What do Honda owners in Malibu usually need?
Most Honda calls from Malibu come down to four situations: a key that is lost, a key that has stopped working, a remote shell that has cracked, or a smart fob the car no longer recognizes. The car is rarely the real problem. The setting is. Malibu is a long, narrow city strung along Pacific Coast Highway, with canyons climbing into the hills, so when a key goes missing you are often a long way from your spare.
Think about where a Honda actually sits. Beach house owners in Malibu Colony and on Point Dume park a few steps from the sand. People spend a day at Zuma Beach, Point Dume State Beach, El Matador State Beach or Leo Carrillo State Park, and a fob in a pocket does not always survive a swim. Canyon residents off Latigo and Corral Canyon roads may park behind a gate at the end of a long drive. Anyone shopping or working near Malibu Country Mart or the Civic Center area leaves a car for hours. In every one of those spots a lockout or a dead key is an inconvenience that a tow truck only makes bigger.
Here is what we see most often on Hondas:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 models, where the key sticks, needs jiggling or stops turning
- Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models
- Dead smart-fob batteries, with a 'key not detected' message even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- Hardware-store copies that open the doors but will not start the engine because there is no transponder chip
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that work for a while, then fail intermittently
- A flashing green key light, which points to an antenna-ring or chip fault
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
You do not need to take the car anywhere. Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, and the work happens wherever the Honda is parked: a driveway, a street near the beach, or a spot at the top of a canyon road. Here is the sequence.
We do not leave until the key starts the car and you have watched it work. For the wider picture of what we do for cars in town, see car key replacement in Malibu.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers around the clock, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, the trim if you know it, and what happened.
- We narrow down the key type. The model year decides almost everything, so we may ask for the VIN. Before we quote, we confirm that your specific car can be handled in the field. If it is a newer model that is still dealer-only, we say so right then.
- We drive to you. Our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood is about 17 miles from Malibu, and the van does the travelling.
- We confirm the car is yours. Expect to show ID and a registration or title that matches the vehicle. That protects you as much as it protects us.
- If you are locked out, we get you in first. That process is covered on our Malibu car lockout page.
- We cut the key, program the transponder or fob through the OBD-II port, and test everything: door lock, ignition, remote buttons and any memory settings tied to the key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Honda added immobilizers model by model, not all at once, so your key depends on your exact model and year. This is the general pattern for US cars. We verify the exact changeover year for your VIN rather than guessing.
Those eras are why a key that looks like another Honda's may not work on yours. A locksmith who offers to cut a key without asking your model year is a red flag. You can read more on our Honda car keys page or in the broader car key guide. If your problem is specifically a remote or smart fob, see key fob replacement in Malibu.
- Plain mechanical keys: several Hondas had no chip into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Any hardware-store copy starts these, which is a big reason they still top theft lists.
- First chip era (Megamos 13, fixed code): Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
- Philips ID46 (Hitag 2): Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
- Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3): starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's following redesign.
- Newest platform (Hitag AES '4A' fobs): Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
What if you have lost every Honda key?
This is called all keys lost, and on a Honda it is usually solvable. Hondas are among the most locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era can be programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and on most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer. In most cases that means a working key made at the curb, with no tow.
There are honest exceptions. On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU, which takes more time. On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory, each key has to be matched to the correct memory slot, or the settings will not follow the right driver.
The newest cars are the real caveat. On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before we quote, so you hear the truth before we drive out.
If you still have one working key, say so when you call. Adding a key is the simpler job. More on the process is on our lost car key replacement page.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Honda key in Malibu?
We do not put numbers on a web page because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the factors that move the cost:
Ask any locksmith for the full total before work starts, including the trip. We will walk through the same factors on the phone at (213) 577-1366. Making a spare while you still have a working key is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
- Key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity fob are very different things to produce.
- Model and year: the era of your Honda sets the chip, the equipment and how much can be done in the field.
- All keys lost versus adding a spare: with a working key in hand the job is simpler.
