What do Kia owners in Marina del Rey usually need?

Most Kia calls come down to a short list: every key is lost, the only key is cracked or worn out, a smart fob has stopped working, or a car that thieves went after now has a wrecked ignition. Marina del Rey adds its own twist. The area is almost entirely multifamily: large 1960s and 1970s apartment complexes, waterfront condominium towers and newer luxury rental buildings ring the harbor basins, and there are very few single-family homes. That means most people here park in shared or controlled-access garages and lots, not in a private driveway.

That changes what a lost key means. If you live in a building with a gated garage and a controlled-access lobby, the spare is often upstairs in a unit you cannot get into, or in a drawer on the other side of a door that is also locked. Some of our calls start as a car problem and turn out to be a building-access problem too. You may be out at Burton Chace Park or Fisherman's Village, or along Admiralty Way or Via Marina, with the key somewhere you cannot retrace.

The damp air matters as well. Right on the water, the marine layer keeps metal damp many mornings, and salt air corrodes exterior hardware noticeably faster than it does inland. We would not blame the air for every worn key, but a flip-key hinge, a set of button contacts or an emergency blade that rides around the harbor every day has a harder life than one that lives in an inland pocket.

How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?

You do not need to tow the car anywhere. Our mobile vans carry cutting and programming equipment, and the work happens where the Kia is parked, whether that is a curbside space, a lot or the visitor level of a garage. Our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd is about 9 miles from Marina del Rey, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the year and what happened. Give us the VIN if you can. It is on the dashboard at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door jamb sticker.
  2. We tell you what we expect your Kia to need based on the VIN: a simple cut key, a transponder key, or a smart fob. If something is unclear for that year, we say so instead of guessing.
  3. A technician comes to the car. Before any work starts, we ask for proof that the vehicle is yours, such as ID and registration or title.
  4. We cut the key by code or from the lock, depending on the situation, and program it through the OBD-II port if the car has an immobilizer.
  5. You test everything before we finish: start the car, lock and unlock, try the remote buttons, and make sure the key turns smoothly in both the door and the ignition.

Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Kia's US key history falls into three arcs, and knowing which one your car belongs to explains most of what the job involves.

Early 2000s Kias use plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. Some 2001-2006 models use a Texas 4D-60 chip, and from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s the common chip is the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2).

The defining Kia quirk is the no-immobilizer era. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. On those cars any correctly cut key starts the engine, so no transponder programming is needed. Only the keyless-entry remote, where one is fitted, needs OBD programming.

Push-button trims are different. They always carried full immobilizers. They started with ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s, moved to Hitag 3 / ID47 roughly between 2016 and 2020, and went to NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems on 2019-and-newer platforms. Those platforms include the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.

Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. At least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. So for cars from around that changeover we do not rely on the year alone. We confirm by VIN and in person.

How are immobilizer Kias programmed?

Kias with an immobilizer are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, through a dealer/KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access.

The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for adding a key and for most all-keys-lost work. But PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, and the very newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If your Kia is one of those, we tell you what we found before we start, not after.

One related point: Kia's anti-theft software update, released after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. It has no effect on how your keys are cut or programmed, so having had the update done does not make a key job harder or easier.

What if I have lost every Kia key?

An all-keys-lost situation sounds worse than it usually is, but how it goes depends on which era your car is from. If you have a turn-key Kia from the no-immobilizer era, we can generally cut a new mechanical key that starts the car, because there is no chip to match. If the car also had a remote, that is a separate step done through the OBD port.

For an immobilizer Kia, the new key has to be introduced to the car's computer without an existing key to work from. For many 2010s cars that is routine with current tools. For newer smart-key systems it can require a PIN and a server connection, and results depend on model year and the tool. This is where we are most careful to be honest. After we look at the VIN and the car in person, we tell you whether we can do it at the curb or whether your Kia is a case that points to the dealer.

Whichever it is, you do not need to push or tow the car first, and you do not need to guess at the answer. Call us with the VIN and we will explain what that particular car needs. For more on the general process, see our page on lost car key replacement in Marina del Rey.

What problems do we see most often with Kia keys?

These are the Kia key problems that come up again and again:

  • Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars: broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks from the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. A stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, where the key sticks or will not turn.
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn-out buttons.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries. The car reports 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Hardware-store copies. They start no-immobilizer Kias fine, but will not start immobilizer-equipped cars without programming.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently.

What affects the cost of a Kia key in Marina del Rey?

