What do Honda owners in Palmdale usually need?

Palmdale is a driving town. The Antelope Valley is spread out, so most days a Honda is parked somewhere: the lots at the Antelope Valley Mall, a job near Air Force Plant 42, a visit to Palmdale Regional Medical Center, or the park-and-ride at the Palmdale Transportation Center while the owner rides Metrolink. Those are the places where a key problem stops being an annoyance and becomes a stuck-in-a-parking-lot problem, and the Antelope Valley's very hot summers make that a bad place to wait around.

The Honda calls we hear about fall into a handful of groups, and they line up with the problems this brand is known for:

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas, where the key sticks, needs jiggling, or eventually stops turning
  • Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs (through 2000 and 2001) where any hardware-store copy will start the car, which is also why those years are theft targets
  • Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models
  • Dead smart-fob batteries, where the dash says 'key not detected' even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder that open the doors but will not start the engine
  • Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips that work, then fail intermittently
  • A flashing green key (immobilizer) light, which points to an antenna-ring or chip fault

What does the housing around Palmdale have to do with car keys?

More than you would think. East Palmdale has the older 1950s-1980s housing tied to the aerospace industry, and apartments and duplexes concentrate along Palmdale Boulevard and the eastside avenues. West Palmdale grew quickly from the late 1980s through the 2000s with large stucco tract homes. In all of these, the car key often lives on the same ring as the house key. Lose that ring and you have two problems at once.

We can handle both from one call if you need it. Our Palmdale locksmith page covers the home and apartment side, and this page stays with the Honda.

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

We run mobile service vans alongside our Westwood storefront, so the work happens where your Honda is parked: your driveway, an apartment lot, the mall, or the transportation center. Here is the usual order of a job.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and trim, whether the car uses a turn-key ignition or a push-button start, and where it is parked.
  2. We work out which key type your car uses and whether you have a working key or none. For the newest model years, we confirm that current tools cover your car before we quote.
  3. We verify that the car is yours. Expect to show ID and ownership paperwork such as a registration or title.
  4. If you are locked out, we open the car first without damaging the door or window. Our car lockout service in Palmdale covers that on its own.
  5. We cut the key, either by code or from the lock itself, and prepare the transponder or smart key.
  6. We program the key to the car through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. On models with Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory, we match the key to the correct memory slot.
  7. We test every key: it starts the car, locks and unlocks the doors, and the remote buttons work. If the fob needs a new battery or shell, we deal with that at the same visit.

Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Honda brought in immobilizers model by model rather than all at once, so the era depends on your specific car, not just the brand. Here is the general picture. We verify the exact year for your model, ideally by VIN, before cutting anything.

One caution: European-market catalogs list different chips for several late-1990s and early-2000s models. US cars follow the eras below, so a part number from an overseas listing will not necessarily fit your car.

  • Plain mechanical keys: several US Hondas kept them into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. There is no chip, so the key is cut and nothing is programmed.
  • First chip era (Megamos 13, a fixed-code chip): Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004, Pilot 2003-2004.
  • Philips ID46 / Hitag 2 chip: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
  • Honda G chip (ID47 / Hitag 3): starts with the 2013 Accord and spreads through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
  • Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's next redesign after that.
  • Newest platform (Hitag AES '4A' fobs): Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

What if you have lost every Honda key?

All-keys-lost is the situation most people dread, but Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer. Honda also does not generally require special NASTF credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In plain terms, for most Hondas a new key does not mean a tow to the dealer.

There are honest exceptions, and you should hear them before you hire anyone:

  • On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU. That can take longer and change the cost.
  • On the Hitag-AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V/Pilot/HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can still be dealer-only until tool support catches up.
  • Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory keys on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims have to be matched to the right slot, or seat and mirror settings will not follow the key.

If your Honda falls in the dealer-only category

We would rather tell you that on the phone than after a van drives out to you. If your car is a brand-new model year where tools are not there yet, we will say so and point you toward the dealer. For our full overview of the brand, see Honda car keys, and for the wider picture across makes, see car keys by make.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Palmdale?

