House key being duplicated on a manual key machine

What does key duplication mean for a Manhattan Beach home or business?

Key duplication is making a working copy of a key you already own. For a plain house key it often is simple, but the quality of the copy still depends on four things: the right blank, a cutting machine that is set up properly, the condition of the original, and whether the person at the machine is paying attention. We handle house keys, apartment keys, office and shop keys, duplicate deadbolt keys, mailbox keys, and, where the paperwork allows, high-security and restricted keys.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and Manhattan Beach is about 17 miles from that base. Most of the calls we get for this work are ordinary and sensible: someone wants a spare house key before a house sitter, contractor or teenager needs one. Others come from people holding a copy that was cut badly somewhere else and now binds, sticks or refuses to turn.

Why do some copied keys stick, bind or break?

A pin tumbler lock works by lifting a set of small pins to exact heights. If a copy is off by even a tiny amount at one cut, the key may still go in but turn only with a jiggle, or it may work for a month and then start wearing the lock. Bad copies almost always come from a short list of causes:

  • The wrong blank. Many keyways look almost identical, and a blank that is close in shape but not correct for your lock will never track properly.
  • A worn original. A copy of a worn copy carries the wear forward, and each generation drifts a little further from the factory cuts.
  • Burrs left on the key. Fresh cuts leave tiny metal edges that drag against the pins and scratch the inside of the cylinder if they are not removed.
  • A tired or poorly adjusted cutting machine, or someone rushing the job.
  • A lock that is the real problem, with the key getting the blame.

Is it the key, or is it the lock?

This matters in Manhattan Beach more than in many places. Direct beachfront exposure means salt air steadily corrodes exterior lock hardware, especially along The Strand and in the Sand Section. The persistent marine layer dampness can also swell wood doors and stick latches in older cottages. A swollen door that drags on its strike can feel exactly like a key that does not work, and a corroded cylinder can chew up a perfectly good key.

So before we cut anything, we look at how the existing key behaves in the lock. If the lock is the culprit, a new key will only cut a fresh copy that fails the same way, and rekeying or replacing the lock is the better path. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a spare that does not solve your problem.

How do we duplicate a key, step by step?

The process is not complicated, but each step has a reason. This is how we approach it:

  1. Look at the key and, when we can, the lock it belongs to. We identify the brand, the keyway and how worn the key is.
  2. Choose the blank by keyway and brand, not by a guess from how the key looks. This is where many cheap copies go wrong.
  3. Cut the copy. If the original is badly worn, we may cut by code or decode the lock's actual specification rather than copy the wear from the old key.
  4. Remove burrs and clean the cuts so the key slides in without dragging on the pins.
  5. Test the result. When we are at your door with the lock in front of us, we run the key through the lock repeatedly, including throwing the deadbolt with the door open and closed. If you have brought the key to our storefront, we compare it against the original and ask you to try it in your own lock before you retire the old key.
  6. Hand it back with a plain recommendation: if the original is badly worn or the lock is sticking, we say so, so you are not surprised later.

Which keys can we copy, and which ones are different?

Most keys are straightforward. A few are not, and we would rather explain the difference honestly than promise something we cannot do.

  • House and apartment keys: standard residential keys are the most common job and usually the most direct. Bring the key you trust most, not the one that has been copied five times.
  • Duplicate deadbolt keys: many homes have a separate deadbolt key from the knob or handleset key. Bring every key that goes with the door so each one can be matched correctly.
  • Office and commercial keys: shops and offices often use keys that are meant to be controlled. If your keys belong to a master key system, we ask who is authorized to approve new copies so the hierarchy is respected.
  • Mailbox keys: copies of keys for private building or locking residential mailboxes are a normal job. A mailbox that is controlled by the Postal Service is handled by the Postal Service, and we will tell you plainly if that is what you have.
  • High-security keys: these use patent-protected or controlled keyways and often need proof of authorization before copies are made. Some may need to be ordered, and timing varies. You can read more about the locks themselves on our high-security locks page.
  • Restricted keys: same idea. We do not bypass restrictions. If your key is restricted, we will explain what we need from you and what the manufacturer or system holder requires.
  • 'Do Not Duplicate' stamps: a stamp alone is a request, not a technical barrier, and some keys stamped this way are ordinary keys. We still take it seriously and ask who is authorizing the copy before we cut a key that someone marked as controlled.
  • Car keys: automotive keys are a different job. Many need electronic programming, and what a particular vehicle requires can only be confirmed by VIN or in person, so we do not guess over the phone. Some vehicles may be dealer-only, and if yours is one of them we say so honestly.

How much does key duplication cost in Manhattan Beach?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the key in your hand. These are the things that move the cost up or down:

  • Key type and blank availability. A common residential key is a very different job from a high-security key with a controlled blank.
  • Standard versus restricted. Restricted and high-security keys can involve authorization steps, special blanks or factory ordering.
  • How many copies you need, and whether they are all the same key.
  • Condition of the original. A worn key may need to be cut by code or decoded, which takes more time than a simple copy.
  • Where the work happens. Bringing a plain key to our storefront is usually the more economical route. A mobile visit adds travel and our technician's time, so it makes the most sense when it is bundled with other work or when you cannot get to us.
  • Time of day. We answer the phone around the clock, and after-hours visits are priced differently from a daytime storefront stop.

Key duplication around Manhattan Beach, from the Sand Section to Manhattan Village

Manhattan Beach is one ZIP code, 90266, but the keys behave differently depending on the street. Here is how it plays out in specific parts of town.

