Mercedes-Benz key replacement in Lancaster

Wilshire Lock & Key makes Mercedes-Benz keys for Lancaster owners with mobile service, answered 24/7 at (213) 577-1366. Older SmartKey and Chrome key cars (FBS3) we can usually handle at the curb, including all keys lost. Newer FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only, and we'll tell you that up front.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Lancaster usually need?

Most of the Mercedes calls we hear from the Antelope Valley fall into a few groups. Someone has one key that is wearing out and wants a spare before it quits. Someone has lost the only key. Or the car simply will not recognize the key it has, and the owner assumes the key is bad when the real problem is somewhere else in the ignition system.

Where it happens matters. Lancaster is a spread-out city, and a lot of these calls come from driveways in the larger stucco tract homes on the westside (93536) and from ranch-home streets in central and east Lancaster. Others come from apartment complexes near downtown and along the lettered avenues, where the car is parked in a shared lot and the key is in a pocket two miles away. We also get car key calls near Antelope Valley College, and lockouts in the west Lancaster tracts around Avenue K and 30th Street West.

The car is rarely the hard part of those calls. The hard part is figuring out which generation of Mercedes key system you have, because that decides whether a specialist locksmith can help or whether the car has to go through the dealer. We would rather tell you that on the phone than after a van has driven out to you.

  • One key left and you want a spare made before the second one is lost
  • Every key lost, car parked at home, work, or a shared apartment lot
  • Key not recognized, or it goes in but will not turn
  • Remote buttons dead, or a 'key not detected' message on a Keyless-Go car
  • Cracked key shell, worn buttons, or a snapped emergency blade

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

We bring the work to your car. Lancaster is about 67 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, so a call from here is a real dispatch from one company, not a handoff to a stranger. The person you reach on (213) 577-1366 works for us, and the van that comes out is ours. When you call, ask for a realistic arrival window and we will give you an honest one based on where our vans are that day.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour. Tell us the model, the year, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. We narrow down the key system. A VIN is the cleanest way to confirm it, especially for late-production cars where the year alone does not settle it.
  3. If the car is serviceable by a locksmith, we tell you what is involved and what drives the cost, and we come to the car.
  4. At the curb we confirm ownership, read the ignition system, and work out the key data with professional tools.
  5. We create and program the new key, then test it: start the car, run the remote functions, and check the emergency blade.
  6. If the car turns out to be dealer-only, we say so plainly and explain how the dealer process runs, so you are not paying for a trip that cannot finish the job.

Which Mercedes key do you have? The key eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes-Benz we work with uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. There is no simple clonable chip like on a Toyota. The key and the car exchange rolling codes, and that changes how replacement works.

From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 generation. The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or a black SmartKey that inserts into the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) and twists. Key and car talk over infrared.

Then Mercedes moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule rather than all at once. The facelifted W212 E-Class switched from April 2013 production. The CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) switched from November 2014. New platforms came in with FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253), and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

  • Late 1990s to roughly 2014: FBS3, infrared Chrome key or black SmartKey that twists in the ignition
  • FBS4: facelifted W212 from April 2013 production, CLA/GLA from November 2014, then S-Class, C-Class, GLC, and E-Class from launch
  • Most W166 ML/GLE stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but Mercedes' own bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4

Why a late ML or GLE gets checked by VIN

This is the one place where owners get surprised. Most W166 ML and GLE models stayed on FBS3 until production ended in 2019. But Mercedes' fallback-process bulletin (S-B-80.57/62e) lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. In other words, the year and model alone do not settle it for those cars.

So we do not guess. If you drive a late ML or GLE, we confirm the system by VIN or in person before anyone promises you anything. That costs you a minute on the phone and saves you from being told 'yes, we can do it' by someone who has not checked.

What can a locksmith do on FBS3 Mercedes cars?

FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 through 2014, plus most GLE/W166 models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, are fully serviceable by specialist locksmiths. Professional tools from makers such as Xhorse (VVDI MB), Abrites, and Autel (IM-series) read the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate new keys.

That includes all-keys-lost situations. On W204 C-Class, W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is also needed, which adds work and is one reason those cars take more time at the curb than a simple spare.

One honest caution: a Mercedes that will not accept a key is not always a bad key. The electronic ignition itself can fail or wear, and on the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class the electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor can fail. The dash wakes up, the key goes in, and it will not turn, which looks exactly like a dead key. We check that before cutting you a new one, because a new key will not fix a failed steering lock.

What happens if you lost every Mercedes key?

All keys lost is a normal job on FBS3 cars, but it takes more steps than adding a spare because there is no working key to learn from. We read the ignition system, work out the key data, and build a new key from scratch. On certain chassis the steering-lock emulator is part of that work.

On FBS4 cars, a lost key is a different conversation. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and plan around it. Limited specialist capability for FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something to count on, and we will not pretend otherwise.

If you are stuck in a lot or a driveway, our lost car key replacement in Lancaster page walks through what to gather first: registration, ID, and the VIN. For a car that is simply locked with the key inside, car lockout service in Lancaster is a different and usually quicker job.

