What does a deadbolt installation actually involve?

A deadbolt is the lock that does the real work on an exterior door. The spring latch in a doorknob only holds the door shut, and it can be pushed back with a thin piece of plastic or a hard shove. A deadbolt throws a solid steel bolt into the door frame and keeps it there until a key or thumbturn pulls it back. Installing one is about more than the lock body. It is the holes in the door, the position of the bolt, the strike plate, and the length of the screws that tie everything into the framing behind the trim.

Most deadbolt calls in Manhattan Beach fall into three groups. The first is a door that has only a knob latch and needs a deadbolt added. The second is an existing deadbolt that is worn, sticking, loose, or corroded and needs replacing. The third is a new build or a remodel where every exterior door needs matching hardware. We handle all three, and we install both single-cylinder and double-cylinder models.

This page is about the deadbolt itself. If you are changing a whole set of hardware, or adding a handleset and other locks at the same time, our lock installation service covers the wider job.

Single-cylinder or double-cylinder: which deadbolt should you choose?

A single-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on the outside and has a thumbturn on the inside. It is what most homes use, and it is the easier one to live with. You can leave quickly, and so can everyone else in the house.

A double-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides. The reason to choose one is specific: there is glass in the door, or a sidelight or window close enough that someone could break it, reach in, and turn a thumbturn. A key on the inside means a broken pane alone does not let them open the door.

The tradeoff is real, and we will tell you plainly. A keyed-inside deadbolt means you need a key to get out, including in a fire or other emergency. Many building and fire codes restrict keyed-inside deadbolts on doors that serve as a required exit, and the rules differ by building type. We talk through your door and your household before we install one.

  • Choose single-cylinder when the door is solid and there is no glass within arm's reach of the thumbturn. It is usually the more economical route and the easier one in an emergency.
  • Choose double-cylinder when glass in or beside the door makes the thumbturn a weak point, and when you will keep a key in a consistent spot near the door, out of sight from outside.
  • Consider a different fix, such as security film or a different door, if the only reason for a double-cylinder is worry and the door is not an exit you rely on.

How do we install a deadbolt, step by step?

The process is the same on a first-time install and a replacement, though a replacement often skips the drilling. What separates a deadbolt that works for years from one that binds in a month is mostly the alignment steps near the end.

  1. Look at the door and frame. We check thickness, material, condition, any existing holes, and whether the wood has swollen or the frame has shifted.
  2. Choose the hardware with you. That means single or double cylinder, finish, security grade, and whether the new key should match your other locks.
  3. Mark and bore. On a new install we use a drilling jig so the face hole and the edge hole are square to each other and sit at the correct backset. If there is already a bore from an old deadbolt, we reuse it when it is sound.
  4. Fit the latch. The edge of the door is cut so the faceplate sits flush, because a latch that sticks out catches the frame.
  5. Mount the cylinder and the interior assembly, then check that the tailpiece engages the bolt mechanism fully on both sides.
  6. Prepare the strike. We set the strike plate, deepen the bolt hole in the frame, and use screws long enough to reach the stud behind the jamb, not just the trim.
  7. Align and test. With the door open and then closed, we throw the bolt repeatedly. It should move freely with no lifting or pushing on the door. If it drags, we adjust until it does not.
  8. Hand over the keys, show you how everything works, and clean up the shavings.

What affects the cost of deadbolt installation in Manhattan Beach?

We do not publish numbers on this page because the honest answer depends on the door in front of us. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost up or down, so a quote makes sense when you hear it. We give you a clear quote before we start working, once we have seen the door or heard it described well enough to price.

If you want the lighter-cost option, the best lever is usually reusing what is already sound. A solid deadbolt that only needs new keys is often better handled by rekeying the lock than by replacing it. If you want more resistance to picking, drilling, and prying, a high-security lock costs more and is worth it for some doors, not all.

  • New install versus replacement. Adding a deadbolt means drilling and fitting. Swapping one for another often uses the existing holes.
  • Door material. Solid wood, hollow-core, steel, fiberglass, and glass-panel doors each need different handling and sometimes different bits.
  • Condition of the door and frame. A split edge, old filled holes, or a warped jamb adds repair work before the lock can sit properly.
  • Hardware grade and brand. Higher-grade deadbolts have heavier bolts and stronger internals, and they cost more.
  • Single versus double cylinder, and the finish you pick.
  • How many doors we do in one visit, and whether you want the locks keyed alike.
  • When and where the job happens, since after-hours calls and distance are part of the cost of getting a technician to you.

When should you replace a deadbolt instead of repairing it?

Plenty of deadbolts can be adjusted or serviced, and we will say so when that is the right call. There are also clear signs that replacement is the better choice. A key that has to be wiggled, a bolt that does not fully extend, a cylinder that spins or is loose in the door, and a thumbturn that wobbles all point to worn or damaged internals. Visible rust or a seized cylinder is a clear case for replacing.

Sometimes the reason is not the lock but who has keys. After a move, a breakup, a contractor job, or a lost key, you may not know how many copies exist. If the deadbolt is in good shape, rekeying fixes that. If it is old, loose, or a basic grade you would like to upgrade, swapping it is the cleaner answer. Our lock replacement service covers cases where the whole lock set needs to change, not just the deadbolt.