- Bench work: some of the oldest Megamos-13 cars may need work on the immobilizer unit or ECU.
- Number of keys and memory matching: extra keys and Driver 1 / Driver 2 setup add steps.
- Whether a lockout is part of the visit, plus the time of day and where you are.
- Whether a shell swap solves it: a cracked shell on a healthy remote is usually the lighter-cost fix compared with a whole new key.
Dealer or locksmith: which is right for your Honda?
Both are legitimate, and the right one depends on the car. A dealer can order keys by VIN and has factory access, which matters for the newest model years where aftermarket tool support may lag. If your Honda is a recent Accord, Civic, CR-V, Pilot or HR-V on the newest platform, we will tell you plainly if the dealer is the only path.
For nearly everything else, a mobile locksmith makes more sense. The car stays where it is, so you skip the tow. The key is programmed through the OBD-II port at the curb, and you can have a spare made on the same visit. Because Hondas are easy cars for aftermarket work, a locksmith is a reasonable first call. If you are unsure, ask the dealer what they need, then call us and compare.
One more check: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins, including us.
Honda key service around Malibu: neighborhoods, gates and rebuilt homes
We work across the whole city, including ZIP codes 90265 and 90263. That covers Malibu Colony, Carbon Beach, Broad Beach, Point Dume, Paradise Cove, Serra Retreat, Big Rock, Las Flores Canyon, Corral Canyon, Latigo Canyon, Trancas Canyon and the Zuma Beach area.
Access shapes the visit. Malibu Colony is guard-gated and Serra Retreat is a gated enclave, so tell us the gate arrangements when you call and let the guard know we are coming. Canyon estates off Latigo and Corral Canyon roads may have their own gates or keypads, so have the code ready.
Many Malibu homes are recent rebuilds after the 2018 Woolsey Fire and the January 2025 Palisades Fire on the city's eastern edge. If you are replacing door hardware and car keys in the same season, we can handle the Honda while you sort the rest. Canyon mouths also channel hot, dry Santa Ana winds that drive wildfire risk, so it is worth knowing where a working spare key and fob live before you ever need to leave in a hurry. You can see our full local services on the Malibu locksmith page.

Call (213) 577-1366How do salt air and beach life wear on Honda keys?
Malibu has a true coastal microclimate. Marine layer, fog and salt air corrode exterior metal noticeably faster than inland, and damp conditions swell wood doors. Honda key wear is mostly about age and use, and the worn ignition wafers we see on 1996-2014 models come from years of turning. A coastal car just lives a harder life, so a visibly worn blade or a sticky ignition is a warning worth acting on.
A few habits help: wipe sand and salt off fobs, change a smart-fob battery when the dash starts complaining, check that the hidden emergency blade slides out, and keep a spare somewhere dry that is not the car. A spare made today is simpler than an all-keys-lost job later.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key if I have lost all of them?
In most cases, yes. Every Honda immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port, and most models need no manufacturer PIN. The exceptions are some 1998-2004 cars that need bench work and the newest model years, which can be dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before quoting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?
Only on a pre-immobilizer car, such as a Civic through 2000 or a CR-V through 2001. Anything newer needs a programmed transponder. A plain copy may open the doors but will not start the engine.
My smart fob says 'key not detected.' What should I do?
Start with the battery. The hidden emergency blade will still open the door. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob or the car's antenna side may have a fault, and we can sort that out at the curb.
What does a flashing green key light mean?
It is the immobilizer light, and flashing can point to an antenna-ring or chip fault. An in-person check tells us whether the key or the car needs the work.
Do you come to Malibu at night and on weekends?
Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and our vans serve Malibu from Westwood, about 17 miles away. We do not promise arrival times on a web page; we give you a realistic one when you call.
Do I need a PIN code from Honda?
On most models, no. Professional equipment programs through the OBD-II port, and Honda does not generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work.
What about memory keys on an Odyssey, Accord or Pilot?
Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys must be matched to the correct memory slot. We handle that during programming and test it before we leave.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for it before work begins.
