What do Kia owners in Irwindale usually need?

Irwindale is a small city with a large footprint. Fewer than 2,000 people live here, in a few small enclaves of modest single-family homes near the Civic Center along Arrow Highway. Most of the land is gravel quarries, warehouses and manufacturing plants. That shapes the car-key calls we expect: fewer driveway problems, more cars sitting in work lots, park-and-rides and recreation parking.

Two places stand out. One is the Irwindale A Line park-and-ride, where a Kia can sit all day while its owner is on the train, and where a lost or broken key becomes a real problem by evening. The other is the parking lots at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, where a key locked inside a car after a day outdoors is exactly the kind of call a lot like that produces. If your key is simply locked in the car, our car lockout service in Irwindale page covers that separately.

Most Kia owners who call us need one of a handful of things:

  • A spare made while a working key still exists
  • A replacement after the only key was lost
  • A new flip key or smart fob after a broken shell or dead remote
  • A key matched to a new ignition lock after a theft attempt
  • A locked-out car opened so the day can continue

What usually goes wrong with Kia keys?

Kia keys fail in fairly predictable ways, and the symptom tells us a lot before we ever see the car.

A sticky key is worth acting on early. Replacing a worn key before the lock gives up is usually the more economical route. If the fob is your problem, our key fob replacement in Irwindale page explains that side in more detail.

  • Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars: broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks from the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. A stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars, so the key sticks or will not turn.
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries: the car reports 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Hardware-store copies, which start no-immobilizer Kias fine but will not start an immobilizer-equipped car without programming.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently.

How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?

We bring the equipment to the car, wherever it is parked in Irwindale. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 32 miles away, so we are not around the corner. We would rather give you a realistic arrival window when you call than a promise we cannot keep. The phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The full picture of what we do for Kias in town sits on our Irwindale car key replacement page. The short version of a visit looks like this:

  1. You call and describe the car: year, model, trim, whether it has a push-button start or a turn key, and whether any working key still exists.
  2. We narrow down the key type from that description and confirm it against the VIN wherever the car's details leave any doubt.
  3. We confirm you are the owner or an authorized driver, with ID and registration or other proof the car is yours.
  4. At the car, we cut the key (from the door or ignition if every key is gone) and program it through the OBD-II port if the car needs that.
  5. We test the key in the door, the ignition or start button, the remote buttons and any spare before we pack up.

Which Kia key era is your car in?

Kia's US key history has three arcs, and which one your car sits in decides most of the method and cost.

Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. But at least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. So for 2022 and 2023 especially, we do not go by model year alone. We confirm by VIN and in person. For a wider look across models, see our Kia key guide.

  • Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys or, where an immobilizer was fitted, early chips. That means Texas 4D-60 on some 2001-2006 models, then Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
  • 2011-2021 (and some 2022) turn-key cars: most have no immobilizer at all, as documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts them.
  • Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s, Hitag 3 / ID47 roughly 2016-2020, then NXP Hitag-AES ('4A') and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) on 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD.

How are Kia keys programmed, and what is the no-immobilizer catch?

If your Kia is from the no-immobilizer era, no transponder programming is needed. A mechanically cut key starts it, and only the keyless-entry remote, where one is fitted, needs OBD programming. That is why a hardware-store copy can work perfectly on one Kia and fail completely on another that looks identical from outside.

Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN obtained from the VIN, a dealer or KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access. The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current pro tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job.

One more question owners ask: Kia's post-theft-wave anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.

What if I have lost every Kia key?

It is stressful, but it is usually solvable at the car. What we do depends on the era. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, we can cut a new key to the car without programming a chip, and a remote, if you want one, is a separate step. On an immobilizer Kia, we program a new key to the car through the OBD-II port, and the PIN question above decides how straightforward that is.

Here are the honest limits. On the newest platforms and facelift years, we confirm what is possible for your VIN before we tell you it is a done deal. If a specific car turns out to be dealer-only, we say so plainly before any work starts, not after. If the car was stolen and recovered with a wrecked ignition, expect the lock to need replacing first. Our lost car key replacement in Irwindale page walks through the general process.

What affects the cost of a Kia key in Irwindale?