We do not publish flat numbers on a web page, because a Honda key is not one product. Two Hondas in the same parking lot can need very different work. Here is what moves the cost:

  • Key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a push-button smart key are very different parts with different programming.
  • Whether you still have a working key: copying or adding a key from an existing one is usually the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost.
  • Model year: older cars may need extended procedures or bench work; the newest platform may need tools that are only just reaching the aftermarket.
  • Whether a lockout comes first: getting into the car is its own step before any key work.
  • Number of keys: ordering two keys in one visit usually makes more sense than a second trip later.
  • Memory settings: matching Driver 1 / Driver 2 keys takes extra care.
  • Condition of the old parts: a cracked shell, worn buttons or a dying fob battery can sometimes be repaired or swapped rather than replaced outright. See our key fob replacement in Palmdale page for that route.
  • Location and hour: Palmdale is about 59 miles from our Westwood storefront, and a call in the middle of the night is not the same as a call at noon.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is the better fit?

Both are legitimate, and which one is better depends on your situation. A dealer can be the right call for a brand-new model year that aftermarket tools do not yet cover, or for someone who wants factory-branded parts and does not mind arranging the visit.

A mobile locksmith makes sense when the car is somewhere inconvenient, when you cannot easily bring it in, or when you need a key now. If every key is gone, getting the car to a dealer can mean arranging a tow first. For most Hondas we can come to the car and finish at the curb.

If you are not sure which side your car falls on, call and ask. We will tell you honestly, even if that means the answer is the dealer. For the general process across makes, see our overview of car key replacement in Palmdale, and for the lost-key situation specifically, lost car key replacement.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda?

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987 and serves 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Palmdale among them. We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, with mobile vans out on the road. When you call, you reach our company, not a call center passing your job to whoever bids. There are no dispatch middlemen between you and the person who shows up.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, which matters when a key problem happens at the end of a long evening in a parking lot.

Honda key help across Palmdale neighborhoods

We work across the city's three ZIP codes, 93550, 93551 and 93552. That includes Rancho Vista and Anaverde, Joshua Hills and Barrel Springs, the Antelope Valley Country Club Estates, West Palmdale and East Palmdale, and the Civic Center area around Poncitlán Square. We also go to nearby unincorporated Sun Village and Desert View Highlands.

Scenarios differ by area. In the larger stucco-home areas of west Palmdale and in newer Anaverde, the usual call is a Honda in the driveway with a lost or broken key, and a family that wants a spare made while we are there. On the eastside, around Palmdale Boulevard, it is often an apartment or duplex lot, where a key gets lost on a shared ring. At the Antelope Valley Mall and the Palmdale Transportation Center park-and-ride, it is usually a lockout or a key that fell out of a pocket on the way to work.

The high-desert climate is hard on locks and hardware. It brings very hot summers, freezing winter nights, strong dusty winds, and large temperature swings that make door frames move. If you are already feeling a key stick in the ignition, treat that as a warning and have a spare made while the original still works.

Ask any locksmith for their BSIS license

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that number before they start work on your car, and check it. Also be wary of anyone who cannot explain what your specific Honda needs. If you want to talk it through first, you can reach us through our contact page or by phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Honda key in Palmdale if I have lost all of them?

In most cases, yes. Hondas program through the OBD-II port and usually need no manufacturer PIN code. The exceptions are the earliest Megamos-13 cars (roughly 1998-2004), which can need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest 4A-platform model years, which can be dealer-only. We confirm which applies to your car before we quote.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?

Only if your car is one of the older pre-immobilizer models, such as a Civic through 2000 or a CR-V through 2001. On anything with a transponder chip, a copy without a programmed chip will open the doors but will not start the engine.

Do I need a PIN code from Honda?

On most models, no. Our professional equipment programs through the OBD-II port without a manufacturer PIN. If your specific car turns out to need something different, we say so before starting.

My Honda says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?

Often it is just a dead battery in a smart fob. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob itself or the car's antenna may be at fault, and we can diagnose it on site.

What does the flashing green key light mean?

It is the immobilizer light, and flashing usually points to a chip fault or an antenna-ring problem rather than a bad battery. We can check whether the key, the chip or the car is the cause.

Do you handle the newest Honda models?

Usually, but not always. On the newest platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), add-a-key was covered before all-keys-lost. Current professional tools cover most of these cars, but the newest model years can be dealer-only. We confirm coverage before quoting.

What do you need from me to make a key?

Proof that the car is yours: ID, plus a registration or title. We will also ask for the year, model and trim, and the VIN helps us confirm the right key type.

What are Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys?

On some Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims, each key is linked to a driver memory setting. When we program a new key, we match it to the correct slot so the car's saved settings follow it.

Can you come to me at night or on a weekend in Palmdale?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366, and our vans cover Palmdale and the rest of our service area.
