What do Kia owners in North Hills usually need?

Most Kia calls from North Hills come down to four things: a lost key, a key locked inside the car, a smart fob that has stopped working, or an ignition damaged in a theft attempt. The neighborhood shapes where these happen. North Hills is mostly 1950s ranch tracts, split in two by the 405, with apartment clusters along Parthenia Street and Sepulveda Boulevard and gated townhome and condo communities in North Hills West.

Apartment living is where lockouts show up. You step out to move the car, the door shuts with the key on the seat, and the spare is upstairs. That is the classic Sepulveda Boulevard corridor lockout, and it often turns into a key question: if the spare is lost or the fob is cracked, it makes sense to solve both in one visit. Our car lockout service in North Hills covers the door. This page covers the key itself.

In the ranch-tract streets the story is usually wear. A Kia with years behind it can develop worn ignition lock wafers, and the key starts to stick or will not turn. Flip-key hinges crack, shells split, and buttons wear smooth. Most of these can be sorted where the car is parked, and we tell you up front when one cannot.

How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?

We bring the tools to the car, whether it is parked on a North Hills East street, in an apartment lot, or near the VA Sepulveda campus. Here is the usual order of work.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the model, the year, and what you still have: a working key, a spare, a dead fob, or nothing.
  2. We pin down the key system from the VIN, because Kia changeovers differ by model year, trim, and VIN. Guessing from the model name alone is how people end up with the wrong fob.
  3. We confirm you own the car with your registration or title and a photo ID.
  4. If the car has no immobilizer, we cut the key. If it has one, we cut the blade and program the key through the OBD-II port.
  5. We program the keyless remote or smart key where one is fitted, then test everything: starting, locking, every button, and the hidden emergency blade on a smart key.

Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Kia's US key history has three arcs, and which one your car falls into decides most of what the job involves.

  • Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. That means Texas 4D-60 on some 2001-2006 models, then Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
  • Most 2011-2021 turn-key cars, and some 2022: no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts these cars.
  • Push-button trims: always a full immobilizer. ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s, Hitag 3 / ID47 roughly 2016-2020, then NXP Hitag-AES '4A' and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems on 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5, and Forte BD.
  • 2022 and later: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, but at least one published 2023 spec sheet (Sportage LX) still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. We verify by year and VIN instead of assuming.

How are Kia keys programmed?

Programming follows the era. A no-immobilizer Kia needs no transponder programming at all. Only the keyless-entry remote, where fitted, needs OBD programming. Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment, while others need a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, through a dealer/KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access.

The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES and DST-AES smart systems are supported by current pro tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. Tell us your year and trim and we will say what we know and what we still need to check. Our Kia key page has the wider picture.

Why is my Kia key not working?

A few problems come up again and again, and each has a different fix:

  • The key sticks or will not turn: worn ignition lock wafers on a high-mileage car. A new key alone may not solve it if the lock itself is worn.
  • Broken flip-key hinge, cracked shell, or worn buttons: the key may still work mechanically, so we look at what is actually failing before suggesting a full replacement.
  • 'Key not detected' on a smart-key Kia: often a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you may be less stuck than it feels.
  • A hardware-store copy that will not start the car: those start no-immobilizer Kias fine, but they will not start an immobilizer-equipped car without programming.
  • Intermittent starting or remote trouble: low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs can fail on and off, which is maddening to diagnose.
  • For fob-specific work, see our key fob replacement in North Hills page.

What if my Kia was hit in a theft attempt?

Many turn-key Kias from 2011 to 2022 were targeted in the theft wave often called the 'Kia Boys' trend. The typical damage is a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock. A stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, and then a key that matches it.

You may have heard that Kia's anti-theft software update solves this. That update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed. Whether or not your car has had the update, give us the year and VIN and we will work from that.

What if I have lost every Kia key?

All keys lost is workable, but it is the job where honesty matters most. On a no-immobilizer Kia it is the simpler case: we cut a new key, the car starts, and only a keyless remote, if you have one, needs OBD programming. On an immobilizer car, a new key has to be programmed to the car, and some models need a Kia PIN first.

For 2019-and-newer smart-key cars, current pro tools handle most all-keys-lost work, but 'most' is the operative word. PIN and server requirements vary, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. If your Kia falls outside what can be done at the curb, we will say so plainly and explain the dealer route. More on the process is on our lost car key replacement in North Hills page.

What affects the cost of a Kia key?

We do not post numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the price:

  • Key era: a plain cut key for a no-immobilizer Kia is usually the more economical route, while a Hitag-AES or DST-AES smart key sits at the other end.
  • Key type: plain blade, flip key with remote, or push-button smart key.
  • Add-a-key versus all keys lost: having a working key makes the job simpler.
  • PIN or server access: whether the car needs a Kia PIN from the VIN, a dealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access.
  • Damage: a worn or destroyed ignition lock adds lock work on top of the key.
  • Remote programming: whether the keyless remote needs OBD programming too.
  • When and where: the hour of the call and the distance. North Hills is about 15 miles from our Westwood storefront.
  • Give us the year, model, and what you have, and we will walk through what applies to your car before any work begins.

Should I go to a Kia dealer or call a mobile locksmith?

Both are legitimate, and the right one depends on your car. A mobile locksmith comes to you, which matters when the car will not start or you cannot drive it. For many Kias, including no-immobilizer cars, many 2010s immobilizer models, and the 2019+ smart systems supported by current pro tools, that is all you need.

The dealer can be the right call in some cases: a very new facelift year where PIN or server access cannot be confirmed, or a car where we find at the curb that we cannot complete the programming. We would rather say so up front than start work we cannot finish. If you do go to the dealer, a car that will not run needs some way to get there, which is worth weighing.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. We are one company, with no dispatch middlemen between your call and the technician. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Whoever you hire, remember that California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before work starts. See all our car key replacement services in North Hills, or use the contact page.

Kia key service around North Hills and ZIP 91343

North Hills sits in ZIP 91343, and the 405 splits it into North Hills West and North Hills East. Our vans cover both halves, along with the Sepulveda Boulevard, Parthenia Street, and Nordhoff Street corridors. If you are stuck at work along the Nordhoff business strips, we can come to you there.

Tell us where the car is. A spot near the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library, James Monroe High School, North Hills Community Park, or the I-405/Nordhoff Street interchange is easy to find. A gated townhome community in North Hills West just needs gate access sorted when you call. Valley summers run hot, so a lockout is not something to sit through. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Kia key if I have lost all of them?

Yes, in most cases. No-immobilizer Kias are the simplest. Immobilizer cars need a new key programmed, and some need a Kia PIN. The newest facelift years are confirmed per job by VIN, and we tell you if yours is a dealer-only case.

Does my Kia need a programmed key at all?

Not always. Most 2011-2021 turn-key Kias, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. Push-button trims always have full immobilizers. We confirm by year and VIN.

Do you come out at night and on weekends in North Hills?

Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve North Hills.

Will a hardware-store copy work on my Kia?

It will start a no-immobilizer Kia. It will not start an immobilizer-equipped car without programming. Cheap cloned chips and fobs can also fail intermittently, so we check which system you have first.

Does Kia's anti-theft software update change my key?

No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how keys are cut or programmed.

My Kia says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, call us and we will look at the fob itself.

What should I have ready when I call?

The year, model, and VIN if you can see it, plus what keys you still have. On site we will ask for your registration or title and a photo ID.