We do not put numbers on a web page, because a Kia key is not one product. The honest answer is the list of things that move the price:

Usually the more economical route is a spare made while you still have a working key, since it skips all-keys-lost work. We talk through the quote with you before we start working.

  • Key era: a plain mechanical key for a no-immobilizer car is a very different job from a Hitag-AES smart key.
  • Key type: standard blade, flip key or push-button smart key, and whether the remote is part of the job.
  • Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost: having a working key left simplifies things on many models.
  • PIN or server access: whether the car needs a Kia PIN, and how we have to get it.
  • Ignition condition: worn wafers or theft damage may mean the lock needs repair or replacement, which is separate from the key itself.
  • Number of keys, and the quality of parts: low-quality clones are where intermittent failures come from.
  • When you call and where the car is: hour of day and travel from our Westwood base are factors we explain on the phone.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense for your Kia?

A Kia dealer is a legitimate choice, and sometimes the right one. A dealer has factory access for the very newest models, which matters on facelift years where aftermarket tool support is still catching up. The tradeoff is logistics. With no working key, the car has to get to them, which can mean arranging a tow, and you work around their service hours.

A mobile locksmith comes to the car. For turn-key Kias with no immobilizer, and for the push-button generations current pro tools support, that is usually the more convenient route and often the more economical one. Where the dealer really is the only path for a given VIN, we will tell you.

Whoever you call, ask for their California BSIS LCO license number before they start work. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and any legitimate company should be willing to give it to you. That goes for us too.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Kia?

Where do we serve Kia owners around Irwindale?

We cover all of Irwindale, including ZIP codes 91706 and 91702. The small Civic Center residential enclave around Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue is where most of the city's homes are, so a spare or replacement key at a driveway is the usual call there. The Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue corridors carry the through traffic and workday parking. The Live Oak Avenue industrial district is where plants and warehouses have their own lots, and cars sit in them for long stretches. The Santa Fe Dam area, with its recreation parking, is the other end of the spectrum.

Landmarks help us find you fast: Irwindale City Hall, the Huy Fong Foods plant, the Irwindale A Line Station and the I-605/I-210 interchange. Give us the nearest one and a cross street, and we will find the car.

Summers here are hot inland-valley summers, which makes a lockout in an open lot a real discomfort, so we treat those calls seriously. Santa Ana winds periodically rake the San Gabriel River corridor, and quarry dust can work into exterior padlocks and gate hardware. That is a gate problem more than a car-key one, but if you run an equipment yard, we handle that work too. For the full list of what we do in town, see locksmith service in Irwindale.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Kia key if I have lost every one?

Usually yes, at the car. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia we cut a new key to the car. On an immobilizer model we program a new key through the OBD-II port. Some of the newest facelift years are confirmed by VIN first, and if one is dealer-only, we tell you before starting.

How do I know if my Kia has an immobilizer?

Push-button Kias always have one. Most 2011-2021 turn-key Kias, and some 2022 models, have none, but 2022 and 2023 can vary by trim. Give us the VIN and we confirm it rather than guess from the model year.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?

On a no-immobilizer Kia, a correctly cut copy starts the car. On an immobilizer Kia, it may turn in the lock but will not start the engine until a transponder key is programmed. Low-quality cloned chips can also fail intermittently, so a key that works one day and not the next is a warning sign.

My Kia says 'key not detected.' Is the fob dead?

Often it is just a weak battery in the smart fob. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you are not stuck outside. If a fresh battery does not clear the message, call us and we will look at the fob itself.

My Kia was stolen and recovered. What does it need?

A 2011-2022 turn-key Kia hit in the theft wave usually has a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock, and the lock typically needs replacing. Keys then have to match the new lock. We can tell you what your car needs once we see the damage.

Does Kia's anti-theft software update change how my key works?

No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so your keys are cut and programmed the same way as before.

Do you come to the Irwindale A Line park-and-ride or the Santa Fe Dam lots?

Yes. Our vans meet you wherever the Kia is parked in Irwindale, including the A Line park-and-ride and the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area parking lots. Tell us the lot and the nearest entrance and we will find you.

How much does a Kia key cost in Irwindale?

It depends on key era, key type, whether you still have a working key, PIN access and the condition of the ignition. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year, model and trim, and we will talk through the quote before any work begins.
