What do Honda owners in Hidden Hills typically need?

Hidden Hills is an entirely gated, guarded city of large-lot equestrian estates. Many properties began as 1950s and 1960s ranch houses and have since been rebuilt as much larger custom homes. It is common for a lot to have its own driveway gate, a barn and guest structures on top of the staffed community gates. That layout shapes how Honda key trouble actually shows up here.

Cars here rarely sit in one place. A Honda gets parked by the main house, by a guest house, near the barn or out by the bridle-trail side of a property, and the key travels with whoever is working around the grounds. A key set down in a tack room or dropped in a paddock is easy to lose. The Honda that a family member or a member of the household staff drives may also be the one with only a single working key left.

There are no sidewalks or streetlights in the city. A lockout after dark means standing on a dark driveway or road with the key visible on the seat, or not visible at all. If you can, move toward a porch light or garage light before we arrive, since it makes the work easier.

Rebuilds and remodels add another wrinkle. Contractors, designers and delivery crews come and go for months, and a household's key set gets spread thin. If a Honda key goes missing in the middle of a project, we handle the car. If the house locks need attention as well, our Hidden Hills locksmith page covers the property side.

  • A spare key for a Honda that only has one key left
  • A replacement after a lost or stolen key
  • A key that sticks, jiggles or will not turn in the ignition
  • A smart fob that has gone dead, or a cracked remote-head shell
  • A lockout, with or without the keys in sight

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

Everything happens at your car. We bring cutting and programming equipment in the van, so you do not tow the Honda anywhere or sit in a waiting room. Hidden Hills is about 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, and travel to you is part of the job. We would rather tell you how that affects the visit on the phone than surprise you afterward.

Because the city is gated and guarded, tell us the address and any gate arrangements when you call, so we can be expected at the community gate and your driveway gate and are not stuck outside.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers any hour of any day. Give us the model, the year, the kind of key you have (or none) and the address.
  2. We work out what your Honda uses by model year, and by VIN where it matters, then tell you plainly whether this is a curb job or one that needs the dealer.
  3. We meet you at the car and confirm you own it. Expect to show your ID and the registration or title.
  4. We cut the key blade to fit your locks. If every key is gone, we work from the car itself.
  5. We program the key through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Then we test it: start the engine, lock and unlock, and run every remote function.
  6. If you want a spare, it is usually simpler to add it while the equipment is already connected than to schedule a second visit.

Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Honda did not switch to immobilizers all at once. The changeovers happened model by model, so the year on your registration matters more than the brand name. Here is the general picture, and we verify the exact year for your car by VIN.

One note: European-market catalogs list different chips for several late-1990s and early-2000s models. US cars follow the eras below.

  • Plain mechanical keys: several US Hondas kept them into the early 2000s, including the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Any hardware-store copy starts these cars.
  • First chip era, fixed-code Megamos 13: Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
  • Philips ID46 / Hitag 2 chip: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
  • Honda G chip (ID47 / Hitag 3): it starts with the 2013 Accord and spreads through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
  • Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's following redesign.
  • Newest platform, Hitag AES '4A' fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

What if you have lost every Honda key?

Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and most models do not need a PIN code from the manufacturer. So all keys lost on a Honda is usually a curb job, not a tow to the dealer. There are a few honest exceptions.

On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take more time than a typical key job, and we will say so before we start.

On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket coverage for all keys lost arrived later than coverage for adding a key. Current professional tools, including the Autel IM series, cover most of these vehicles. The newest model years can still be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage for your exact car before we quote, and if it is a dealer job we will tell you that instead of sending a van for nothing.

Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory settings add one more step. Each key has to be matched to the correct memory slot, or the seat and mirror positions will not recall the right way. We handle that during programming. If your Hidden Hills household shares one Honda among several drivers, tell us which key belongs to whom.

If your key is lost and you are not sure it is gone for good, our page on lost car key replacement in Hidden Hills walks through what to check first.

Which Honda key problems come up most often?

These are the patterns that show up most on Hondas, and several of them are cheaper to fix than people expect once the actual cause is found.

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling or stops turning. Sometimes the key is worn, sometimes the lock is, and we check both before replacing anything.
  • Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs through 2000-2001: they are frequent theft targets because any hardware-store copy starts them.
  • Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models. Sun and heat are hard on plastic, which does not help.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash says 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: they open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently.
  • A flashing green key light, which points to an antenna-ring or chip fault, not always a bad key.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Hidden Hills?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car and your situation. Here is what moves the cost, so the quote we give you on the phone makes sense.

If you only need a battery or a shell, the work is lighter than a full programmed key. Often that is the more economical route, and we will say so.

