignition needs work.
- Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs through 2000-2001: any hardware-store copy starts them, which is why they are frequent theft targets.
- Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models. The electronics inside can often be moved to a fresh shell. See our key fob replacement in Panorama City page.
- Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash reports 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: they open the doors but won't start the engine.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently, working one day and not the next.
- A flashing green key (immobilizer) light, which can come from an antenna-ring or chip fault rather than the key itself.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda
We have been in business since 1987. That is long enough to have seen Honda's whole progression, from plain steel keys to the newest smart fobs. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so the company that answers (213) 577-1366 is the company that shows up. There is no dispatch middleman passing your call to whoever is nearest. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
One piece of advice that applies to any locksmith, including us: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it. A company that dodges the question is telling you something. For a view of every service we offer for this neighborhood, start at our Panorama City locksmith page.
Honda keys around Panorama City: what the neighborhood looks like
Panorama City is ZIP 91402, a mid-valley neighborhood with hot summers and no coastal corrosion to speak of. That matters little to a transponder chip, but it does mean worn ignitions and sticking keys here are usually a story of age and wear rather than salt air.
In the original Kaiser Community Homes tract, Hondas tend to park at the house, and the local work is a mix of key replacement and rekeying those postwar homes. Along the Van Nuys Boulevard and Roscoe Boulevard corridors, multifamily buildings are common, and security screen doors and window grilles are frequent on the older ones. If your spare key is stuck behind a security door, we can help with that as well as the car.
Around the Panorama Mall district and The Plant area, the former GM assembly plant site, the calls are often a lockout or a lost key while someone is out running errands. The Nordhoff Street edge and the area around the Kaiser Permanente medical campus see the same kinds of calls. Wherever the car is, give us the cross streets and a description, and we'll come to it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key in Panorama City if I have no spare?
Yes, in most cases. Hondas program through the OBD-II port, and no manufacturer PIN code is needed on most models. Some early Megamos 13 cars and the very newest model years are exceptions, and we confirm by VIN before we commit to a visit.
Do I need a chip in my Honda key?
Most Hondas from the late 1990s onward do, though some models stayed mechanical into the early 2000s, such as the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. A copy without a chip may open the doors but will not start a chipped car.
Why does my Honda say 'key not detected'?
On smart-key models, the most common cause is a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob will still open the door. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob or the car's antenna may need testing.
Will you come to my apartment building or shopping center lot?
Yes. Our vans come to the car, whether it is in an apartment lot, on a street, at a driveway or at a shopping center. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where it is parked and what Honda it is.
Can you program a key for a brand-new Honda?
Often, but not always. On the newest platform, aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage came later than add-a-key, and the latest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We check your VIN and tell you honestly.
What do Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys mean on my Honda?
Some Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims link seat and mirror settings to a specific key. Each programmed key has to be matched to the right memory slot, so we handle that during programming.
My Honda key is hard to turn. Do I need a new key or a new ignition?
On 1996-2014 Hondas, worn ignition wafers are a common cause. A fresh key can help if the old one is worn, but if the ignition itself is worn, the cylinder may need repair. We check both on site.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any locksmith should show it on request. Also look for a real address and a company that answers by name. Ours is 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.
How is the price of a Honda key decided?
It depends on key type, model year, whether you have a working key to copy, how many keys you want, any bench work needed, and time and distance. We confirm coverage for your car before we quote, so you aren't surprised.