  • Have the VIN, registration, and photo ID ready before you call
  • Tell us if any key, even a damaged one, still exists
  • Say whether the car starts with a push button or with a key that twists in the dash

Dealer or locksmith for a Mercedes key: what is the fair answer?

It depends on the car, and neither side is always right. For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith can do the work at the vehicle, which usually means no tow and no waiting for a dealer appointment. That is often the more economical route and almost always the more convenient one.

For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the realistic path for added or replacement keys. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands. If your car is FBS4 and you have lost every key, we will say so right away, and you can start the dealer order without paying us for a visit that cannot finish the job.

Where we can still help with an FBS4 car is the stuff around the key: a dead fob battery, a cracked shell, or a worn emergency blade. If you only need that, key fob replacement in Lancaster covers the fob side, and the general car key replacement in Lancaster page covers other makes. Our Mercedes-Benz key page has the wider model picture.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes key in Lancaster?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because honest Mercedes pricing depends on specifics that are not on this page. These are the things that actually move the cost:

  • The key system. FBS3 work is done by us at the car. FBS4 involves a dealer order, and that cost structure is separate from ours.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is a shorter job than all keys lost.
  • The chassis. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars, the steering-lock emulator adds work.
  • The type of key. A Chrome key, a black SmartKey, and a Keyless-Go key are different parts.
  • Time and place. A call at 2 a.m. at the edge of the valley is different from a daytime visit to a driveway on the westside.
  • Other faults. If the ignition or steering lock is failing, that is a separate repair from the key itself.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes in Lancaster?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Lancaster included. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and you deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the call to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we work, including what we will and will not promise on a given car.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car, including us. It is a fair question and a good filter.

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. You can also use the contact page if you would rather write, and the car keys overview has more on other makes.

Mercedes key calls around Lancaster: neighborhoods and ZIP codes

Lancaster covers ZIP codes 93534, 93535, and 93536, and the car-key calls are spread across them. In the westside tracts and the West Lancaster area near Avenue K and 30th Street West, cars usually sit in driveways and garages, and lockouts often happen when keys are left in a car or jacket. In Downtown Lancaster and the BLVD district, plus the apartment complexes along the lettered avenues, a shared lot makes a lost key more stressful because the car cannot easily be moved.

East Lancaster, El Dorado, Joshua, Lincoln, Mariposa, and Piute are mostly postwar ranch streets laid out on a grid, and Desert View sits in the north of the city. Quartz Hill and Antelope Acres are nearby but partly or fully unincorporated, and we are happy to talk through those addresses on the phone. Car key replacement near Antelope Valley College is a call we know well.

The high desert adds its own wrinkle. Triple-digit summer heat, sub-freezing winter nights, and strong winds with blowing dust make a lockout more than an inconvenience. If a Mercedes is stuck in a lot at the wrong hour, we would rather get it sorted properly than rush it. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key in Lancaster if I lost all my keys?

If the car is FBS3, which covers roughly 2000 to 2014 and most W166 ML/GLE models through 2019 once the VIN confirms it, yes. We can generate new keys at the car. If the car is FBS4, it is effectively dealer-only, and we will tell you that on the phone.

How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year and model usually tell most of the story, but late-production cars can be tricky, especially the W166 ML/GLE. Give us the VIN and we confirm the system before promising anything. Push-button start is a hint that the car may be FBS4, but the VIN is what settles it.

Why will my Mercedes key not turn when the dash lights up?

It may not be the key. On W204 C-Class and W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor can behave exactly like a bad key. The ignition itself can also fail or wear. We check that before making a new key.

Does Mercedes-Benz require the dealer for key replacement?

For FBS4 cars, effectively yes. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN with proof of ownership, and Mercedes requires the car to be registered in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. Expect a multi-day wait. FBS3 cars are fully serviceable by specialist locksmiths.

Can you fix a Mercedes key fob that stopped working?

Often, yes. Remote buttons usually die first when the battery is weak, and on Keyless-Go cars you may then see a 'key not detected' message. Cracked shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades are also common repairs. A key that has worn out and stopped syncing after years of daily use may need replacing.

What should I have ready when I call about a Mercedes key?

The VIN, your registration, photo ID, and the car's location. Tell us whether any key still exists and whether the car starts with a push button or a twist key. That lets us tell you right away whether the job is ours or the dealer's.

How much will a Mercedes key cost?

We do not quote prices on the website because they depend on the key system, whether you have a working key, the chassis, the type of key, and the time and place of the call. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will walk through what applies to your car.

Do you come to me anywhere in Lancaster?

We run mobile vans and serve Lancaster, including the 93534, 93535, and 93536 ZIP codes. If your address is in a partly unincorporated area like Quartz Hill or near Antelope Acres, mention it when you call and we will confirm.

Is Wilshire Lock & Key a real local company?

Yes. We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024, and mobile vans. David is the owner and lead technician. Ask any locksmith, us included, for their BSIS LCO license, which California requires.
