Why does a gate lock fail so often in Palmdale?
A gate lock lives a harder life than a front-door lock. It sits outside all year, nobody shelters it, and people slam the gate without thinking about it. In the Antelope Valley that exposure is worse than usual. Summers are very hot, winter nights drop below freezing, and the wind carries dust and fine grit that works its way into every moving part.
That swing between hot days and freezing nights makes metal gates, posts and frames move a little with the seasons. A latch that lined up perfectly in October can sit a quarter inch off by July. The bolt starts to drag on the strike, you have to lift or push the gate to get it to catch, and eventually it just stops catching. Meanwhile the grit grinds inside the latch body and the keyway, so the lock gets stiff, the key gets harder to turn, and keypad buttons start to stick.
Most people call us about one of a few things: the gate won't lock, the gate won't stay shut in the wind, the key turns but nothing happens, the keypad has stopped responding, or the lock has been forced and the gate no longer closes properly. All of these are common, and most can be sorted out on site.
What kinds of gate locks do we repair and replace?
Gate hardware comes in a lot of forms, and the right fix depends on which one you have. We work on pedestrian gates and driveway gates, in metal, wood and vinyl, at single-family homes, duplexes, apartment properties and small commercial yards.
- Side gate lock and latch sets: the everyday latch on the walkway between the front and back yard, with or without a key cylinder.
- Gate latch repair: gravity latches, thumb latches, lever latches and spring latches that have gone loose, sticky or misaligned.
- Gate deadbolts and keyed gate locks: heavier outdoor locks that bolt into the gate frame or a post.
- Keypad gate lock and electronic gate lock hardware: mechanical combination keypads and powered keypad locks that open with a code.
- Smart gate lock installation: app-connected or code-based locks suited to outdoor use, where the gate and the environment allow it.
- Driveway gate locking hardware: the lock, latch, strike or magnetic lock on a swing or slide gate, as distinct from the motor that moves it.
- Weather-resistant gate lock replacements: outdoor-rated hardware chosen to cope with heat, cold and blowing dust.
- Pedestrian gates at multi-unit properties: the walk-through gate to a courtyard, stairwell or pool area, where many people share one lock.

Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a gate lock repair, step by step
The job is usually simple once someone looks at the gate in person. What matters is diagnosing the real cause rather than swapping parts and hoping. Here is the usual order of work.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what the gate is doing: not latching, not locking, key won't turn, keypad dead, or damaged. A photo of the lock helps, but it is not required.
- We ask what kind of gate it is, what it is made of, whether it swings or slides, and whether anything electric is connected to it, so we bring the right hardware in the van.
- On site, we check the gate before touching the lock. We look at hinges, post movement and whether the gate sags, because a misaligned gate will wreck a new lock just as fast as the old one.
- We test the lock itself: latch action, bolt throw, strike alignment, cylinder, keypad or power supply if there is one. Then we tell you plainly what we found.
- We explain your options, repair or replace, and what each involves, before we start work. You decide.
- We do the work: clean and adjust, re-align the strike, re-key or replace the cylinder, or install new weather-resistant hardware. If it is a keypad or electronic lock, we set the codes and test them with you.
- We test the gate several times in the way it is actually used, including a firm closing and a gentle one, so you are not left with a lock that only works when you are standing next to it.
Should you repair the gate lock or replace it?
Repair is usually the more economical route when the lock is basically sound and the problem is alignment, grit, a worn spring or a tired cylinder. Many gate latches that seem dead only need cleaning, adjusting the strike, or shifting the latch a fraction of an inch to match where the gate now rests.
Replacement makes more sense when the hardware is rusted through, the latch body is cracked, the lock has been forced or kicked, parts are no longer available, or the same fix keeps coming back. It also makes sense if the lock was never meant for outdoor use. Interior-grade locks installed on exterior gates are a regular find, and they simply do not last in a high-desert climate.
If you want to change who can open the gate, for example after a tenant moves out, a contractor finishes work, or a key goes missing, you may not need new hardware at all. Re-keying the existing cylinder is often enough, and our lock rekey service explains how that works. For other broken door or lock hardware around the property, we can also look at general lock repair while we are there.

Call (213) 577-1366Keypad, electronic and smart gate lock installation
A lot of Palmdale callers want to stop carrying yet another key. A keypad gate lock lets family, a pool service or a dog walker in with a code, and you can change the code without handing out new keys. That convenience is real, but the product has to suit the gate.
For outdoor use we look at weather resistance first: sealed housings, a keypad that handles direct sun and blowing dust, and a finish that will not fade or crack in the heat. Battery-powered keypad locks are easy to fit on a side gate because they need no wiring, but someone has to remember to change the batteries, and cold nights can shorten battery life. Wired electronic gate locks, such as an electric strike or magnetic lock, need a proper power supply and a way to release from inside, and we plan that before we install anything.
Smart gate lock installation comes with extra questions: is there Wi-Fi reaching the gate, does the lock need to work if the network drops, and who gets access. We will tell you honestly when a smart lock is a good fit and when a simpler keypad or a keyed lock serves the gate better. For smart locks on doors, see our smart lock installation page, and for shared entries with many users or audit trails, our access control installation work is the better starting point.
What affects the cost of gate lock repair in Palmdale?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the same call can be very different from one gate to the next. What we can do is explain what moves the cost, so nothing surprises you when you phone.
- Repair or replacement: adjusting a latch or re-keying a cylinder is usually the lighter-cost option; new hardware costs more.
- The type of lock: a basic gate latch, a keyed gate deadbolt, a mechanical keypad and a powered electronic lock sit in very different ranges.
- Gate material and condition: a gate that has sagged, warped or rusted may need alignment work before any lock will hold.
- Electrical work: powered locks need a power source, wiring and a safe release method, which adds time and parts.
- Hardware grade: weather-resistant outdoor hardware built for heat, cold and dust costs more up front and usually lasts longer.
- Quantity: several gates or a shared pedestrian gate with a keying plan takes more planning than one side gate.
- Time of day and location: after-hours calls and the travel to your address are part of the picture, and we will tell you how they apply when you phone.

