What do Kia owners in Inglewood usually call us for?
Most Kia calls in Inglewood fall into a few groups: a lost key, a key that is broken or stuck in the ignition, a smart fob that has stopped working, or a car locked with the key inside. Where the call comes from says a lot. Inglewood is mostly renters, with a large apartment stock along the Century Boulevard and La Brea corridors, so many of these calls start in a residential parking area or at the curb outside a building, not in a driveway with a spare key hanging inside the house.
Then there are event days. SoFi Stadium, the Kia Forum and Intuit Dome all draw crowds, and car lockouts in the parking areas around them are a regular part of the local picture. A Kia locked with the fob inside, or a key lost somewhere between the gate and the seat, is a rough way to end a night out. We come to the car wherever it is parked. Be aware that event traffic slows everyone down, us included, so tell us the lot and the nearest gate or cross street when you call.
If you are simply locked out and the key is still inside the car, that is a different job from replacing a key. Our Inglewood car lockout service page covers it. This page is about making a key you do not have, or one that no longer works.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Everything happens where your Kia is parked. We do not ask you to tow the car anywhere first. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 11 miles from Inglewood, and the vans carry the cutting and programming equipment to you.
- Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us the model, the year, whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, and how many working keys you still have.
- We work out what the car needs before we drive. Year and ignition type usually tell us whether there is an immobilizer. Where the data is unclear or conflicting, we confirm by VIN or in person instead of guessing.
- A van comes to the car: an apartment lot, a curb, a workplace, or a stadium parking area.
- We confirm you are entitled to the car. Expect to show ID and something that ties you to the vehicle, such as registration or title.
- We cut the key, then program it and any remote through the OBD-II port if the car needs it.
- We test everything before we leave: the door lock, the ignition or push-button start, the remote buttons, and the trunk. If you only had one key, we will talk through making a spare while we are there.

Call (213) 577-1366Which kind of Kia key do you have?
Kia keys fall into three rough eras, and the era decides almost everything about the job. This is the plain-language version.
Model year alone does not settle it, because changeovers differ by model and trim. We check your exact year and VIN.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Some 2001-2006 models use Texas 4D-60 chips. From the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s, the common chip is the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2).
- The no-immobilizer era: most 2011-2021 US Kias with a turn-key ignition, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts these cars.
- Push-button trims: these always carried a full immobilizer. Early-2010s smart keys use ID46. Roughly 2016-2020 moved to Hitag 3 / ID47.
- Newer platforms: 2019-and-newer models such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD use NXP Hitag-AES (4A) or Texas DST-AES (H-8A / ID75) systems.
- The 2022 model year: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during this year. At least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent, so we verify rather than assume.
How are Kia keys programmed?
If your Kia is from the no-immobilizer era, the car itself needs no transponder programming. A mechanically cut key starts it. Only the keyless-entry remote, where one is fitted, needs to be programmed through the OBD port.
Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which comes from the VIN, from a dealer or KDealer account, or through NASTF-credentialed access. Which route applies depends on the car.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current professional tools for adding a key and for most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job.
One more point: Kia's anti-theft software update, released after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. It has no effect on how your keys are cut or programmed.
What if I have lost every key to my Kia?
Losing every key is the hardest version of this job, but how hard depends on which era your car is from. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, we make a mechanical key that works the lock and the ignition, and the car needs no programming. That is often the simplest outcome and the lighter-cost route.
On an immobilizer-equipped Kia, a new key has to be introduced to the car. We do that through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Depending on the model and year, it may need a PIN from the VIN, a dealer account, or credentialed access. For the 2019-and-newer smart systems, current tools handle most all-keys-lost work. For the newest facelift years, we confirm what is possible on the day of the job and tell you plainly if a particular car is dealer-only.
If you still have one working key, call before you lose it. Adding a key to a car that still has one is usually the more economical route. Our lost car key replacement in Inglewood page walks through the lost-key scenario in more detail.

Call (213) 577-1366What goes wrong with Kia keys and ignitions?
These are the problems we see on Kias, roughly in the order they come up.
- Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars. The 'Kia Boys' theft wave left broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks. A stolen-and-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a key.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars. The key sticks, drags, or will not turn. A fresh key sometimes helps, but a worn lock may need to be replaced.
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons. The remote may still work, and the key may only need a new shell and blade, not a whole new unit.
- Dead smart-fob batteries. The dash says 'key not detected', but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. A battery swap often solves it.
- Hardware-store copies. These start no-immobilizer Kias fine but will not start immobilizer-equipped cars until the chip is programmed.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a while and then fail intermittently. If a key has been cutting out, this is often why.
