What does a lock rekey actually do?
Rekeying changes the inside of a lock so a different key operates it. A standard pin-tumbler cylinder holds a set of small pins that line up only for one key's cut pattern. During a rekey, we pull the cylinder, replace the pins with a new combination, and cut keys to match. Your old keys will still slide into the lock, but they will no longer turn it. The handle, the deadbolt body, the strike plate and the finish on your door all stay exactly as they were.
That is why a house rekey is one of the most practical steps you can take when a property changes hands. You are not paying for new hardware you do not need, and your door does not suddenly look different. What rekeying does not do is make a weak lock stronger. A rekeyed lock is exactly as sturdy as it was before; the only thing that changes is who holds a working key.
People search for this job under many names: rekey locks, lock rekeying, rekey service, home lock rekey, rekey door locks. They all describe the same work. In Montebello we do it for single-family houses, apartments and condos, and commercial doors, and our mobile vans carry the tools to do it at your door.
When should you rekey your locks?
The right moment is any time you cannot say with confidence who holds a working key to your door. Keys get copied, handed out and forgotten far more often than people realize. These are the situations we see most often:
- Rekey locks after moving: you have no idea how many copies the previous occupant, a landlord, a cleaner or a neighbor kept.
- Rekey locks after buying a house: sellers, agents, inspectors, contractors and lockbox visitors may all have had a key at some point. Most buyers rekey before the first night in the home.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out: tenant turnover rekey is standard practice for good reason, because a former tenant's keys should not open the next tenant's home.
- Rekey locks after losing keys: if a key went missing outside the house, especially on a ring with anything that points to your address, changing the pins closes that gap.
- After a roommate, partner, employee or contractor leaves and you would rather not rely on getting every key back.
- When you want to rekey all house locks to one key, so the front door, back door, side door and garage entry all work with a single key instead of a heavy ring.

Call (213) 577-1366How does a rekey work, step by step?
A rekey is a hands-on job with a clear sequence. Here is how it goes when you call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey in Montebello.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us how many locks you have, what kind they are (knobs, levers, deadbolts), and whether it is a house, an apartment or a business. A quick description of the brand or a photo of the hardware helps us bring the right parts.
- A technician arrives in a mobile van stocked with pinning kits and key blanks for common residential and commercial cylinders.
- We inspect each lock before touching it: does it turn smoothly, is the cylinder rekeyable, is anything worn, loose or damaged? If a lock is better replaced than rekeyed, we say so before any work begins.
- We remove each cylinder, clear the old pins, and re-pin it to a new key pattern.
- We reassemble the lock and test it with the new key several times. Then we try the old key to confirm it no longer turns.
- We cut the number of keys you need. If you want every door on one key, we pin those cylinders alike so a single key works across them.
- We explain what was done, hand over the keys, and talk through the cost of the work before we finish.
Should you rekey or replace the locks?
When the hardware is in good shape, rekeying is usually the more economical route, and it is almost always the faster one. You keep the locks you already chose and only change who can use them. It is the right call for newer deadbolts and handlesets, for quality hardware you like, and for any situation where the only real concern is old keys floating around.
Replacement makes more sense when the lock itself is the problem. If a key sticks or has to be wiggled, if the cylinder spins loosely, if the finish has failed, or if a deadbolt is short or flimsy, new pins will not fix that. The same applies if you want a different style or a stronger grade of lock. In those cases you are looking at a change-locks job or a full lock replacement rather than a rekey. And if a door has a handle but no deadbolt at all, that is a question for deadbolt installation, since there is nothing there to rekey.
We will tell you which way to go when we have the lock in hand. Sometimes the answer is a mix: rekey the good locks and replace the one that is worn out, so that everything ends up on the same key.

Call (213) 577-1366How much does lock rekeying cost in Montebello?
We do not post prices on a web page, because a rekey on one front-door deadbolt is a very different job from a rekey on every cylinder in a house or a row of business doors. What we can do is tell you plainly what moves the cost up or down:
- How many cylinders: each lock needs its own pins and its own testing, so a whole-house rekey is a larger job than a single deadbolt.
- The type and brand of lock: common residential cylinders are simple to pin, while restricted or high-security keyways take more care and sometimes special parts.
- Condition: a clean, well-kept lock rekeys easily. A worn or corroded one can take more work, and some are not worth rekeying at all.
- How many keys you want cut, and whether you want all locks keyed alike.
- Whether the job is residential or commercial, and whether it involves a single door or a larger system.
- The time of day. Our phone is answered around the clock, and after-hours visits are priced differently from a daytime appointment.
- Travel. Montebello is about 21 miles from our Westwood storefront, and our vans come to you, so distance is part of the picture.
Rekeying in Montebello: bungalows, postwar tracts and apartment corridors
Montebello's housing changes block by block, and that shapes what we find when we pull a cylinder. In the older southern and central streets, including South Montebello, there are 1920s Spanish-style bungalows. Many have had their hardware swapped over the years, but replacing worn mid-century locksets in older South Montebello bungalows is a regular part of the work. Those locks can still be rekeyed in some cases, but decades of use wear down springs and pins, so we test first and tell you honestly whether a rekey will hold up or whether a new set is the better move.
North of Whittier Boulevard, in North Montebello, home rekeys in postwar tracts are a steady job. These are larger ranch-style homes, and many still carry their original mid-century locksets. A whole-house rekey there usually means several cylinders: front door, back door, a side door, and the garage entry. Putting them on one key is a common request. Toward the Montebello Hills area, lots slope and driveways run longer, so tell us about gates, steps or access points when you call and we can plan around them.
Along the Garfield Avenue and Beverly Boulevard corridors, the housing is mostly condos and apartments. Rekeys there often come with a question of authority: we want to be sure the person asking is the owner, the property manager or the tenant with permission to change the cylinder. That keeps everyone on the right side of the lease.
Montebello's climate adds one wrinkle. Summers run hotter than coastal Los Angeles, and heat makes older wood doors swell. A deadbolt that binds on a warm afternoon and frees up in the evening is usually a door-fit problem, not a key problem. While we are rekeying, we check the bolt throw so you know whether new pins will be enough or whether the door itself is rubbing the hardware. Whether you are calling from a 90640 address in the hills or from a bungalow near the center of town, the process is the same: we come to you, inspect, and explain before we start.

