What do Honda owners in Oxnard usually need?
Most Honda calls come down to a short list: every key is lost, a copied key opens the doors but won't start the engine, a smart fob has quit, or the shell of a remote-head key has cracked and the buttons no longer work. Hondas are everywhere, and in Oxnard they get parked in very different places, which shapes where the trouble happens.
Around Oxnard College and along Saviers Road, apartment living means shared lots and street parking. A key dropped between the car and the building, or left in a jacket at a friend's place, turns into a lockout or an all-keys-lost job fast. Near Channel Islands Harbor, Seabridge and Mandalay Bay, cars sit by dock gates, HOA gates and beach-house driveways, and a key that goes missing near the water is rarely found again. In RiverPark and around The Collection at RiverPark, it is the shopping-lot version: a fob left in a bag, or a key locked inside while the groceries go in the trunk. Downtown, along A Street, it is often someone who works nearby and parks all day.
Whatever the spot, the first question is the same: what kind of Honda key does this car use, and do you still have one that works? Everything else follows from the answer.
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
You do not need to tow the car or arrange a ride. We bring the equipment to wherever the Honda is parked, in a driveway, an apartment lot, a harbor-side space or a shopping center. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour. Give us the model, the year, where the car is, and whether any working key exists.
- We work out what your car actually uses: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key or a smart proximity key. For the newest model years we confirm tool coverage before we quote, rather than promise and find out later.
- Our van arrives at the car. We ask for ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration, before cutting or programming anything.
- If you are locked out, we get the door open first. If you only need a lockout, see our Oxnard car lockout service.
- We cut the key, by code or from the lock depending on what the situation allows, and program it to the car through the OBD-II port.
- On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory, we match each key to the correct memory slot so seat and mirror settings follow the right driver.
- We test everything before we leave: starting the engine, the door locks, the remote buttons and any spare key you ordered.

Call (213) 577-1366Honda key eras in plain terms
Honda did not switch to chip keys all at once. The change happened model by model, so the year of your specific model matters more than the brand in general. Here is the overall pattern, and we verify the exact year for your car by VIN or in person.
- Plain mechanical keys: several Hondas kept them into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Any hardware-store copy starts these cars, which is a main reason those years still show up on theft lists.
- First chip era: a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13 on the Accord from 1998 to 2002, Odyssey 1999 to 2004, Civic 2001 to 2005, CR-V 2002 to 2004 and Pilot 2003 to 2004.
- Second chip era: the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip, starting with the 2003 Accord, then the CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, the Ridgeline and Civic in 2006, and the Fit in 2009.
- Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3): beginning with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014 to 2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
What if I have lost every Honda key?
All-keys-lost is more manageable on a Honda than on many brands. Every immobilizer era can be programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer. Honda also does not generally require special credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. So for a lot of Hondas, this is a single visit at the car.
There are honest exceptions. On the earliest Megamos 13 cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures, and a few need bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That takes longer and can change the plan.
The other exception is the newest platform, the Hitag AES 4A group: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. Aftermarket tool support for all-keys-lost arrived later than support for adding a key to a car that already has one. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the very newest model years can still be dealer-only until the tools catch up. If yours is one of them, we will tell you on the phone or at the car instead of starting a job we cannot finish.