Call (213) 577-1366Gate lock service across Palmdale neighborhoods and ZIP codes
We take calls from all three Palmdale ZIP codes, 93550, 93551 and 93552, and from the neighborhoods around them. Gate problems look a little different depending on the kind of property.
In west Palmdale, much of the housing grew quickly from the late 1980s through the 2000s, with large stucco tract homes around Rancho Vista and the Antelope Valley Country Club area. Wherever those homes have a side gate or a back-yard gate, we see the same story: the latch was an ordinary builder-grade piece, years of sun and wind have worn it, and the family now wants something sturdier or keypad-controlled. Anaverde is a newer master-planned community in the southwest hills, and newer gates there may still be fine mechanically, so calls are often about changing a lock for convenience or re-keying after a move. If you are shut out at the gate or the house itself, our house lockout service covers that side of the problem.
East Palmdale holds the older 1950s to 1980s housing tied to the aerospace industry. Older yards often have older gate hardware, with a thumb latch or hasp that has been patched more than once, and posts that have shifted over the decades. There, the fix is frequently a combination of realigning the gate and fitting a modern, weather-resistant latch.
Apartment and duplex stock concentrates along Palmdale Boulevard and the eastside avenues. That brings in a scenario we handle often: a pedestrian gate to a courtyard or parking area that many tenants share, where the lock is worn out or a key has gone missing. Rekeying that gate keeps old keys from working without replacing the whole latch. Landlords and managers can find more on our locksmith for landlords page.
We also reach nearby areas such as Joshua Hills, Barrel Springs, Desert View Highlands and Sun Village, which are around the city. Tell us the address when you call and we will confirm we can come.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a gated property?
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that come out to you. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us directly, and the technician who arrives works for the same company, not for a dispatch middleman who sells your call to whoever is closest.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on a gate job, where the temptation is to sell a new lock when a realignment would do, or to put in an indoor lock that fails by next summer. We would rather tell you what the gate actually needs.
Palmdale is about 59 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we say so plainly. It is part of why we ask good questions on the phone: what gate it is, what the lock is doing, and what you have on hand, so the van arrives with the right parts. Our mobile locksmith service works exactly that way, and we answer around the clock, every day of the year.

Call (213) 577-1366Where our work stops, and how to check any locksmith
Honesty about limits saves you money. We repair and replace gate locks, latches, strikes, keypads and the locking side of electric gate hardware. If your driveway gate's motor, operator, control board or remote has failed, that is usually the work of a gate-operator company. We can look at the lock and latch end and tell you whether the trouble is there or elsewhere, and we will say so when it is elsewhere.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, issued through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith who comes to your gate for it, and check it yourself before work starts. That is good advice no matter who you call.
If you need a whole door lock replaced as well, our lock replacement page covers the house side.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my gate lock even though the key still turns?
Usually the latch and the strike no longer line up. Seasonal movement in the gate or post, a sagging hinge, or grit in the latch body means the bolt turns but never lands in the catch. We check alignment first, then clean or replace the latch.
Can you install a keypad gate lock on my side gate?
Yes, in most cases. Battery keypad locks are the simplest for a side gate because they need no wiring. We check the gate material, the latch position and the weather exposure, and we choose an outdoor-rated lock that suits it.
Is a smart gate lock a good idea in the Palmdale heat and wind?
It can be, if the hardware is made for outdoor use. Heat, freezing nights and blowing dust are hard on cheap electronics. We recommend sealed, weather-resistant models and tell you honestly if a plain keypad or a keyed lock is the better choice.
Do you repair driveway gate locks as well as pedestrian gates?
Yes. We handle the locks, latches, strikes, keypads and magnetic locks on swing and slide driveway gates. If the problem turns out to be the gate motor or control board, we will say so and point you toward a gate-operator company.
Can you re-key a shared gate at my apartment or duplex property?
Yes. Re-keying the existing lock means old keys stop working and new keys are issued, usually without replacing the whole latch. It is often the more economical way to deal with lost or unreturned keys on a shared pedestrian gate.
How much does gate lock repair cost?
It depends on the lock type, the gate's condition, whether it is a repair or a replacement, and whether power or wiring is involved. We do not post prices online, but when you call (213) 577-1366 we explain what applies to your gate before work begins.
Will you come out at night or on weekends for a gate that won't lock?
Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366. A gate that won't latch or lock leaves your property open, so after-hours calls are normal for us.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate before they work on my gate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number, ask who is actually coming to your address, and be wary of anyone who will not answer plainly. You are entitled to know before work starts.
