What counts as a key fob, and which one do you have?

People say 'key fob' for three different things, and the difference changes how the replacement is done. Some vehicles use a remote-head key: a metal blade that turns in the ignition, with lock and unlock buttons built into the head. Others use a separate remote fob that rides along with a plain-looking key. Newer vehicles use a smart key, also called a proximity key. It stays in your pocket, the car senses it, and a push-button start does the rest.

Whatever it's called, the inside has the same jobs: a radio transmitter for the buttons and, in most cases, a security chip the vehicle must recognize before it will start. Two fobs that look identical on the outside can be different on the inside. So we match by your vehicle's VIN and the fob's actual frequency and chip type, not by shape alone. If your vehicle uses a chipped metal key with no buttons at all, that's closer to transponder key programming, and we handle that as well.

What happens when a fob dies or disappears in Lancaster?

The calls we hear usually fall into a few groups. The only fob is lost. The case has cracked and the buttons no longer register. The fob went through the wash in a jeans pocket. Or the car simply stopped recognizing it one morning and the push-button start does nothing.

Lancaster is not gentle on small electronics. The Antelope Valley sits in high desert at about 2,350 feet, with triple-digit summer heat, sub-freezing winter nights and frequent wind that carries fine dust. We can't promise any particular fob will fail because of that. But plastic cases, rubber button pads and coin batteries have a hard life when they sit on a sun-baked dashboard or get dragged through dusty parking lots and back again.

Before anything else, try a fresh battery. A surprising number of fobs that seem dead just need one, and if that's all it is, we'll say so on the phone rather than send a van. Many smart keys also have a backup method, such as holding the fob against a marked spot on the steering column or start button, so check your owner's manual.

If the fob is locked inside the vehicle, the first job is getting you in, and that's a car lockout call. The fob work comes after.

How do we replace and program a key fob?

The process is the same whether you're parked in a driveway or a shopping center lot. Here is how it goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. We ask for the year, make and model, whether the car has a push-button start, and how many working keys or fobs you still have.
  2. We work out the fob type and whether the job can be done on site. Some vehicles can't. If yours is one of them, we say so plainly instead of sending a van for nothing.
  3. A mobile technician comes to your vehicle. We ask for proof that the car is yours, normally your ID and registration or title matching the vehicle.
  4. If your system uses a mechanical emergency key, we cut it. Smart keys carry a hidden blade for this purpose.
  5. We program the new fob to your vehicle, usually through its diagnostic port with specialized equipment. On vehicles that require it, we also re-register your existing fobs so everything works together.
  6. We test every function: lock, unlock, trunk or hatch, remote start if your car has it, and starting the engine with the fob. We test the old fob too, if you still have one.
  7. Where the vehicle allows it, we can remove a lost fob from the car's memory so it can no longer start the vehicle. We'll explain what's possible on your model.

Why does a new fob sometimes not fix the problem?

Occasionally the fob is not the culprit. If a freshly programmed fob turns the dash lights on but the car still won't start, or the key hangs in the ignition, the trouble may be in the ignition cylinder or the car's electronics. That's a different repair, and it falls under ignition repair. We'd rather find that out in your driveway and tell you honestly than keep programming fobs that were never the issue.

Should you get a spare key fob before you lose the only one?

Yes, if you can. Making a spare key fob while you still have a working one is usually the more economical route. The car can read the working key, nothing has to be bypassed, and nobody is racing the clock. When every key is gone, the job gets more involved, and it's covered separately under lost car key replacement.

A spare is also useful in less dramatic ways. It gives a second driver their own fob and gives you something to leave with a trusted person. It also means a cracked case or flat battery doesn't take the car off the road. If you're not sure whether you need a new fob, a spare, or a different key type altogether, our page on car key replacement covers the full range, and we can sort it out on the phone.

What affects the cost of key fob replacement in Lancaster?

We don't quote a number without knowing your vehicle, and neither should anyone else. These are the real factors that move the cost of a fob job:

  • The vehicle itself. Year, make and model determine which fob is compatible and how involved the programming is.
  • The fob type. A basic remote costs the shop less than a smart key with a proximity chip and push-button start.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually simpler than starting from zero after every key is lost.
  • New or reused hardware. Aftermarket and original-equipment fobs differ, and some vehicles accept only certain ones.
  • Emergency blade cutting. Smart keys with a hidden mechanical key need it cut and checked.
  • Where and when you need us. Lancaster is about 67 miles from our Westwood storefront, so travel is a real part of the job, and after-hours calls are handled differently from planned appointments.
  • Extra work found on site. If the problem turns out to be the ignition or the vehicle's wiring, that's a separate repair, and we tell you before starting it.

When is the dealer the only option?