If the new deadbolt does not close smoothly after we install it, we treat that as unfinished work, not as normal. The bolt should slide into the frame without a fight.

Deadbolt installation across Manhattan Beach: what the neighborhoods tell us

Manhattan Beach is almost entirely single-family homes, with townhomes and condos clustered toward Rosecrans Avenue and the north end. The mix of old and new construction shapes the deadbolt work in specific ways.

In the Sand Section, walk-streets hold surviving 1920s to 1940s cottages next to newer custom rebuilds. Many of the older cottages still carry their original door hardware, which is often a knob latch with no real deadbolt, or a worn one from decades ago. Beachfront exposure is the other factor. Salt air steadily corrodes exterior hardware, especially along The Strand, and the persistent marine layer dampness can swell wood doors and make latches stick. A deadbolt in that setting needs a finish that holds up, a bore that is clean, and an alignment with some tolerance for a door that moves with the weather. Replacing salt-corroded deadbolts on beachfront homes is a regular job. On walk-streets where parking and access are tight, tell us when you call so we can plan how to reach the door.

In the Tree and Hill Sections, mid-century homes sit alongside extensive teardown-and-rebuild construction. New builds commonly use high-end and smart-lock systems, and the Hill Section has seen smart lock installation on new construction. If you want a connected lock, our smart lock installation page covers that, while a standard keyed deadbolt remains the simpler and more economical choice for many entries, such as side or garage doors.

East Manhattan Beach is dominated by 1950s to 1960s single-family tracts, where front and back doors often need a deadbolt added or upgraded. Manhattan Village is a gated condominium and townhome community near the mall, and in El Porto near Highland Avenue we also see apartment and duplex doors. If you rent or live under an association, check whether the building has rules about exterior door hardware before choosing a lock. Everything here falls under ZIP 90266, and our mobile vans come to the door from the Westwood storefront, about 17 miles away.

If you are locked out while you wait to get a deadbolt fitted, our house lockout service is the right place to start.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a deadbolt?

We have been in business since 1987, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We are one company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call, you reach us, not a dispatch center that sells your job to whoever is free.

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. That matters for deadbolts more than people expect. A lot of installs are urgent: a break-in left a door damaged, a tenant moved out, or a key went missing. Our 24-hour locksmith service is built for that, and our mobile locksmith vans bring the work to your door.

We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Manhattan Beach is one of many places we work regularly. We do not fake local trivia. What we can tell you is that salt air and damp wood doors change how we choose and fit a deadbolt on the coast.

How can you check a locksmith before they touch your door?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, issued through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith for it before work starts, and check it yourself. That includes us. A company that is hesitant to answer is giving you information.

A few other questions are worth asking whoever you call.

  • Will you give me a clear quote before starting, and what could change it?
  • Are you drilling a new hole, or reusing the existing bore?
  • What grade is the deadbolt, and what finish is it, given my door's exposure?
  • Is the person coming to my door an employee of the company I called?
  • Will you test the bolt with the door closed and show me how it works?

How should you prepare for the visit?

You do not need much. A few small things make the visit faster and the quote more accurate.

  • Clear access to the door, including any furniture, shoes, or planters.
  • Tell us on the phone what the door is made of, whether there is glass in or near it, and whether it already has a deadbolt.
  • Mention any sticking, especially in damp weather, so we can check the frame as well as the lock.
  • Decide whether you want the new key to match your other locks.
  • If you live in a condo or townhome community, confirm any hardware rules with your association first.

Frequently asked questions

Can you add a deadbolt to a door that only has a knob latch?

Usually yes. The door needs to be thick and solid enough to take the bore without weakening it. We check the door and the frame first. A hollow or damaged door may need repair or a different approach before a deadbolt can hold properly.

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt safe to use at home?

It depends on the door and the household. A key is needed to leave, which can slow an emergency exit, and many building and fire codes limit keyed-inside deadbolts on required exits. We explain the tradeoff and recommend one only when glass near the door makes it worthwhile.

Should I replace my deadbolt or just rekey it?

If the lock works smoothly and you only want new keys, rekeying is usually the lighter-cost option. If the deadbolt is corroded, loose, worn, or a grade you want to upgrade, replacing it makes more sense. We tell you which applies when we see it.

Will salt air ruin a new deadbolt near the beach?

No finish is immune, and salt air is hard on exterior hardware, especially along The Strand and in the Sand Section. A suitable finish, clean fitting, and occasional care help it last longer. We talk through finish choices based on how exposed your door is.

My door sticks when it is damp. Will a new deadbolt fix that?

Not by itself. Marine layer dampness can swell wood doors, and a swollen door can bind against the frame and the bolt. We check alignment and the strike while installing, which often helps, but sometimes the door itself also needs attention.

Can my new deadbolt use the same key as my other locks?

Often yes, depending on the brand and keyway of your existing locks. We confirm compatibility on site. If it cannot match, we can talk about rekeying the other locks so one key works for the whole house.

Can I get a deadbolt installed at night or on a weekend?

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (213) 577-1366, tell us what happened and what the door looks like, and we will tell you what we can do and when.

Do you install deadbolts in Manhattan Beach ZIP 90266 and the surrounding areas?

Yes. We work throughout Manhattan Beach, including ZIP 90266, and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Our mobile vans come to your door from our Westwood storefront.