Call (213) 577-1366Business and commercial lock rekey around Montebello
Commercial rekeying follows the same mechanics as a house rekey, but the stakes and the scale differ. Storefronts around The Shops at Montebello and along the Whittier Boulevard commercial strip see staff turnover, lease changes, ownership changes and lost keys like any business. A business lock rekey after an employee leaves, or when you take over a space and do not know who has keys, is a straightforward way to reset access without replacing every door.
Commercial setups are often more layered than homes. A shop may have a front door, a back door, a storeroom, an office and a roll-up gate, each with its own cylinder and sometimes its own keying logic. Some use panic hardware, some use higher-security cylinders, and some carry a key hierarchy where certain people can open everything. Whether a given commercial lock can be rekeyed depends on its brand, grade and condition, and we confirm that on site rather than promising it over the phone. For larger or more complex needs, our commercial locksmith work covers the hardware side beyond a rekey.
If you are not sure what you have, describe the doors to us and we will tell you what a commercial rekey would involve for your space.
Tenant turnover rekey: what landlords and property managers should know
Changing the cylinders between tenants is one of the simplest ways to control who has access to a unit. A previous tenant's keys, and any copies they made, stop working the moment the lock is rekeyed. For an owner with several units, such as a small building along Garfield Avenue, it also means one visit can cover multiple doors, with each unit keyed separately and, if you prefer, a way for you to keep access to common areas.
We keep it practical: tell us how many units, which doors need work, and how many keys each should have. We will rekey, test, and label the keys so they get to the right unit. We are not lawyers, so follow your lease and California rules on entry and lock changes. Our part is making sure the lock does what it should once you have decided to change it. If you manage rentals regularly, our page for landlords and property managers explains how we handle ongoing work.
One related note: if a tenant is locked out of their unit before or after a rekey, that is a separate call. We handle it as an apartment lockout, and we can often rekey on the same visit if you need it.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987, and rekeying is some of the oldest work in the trade. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, so a rekey is not handed off to a stranger who has never met the company. We are one company, not a call center that dispatches your job to whoever is available. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, at any hour, any day of the year.
We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and send out mobile service vans across 140 cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Montebello included. The van is stocked for rekeys, so most of the work gets done at your door. If you also need spare keys made once the rekey is done, we can handle that too through our key duplication service.
One piece of advice that applies to any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any company you are thinking of hiring for their license, and check that it is current before you let anyone work on your locks.
Frequently asked questions
Will my old keys still work after a rekey?
No. Once the cylinder is re-pinned to a new key pattern, the old keys will go into the lock but will not turn it. We test the old key after the work to confirm it, so you see the result before we leave.
Can you rekey a lock if I have lost every key?
In most cases, yes. A rekey does not depend on having the original key, because we are changing the pins anyway. We will ask you to show you have the right to change the lock, such as an ID with the address, a lease, or confirmation from the owner or property manager.
How long does a rekey take?
It depends mostly on how many locks are involved and what shape they are in. A single deadbolt is quick, and a whole house takes longer because each cylinder is pulled, re-pinned and tested. In general, a rekey is much faster than replacing the same number of locks.
Can all the locks on my house use the same key?
Usually, yes. We pin the cylinders alike so one key works on the front door, back door, side door and garage entry. If your locks are from different brands with different keyways, we may need to swap one cylinder to get them onto a single key, and we will tell you before we do.
Is rekeying less expensive than replacing locks?
When the hardware is sound, rekeying is usually the more economical route because you are not buying new locks. If a lock is worn or damaged, though, a rekey will not fix that, and replacement may be the sensible choice. We look at the lock first and tell you which makes sense.
Do I need to be home during a rekey?
Someone with authority over the property should be available, either to let us in or to confirm by phone that we have permission to work. For rentals, that means the owner, the property manager or a tenant who has the right to change the cylinder.
Can you rekey smart locks or high-security locks?
Many smart locks have a physical keyway cylinder that can be rekeyed, but the electronic side, including codes and app access, is separate and needs to be reset on its own. High-security cylinders with restricted keyways often need specific parts or factory authorization, so we confirm what is possible in person rather than guessing over the phone.
Do you handle rekeys at night and on weekends in Montebello?
Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year. If you need a rekey after hours, call and we will explain what is available and how after-hours work is priced.
How do I know the locksmith I hire is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license information before they start, and be cautious of anyone who will not give it. Also be wary of companies that give a vague business name or no physical address.