Call (213) 577-1366Dead fob, sticky ignition or a copy that won't start the car
Not every Honda key problem is a lost key. A few patterns come up again and again, and some cost far less to fix than a full replacement.
- The dash says 'key not detected' on a smart Honda. Often the fob battery is dead. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door, and a fresh battery may be all you need. If the message persists, the fob may need attention. See key fob replacement in Oxnard.
- The key sticks, needs jiggling or stops turning. On 1996 to 2014 Hondas this is commonly worn ignition lock wafers. Replace the worn part before it fails completely, because forcing a key can snap it in the lock.
- A copy opens the doors but the engine will not start. It was probably cut without a transponder chip. It fits the lock but never talks to the immobilizer.
- A cloned or low-quality aftermarket chip works sometimes and fails sometimes. Intermittent starting is a classic sign.
- A flashing green key light points to an immobilizer fault, such as an antenna-ring or chip problem. It may not be the key at all.
- The shell has cracked, the keyring hole has broken, or the buttons are worn on a 2005 to 2015 key. Often the chip and electronics can be moved into a new shell, depending on the key.
What affects the cost of a Honda key in Oxnard?
We do not publish numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car and your situation. Here is what moves the cost up or down, so you can judge any quote you get, ours included.
- Type of key: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity fob are very different products.
- Model and year: the platform decides the chip, the tools and the programming steps.
- Add-a-key or all-keys-lost: adding a key when you already have a working one is usually the more economical route. Starting from zero keys takes more work.
- Difficult cases: early Megamos 13 cars needing extended procedures or bench work, and the newest 4A models where tool coverage is thin.
- Driver memory matching on trims that have it.
- Number of keys: a spare cut and programmed during the same visit is generally more economical than coming back later.
- Distance and timing: Oxnard is about 58 miles from our Westwood storefront, and travel and after-hours calls factor into the quote.
- Whether you also need a lockout opened, a shell replaced or a worn ignition repaired.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense?
Both can be the right call, and the answer depends on the car.
A dealer is a reasonable choice for the newest Hondas where aftermarket tool support has not caught up, since in those cases the dealer may be the only option. It also makes sense if you want everything handled through the manufacturer for your own reasons. The tradeoff is logistics: the car has to get there, which for an all-keys-lost situation usually means arranging a tow, and then planning around the dealer's schedule.
A mobile locksmith makes sense for the large majority of Hondas, since almost every immobilizer era can be handled through the OBD-II port. We come to you, we can open the door and program the key in the same visit, and nothing has to be towed. If your car falls into the dealer-only group, we will say so honestly, and you will not pay for a trip that goes nowhere.
Compare the full quote either way: key, programming, any lockout or ignition work, and travel.

Honda key service across Oxnard neighborhoods and ZIP codes
We serve the whole city, including ZIP codes 93030, 93033, 93035 and 93036. That covers Downtown Oxnard, La Colonia, RiverPark, Seabridge, Mandalay Bay, Oxnard Shores, the Channel Islands Harbor area, Via Marina, Marina West, Mar Vista, Carriage Square and Sierra Linda.
Oxnard's housing varies a lot: early-1900s bungalows in the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District near downtown, broad postwar single-family tracts, and the 2000s master-planned RiverPark community. Waterfront areas like Mandalay Bay, Seabridge and the harbor mix beach houses and condos, many with private docks and HOA gates. There is also a lot of apartment housing. For a Honda owner, that means the car might be in a garage, on a gated street, in an apartment lot or at the curb, and we plan the visit around where it is.
The city sits directly on the coast, with a persistent marine layer, cool damp mornings and salt-laden air. That air is hard on exterior hardware, so locks, deadbolts and gate hardware near the beach and harbor corrode faster than they do inland. We mention it because many people carry car keys on the same ring as a home, dock or gate key. If a gate or door lock at Oxnard Shores, Mandalay Bay or Seabridge is sticking while the Honda key is being replaced, tell us. It is a separate job, and we handle both.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Honda key if I have lost all of them?
For most Hondas, yes. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port, and most models need no manufacturer PIN. Early Megamos 13 cars (roughly 1998 to 2004) can need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest model years can be dealer-only. We confirm which applies to your car before quoting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?
Only if the car predates the chip era, such as a Civic through 2000 or a CR-V through 2001. On chip-equipped Hondas, a plain copy may open the doors but will not start the engine, because it was cut without a transponder.
My smart Honda says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade in the fob still opens the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, call us and we will find out whether it is the fob or the car.
Do you need a PIN code from Honda to program a key?
On most models, no manufacturer PIN is required. We program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. The exceptions are early Megamos 13 cars that may need extended procedures and the newest 4A models, where we confirm coverage first.
Can you do keys for a 2023 CR-V or a newer Civic or Accord?
Often, but not always. The Hitag AES 4A platform, meaning Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022 and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023, got aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage later than add-a-key. Current tools cover most of them, but the newest years can be dealer-only, and we say so before you pay for anything.
What is the flashing green key light on my Honda dash?
It is the immobilizer light, and a flashing one can point to an antenna-ring or chip fault rather than a bad key. We check the system at your car so you do not replace a key that was never the problem.
Do you come to the harbor, RiverPark and the beach areas?
Yes. We are mobile and cover all of Oxnard, including Channel Islands Harbor, Seabridge, Mandalay Bay, Oxnard Shores, RiverPark and Downtown, across ZIP codes 93030, 93033, 93035 and 93036. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where the car is parked.
How much does a Honda key cost?
It depends on the key type, the model year, whether you are adding a key or starting from none, any bench work or lockout needed, the number of keys, and travel and time of day. We explain the factors and give you the full quote before work starts.
Do I have to prove the car is mine?
Yes. We ask for ID and proof of ownership, such as registration, before cutting or programming a key. It protects you, and it is a normal part of honest locksmith work.
