What does a lock rekey actually do?
A lock rekey changes the inside of a lock so a different key operates it. Most house and apartment locks are pin tumbler cylinders, which hold rows of small spring-loaded pin stacks. The plug turns only when the right key lifts every stack to the same line. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart, swap in a new set of pins cut to a new key, and put it back together. The knob, the deadbolt, the finish and the door itself stay exactly as they were. The old keys no longer lift the pins to the right height, so they stop working.
That is why rekeying is the usual answer when the hardware is fine and the real problem is who holds a key. You cannot tell by looking at a lock how many copies exist or who has them. A rekey resets that count to the keys in your hand. It also lets us put every lock on your property on one key, so you carry one instead of a ring of them. That is what people mean when they ask us to rekey all house locks.
A rekey does not repair worn, loose or damaged hardware, and it does not strengthen a weak door or frame. If a lock is past saving, we will tell you before we touch it, and we will show you the options below.
When should you rekey your locks?
Rekeying is a reset button. These are the situations where it makes the most sense for Commerce homes and businesses:
- Rekey locks after moving in or after buying a house: previous owners, agents, contractors, relatives and neighbors may all hold copies, and you have no record of who.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out: the next tenant should be the only person with a working key to the unit. This is the core of tenant turnover rekey work.
- Rekey locks after losing keys: if a key is gone and could be tied to your address, by a wallet, a bag or a tagged ring, rekeying closes the door on whoever finds it.
- After a breakup, a roommate leaving, or a family member who no longer lives there.
- After an employee, manager or contractor leaves a business and still has a key.
- When you simply want fewer keys, with the front door, back door and deadbolt all on one.
How do we rekey your locks, step by step?
Here is how a rekey visit normally goes. The details shift a little between a two-door house and a small warehouse office, but the order stays the same.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us how many locks need rekeying, what kind they are (knob, deadbolt, lever, padlock, commercial cylinder) and whether it is a home or a business. A photo of the lock helps if you can text one.
- We tell you up front whether your locks can be rekeyed. Most standard pin tumbler locks can. Some very worn or damaged ones cannot, and we say so rather than sell you a job that will not hold up.
- A technician comes to you in a mobile van carrying pinning kits and key-cutting equipment, so the work is done at your door and not back at a shop.
- We ask for reasonable confirmation that you live at the property or are authorized to have it rekeyed. This protects owners and tenants, and any careful locksmith should do the same.
- We inspect each lock, then remove the cylinders, replace the pins, and cut new keys to match.
- We reinstall everything and test each lock several times with the new key. We also confirm that the old key no longer works.
- You get your new keys, and we explain where extra copies can be made so you do not end up with the same loose-key problem again.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you rekey, change the locks, or replace them?
Rekeying is usually the more economical route when your locks are in good shape. You keep the hardware you already have and only change what controls access. It is not always the right call, though.
If the lock is stiff, loose, corroded or visibly worn, new hardware will serve you better. That is a change locks job, or a full lock replacement if the whole set is tired or you want a different style. If a door has no deadbolt at all, or only a weak one, rekeying does not fix that. A deadbolt installation does.
After a rekey, you will probably want a few spare keys. Our key duplication service handles that, and we can cut them at the same visit. If you are locked out right now and need to get in before anything else, see our house lockout page. Once you are inside, we can often rekey in the same trip.
How much does lock rekeying cost in Commerce?
We do not publish flat rates for rekeying, because the work really does vary. We will explain the cost on the phone after a few questions, and before any work starts. These are the things that move the cost:
- The number of cylinders. Rekeying one deadbolt is a smaller job than rekeying every lock on a house or every door in a small building.
- The type and condition of the locks. Standard residential cylinders are straightforward. Worn locks, unusual brands and restricted or high-security keyways take more time and sometimes special parts.
- How many keys you need cut. Every lock gets at least one working key, and extra copies add to the work.
- When you call. Night, weekend and holiday visits are different from a scheduled weekday visit, and we are available around the clock either way.
- Whether it is combined with other work, such as a lockout, a broken key, or a lock that must be replaced instead.
- Commercial complexity. A single office door is different from a set of doors that must follow a master key plan.
Apartment lock rekey and tenant turnover
Between tenants, the question is simple: who might still have a key to this unit? An apartment lock rekey answers it. Old tenants, their guests, former roommates and past maintenance visits all create copies you never see. Rekeying the unit's entry lock and deadbolt, and any other exterior door, gives the next tenant the only working set. It also protects you as the owner if a dispute comes up later about who had access.
