What do Honda owners in North Hills usually need?
Most Honda key calls in North Hills fall into a handful of patterns, and where you live in the neighborhood shapes which one you get. Honda is one of the easier makes for a locksmith to work on, so the trouble is rarely the car itself. It is usually the situation around the car: a shared lot, a gate, a work shift, or a spare key that was never made.
Along the Sepulveda Boulevard and Parthenia Street corridors, apartment clusters mean a lot of cars parked in shared lots and on nearby streets. A key problem in that setting tends to show up on the way out the door, with the only key lost, or sitting on the seat of a locked car. In North Hills West, the gated townhome and condo communities add a wrinkle. We may need a resident or the community's access arrangement to get the van to your car, so tell us on the phone if there is a gate code or a call box.
In the 1950s ranch tracts on both sides of the 405, the story is different. It is more often a worn key, an ignition that sticks, or one lone key on a ring that finally cracks. Along the Nordhoff Street business strips, it is usually a workday problem: a key lost or locked in a car in a business lot while you have somewhere to be.
If you are only locked out and the key is inside the car, that is a different job from replacing a key. Our North Hills car lockout service covers it. For key work, these are the Honda problems we see most often:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas, where the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning
- Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs (through 2000-2001) that any hardware-store copy will start
- Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models
- Dead smart-fob batteries, with the dash reporting 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder that open the doors but will not start the engine
- Cloned or aftermarket chips of low quality that fail intermittently
- A flashing green key (immobilizer) light from antenna-ring or chip faults
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
We bring the shop to the car. Our vans carry cutting and programming equipment, so a typical Honda key job does not involve towing the car anywhere. The work happens in your apartment lot, on your street, or in a business parking area. Here is how a call goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and trim, how many working keys you have (none, one, or a fob that has stopped working), and where the car is parked. If there is a gate or a parking permit rule, mention it now.
- We work out which key type your Honda uses from the year and model. On the newest model years we confirm tool coverage before we quote, because that is where surprises can happen.
- A technician drives out in a mobile van. Before we make or program anything, we ask you to show that the car is yours, usually with ID and registration or other proof of ownership.
- We cut the key blade and program the key through the car's OBD-II port with professional equipment. Programming a new key is done electronically at the car.
- We test everything before we call it done: the door lock, the ignition or push-button start, the remote buttons, and a full start of the engine.
- If you only had one key, we will tell you plainly that a spare is worth making while we are already there, since adding a key is a lighter job than starting from zero later.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Honda did not move to chip keys all at once. It added immobilizers model by model, so the key era depends on your exact model and year. Here is the general picture:
- Plain mechanical keys: several Hondas kept ordinary keys into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Any copy starts them, which is a main reason those years still top theft lists.
- First chip era, a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13: Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
- Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: Accord 2003, then CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, Ridgeline and Civic in 2006, and Fit in 2009.
- Honda G chip (ID47/Hitag 3): it starts with the 2013 Accord and spreads through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's following redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs, found on the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still use ID47 smart keys through 2026.
Why the exact year matters more than the model name
Two Civics a few years apart can need completely different keys, different chips and different procedures. That is why the first thing we ask for is your year, and sometimes your VIN. We verify the era by year rather than guessing from the badge on the trunk.
If you have read online that your Honda uses some other chip, it may have come from a European-market catalog. Those list different chips, such as Megamos Crypto 48, for several late-1990s and early-2000s models. US cars follow the eras above, and when a listing is unclear or conflicts with what we know, we confirm by VIN or in person rather than assuming.
For more on the make as a whole, see our Honda key service overview, or the wider car keys section if you are comparing makes.
What if I have lost every Honda key?
Losing every key is stressful, but on a Honda it is usually a manageable job. Every Honda immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer. We can make a new key and program it at the car without towing it to a dealership.
There are some honest caveats, and we would rather you hear them now than halfway through the job:
- On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That takes longer than a simple key add.
- On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory-linked keys, each key has to be matched to the correct memory slot. We take care of that as part of programming.
- On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools, such as the Autel IM-series, cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before quoting.

Call (213) 577-1366Lost key versus all keys lost: why the difference matters
If you still have one working key, the job is usually simpler than starting from nothing. We can add a key from the working one, which is typically the more economical route. Once the last key is gone, the car has to be told to accept a brand-new key without an existing one to learn from, and that is where the caveats above come in.
So if you have one key and it is cracked, worn or acting up, do not wait until it fails completely. Call while it still works. If you are already at the point of having none, our page on lost car key replacement in North Hills walks through what to expect and what to have ready.
Dead fobs, sticking ignitions and copies that will not start the car
Not every key problem is a lost key. A few of the most common Honda issues are about a key that exists but is not doing its job.
If your smart key stops working and the dash says 'key not detected', the fob battery is a common reason, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. We can check the fob on the spot and tell you whether it needs a battery, repair, or replacement. If the fob itself is the issue, our North Hills key fob replacement service covers it.
