What do Honda owners in Lomita usually need?

Most Honda calls from Lomita come down to four situations: a key that has worn out, a key that is gone, a smart fob that has stopped working, or a hardware-store copy that opens the door but won't start the car. Honda keys cover a wide span, from the plain metal Civic and CR-V keys of the late 1990s to current smart fobs, so the first thing we work out is which kind of key your car actually uses.

Where the trouble happens locally shapes the job. Small apartment buildings cluster near Narbonne Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, and a lockout there often means a shared lot or a curb with neighbors coming and going. In townhome and condo developments, a spare key may be sitting inside a unit you can't get into. In the mobile home parks along PCH, the car is often parked right by the front door, so a lost Honda key can mean a lost house key too. On the deep lots left over from Lomita's small-farm days, the Honda may be parked well back from the street beside a garage or workshop, and we simply drive to wherever it sits.

Along the commercial stretches of PCH and Narbonne, the call we expect is keys locked in the car during an errand. Our Lomita car lockout service handles that using methods meant to protect the door and weatherstripping. If the key is truly gone, that's a different job, and it's covered below.

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

Because the equipment rides in our van, your Honda never has to be towed or driven on a failing key. Here is how a typical visit goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and tell us the model, year, trim if you know it, and what you have: one working key, a broken key, or nothing.
  2. We work out which key system your Honda uses and confirm that current professional tools cover that model year before we quote. If it's a newest-generation car where coverage is unsettled, we say so up front.
  3. A mobile van comes to your location, whether that's a driveway, an apartment lot or a space outside a storefront. We'll ask for ID and registration so we know the car is yours.
  4. If you have no key, we cut a new one to fit your locks, then program it through the OBD-II port under the dash with professional equipment.
  5. On cars with Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory settings, such as certain Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims, we match each key to the correct memory slot.
  6. We test everything before we leave: door locks, remote buttons, and above all that the engine starts. If you hold another key, we check that it still starts the car too.

Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Honda brought in immobilizer chips model by model, not all at once. Your Civic's key and your neighbor's Accord key can belong to different eras. Here is the plain version.

  • Plain mechanical keys: several Hondas kept them into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. There's no chip to program, and no theft protection either.
  • Megamos 13 fixed-code chip: Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
  • Philips ID46 / Hitag 2 chip: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
  • Honda G chip (ID47 / Hitag 3): starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
  • Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

What if you've lost every Honda key?

Losing every key is the situation people dread, and on most Hondas it's more manageable than expected. Hondas are among the most locksmith-friendly cars: every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port, most models don't need a manufacturer PIN code, and Honda doesn't generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In practice, most all-keys-lost jobs are done right at your car.

There are two honest caveats. On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU, which takes more time. On the Hitag-AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V/Pilot/HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current pro tools such as the Autel IM-series cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up.

That's why we confirm coverage by VIN before quoting. If yours turns out to be a dealer-only case, we'll tell you plainly instead of starting work we can't finish. More detail is on our lost car key replacement page for Lomita.

What commonly goes wrong with Honda keys?

These are the faults we run into most on Hondas, and several are fixable without a full replacement.

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning. Sometimes the lock is the problem, not the key.
  • Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs (through 2000-2001) are frequent theft targets, since any hardware-store copy starts them.
  • Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash says 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a battery before replacing the fob, and see our key fob replacement in Lomita page if that doesn't help.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but won't start the engine.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently, and a flashing green key (immobilizer) light from antenna-ring or chip faults.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Lomita?

We won't throw out a figure before knowing your car, and nobody honest should. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart fob are very different products.
  • Model year and platform: the Hitag-AES 4A generation involves different tools and more checking than a Honda G chip car.
  • Whether you hold a working key: adding a spare while you still have one is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • Age of the system: the earliest Megamos-13 cars may need extended procedures or bench work.
  • Ignition condition: if worn wafers are the real problem, the lock may need repair or replacement.
  • Memory-linked keys: extra steps on trims with Driver 1 / Driver 2 settings.
  • Time of day and distance: Lomita is about 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, and a middle-of-the-night call differs from a daytime appointment.

Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Honda?

A Honda dealer is a perfectly good option for some cars. If your Honda is a very new model year on the Hitag-AES 4A platform and aftermarket tools haven't caught up, the dealer may be the only route, and we'll tell you that. If you'd rather deal with the dealer, that's your call, and a dealer can't easily come to you.

For most other Hondas, a locksmith is simpler. We come to the car, so there's no tow and no waiting for a service appointment. We program through the OBD-II port, and most Honda models don't need a manufacturer PIN code.

The practical test is this: give us the year, model and VIN, and we'll say whether we can do it at your curb. Our broader Honda key information has more on how the brand's systems work.

Honda key help around Lomita

We serve Lomita's ZIP code, 90717, and the areas around it: the Narbonne Avenue corridor, the Pacific Coast Highway corridor and the Lomita Boulevard corridor, plus spots near Harbor Hills, near Walteria in Torrance and near Harbor City. Whether the Honda is parked near Lomita City Hall, around Lomita Park, close to the Lomita Railroad Museum, or near the PCH and Narbonne intersection, we meet you where it sits.

The climate here is easy on car locks. The marine layer brings dampness but only mild salt-air exposure, so key trouble is more often plain wear than corrosion. Frequently asked questions

Can you come to my Honda in Lomita at night?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans work at any hour. Call (213) 577-1366 with the year and model and we'll take it from there.

Do I need a PIN code from Honda to get a new key?

Usually not. Most Honda models don't require a manufacturer PIN code, and the immobilizer programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. We confirm the specifics for your VIN first.

Why won't my new Honda key start the car even though it opens the door?

Most likely the key was cut without a transponder, or the chip hasn't been programmed to the car. Hardware-store copies commonly do this. It can also be a low-quality cloned chip failing intermittently.

My Honda says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Often it's a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade should still open the door. Replace the battery first. If the message persists, the fob or the car's antenna system needs diagnosis.

Can you make a key for a 2023 Civic or CR-V?

Those fall on the Hitag-AES 4A platform, where aftermarket add-a-key coverage came before all-keys-lost coverage. Pro tools now cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only. We confirm coverage by VIN before quoting.

Is a spare key really worth getting before I lose the last one?

Yes. Adding a key while you still hold a working one is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost situation, and it avoids the extra steps some older and newer Hondas need.

My old Civic or CR-V has a plain key. Is that a problem?

Civics through 2000 and CR-Vs through 2001 have no immobilizer chip, so any hardware-store copy will start them. That's convenient for you but also a reason these years are frequent theft targets. Keep that in mind when you hand out copies.

What should I ask any locksmith before they start work?

Ask for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license. Also ask what applies to your car's key system and what factors affect the final cost.