How much does Kia key replacement cost in Inglewood?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a flat figure would be wrong for most of the cars it was meant to describe. These are the things that actually move the cost:
- Whether your Kia has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer key is a cutting job. An immobilizer key adds a chip, programming, and sometimes PIN access.
- The type of key: a plain blade, a flip key with a remote, or a push-button smart key. Smart keys cost more to supply than a basic blade.
- Adding a key versus all keys lost. When you still have a working key, the work is usually simpler.
- Whether a PIN or server access is needed for your model year, and what that route involves.
- Damage to the ignition lock or steering column, which is a separate repair from the key.
- When and where you need us, including late-night calls and event-day locations.
Should I use the dealer or a mobile locksmith for my Kia key?
A dealer is a fair option. It can order a key by VIN, and for some of the newest models it is the place that has the access. The tradeoffs are practical. Your Kia usually has to get there, which can mean a tow if you have no key, and you work to the dealer's schedule.
A mobile locksmith comes to the car, and for most Kias on the road in Inglewood, the work can be done on the spot. That is where we are strong: the 2000s and 2010s cars, no-immobilizer turn-key models, and many push-button systems. For the newest facelift years, we confirm per job. If a particular Kia can only be done through the dealer, we will tell you before any work starts, and we will not take your money for work we cannot finish.
If you are not sure which route fits your car, call and describe it. A straight answer costs nothing.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd with mobile service vans, not a call center. When you phone (213) 577-1366, you reach us, and the work is done by our own technicians, not passed along to a dispatch middleman who found your address on a list.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, which matters for a lost key at midnight after an event.
One note on licensing. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Whoever you call, ask for their license number before they start. It is a fair question, and a reasonable locksmith will not mind it.
Kia key service across Inglewood's neighborhoods
Inglewood covers ZIP codes 90301, 90302, 90303, 90304 and 90305, and we work across all of them. That includes the older bungalow streets of Fairview Heights and Morningside Park, and the apartment buildings along the Century Boulevard and La Brea corridors, where a lot of Kias live in shared parking areas. We also cover Downtown Inglewood around Market Street, North Inglewood, Arbor Village, Lockhaven, Crenshaw-Imperial and Inglewood Knolls.
Closer to SoFi Stadium, the Hollywood Park development is adding newer condominium and apartment buildings. We also get calls from people parked near Centinela Hospital Medical Center or Edward Vincent Jr. Park who have found themselves without a working key.
The climate is easy on keys. Inglewood sits a few miles inland, with marine-layer mornings but little direct salt exposure, so the effects on locks and hardware are modest. Most worn Kia keys here come from daily use and age, not corrosion.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need to tow my Kia to make a new key?
No. We come to the car and do the work on site, whether it is parked at an apartment building, at the curb, or in a lot near a stadium. The exception is a model that can only be handled through the dealer. If your Kia is one of those, we will say so before starting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?
It depends on the car. A copy cut correctly will start most 2011-2021 turn-key Kias, because those generally have no immobilizer. It will not start an immobilizer-equipped Kia unless the chip is programmed to the car. Push-button Kias always have an immobilizer.
My Kia is a turn-key car from the 2010s. Does the new key need programming?
Most likely not for the car itself. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. If you want a remote for the locks, that remote is programmed through the OBD port. We confirm by VIN because changeovers vary by model and year.
My dash says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Often the battery is just dead. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door, and a fresh battery frequently fixes the message. If the fob still fails after that, the fob itself or its programming may be the issue, and we can check it.
My Kia was stolen and recovered. Do I need a new key?
You probably need a new ignition lock first. Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key Kias often means a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock. We can look at the car and tell you what is damaged and what is not.
Does Kia's anti-theft software update change my keys?
No. The update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic. Keys are still cut and programmed the same way, based on your car's year and system.
Can you make keys for a new Kia, 2023 or later?
Often yes, but we confirm per job for the newest years. Immobilizers became standard during the 2022 model year, though at least one published 2023 spec sheet still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. Give us the VIN when you call, and we will tell you plainly if a car is dealer-only.
What do I need to show you before you make a key?
Expect to show ID and something that connects you to the vehicle, such as registration or title. It protects you as the owner and is a normal part of legitimate key work.
Can you help on event days near SoFi Stadium, the Kia Forum or Intuit Dome?
Yes, the phone is answered around the clock. Tell us the lot and the nearest gate or cross street. Event traffic slows every vehicle on the road, so we cannot promise how long anyone will take to arrive on a crowded night.