  • Model and year: this decides whether you have a mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key or a smart fob, and what equipment the job needs.
  • Spare versus all keys lost: adding a key to a car that still has one is simpler than building a key set from nothing.
  • Early or newest platforms: older Megamos-13 cars can need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest 4A cars can require extra tool coverage.
  • How many keys you want made: programming extra keys in the same visit is usually easier than coming back.
  • Memory-linked keys: Driver 1 and Driver 2 matching adds a step on certain Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims.
  • Ignition or lock repair: a worn ignition lock may need work before a new key will behave.
  • Travel and timing: Hidden Hills is about 24 miles from our storefront, and night or holiday calls take a van out at inconvenient hours.
  • Dealer-only cases: if your car falls there, the dealer sets that cost, not us.

Dealer or locksmith for a Honda key: what is fair?

For many Hondas, a locksmith is the more convenient route. The car does not need to move, and most immobilizer eras program through the OBD-II port without a manufacturer PIN code. For an older Civic, Accord, CR-V or Odyssey, we can usually cut and program the key at your driveway.

The dealer can still be the right call. On the newest model years, especially Hitag AES 4A cars, aftermarket coverage for all keys lost can lag behind add-a-key coverage, and a few vehicles are dealer-only until tools catch up. In that case, going to the dealer is the sensible option. We confirm by VIN before quoting, so you hear it from us up front if it is a dealer job.

If you are comparing, ask both sides the same questions: what exactly is being made, whether the key is programmed to the car, and whether you get tested remotes and a working spare. You can also read our overview of Honda keys and fobs or the wider car keys guide.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that reach 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a call center that sells your job to whoever picks it up. Our own vans handle it, with no dispatch middlemen.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they begin work on your car.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year. A dead fob or a locked-out Honda does not pick a convenient hour.

Honda key service around Hidden Hills (91302)

We serve the whole city, ZIP 91302. Near the Long Valley Road corridor and the main gate area, the first step is simply getting the gate expecting us, so give us your full address on the call. Round Meadow Road, near Round Meadow Elementary School, and the Jed Smith Road area are mostly estate properties with long driveways and their own gates, so we ask for any gate or keypad details so the van is not stalled at a driveway entrance.

Along the west edge near Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space, and at the south edge near The Commons at Calabasas, you may be a bit further from the main gate. Tell us which side of the city you are on and where your Honda is parked. Is it at the house, by the barn, or at a guest structure? That way we go to the right spot the first time.

Heat is part of life here, with hot, dry summers and occasional Santa Ana winds. It is hard on exterior hardware like estate gates, and it is worth remembering for fobs too: leave a smart key on a sun-baked dash and you are asking for a short life from the battery and the shell. If you also have a lockout, see car lockout service in Hidden Hills. For fob-only trouble, see key fob replacement. Our main page for this service is car key replacement in Hidden Hills, and you can always contact us or start from the Wilshire Lock & Key home page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Honda key if I have no original key at all?

In most cases, yes. Hondas program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, even when every key is gone. The exceptions are some early Megamos-13 cars (roughly 1998-2004), which may need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest 4A-platform models, which can be dealer-only. We confirm which applies by VIN before we quote.

Do you need a PIN code from Honda to program my key?

On most Honda models, no manufacturer PIN code is required for locksmith programming. Our equipment handles the immobilizer through the OBD-II port. We still verify your car's model year first, because the details vary by model.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Honda?

It depends on the year. Cars with no immobilizer, such as the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001, will start with a plain copy, which is also why those years are frequent theft targets. On any Honda with a chip, a copy cut without a transponder opens the doors but will not start the engine.

My dash says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new smart key?

Often it is just a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob still opens the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob or the car's antenna may be at fault, and we can test it at your car.

Can you do a key for a 2022 Civic or a 2023 CR-V?

Those years use the newest Hitag AES 4A platform. Add-a-key is generally easier than all keys lost, and current professional tools cover most of these vehicles. The newest model years can still be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before quoting, so you know up front.

Do you come through the Hidden Hills gates?

Yes, we serve all of Hidden Hills, ZIP 91302. Because the city is gated and guarded, and many properties also have their own driveway gates, give us the full address and any gate or keypad details when you call so we can be expected.

Can I get a Honda key made at night or on a weekend?

Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year. Night and holiday calls can affect cost, and we explain that on the phone.

Should I get two keys made instead of one?

Usually yes. Once the programming equipment is connected, adding a spare is simpler than a second visit. On Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory, we also match each key to the right driver slot.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, so ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins. Also ask for the work to be explained before you agree, and be wary of anyone who will not tell you what the job involves.