If you manage several units, we can work through them in a single visit and keep keying consistent. Our locksmith for landlords page covers the wider picture of turnover, repairs and key control for rental owners. Commerce has small rental pockets of older single-family houses as well as newer townhomes, and the same approach works in both: rekey, test, hand over fresh keys. Your lease and local rules govern your obligations as a landlord, so check those separately.

Call (213) 577-1366Commercial and business lock rekey in Commerce
A business lock rekey follows the same logic as a home rekey, with higher stakes. Common triggers are an employee or manager leaving, a new tenant taking over a unit, or a lost key to a shop door, back office or storage room. Commercial rekey work often involves commercial-grade cylinders, rim or mortise hardware and exit devices, not just residential knobs, and we work through those the same way: inspect, re-pin or re-core, cut, test.
Much of Commerce is warehouses and distribution buildings, where doors take heavy daily use. Before rekeying, we check whether the hardware is simply worn out. A fresh key in a failing lock does not solve much. When a business has many doors and many people, a structured master key system lets managers carry one key while staff each carry only what they need. For the wider range of work on business premises, see our commercial locksmith page.
Lock rekey around Rosewood Park, Bristow Park and Bandini
Commerce's residential areas are compact. The modest single-family homes from the 1940s and 1950s around Rosewood Park, Bandini and Bristow Park sit close to industrial districts, and ZIP code 90040 covers the whole city. Houses that age have often changed hands, been rented out and been worked on by contractors over decades, which means a lot of keys are floating around. House lockouts and rekeys in the Rosewood Park and Bristow Park pockets are among the most common calls we expect here, and rekeying after a purchase or tenant change is a natural first step for those homes.
Heat matters too. Commerce has hot, dry summers with little marine relief along the I-5 corridor. On older tract homes, wood doors can swell in summer, and a deadbolt that binds is sometimes a door-fit problem and not a lock problem. If that is what we find, we tell you plainly. A rekey will not cure a swollen door. Newer townhomes, like the Rosewood Village tract, usually have more modern hardware, and we rekey those the same way.
Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 19 miles from Commerce, and our mobile vans come to you. Whether you are in the Veterans Park area, near the Washington Boulevard, Telegraph Road or Atlantic Boulevard corridors, or in a shop near Citadel Outlets, the call goes to the same number. Retailers there often need business locks rekeyed after a staff change, and warehouse tenants along Washington Boulevard and Telegraph Road often need rekeying after a lease turns over.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Commerce is one of them. We are a single company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, not a call center passing your job to whoever answers a dispatch. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, at any hour, every day of the year. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we work.
One thing worth knowing as a customer: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call, including us, for their license details before you let them work on your locks. A reputable company will not mind the question.
We also tell you when a rekey is not the right answer. If your locks are worn out, if a door needs a deadbolt, or if the better move is replacing the set, we explain that and let you decide. For the full picture of what we do around Commerce, see our Commerce locksmith page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you rekey locks near me in Commerce at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and we send a mobile van to Commerce. Night and weekend visits can affect cost, and we explain that on the phone before we schedule anything.
Do I need to be home while you rekey my locks?
Someone who lives at the property or is authorized to have the work done should be there, at least at the start and the end. We ask for reasonable confirmation of that, and we hand the new keys to you directly after testing each lock.
Can every lock be rekeyed?
Most standard pin tumbler locks can be. Some very worn, damaged or low-quality locks cannot be rekeyed reliably, and in those cases replacement makes more sense. We tell you which situation you are in before we do the work.
Can you put all my house locks on one key?
Yes. If the locks are compatible, we rekey the front door, back door, deadbolts and other exterior locks so a single key works on all of them. Tell us which doors you want included when you call.
Should I rekey after buying a house in Commerce?
We recommend it. You do not know how many copies of the old keys exist or who holds them. Rekeying on or before move-in day resets that to the keys you are given, and it is typically more economical than replacing every lock.
What if I have lost every key to the lock?
We can usually still help. First we get the door open, which is a lockout service in its own right, and then we rekey so the lost keys no longer work. The cost depends on the lock and how it can be opened, and we explain it up front.
Is a rekeyed lock as secure as a new one?
A rekey makes the lock as secure as the lock itself. If the hardware is solid, you get that same level of security with new keys. If it is a weak or worn lock, a rekey will not make it stronger, and we will say so and discuss a replacement or a high-security option.
Do you handle commercial rekey for Commerce businesses?
Yes. We rekey shop doors, offices, storage rooms and warehouse doors, including after staff changes or a new tenant. For larger buildings we can discuss a master key plan so managers and staff carry only the keys they need.
How do I rekey between tenants without replacing locks?
Call us after the tenant moves out and before the next one moves in. We rekey the unit's entry locks, test them, and give you new keys. The hardware stays in place, so it is usually the more economical way to handle tenant turnover.