We do not quote numbers in an article, because the right number depends on the car. These are the things that move the cost up or down:

  • Which key your Kia uses: a plain cut key, a transponder key, a flip key or a push-button smart fob. A simple cut key on a no-immobilizer car is usually the more economical route.
  • Whether programming is needed. No-immobilizer cars need none for the key itself, while immobilizer cars do.
  • Whether a PIN or server access is required for your model year, and how that is obtained.
  • How many keys are left. Adding a key to a car that still has one is usually simpler than an all-keys-lost job.
  • Whether the ignition lock or steering column is damaged, as on a car recovered after a theft attempt. That repair is separate from the key itself.
  • The time of day. We are available around the clock, and after-hours work is different from a daytime appointment.
  • Whether you need a replacement shell or a repair on your existing fob, which can be the lighter-cost option when the electronics still work.

Should I go to the Kia dealer or call a locksmith?

Both are reasonable choices, and which one makes sense depends on the car. A dealer can do any Kia key, and for some of the newest facelift years or unusual situations it may be the only route. If that is the case for your car, we tell you plainly, before we do any work.

For most Kias on the road in Marina del Rey, we come to you, so there is no tow and no trip across town. A dealer visit usually means getting the car there and working within their schedule, and the car may have to stay overnight. A locksmith visit usually means one appointment where the car is parked. If you are not sure which way to go, call us and we will tell you what we think your VIN points to.

If you only need the fob, see our page on key fob replacement in Marina del Rey.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company with a storefront in Westwood and our own mobile vans, so the person who answers the phone is not a dispatcher passing your job to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

A practical point for any locksmith you call: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it before you hire anyone. Ask us, too.

You can reach our overall car key replacement service through the same number, or look at what we do for Kia keys in general or the full range on our car keys page.

Kia key service around Marina del Rey: Via Marina, Admiralty Way and beyond

We work across the 90292 ZIP code and the areas around it. That includes the Via Marina corridor, the Admiralty Way corridor, the Fisherman's Village area, Villa Marina and Mariners Village. We also reach adjacent areas such as the Marina Peninsula and the Oxford Triangle, which are in the City of Los Angeles rather than the unincorporated community.

Two things from this area shape how we work. First, the buildings: with large apartment complexes, waterfront condominium towers and controlled-access parking garages, you may need to meet us at a gate or have someone let us in, so tell us where the car is and how to reach it. Second, the water: the same salt air that corrodes deadbolts and gate latches around the harbor is hard on metal parts, so if your key sticks or your fob's emergency blade looks rough, it is worth looking at before it fails.

If you are locked out rather than missing a key, our page on car lockout service in Marina del Rey covers that. For everything else in the area, start at our Marina del Rey locksmith page, or use our contact page if you would rather write than call. The main site is at Wilshire Lock & Key.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Kia key if I have lost all of them?

In many cases, yes. On a turn-key Kia from the no-immobilizer era we can generally cut a working mechanical key. On immobilizer cars it depends on the model year and the tools involved, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. We check your VIN first and tell you what is possible before work begins.

Does my Kia have a transponder chip?

It depends on the car. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer, so there is no chip to program. Push-button trims always had one. Kia made immobilizers standard during the 2022 model year, but changeovers vary, so we confirm by VIN.

Will a hardware-store copy work on my Kia?

On a no-immobilizer Kia it will usually start the car, because any correctly cut key does. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia it will turn in the lock but not start the engine without programming. Knowing which one you have saves you a wasted trip.

My Kia says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery in the smart fob is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, the fob or the car's receiver may be at fault, and we can test it.

Does Kia's anti-theft software update change how keys are programmed?

No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. It does not change how your keys are cut or programmed, so it neither helps nor hinders a key replacement.

Can you come to my building's garage?

Yes, we do mobile service wherever the car is parked. Marina del Rey has many controlled-access garages and lots, so tell us where the car is and how we get in, and arrange for a gate to be opened if needed.

What do I need to show you before you make a key?

We ask for proof that the car is yours, such as ID and registration or title, and we will want the VIN. That protects you and keeps the work above board.

How much does a Kia key cost?

It depends on the type of key, whether programming is needed, whether a PIN or server access is required, how many keys remain, the time of day and any lock damage. Call (213) 577-1366 with your model, year and VIN, and we will explain what applies to your car.

Will my Kia need the dealer?

Most do not, but some of the newest facelift years or unusual cases may. We check the VIN and tell you honestly before we start. If the dealer is the right route, we say so.