A worn ignition is a different story. On 1996-2014 Hondas, worn lock wafers show up as a key that sticks, needs jiggling, or eventually stops turning. Replacing the key alone will not cure that if the cylinder is the worn part, and we will tell you which one it is rather than sell you a key you do not need.
Then there are hardware-store copies. A blade cut without a transponder will open the doors but will not start the engine, and cloned or low-quality aftermarket chips can work for weeks and then fail without warning. A flashing green key light can point to an antenna-ring or chip fault on the car side rather than a bad key. Diagnosing which side the fault is on is part of the job.
What affects the cost of a Honda key in North Hills?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost up or down:
- The key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity fob are very different products.
- The model year and which chip era it falls in, including whether the newest platform needs extra tool coverage.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key is generally the lighter-cost route, while all-keys-lost takes more work.
- Whether the job needs extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU, as on some 1998-2004 cars.
- Memory-linked Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys, which need to be matched to the right slot.
- How many keys and how many remote buttons you need.
- Whether you need the ignition or lock cylinder repaired as well as a key.
- Time of day and where the van has to travel. We run 24/7, and after-hours calls are a different load than a weekday morning.
- Whether the car turns out to be dealer-only for its model year, in which case we say so up front.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Honda?
Both are legitimate options, and which is better depends on the car. A dealer is the right call in a few situations, such as a very new model year where aftermarket tool support has not caught up. In those cases we will tell you honestly that it is dealer-only, rather than let you wait on us.
For most Hondas, though, a locksmith is the more practical route. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port, no manufacturer PIN code is needed on most models, and we come to you, so there is no tow and no day without the car. For older cars especially, a mobile visit is often the more economical way to handle it.
The best move is a short call. Give us the year, model and trim, and we will tell you whether we can do it, what it will involve, and whether a dealer is the better path for your particular car.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, and we work from a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, backed by mobile service vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us directly, and the call is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. We are one company, not a dispatch middleman passing your call to whoever picks up the job.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If the job is unusual, such as an older Megamos-13 all-keys-lost, he is the one who decides how to approach it.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. That applies to us too, so feel free to ask. You can reach us anytime through our contact page or by phone.
Honda key service across North Hills, ZIP 91343
North Hills, formerly known as Sepulveda, sits in the north-central San Fernando Valley and is split into two halves by the 405. We cover North Hills West and North Hills East, and the ZIP code is 91343. The neighborhood is about 15 miles from our Westwood storefront.
Along the Sepulveda Boulevard corridor and the Parthenia Street corridor, apartment clusters mean shared lots, and lockouts and lost keys are frequent. Along Nordhoff Street, we are called to the business strips for workday key problems. Around the VA Sepulveda campus area, the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library, James Monroe High School and North Hills Community Park, people end up parked away from home with no spare key. If you are near the I-405/Nordhoff Street interchange, tell us which side of the freeway you are on so we can route the van properly.
Summers are hot in this part of the valley, and doors and weatherstripping take seasonal heat expansion. There are no coastal corrosion factors here, so most key wear you see on a North Hills Honda comes from years of everyday use, not salt air.

Honda models in our key guide
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key without the original?
Yes, in most cases. Every Honda immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and most models do not need a manufacturer PIN code. Some 1998-2004 cars need extended procedures or bench work, and the very newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm which applies before quoting.
Do you come to me in North Hills, or do I need to bring the car in?
We come to you. Our mobile vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, so most Honda key jobs are done in your lot, on your street, or at your workplace. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where the car is parked, including any gate or access details.
My Honda starts with a copy from a hardware store sometimes, but not always. Why?
If a copy was cut without a transponder, it opens the doors but will not start the engine. If it starts only sometimes, it may have a low-quality cloned or aftermarket chip that fails intermittently. We can test it and replace it with a properly programmed key.
Is my older Civic or CR-V easy to steal?
Civics through 2000 and CR-Vs through 2001 had plain mechanical keys with no immobilizer, so any hardware-store copy starts them. That is a main reason those years still top theft lists. Keep track of every copy you have made, and call us if you want to talk through your options.
My Honda says 'key not detected'. Is the fob dead?
Often it is the battery in a smart fob. The hidden emergency blade will still open the door, but the car will not recognize the key to start. We can check the fob and tell you whether it needs a battery, repair, or full replacement.
Can you program a key for a 2023 or newer Honda?
It depends on the model. The Hitag AES 4A platform covers the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. Add-a-key coverage came first, and all-keys-lost coverage arrived later. Current tools cover most of them, but the newest years can be dealer-only, so we confirm coverage first.
What is Driver 1 and Driver 2 on my Odyssey, Accord or Pilot?
Some trims link each key to a memory slot. When we program a new key, it has to be matched to the correct slot. We handle that as part of the programming, so tell us if your car has memory settings tied to the key.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they begin work, and be cautious if they hesitate. You can also ask who will actually be doing the job and where the company is based. Ours is a Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
Will I need a dealer if I lose every key?
Usually not. Most Hondas can be handled by a locksmith at the car. The exceptions are mainly the very newest model years, which can be dealer-only until aftermarket tools catch up. We tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