In the Sand Section, the walk-streets mix surviving 1920s-1940s beach cottages with newer custom rebuilds. Many older cottages retain original door hardware, which often means old, worn keys that have been copied again and again. If that is your key, we look hard at the wear before copying it, and we may suggest cutting from the lock rather than from the worn key. Walk-street access also matters for the most common scenario we hear about: a home lockout where parking and access are tight. A spare cut in advance, kept somewhere safe, saves a stressful call. If you are already locked out, our house lockout service is the page you want.

Near The Strand and across the Sand Section, salt air eats exterior deadbolts and handlesets. A key that is turning in a corroded cylinder will wear fast, and copying it does not help. In those cases the sensible order is to replace the corroded hardware first, then cut spares from the new key.

In the Tree and Hill Sections, mid-century homes sit alongside heavy teardown-and-rebuild construction. That creates two key situations. After a sale or a remodel, a lot of keys have been handed to agents, contractors and previous owners, so duplicating is often paired with rekeying. New builds often use high-end and smart-lock systems, and the mechanical backup keys on those can be restricted. If your new Hill Section home has a smart lock, see our smart lock installation page, and call us before assuming the backup key can be copied like an ordinary one.

In El Porto near Highland Avenue, apartments and duplexes mean multiple tenants, landlords and sometimes a property manager, all with different needs. For apartment key copying, we ask whether the person calling is authorized, because we will not copy a key for a unit when the request does not come from the right person.

East Manhattan Beach is dominated by 1950s-1960s single-family tracts. Those homes have often gone through decades of owners, so a spare key that was cut years ago may be a copy of a copy. Manhattan Village, the gated condominium and townhome community near the mall, is different again: the community may control its own keys, and if so we ask for sign-off before cutting. Downtown, along Manhattan Beach Blvd, storefront and office keys are a regular request, and the same authorization questions apply.

Can you do mobile key duplication at my door?

Yes, for many keys. Our mobile locksmith service means a technician can come to your home or workplace with the equipment to cut standard keys on the spot and test them in your own lock. That is useful if you are juggling a remodel, a rental turnover, or an office where nobody can leave.

Not every key can be cut in a van. A high-security or restricted key may need authorization or a factory blank, and we will tell you on the phone whether your key can be done at your door or needs the storefront. Describe what you have, including any brand name or markings, and we will give you a straight answer before sending anyone.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for spare keys?

Key work looks small, but trust matters because a key is access to your home or business. Here is what we can honestly offer:

  • We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
  • We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans, so you are not dealing with a call center and a stranger.
  • We are one company. We do not dispatch your job to a third-party middleman who then bills you.
  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work and the standards we hold ourselves to.
  • The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366.

What should you ask any locksmith before they cut your keys?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, issued through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith for that license information before they start work, no matter who they are. Also ask what they will do about a key that is marked 'Do Not Duplicate', what the key will be tested in, and whether they will explain the cost before they begin.

Once you have your copies, test each one in the lock right away, not weeks later. Mark the spares so you know which is which, and keep one somewhere other than the house. If a key goes missing, a copy does not fix the security problem, and rekeying is the better answer. If a key has snapped in the lock, that is a different job from copying, and our broken key extraction page explains it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you copy a key that says 'Do Not Duplicate'?

Sometimes, depending on the key. The stamp is a request by whoever issued the key, not always a technical restriction. We ask who is authorizing the copy and take the stamp seriously, especially for office, building and master-system keys. If the key is truly restricted, we will explain what is required.

Do you copy high-security or restricted keys in Manhattan Beach?

Yes, where the paperwork and manufacturer rules allow it. These keys usually need proof of authorization and may require a special blank or a factory order, so timing varies. We do not bypass restrictions, and we will tell you plainly if your key cannot be copied without approval.

Can I get a duplicate mailbox key?

For private or building mailboxes with an ordinary lock, yes. If your mailbox is controlled by the Postal Service, the Postal Service handles those keys and we will say so. If you have lost the key entirely, the answer may be a lock replacement rather than a copy.

Do I have to bring the original key?

For a true duplicate, you need a working key to copy from. If you have lost every key, that is a different problem: depending on the lock, we may be able to cut a key from the lock itself or rekey it. Call us and describe the situation.

Can you come to my home to copy a key?

Often, yes. Our mobile vans can cut and test many standard keys at your door. Some keys, especially high-security or restricted ones, may need the storefront or special blanks. Tell us what you have when you call and we will confirm what can be done on-site.

Why does my new copy stick or barely turn?

Common causes are the wrong blank, a worn original, burrs left on the cuts, or a lock that is worn or corroded. Salt air near the beach can make that last one more likely. Bring the copy and the original and we can tell you whether the key or the lock needs attention.

Can you duplicate a key for a smart lock or a keypad deadbolt?

Many smart locks have a mechanical backup key, and that key may be copyable or may be restricted, depending on the brand. Access codes and electronic credentials are not duplicated like a metal key. Call with the brand and model, and we will tell you what applies.

Do you make car keys on this service?

Key duplication here is about house, apartment, office and mailbox keys. Many modern car keys have electronics that need programming, and what a given vehicle needs can only be confirmed by VIN or in person. Some vehicles may be dealer-only. Call us with the vehicle details and we will say honestly what is possible.

Can I call at night about a spare key?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. For routine copies, a daytime visit is usually the more economical route, but if you need a key cut after hours, call and we will tell you what we can do.