Not every vehicle can be handled by a mobile locksmith. Some newer models, and some from certain manufacturers, lock down key programming so that it must go through the dealer, or require factory access that independent shops can't get. In other cases the information we find about a specific model is incomplete or conflicting, and we won't guess.

So we confirm by VIN and, when needed, in person before we promise anything. If your car is dealer-only, we'll tell you that on the call. Otherwise you might pay for a trip that ends with nothing programmed. If it turns out we can cut or provide the pieces but the dealer must finish, we'll say that too. A straight answer early saves you more than a hopeful guess does.

Key fob help around Lancaster: where we get calls

Our vans cover all of Lancaster's three ZIP codes, 93534, 93535 and 93536, and the surrounding area. Where you are shapes how the call goes.

In west Lancaster, particularly the tract-home streets around Avenue K and 30th Street West in 93536, homes are larger, 1980s through 2000s stucco tract construction, and the car is typically in a driveway or garage. That's an easy setup for us: the vehicle is right there, power is nearby, and a fob job can often be done at the curb. The same goes for the postwar ranch-home streets of central and East Lancaster, where cars sit on grid-street driveways or at the curb.

Near Antelope Valley College, car key replacement is a scenario we plan for. A student or staff member loses a fob and is stuck in a campus lot or on a nearby street. If that's you, the van comes to the vehicle. You don't need to tow it anywhere.

Downtown Lancaster and The BLVD district see people parked on the street while at work or shopping, and apartment residents in the complexes near downtown often park in shared lots. Out in Quartz Hill, Desert View, El Dorado or toward Antelope Acres, you may be on a longer rural drive, and distance matters; tell us exactly where the car is when you call.

Wind and dust come up in this work too. If your fob buttons have gotten gritty or sticky, we can often tell whether it needs a new shell or battery, or a full replacement.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for key fobs?

We've been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. That experience means we've seen most of the situations a fob call can turn into, including the ones that start as a dead battery and end up as an ignition problem.

We operate from a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans. The person who answers is part of the same company that sends the van. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your call to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. You can reach us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at (213) 577-1366, and if you want a sense of how our after-hours coverage works, see our 24-hour locksmith service in Lancaster.

You should also know that California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith who shows up for it, and verify it with the state. That's good advice for any trade work on your vehicle.

For the broader picture of what we do on vehicles, see our automotive locksmith page. And if you'd rather have us come to you than drive anywhere, our mobile locksmith service is built for that.

What should you have ready when you call?

A few details speed everything up and help us give you an honest answer on the first call.

  • Year, make and model, and the trim if you know it.
  • The VIN, visible through the windshield at the driver's corner of the dashboard and on your registration or insurance card.
  • Whether the car has a push-button start, and whether you see a keyhole anywhere.
  • How many working fobs or keys you still have, even if one is worn or cracked.
  • Where the car is parked, with a cross street or landmark, and whether it's locked, running or stuck.
  • Photo ID and registration or title for the vehicle, available when we arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a key fob if I've lost every key to my car?

In many cases, yes, but it depends on the vehicle. All-keys-lost jobs are more involved than adding a spare, and some vehicles require dealer-level steps. Give us the VIN and we'll confirm what's possible before sending anyone.

Do you come to me in Lancaster, or do I have to bring the car in?

We come to you. Our mobile vans handle fob work at your home, workplace or wherever the car is parked in Lancaster. Some vehicles can't be done on site, and we say so early.

How much does a replacement key fob cost?

It depends on your vehicle, the fob type, whether you have a working key, and how far we travel. We don't give blind numbers, but once we know the car and the situation, we'll explain what you're paying for.

Can you program a fob I bought online?

Sometimes. Online fobs vary a lot, and some have the wrong chip or frequency, or are locked to another vehicle. If you already have one, tell us the details on the phone and we'll tell you whether it's likely to work.

What's the difference between a remote fob and a push-to-start smart key?

A remote fob sends a signal when you press a button, and you still use a blade in the ignition. A smart key, also called a proximity key, is sensed by the car, so you can unlock and start with a push button without taking it out of your pocket.

My fob stopped working. Do I need a new one?

Try a fresh battery first, and check your manual for the backup start method. If that doesn't help, the fob may be damaged or have lost its connection to the car. Call us and we can usually tell which from a short conversation.

Can a lost fob be blocked from starting my car?

On many vehicles, yes. When we program a new fob, we can often remove the lost one from the car's memory. Whether it's possible depends on the make and model, and we confirm that for your car.

Will you need proof the car is mine?

Yes. We'll ask for ID and registration or title matching the vehicle. It protects you, since we shouldn't make keys to someone else's car, and it's standard practice for a responsible locksmith.

Do you work on nights and weekends in Lancaster?

Yes. Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and we send mobile technicians to Lancaster for after-hours fob calls.
